About

Stephen Flaherty, a name synonymous with soaring melodies and emotional depth, has painted the Broadway landscape with unforgettable musical moments. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1960, his passion for music bloomed early, blossoming from childhood piano lessons to composing his first score at just 14. By university, he was immersed in the world of musical theater, honing his craft and dreaming of the Great White Way.

His dream began to take shape in 1985 with the off-Broadway production of The Emperor's New Clothes, a collaboration with lyricist Lynn Ahrens that laid the foundation for a legendary partnership. Together, they penned the soaring melodies of Once on This Island, a vibrant explosion of Caribbean rhythms that earned them a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. They then tackled the historical tapestry of Ragtime, a powerful piece that captured America's turn-of-the-century complexities and earned them further Tony nominations.

But their journey didn't end there. Seussical brought whimsical childhood rhymes to life with playful tunes, while Rocky explored the grit and determination of the boxing world through powerful anthems. Their animated masterpiece, Anastasia, tugged at heartstrings with its captivating music and earned them Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.

Beyond Broadway, Flaherty's talents have graced films like After the Storm and Lucky Stiff, showcasing his versatility and depth as a composer. He's also a dedicated mentor, co-founding the DGF Fellows Program for Emerging Writers with Ahrens, ensuring future generations have the space to create their own musical magic.
