With the passing of the #SaveOurStages act in the United States Congress, there is finally a light on the horizon for artists who have been out of work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But that kind of legislation is not a silver bullet; In order to secure change, we need to continually and tactfully remind of leaders how they can best serve people in the arts industry.
One of the organizations leading that charge is Be An Arts Hero. An intersectional grassroots campaign comprised of Arts & Culture workers, Unions, and institutions in the United States, Be An Arts Hero is pushing the Senate to allocate proportionate relief to the Arts & Culture sector of the American economy.
Last week, The Ensemblist’s Francesca Granell talked with two of the Co-Organizers leading Be An Arts Hero, Carson Elrod and Jenny Grace Makholm, about their campaign, what the response from senators has been and what we can do to help.
