About

We're back at you with one of the strangest things we've covered so far (and that's saying something), from the mind of Kung Pow's Steve Oedekerk we have High Strung, a Bill Hicks style rant film where Jim Carrey plays the Grim Reaper. You think that sounds entertaining? Well you're wrong, its not.

[0:15] Jesse McAnally: Hello, I'm Jesse McAnally.

[0:17] Alan Seales: That was the worst energetic intro ever.

[0:21] Jesse McAnally: We're talking about High Strung.

[0:22] Alan Seales: What do you want me to bring to this?

[0:26] Jesse McAnally: No.

[0:26] Alan Seales: I haven't.

[0:27] Jesse McAnally: Does the document say be energetic?

[0:29] Alan Seales: Because otherwise it wouldn't have helped.

[0:31] Jesse McAnally: Okay.

[0:32] Alan Seales: This is Mike to face.

[0:34] Jesse McAnally: So hold up.

[0:35] Alan Seales: Okay, okay, let's do it.

[0:36] Jesse McAnally: Okay, take two.

[0:38] Jesse McAnally: Hello, I'm Jesse McAnally.

[0:41] Alan Seales: I'm Alan Seales.

[0:51] Liz Eston: And I'm Liz Eston.

[0:53] Jesse McAnally: Take four!

[0:54] Alan Seales: Take four!

[0:56] Jesse McAnally: Hello, I'm Jesse McAnally.

[0:58] Alan Seales: I'm still Alan Seales.

[0:59] Liz Eston: And I'm Liz Eston still.

[1:00] Jesse McAnally: And welcome to Carrey'd Away, a podcast where we explore the films and television shows starring and involving the one and only James Eugene Carrey.

[1:09] Alan Seales: Holy shit.

[1:10] Jesse McAnally: I like how this time you said involving being.

[1:13] Alan Seales: Involving James Carrey.

[1:17] Jesse McAnally: I don't know.

[1:18] Alan Seales: He has he is kind of what the film's building up to.

[1:21] Jesse McAnally: He is the climax of this movie.

[1:23] Alan Seales: It's not like Pink Cadillac where he's in the background.

[1:26] Jesse McAnally: He is the main event that we're all just sitting around waiting for.

[1:29] Alan Seales: And we don't say his butt in this one either.

[1:31] Jesse McAnally: So that's a plus.

[1:32] Alan Seales: Would you rather watch any of those early ones or watch this again?

[1:37] Jesse McAnally: I'd rather watch it.

[1:38] Alan Seales: Wait, what are we talking about, Jesse?

[1:40] Jesse McAnally: We haven't seen that far again.

[1:43] Alan Seales: You were gonna claim that this isn't porn.

[1:46] Jesse McAnally: I would say this is a man masturbating on screen for 90 minutes, so it might as well be porn.

[1:51] Jesse McAnally: This is High Strung, starring Steve Oedekirk.

[1:58] Alan Seales: Marf.

[2:02] Jesse McAnally: Did that scare you?

[2:04] Alan Seales: I told you!

[2:06] Jesse McAnally: If also, just to clarify, this is 1991 or 1992's High Strung, not 2016's High Strung, which is a different movie that comes up whenever I Google it.

[2:23] Alan Seales: So Steve Oedekirk's gonna sue you.

[2:26] Jesse McAnally: Yes.

[2:26] Alan Seales: This is not 2016's High Strung.

[2:28] Jesse McAnally: And he's got Jimmy Neutron back at the barnyard money, so don't fuck with him.

[2:32] Alan Seales: Steve Oedekirk.

[2:33] Jesse McAnally: It sounds like they did a crossover episode the way you said that, which is like the weirdest shit I could imagine.

[2:37] Alan Seales: Steve Oedekirk also the mastermind behind Kung Pao: Enter the Fist and Thumb Wars.

[2:43] Jesse McAnally: Yes.

[2:43] Alan Seales: In fact, he is bringing Thumb Wars back sometime this year.

[2:47] Jesse McAnally: And Kung Pao 2.

[2:48] Alan Seales: I don't believe that'll ever happen.

[2:49] Jesse McAnally: You don't think so?

