Susan was the original Kim MacAfee in Bye Bye Birdie, Nanette in the 1971 revival of No No Nanette, and was in Ben Franklin in Paris, A Joyful Noise, and many others. We interviewed her over the phone from her home in Los Angeles. John Simon was one of the most controversial theater critics of the 20thCentury. His reviews were vicious, harsh, hysterical, and quite often took the performer’s physical attributes to task. His reviews got him kicked out of the New York Drama Critics Circle. Sylvia Miles dumped food on his head. And, if he gave you a negative review, you can quote it from memory.
