Mercedes Ellington is a renowned dancer, choreographer, and director. The granddaughter of legendary jazz musician Duke Ellington, she was the first African American member of the June Taylor Dancers on The Jackie Gleason Show. Ellington appeared on Broadway in productions such as No, No, Nanette (1971), The Night That Made America Famous (1975), and Sophisticated Ladies (1981), the latter celebrating her grandfather’s music. She served as the choreographer for the 2004 Broadway revival of Sly Fox. Beyond Broadway, she has worked extensively in television, regional theatre, and as a mentor and advocate for preserving the legacy of jazz and dance.