[2:50] Alan Seales: No.

[2:51] Jesse McAnally: But I thought he could do no wrong after knowing him.

[2:54] Alan Seales: What?

[2:55] Jesse McAnally: After knowing him from Kung Pao and Thumb Wars.

[2:57] Alan Seales: I'm like, oh this dude, this dude's totes, totes McGoats.

[3:00] Jesse McAnally: Have you seen like his screenwriting credits?

[3:02] Alan Seales: He wrote Patch Adams.

[3:03] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, he's written terrible fucking movies.

[3:05] Alan Seales: Wait, you thought Patch Adams was terrible?

[3:08] Jesse McAnally: You didn't?

[3:08] Alan Seales: You didn't find it awful?

[3:10] Jesse McAnally: No.

[3:11] Alan Seales: It is one of the most horrendously offensive films ever made, Alan.

[3:14] Jesse McAnally: Oh, okay.

[3:15] Alan Seales: Well, then maybe I haven't watched it in twenty.

[3:17] Jesse McAnally: Maybe we'll have to do a Robin Williams podcast.

[3:20] Alan Seales: He also wrote Nutty Professor 2: The Clumps.

[3:23] Jesse McAnally: He also wrote Nutty Professor One, The Nutty Professor.

[3:26] Alan Seales: I also was an executive producer on Juwanna Mann.

[3:29] Jesse McAnally: Okay, also wrote Bruce Almighty and Ace Ventura 2.

[3:33] Alan Seales: Yeah.

[3:33] Jesse McAnally: Not Ace Ventura 1.

[3:35] Alan Seales: No, Jim Carrey is one of the main writers on that.

[3:37] Jesse McAnally: I'm pretty sure Jim Carrey brought him in because Steve Oedekirk was just a friend of Jim Carrey's, and I'm pretty sure Jim Carrey got him to be a writer on In Living Color shortly after doing this.

[3:47] Alan Seales: And one of the rules for Jim Carrey being in this film, even before he was famous, is you could not market the fact that Jim Carrey was in this.

[3:56] Jesse McAnally: It was in his contract. You couldn't put my name in the credits, you couldn't put my face on the poster. Um, I am doing this as a favor, uncredited, and you will not use me to market it.

[4:05] Alan Seales: But High Strung is a film released January 8th, 1992 at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and releasing at a random USA Film Festival on April 26, 1992, directed by Roger Nygard in his directorial debut, and he also would go on to make garbage.

[4:21] Jesse McAnally: Um starring Steve Oedekirk, Tom F. Wilson from Back to the Future, Denise Crosby, Fred Willard, underused Fred Willard, Jay Jenny Lane, and of course Jim Carrey, uncredited, don't you dare put me on the poster, you son of a bitch.

[4:35] Alan Seales: Um written by Steve Oedekirk and Robert Kuhn, the plot of which is an uptight stay-at-home children's novelist has delusions of indicating that something will happen to him at 8 o'clock.

[4:46] Jesse McAnally: Um obviously they did not hold true to that agreement once they sold the distribution rights, because every VHS you will ever get of this will have Jim Carrey's face all over it.

[4:57] Alan Seales: Okay, okay, okay, okay.

[4:58] Jesse McAnally: So Steve, is this a passion project of Steve's?

[5:01] Alan Seales: I believe so.

[5:02] Jesse McAnally: Considering it's just 90 minutes of him monologuing with Biff Tannen every now and then popping in.

[5:07] Alan Seales: I love Tom F. Wilson.

[5:09] Jesse McAnally: Honestly, here's the thing. Um, for one of my films that you both know, um, for my feature film, the main antagonist of that I wrote for Tom F. Wilson, and uh that would have been so cool, but I think he's a fantastic, underrated actor, and the only reason Back to the Future as a trilogy works is because of him.

[5:31] Alan Seales: That is the argument.

[5:32] Jesse McAnally: That is an interesting argument.

[5:33] Alan Seales: I didn't realize he was Back to the Future.

[5:36] Jesse McAnally: The first film would work fine with that.

[5:40] Alan Seales: I see Back to the Future.

