He first gained recognition at just 12 years old for his role as Travis Younger in the original Broadway production of A Raisin in the Sun alongside Sidney Poitier. Known for his versatility and commanding presence, Turman has delivered memorable performances in iconic films like Cooley High, Gremlins, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. His television legacy is equally impressive, with standout roles as Mayor Clarence Royce in The Wire, Colonel Bradford Taylor in A Different World, and Nate Lahey Sr. in How to Get Away with Murder, earning him a Primetime Emmy Award for his guest role on In Treatment.

Beyond acting, Turman has directed episodes of popular series such as The Wayans Bros. and The Parent 'Hood, while also being an accomplished horseman and rodeo champion.
