[0:00] Paul Lazarus: Hi, this is Paul Lazarus. In the 1980s, I produced and hosted a radio series called Anything Goes, a celebration of the American musical theater. Now, the Broadway Podcast Network is bringing back these shows. This is the conclusion of a three-part series featuring noted musical theater historian Robert Kimball discussing Cole Porter's work in the 1930s.

[0:23] Paul Lazarus: This program originally aired in 1983 and featured many Porter shows, including The New Yorkers, You Never Know, and this podcast namesake, Anything Goes. Next show, well, the next one we're covering at least, we're skipping Rosalie, the film, is You Never Know, which happened in 1938, and by all accounts was one of Porter's worst experiences in the theater. I've been working on this show for a while, and it's interesting to see what happened to this, what started out to be an intimate six- to eight-character musical, and the Shuberts produced it and made it into a Winter Garden-type show with 70 performers and choruses, and from one set to hundreds of different settings. Truly ahead of its time in a way, the original idea, and when you think of it as 1938, and a one-set six-character musical, it's really a fairly novel idea, but a great score and very, very unknown, I thought.

[1:32] Paul Lazarus: Very unknown. With the exception of this one song, At Long Last Love. There's so many different things about this show that I've been trying to find out, and I know you discovered some more lyrics for me that I didn't even know existed. For example, in the song What Shall I Do, there's another whole verse that I wasn't even aware of. I think it's this kind of thing that, as a director, I'm very grateful to you for having put together this book, because now someone doing a Porter revival has one place to look, and it's truly terrific.

[2:05] Paul Lazarus: Anyway, I brought in two very different recordings of songs from the show. First, you're going to hear a period pop recording of a song from Alpha to Omega, which is not unlike You're the Top, that kind of a song. I do caution you to notice that the singer decides to change a rhyme at one point. Keep listening for that. And then you'll hear a recording of a wonderful performer named Philip Hoffman sing At Long Last Love with an arrangement by Stephen Orich and a small ensemble. This is the first time I think this has been played. Two songs from You Never Know.