[5:42] Jesse McAnally: Did not recognize him on this low-res copy.

[5:44] Alan Seales: Sorry.

[5:45] Alan Seales: He does not quite look the way he's a man.

[5:47] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, he does not look like Biff Tannen.

[5:49] Alan Seales: I do not know the actor who plays Biff Tannen's name.

[5:51] Jesse McAnally: Well, fine then.

[5:53] Alan Seales: I I I I like Biff.

[5:55] Jesse McAnally: I like Biff because yeah, you love to hate Biff.

[5:58] Alan Seales: I don't know.

[5:58] Jesse McAnally: Well that too, but think of all the things he has to play through that series.

[6:02] Alan Seales: That first one, he has to play the evil old Biff, then you see the young version of him, then you see the wimpy version of him, then you in the sequel you have to see old old man version of him, Donald Trump version of him, young version of him, and then you have to see old Wild West version of him.

[6:17] Jesse McAnally: He is playing very distinct versions of these in a way that Matthew McConaughey as Marty McFly.

[6:30] Alan Seales: Um almost as good.

[6:32] Jesse McAnally: Alright, alright.

[6:34] Alan Seales: Hey dog.

[6:35] Jesse McAnally: Wanna get high and smoke some bong girls in that time machine?

[6:39] Alan Seales: Well, you're telling me you built a time machine out of a DeLorean.

[6:43] Jesse McAnally: Wait, is that that's a that's a DeLorean?

[6:45] Alan Seales: Alright, alright.

[6:46] Jesse McAnally: I will I will fly through the time for you, Doc Brown.

[6:49] Alan Seales: You're saying my mom has the hots for me?

[6:51] Jesse McAnally: Alright, alright, alright.

[6:52] Alan Seales: You guys can't see my face when I'm actively groaning.

[6:55] Jesse McAnally: That's the thing about high school girls.

[6:57] Alan Seales: I keep getting older, but then I get in a time machine and fuck my mom.

[7:03] Jesse McAnally: You know, my mom's got the hots for me, and I'm full, I'm all for it.

[7:06] Alan Seales: High strung.

[7:09] Jesse McAnally: Again.

[7:11] Alan Seales: Every time.

[7:13] Jesse McAnally: It's really amazing, you know?

[7:16] Alan Seales: No matter how little milk you put on your cereal, there's always too much left at the end.

[7:22] Jesse McAnally: I mean, you would think it would be possible to judge it right, you know?

[7:26] Alan Seales: Maybe put in just the right amount of milk so it all comes out even.

[7:30] Jesse McAnally: But no, there's always too much.

[7:33] Alan Seales: It's just shit.

[7:37] Jesse McAnally: So what?

[7:38] Alan Seales: You end up having to pour in more cereal that you probably don't even want.

[7:42] Jesse McAnally: Or having to pick up the poles and slurp it.

[7:44] Alan Seales: Like you're some kind of a dog.

[7:47] Jesse McAnally: There's no reprieve.

[7:49] Alan Seales: It's every time.

[7:50] Jesse McAnally: It just digs and digs and digs until you just can't take it anymore.

[7:56] Alan Seales: I wish I were dead.

[8:00] Jesse McAnally: Anything to not talk about that movie.

[8:02] Alan Seales: Um so it is I I want to say a Bill Hicks Sam Kinison-like monologue film that felt like a one-man show that they last minute turned into a movie with limited budget.

[8:16] Jesse McAnally: Wait, when was it made?

[8:17] Alan Seales: And you said you said before we started recording they spent 400,000.

[8:21] Jesse McAnally: That was the budget.

[8:21] Alan Seales: Yes, that was the budget.

[8:22] Jesse McAnally: So when was it?

[8:23] Alan Seales: And it was uh 1991.

[8:26] Jesse McAnally: 1991.

[8:27] Alan Seales: So 400,000 in 1991 is 905, 906,000 today.

[8:32] Jesse McAnally: Almost a million.

[8:33] Alan Seales: Push in a million dollars.

[8:36] Jesse McAnally: But it was funded by former orchestra conductor Vladimir Horanzui and rock guitarist Sergei Zolobetsky.

