[0:01] Richard Kind: Hello again, I'm Richard Kind.

[0:03] Adassa: I'm Adassa.

[0:06] Richard Kind: And you're listening to Around the Sun, an episodic audio drama created by Brad Forenza.

[0:12] Richard Kind: This is Season 2, Episode 9. Borrowed Land.

[0:18] Richard Kind: Around the Sun.

[0:26] Richard Kind: The sky is ablaze with shooting stars and gaseous explosions as Mr. Young, suitcase in tow, clothing a mess, marches furiously across the bombed-out desert.

[0:37] Mr. Young: Of all the ridiculous lives I've got, of all the crazy pills I've swallowed, this one takes the cake.

[0:43] Richard Kind: Mr. Young catches sight of the realtor, sitting in a lawn chair amidst the vast chaos.

[0:51] Richard Kind: She is deep in a good read, oblivious to the world around her.

[0:55] Mr. Young: You!

[0:56] Realtor: Shh.

[0:58] Mr. Young: I've been looking for you for almost a year.

[1:00] Realtor: Please be quiet. You're stealing my peace.

[1:04] Mr. Young: Think outside the box, you said. Imagine the possibility, you said.

[1:08] Mr. Young: You said I was Goldilocks. You said there was no such thing as just right.

[1:13] Mr. Young: Well, if you think this desert is anywhere near just right, you've got another thing coming.

[1:18] Realtor: And you are?

[1:20] Mr. Young: Sellers market, you said. Sellers market, my ass!

[1:24] Realtor: Did I sell you a house at some point?

[1:27] Mr. Young: No! You sold me an ideal. You sold me a pipe dream.

[1:32] Mr. Young: Nothing tangible. Nothing concrete. Untapped potential, you said.

[1:36] Mr. Young: And then something about borrowed land.

[1:39] Realtor: It's all borrowed land, sir. We're just passing through.

[1:44] Mr. Young: Well, good. Because I don't want to be here. I'm returning the land, and I want a refund.

[1:49] Realtor: I can't do that, sir.

[1:51] Mr. Young: I want my money back. With interest.

[1:54] Realtor: That's not how it works. Everyone knows that.

[1:58] Realtor: Now, if you'll excuse me, I was finding my peace.

[2:03] Mr. Young: You didn't disclose everything you stood up. That's got to be illegal.

[2:07] Realtor: Where is your property again?

[2:10] Mr. Young: You don't remember?

[2:12] Realtor: I've made a career pivot. I have people selling for me now.

[2:16] Realtor: It's a great big chunk of desert. Out near the state line and the testing and the training range.

[2:22] Realtor: Mr. Young? Is that you?

[2:26] Mr. Young: Feed the flesh that hasn't already melted off of me.

[2:30] Realtor: Mr. Young, of course I remember you. How could I forget you?

[2:36] Realtor: It's so good to see you. Thank you. Thank you so much.

[2:40] Mr. Young: Thank me? For what?

[2:42] Realtor: It's because of you I'm out here right now, finding my peace, instead of driving indecisive buyers all over the desert.

[2:50] Mr. Young: You didn't tell me that land was unsafe. Federally stuffed was all you said.

[2:55] Realtor: Well, only an adult would think it was completely safe.

[2:59] Realtor: Federally stuffed.

[3:00] Realtor: Not a big city boy like you.

[3:02] Mr. Young: I want a return on investment, or I'll see you in court.

[3:06] Realtor: Hey, don't get crazy with me, Mr. Young. The buyer always assumes some risk.

[3:13] Mr. Young: I didn't move west to retire in fear.

[3:16] Realtor: Fear is a mindset. And I'm semi-retired now, too.

[3:22] Mr. Young: How?

[3:23] Realtor: I got promoted the day after your closing, when I finally unloaded your patch of opportunity.

[3:30] Mr. Young: What?

[3:31] Realtor: Now I have sellers working for me. I moved up the chain, and I owe it all to you.

[3:38] Mr. Young: Why? Why do you get to move up the chain? Because you screwed me on a deal?

[3:43] Realtor: If anyone got screwed, it's only the buyers who never saw that pocket listing.

[3:48] Mr. Young: Lady, save it.

[3:50] Realtor: And thanks to you, I finally have some peace of my own.

[3:54] Realtor: I can sit out here under the stars and read all the books I never got to read in school.

[4:00] Mr. Young: But that's my thing. That's what I wanted to do.

