[0:01] Jennie Kwan: Hey, welcome back everyone. I'm Jennie Kwan.

[0:03] Richard Kline: I'm Richard Kline. And you're listening to Season 2 of Around the Sun. An episodic audio drama created by Brad Forenza. This is Episode 4. Off the Reservation.

[0:21] Richard Kline: MJ moves about his hotel suite with urgency, perhaps throwing fake punches into the air, perhaps fixing his comb-over, when there is a knock on the door.

[0:37] Richard Kline: Come on in.

[0:40] Jennie Kwan: Hey, Mr. D.

[0:42] Richard Kline: There she is.

[0:44] Jennie Kwan: Sorry I'm so late. I stopped at the testing and training range on my way out here.

[0:48] Richard Kline: And what were you doing there?

[0:50] Jennie Kwan: I haven't been since Luke and I graduated. Where is he?

[0:54] Richard Kline: Sabrina, you forget that I was young not too long ago, and I know the only reason a girl goes parking out near the testing and training range is to make out and get high.

[1:04] Richard Kline: And since Luke is still at work, I think you might have had a little date with Mary Jane.

[1:09] Jennie Kwan: Luke is at work? But his text said to meet here, at the hotel.

[1:14] Richard Kline: He must have gotten held up on account of its festival weekend. Anyway, we're here.

[1:20] Jennie Kwan: Thanks for doing this, Mr. D.

[1:22] Richard Kline: Of course. You and Luke could go way back.

[1:25] Jennie Kwan: I haven't seen him since graduation.

[1:27] Richard Kline: Besides, it's festival weekend. I wouldn't miss it.

[1:31] Jennie Kwan: Festival weekend.

[1:33] Richard Kline: And the two of us just waiting to celebrate.

[1:37] Jennie Kwan: Luke has said that you and Mrs. D. used to come to this festival every year when you were young.

[1:41] Richard Kline: You should have known me then.

[1:43] Jennie Kwan: I bet.

[1:44] Richard Kline: I could party hard at these things.

[1:46] Richard Kline: All the girls wanted to come to my tent.

[1:49] Richard Kline: Back then, I couldn't afford a hotel suite.

[1:52] Richard Kline: But the ladies found me anyway.

[1:54] Richard Kline: That's how I met her, you know, Luka's mother.

[1:58] Jennie Kwan: I know.

[1:59] Richard Kline: Yeah. Out of all the girls, she was the only one for me.

[2:03] Richard Kline: The girl in the beaded peasant dress with the dreamcatcher earrings.

[2:08] Jennie Kwan: Did Luka say what time his shift ends?

[2:10] Richard Kline: Hey, what can I get you to drink, Sabrina?

[2:12] Richard Kline: Is that what they still call you, by the way?

[2:15] Jennie Kwan: Sabrina?

[2:17] Jennie Kwan: What else would they call me?

[2:19] Richard Kline: Oh, I don't know. It's such a sophisticated name. Such a groovy chick.

[2:23] Richard Kline: Maybe you call yourself Shirley or Shelley.

[2:26] Richard Kline: You're out parking near the testing and training range.

[2:30] Jennie Kwan: Luka calls me Sab sometimes.

[2:32] Jennie Kwan: But he's the only one.

[2:34] Richard Kline: Well, Sab, how about a drink?

[2:37] Jennie Kwan: I need something strong after that drive out here.

[2:40] Richard Kline: Straight on the interstate until your car appreciates about a grand.

[2:45] Jennie Kwan: Some things you never forget.

[2:48] Jennie Kwan: Oh, man, it's good to be back.

[2:50] Richard Kline: So, what do the kids drink these days?

[2:54] Jennie Kwan: Well, if you're tired, you could have a raging bull.

[2:57] Jennie Kwan: That's vodka mixed with an energy drink.

[3:00] Jennie Kwan: I used to drink them when I'd have finals or papers and stuff.

[3:04] Jennie Kwan: When I want to chill out, but I also want to get stuff done. You know?

[3:08] Richard Kline: Two raging bulls coming right up.

[3:14] Jennie Kwan: Yeah, Luka's text definitely says to meet here at the hotel.

[3:19] Richard Kline: You know Luka, he doesn't know his ass from his elbow sometimes.

[3:23] Jennie Kwan: I hope he's okay.

[3:25] Jennie Kwan: Hey, when was the last time I saw you?

[3:27] Jennie Kwan: Was it last summer at the canyon?

[3:30] Richard Kline: Yeah, I think.

[3:32] Richard Kline: Yeah, I remember now.

[3:34] Richard Kline: You and me wanted to ride the donkeys, but Luka and his mother fell right off.

[3:39] Jennie Kwan: They were allergic.

[3:41] Richard Kline: Fell right off. Killed half the fun.

[3:43] Richard Kline: Then I caught you smoking a doobie that night. You remember that?

[3:46] Jennie Kwan: I do.

[3:48] Richard Kline: Yeah, I wouldn't have cared, except Luka and his mother could be so uptight about that stuff.

[3:53] Richard Kline: MJ hands Sabrina a drink and offers a toast.

[3:57] Richard Kline: To festival weekend.

[4:01] Jennie Kwan: Thanks, Mr. D.

[4:03] Richard Kline: Hey, enough with this Mr. D crap. My father was Mr. D.

[4:06] Richard Kline: From now on, call me MJ.

[4:09] Jennie Kwan: But isn't your real name like Massaman or something?

[4:13] Richard Kline: Massimo Jun.

[4:15] Richard Kline: Yeah, Massimo. Yeah, like the curry.

[4:18] Jennie Kwan: No, no, no. It's not like the curry. It's Massimo.

[4:21] Richard Kline: But I don't go by that anymore. Not since...