[8:44] Alan Seales: Both of whom had fled the United States from Russia in 1979 after they refused to join the Communist Party.

[8:52] Jesse McAnally: Um they put their entire life savings to produce this film, and what a waste.

[8:58] Alan Seales: Sorry.

[8:59] Jesse McAnally: I want to know their story, you know.

[9:02] Alan Seales: Well, I I I think they lost their life savings.

[9:05] Jesse McAnally: It's a pretty short story.

[9:07] Alan Seales: I'm sorry.

[9:08] Jesse McAnally: I mean, maybe it got like a second life of people boldly curious about Jim Carrey in this film the same way we are.

[9:17] Alan Seales: Like maybe may I'm trying to be positive here.

[9:19] Jesse McAnally: I can't.

[9:20] Alan Seales: I can't with this.

[9:21] Jesse McAnally: Okay, so so constructively, what do you think was horribly wrong with this?

[9:27] Alan Seales: Actually, shorter question.

[9:29] Jesse McAnally: Did anything work about this?

[9:33] Alan Seales: Biff Tannen was in it.

[9:34] Jesse McAnally: That was yeah, Tom F.

[9:36] Alan Seales: Denise Crosby's in it.

[9:37] Jesse McAnally: I liked uh Fred Willard's little cameo as uh traveling salesman.

[9:42] Alan Seales: Um may may maybe he'll he whack off in peace now.

[9:42] Jesse McAnally: Whack off.

[9:47] Alan Seales: Bobby, stop whacking off by the shit.

[9:49] Jesse McAnally: I mean, we all know the that cute story of him going to a porn store and then whacking off looking at the covers, right?

[9:55] Alan Seales: No.

[9:55] Jesse McAnally: No, explain this to me.

[9:57] Alan Seales: Fred Willard went to was arrested for going into a porn shop and then masturbating in the corner of the video section just looking at the top covers.

[10:05] Jesse McAnally: Classic Fred Willard.

[10:07] Alan Seales: And it and it wasn't like in the 1980s.

[10:09] Jesse McAnally: It was like in 2010 or 12.

[10:12] Alan Seales: The internet exists, bro.

[10:14] Jesse McAnally: You can do that at home if you want.

[10:16] Alan Seales: Yeah, he he was s no, it was at a it was at a Hollywood it was at a theater.

[10:20] Jesse McAnally: Um it was an adult theater.

[10:22] Alan Seales: He was seventy-two years old.

[10:23] Jesse McAnally: He was in 2012.

[10:25] Alan Seales: Like it was way enough where you shouldn't know about the internet, you know?

[10:29] Jesse McAnally: Hmm.

[10:30] Alan Seales: 72, your whole career, you've had assistance.

[10:32] Jesse McAnally: Oh, he lost a job because of this incident.

[10:35] Alan Seales: What?

[10:35] Jesse McAnally: He got dropped as he dropped he got dropped by PBS uh from the show Market Warriors, which I don't know what that is, but he got dropped for him.

[10:43] Alan Seales: I'm sure I'm sure the Wally check made up for that.

[10:45] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, 100%.

[10:46] Alan Seales: Actor Fred Willard was caught at the Tiki Theater in Hollywood, which by the way is a theater for adult films, and he got caught there with his pants down and his penis in his hand.

[10:57] Jesse McAnally: That's what God made computers for.

[10:59] Alan Seales: Um watch it at home, right?

[11:01] Jesse McAnally: I think that some of the cinematography in this is pretty neat, and a little more effort was put into it than needed to be for what this was.

[11:10] Alan Seales: I like like when they like do the long shots of him from above, and like I'm like, okay, the DP and the director were trying to make something out of this, and didn't work because Steve Oedekirk is such an unwelcoming lead presence that he's so unpleasant to look at, so unsympathetic as a lead character, and he doesn't have like that deep kind of it feels like rants that you would hear George Carlin or Bill Hicks give during the time.

[11:42] Jesse McAnally: Except without any of the charm or wit of either of them.

[11:45] Alan Seales: The world is like a ride at an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it, you think it's real, because that's how powerful our minds are.