[4:04] Realtor: It was scary at first, but I'm finding the balance, as you can see.

[4:09] Realtor: I wanted to read books, find my peace, not chase away coyotes.

[4:15] Realtor: And now I can make sure my son graduates and gets ahead in life, so he can be at the top of the pyramid.

[4:23] Mr. Young: Ah! The world is crashing down, and you're enabling your kid!

[4:28] Realtor: You say enabling, but I say empowering. It's a balance.

[4:33] Realtor: At least in the city, I knew I was swimming with sharks. I knew they were out for themselves.

[4:39] Realtor: The path to enlightenment is about finding the right blend.

[4:43] Realtor: I know I was safer with them than with you.

[4:46] Mr. Young: Then go back.

[4:49] Realtor: I can't.

[4:50] Mr. Young: It's a free country. No one is stopping you.

[4:55] Realtor: You put me in an impossible position out here.

[4:58] Mr. Young: I didn't do anything.

[5:00] Realtor: You screwed me.

[5:02] Mr. Young: It's nothing personal. Just business.

[5:05] Realtor: You screwed me, and I'll never look at people the same again.

[5:09] Mr. Young: I can't stay out here.

[5:11] Mr. Young: I'm in danger all the time. You don't seem to care.

[5:14] Mr. Young: I mean, I can handle a few stoner kids stumbling onto the property every now and then, but extraterrestrials landing on my motorhome?

[5:22] Mr. Young: I'm not covered for that.

[5:24] Realtor: I suggest you stop fighting it all and learn to live with your choices.

[5:29] Mr. Young: I should be sitting out here.

[5:32] Mr. Young: Not you.

[5:34] Mr. Young: Where's my lawn chair?

[5:36] Mr. Young: Where's my peace?

[5:38] Realtor: You have to find it, Mr. Young.

[5:41] Realtor: We all have our own journey.

[5:44] Mr. Young: Wait a minute.

[5:46] Mr. Young: Wait a minute. Where'd you hear that?

[5:49] Realtor: Hmm.

[5:50] Realtor: Oprah, maybe?

[5:52] Realtor: Or maybe this book I'm reading for my son's philosophy class.

[5:56] Mr. Young: Siddhartha?

[5:58] Realtor: Bless you.

[5:59] Realtor: No, Siddhartha.

[6:01] Mr. Young: What book are you reading for your son's class?

[6:04] Realtor: Hmm. I forget what it's called.

[6:07] Realtor: They blur together when you read as much as I do.

[6:10] Realtor: Either way, every human experience carries potential for the opposite experience.

[6:17] Realtor: Chaos and peace, wealth and poverty, sadness and joy, enabling and empowering even.

[6:25] Realtor: The deeper the experience, the stronger the imbalance.

[6:29] Realtor: So, it's up to you to find your own balance, Mr. Young.

[6:35] Realtor: No one can find it for you.

[6:37] Realtor: So, you can't pass your fears off on me.

[6:40] Mr. Young: Can I see that book?

[6:42] Realtor: Sure.

[6:44] Richard Kind: The realtor passes her son's book.

[6:47] Richard Kind: It is indeed Siddhartha.

[6:49] Mr. Young: Mr. Young opens the book and reads aloud.

[6:52] Mr. Young: When someone is seeking, it happens quite easily that he only sees the thing that he is seeking.

[7:00] Mr. Young: That he is unable to find anything because he is obsessed with his goal.

[7:07] Mr. Young: And seeking means to have a goal.

[7:12] Mr. Young: But finding means to be free, to be receptive, to have no goal.

[7:21] Realtor: You, Mr. Young, are perhaps, indeed, a seeker.

[7:28] Mr. Young: For in striving towards my goal, I do not see many things that are right under my nose.

[7:38] Realtor: Come on. Have a seat, Mr. Young. Stay a while.

[7:44] Richard Kind: Mr. Young sits in a lawn chair beside the realtor.

[7:48] Richard Kind: Together, they look out at Armageddon.

[7:53] Mr. Young: Now what?

[7:55] Realtor: Just roll with it.

[7:58] Mr. Young: But what about all the chaos?

[8:02] Mr. Young: Shouldn't we do something?

[8:04] Realtor: Find the balance, Mr. Young.

[8:08] Realtor: The Cogs will deal with everything else.

[8:12] Realtor: Eventually.

[8:16] Mr. Young: Well.

[8:19] Mr. Young: Ain't that some shit.