[4:24] Richard Kline: Well, not since...

[4:26] Richard Kline: Not since you and Mrs. D decided to spend some time apart.

[4:31] Jennie Kwan: Yeah. Yeah, but Luka told you about that, huh?

[4:36] Richard Kline: Yeah, he called me. I was sorry to hear it.

[4:40] Jennie Kwan: For a while, he was pretty hung up about it.

[4:43] Richard Kline: But then he talked to Mrs. D.

[4:46] Jennie Kwan: What did she say?

[4:48] Richard Kline: Just that she needed some time to figure out who she was again.

[4:52] Jennie Kwan: Yeah, okay, so what'd she say about me?

[4:55] Richard Kline: Not much. Maybe that you joined a garage band or something?

[5:00] Richard Kline: Luka and I thought that was pretty funny.

[5:04] Richard Kline: You know, Luka cries a lot.

[5:08] Richard Kline: Always has.

[5:10] Richard Kline: A colicky baby.

[5:12] Jennie Kwan: His mother said he'd grow out of it, but he never did.

[5:17] Jennie Kwan: He still smoked pot. Sad?

[5:20] Richard Kline: Huh?

[5:21] Jennie Kwan: He still smoked pot?

[5:24] Richard Kline: The square grouper?

[5:26] Jennie Kwan: Maybe.

[5:27] Richard Kline: Yeah, you kids have it easy. In my days, we had to sneak around for it.

[5:31] Richard Kline: Ever tell you why they call it the square grouper?

[5:34] Jennie Kwan: You know, we have more names for it now.

[5:38] Jennie Kwan: Marijuana. We call it perp if it's purple, kush if it's from the Middle East, and crunk when alcohol is involved.

[5:45] Richard Kline: Well, in that case, check out this crunk.

[5:50] Richard Kline: It reveals a bag of marijuana for Sabrina to see.

[5:53] Jennie Kwan: Wow! For me?

[5:55] Richard Kline: I don't know, Steph. I don't think you can handle all this crunk by yourself.

[6:00] Jennie Kwan: Is it pure?

[6:02] Richard Kline: The purest. Got it from an Indian reservation I passed through on the way out here.

[6:06] Richard Kline: And I don't mean a Masaman Indian.

[6:09] Jennie Kwan: What do you want for it?

[6:11] Richard Kline: Who says it's for sale?

[6:13] Richard Kline: What if it's only for sharing with someone you love?

[6:16] Jennie Kwan: You mean you want to wait until Luka gets here?

[6:19] Richard Kline: Luka's in the bedroom.

[6:21] Jennie Kwan: He is?

[6:22] Richard Kline: He had a migraine when I picked him up from work, and he slept the whole infinite car ride out here.

[6:27] Jennie Kwan: I haven't spoken to anyone else since breakfast.

[6:29] Jennie Kwan: I might as well be home.

[6:31] Richard Kline: Is he okay?

[6:32] Jennie Kwan: Yeah, he's fine. Dead to the world, just like his mother.

[6:37] Richard Kline: But I figure you and me could have a little fun without him, you know, before the festival starts.

[6:42] Jennie Kwan: But we can't smoke in here. Not if Luka has a headache.

[6:45] Richard Kline: So we'll head out near the testing and training range then, like old times.

[6:50] Jennie Kwan: We can't do that.

[6:52] Richard Kline: Why not?

[6:53] Jennie Kwan: Because they sold the land.

[6:56] Richard Kline: So?

[6:57] Jennie Kwan: So, um, maybe I should just take a walk until Luka wakes up.

[7:03] Richard Kline: Why would you want to do that?

[7:05] Jennie Kwan: To give you some space.

[7:07] Richard Kline: Space? That's what you all say. You need space. Next minute you're off following some Maharishi around the desert, right?

[7:14] Jennie Kwan: I don't want to smoke with you, Mr. D.

[7:16] Richard Kline: What, so I'm hip enough to buy you festival passes and rent hotel suite, but not hip enough to smoke with?

[7:21] Jennie Kwan: I don't think that would be fair to Luka.

[7:24] Richard Kline: You really think you're going to get everything handed to you like this? This is getting weird.

[7:27] Jennie Kwan: You want this bag of weed from off the reservation? Of course you do.

[7:33] Richard Kline: I could buy you 50 bags of it, but don't think it's not going to cost you. Don't think just because you're young and you're pretty, a grown man is just going to shower you with an unlimited supply of weed.

[7:42] Richard Kline: Or crunk, or whatever the hell you call it these days.

[7:45] Jennie Kwan: Mr. D.

[7:46] Richard Kline: Look, if you want this bag, let's get out of here and I'll show you how high a real man can take you.

[7:52] Jennie Kwan: Mr. D. I...

[7:53] Richard Kline: I what? You what? What?

[7:56] Jennie Kwan: I'm sorry about your wife. I know you miss her very much.

[8:01] Richard Kline: What's there to be sorry for? There's nothing to miss. She's a pain in the ass.

[8:06] Richard Kline: It's just a little time apart to figure out who we are again, that's all.

[8:10] Jennie Kwan: I know.

[8:12] Richard Kline: It used to be so much simpler. We used to just come out to this festival every year.

[8:18] Jennie Kwan: I know.

[8:20] Richard Kline: All the girls wanted to come to my tent. And out of all the girls, she was the only one for me.

[8:29] Jennie Kwan: I know.

[8:31] Richard Kline: So, maybe she'll be there tonight. Do you ever think of that? Maybe she'll be at the festival.

[8:39] Jennie Kwan: Maybe.

[8:40] Richard Kline: Yeah. Look for the girl in the beaded peasant dress with the dreamcatcher earrings.