[11:51] Jesse McAnally: And the ride goes up and down and round and round.

[11:54] Alan Seales: It has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly colored, and it's very loud, and it's fun for a while.

[12:00] Jesse McAnally: Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question is this real or is this just a ride?

[12:05] Alan Seales: And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and they say, Hey, don't worry, don't be afraid ever, because this is just a ride, and we kill those people.

[12:16] Jesse McAnally: Because I think in the 90s, we I I wasn't there very long. Um, but we kind of thought like this is the end of history, we did it, everyone, and we could be cynical about dumb things like other people smoke cigarettes, and oh my god, telemarketers, my life is hell, and all these petty bullshit things that make everything is so much worse now, so I don't really want to hear someone complain about the petty bullshit. You know what I mean? This movie's my worst nightmare. A man constantly complaining at me for over an hour about how he hates his life. When he's living in he has the easiest job in the fucking world. Yeah, he's just staring at the camera, just like I this is what I did not want for myself in my life.

I did not want a man complaining at me for an hour and a half about how he hates going out to dinner. How dare you have friends that want to spend time with you? Okay, I'm gonna leave. You know what really gets me mad? I bought these natural watermelon popsicles. On the box, it said 100% natural, 100% watermelon. So I thought, hey, I love watermelon. I love popsicles. This should be the perfect thing for me. So I take a bite, and I notice there's something in my mouth. Something small and hard. So I spit it out. It was a seed. A seed. They actually put watermelon seeds in the popsicles.

[13:55] Alan Seales: Also, I have more info about the Fred Willard arrest if you're interested.

[13:59] Jesse McAnally: Yes.

[14:00] Alan Seales: Alright. Okay, I found a detailed article for the Hollywood Reporter. So he was at a he's at the Tiki Theater in Los Angeles watching a pair board parody of Life Times Jit the Lifetime series, The Client List, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt. So it's a porn parody of the lifetime show about Jennifer Love Hewitt being like a escort. Uh and he denied Fred Wheeler denied this happened. He said it did not happen. It's a difference of opinion. That's so much funnier than what P Pee Wee Herman said, which is they just lied. He also said he had he also he has a great respect for the police before saying it's a different opinion. Like I have a great respect for them, but they're incorrect that I was jacking off at a porn theater.

So it wasn't jigging up. It's Mr. Beauty. Also the lawyer said unironically, we will be working vigorously to clear his name. Not as vigorously as he was working himself in that theater. Oh also we got replaced by Mark Wahlberg from that hosting gig on PBS. Oh, famously unproblematic Mark Wahlberg, who's done nothing wrong in his entire career. Definitely definitely not a section of his Wikipedia titled Hate Crimes. No, no, Mark Mark Wahlberg's not a not a cool dude. He sucks. He's done some things. He's from Boston. What are you talking about? He's great. He he's wonderful. No issues.

[15:19] Jesse McAnally: Alright. So back to High Strung. Do we have to? Fine. This is like this is kind of setting up a good majority of Jim Carrey's later career. Because Steve Odekirk will reappear. He will reoccur several times, in fact. Not only this, because we have discussed that we will be covering the Jim Carrey sequels that don't have Jim Carrey in it after we do all the Jim Carrey stuff in it. He wrote both Evan Almighty and Bruce Almighty. Um, as well as Ace Ventura 2. Um, and I I think there was rumors he was writing the new Ace Venturo with uh for the Jeff Fowler, which was um going to happen. I don't know if it's gonna happen now, um, since Jim Carrey claims to be retiring every other second.

[16:01] Alan Seales: Well, Sonic 3 is happening with him in it now, right?

[16:05] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, but I'm gonna I'm gonna put a bet. So Sonic 3 comes out later this year. That'll probably be the series finale of our show if the math is mathing outright. This year, this year being 2024, because our our podcast recording timeline is not been linear.

[16:20] Alan Seales: No, no, I literally had to put a note in because uh we recorded with Israel Collins. She was in shocked and it would reclose for like two months when I first say that I heard that I heard that.

[16:29] Jesse McAnally: Um so God, I forgot where I was going. Um yeah, so Sonic 3. I'm betting Jim Carrey's a voiceover only kind of role in that movie.

[16:39] Alan Seales: You think?

[16:39] Jesse McAnally: I think he will have no live action because they shot most of the film without actors on screen, and they shot for like two weeks with actors, and James Marst was the only one, and then they just announced that Jim Carrey is back, and the film comes out in December. I'm like, I bet they're gonna make him into like the CGI monstrosity fat uh robotnik character and he's just doing a voice.

[17:01] Alan Seales: I think I mean it's being reported he's being reported as part of the live action cast, so I don't know.

[17:07] Jesse McAnally: Well, that's my pitch. Like they put the motion capture dots on him and he's gonna he's gonna look entirely different. That is my pitch. Yeah. Uh we'll come back later this year, and I could be entirely wrong.

[17:18] Alan Seales: Yeah. Alright. Well, we'll we'll put a bet on that. I bet you uh podcast episode.

[17:24] Jesse McAnally: Bet a podcast episode?

[17:26] Alan Seales: What?

[17:26] Jesse McAnally: Yeah.

[17:26] Alan Seales: How would you fully how would you bet a podcast episode?

[17:30] Jesse McAnally: So if he's in it as an animated character, you m write a podcast episode.

[17:39] Alan Seales: Write one?

[17:40] Jesse McAnally: Yes.

[17:41] Alan Seales: What?

[17:41] Jesse McAnally: Isn't that like unorganized?

[17:43] Alan Seales: For what show?

[17:44] Jesse McAnally: We'll figure that out later.

[17:46] Alan Seales: Okay, if I'm writing one for uh, what is it? Bleeding love or something, and I just do like a weird epilogue episode where suddenly these vampires just want to talk about like, you know, Taylor Swift.

[17:57] Jesse McAnally: Sure, I'll do that. Dude, you need to make uh a podcast, a mini-series, radio comedy about two vampires who fell in love with Taylor Swift. And both of them wanna make her live forever.

[18:10] Alan Seales: There you go.

[18:11] Jesse McAnally: We must we must have endless arrows. Imagine the era in 2053.

[18:17] Alan Seales: Uh uh.

[18:19] Jesse McAnally: Is every vampire the count?

[18:20] Alan Seales: They're all the count from Sesame Street, and they're all yeah.

[18:24] Jesse McAnally: We are immortal. Let's count the ways. Also, transition. It's implied Steve Oda Kirk is immortal at the end of this fucking movie.

[18:34] Alan Seales: I'm sorry.

[18:36] Jesse McAnally: This time I'm gonna have to put my foot down. I'm not taking him. There's no way I can be around that guy. And I'm not coming back for him either.

[18:51] Alan Seales: Yeah, I didn't we I guess we should talk about the Jim Carrey, but all this letterbox is the interesting part.

[18:59] Jesse McAnally: No, no, we have to talk about Jim Carrey. We have to have a decently long episode, Alan. We can't just skip to letterboxed.

[19:05] Alan Seales: Letterbox, letterbox. So Jim Carrey plays the Grim Reaper, and periodically throughout this this horrific film, he will call Steve Otakirk. I think his name is Thane in the movie.

[19:12] Jesse McAnally: His name is Thane, which is disgusting. Thane. It sounds like you're singing fame, but you've got a wrong lisp. So it's like, Fame, I'm gonna live forever. Thane. Um, so Jim Carrey calls, like, hey, I'm gonna see you at 8 p.m. I'm gonna do some wacky faces. I'm gonna dress in drag. I'm Jim Carrey, but I'm a little young. I'm a little young man. And then he shows up with a limo, and he's like, I'm death. Hey, isn't it great to be dead? I could take my ear off and put it on my forehead. Isn't that neat? And then Steve Odekirk bitches, and Jim Carrey's like, I can't handle this. Which it makes to feel like the film's self-aware of how obnoxious and horrific this character is, but we've also been stuck with him for almost two hours now.

[20:03] Alan Seales: So who are you?

[20:06] Jesse McAnally: I'm death, man.

[20:11] Alan Seales: Death.

[20:13] Jesse McAnally: Like the death?

[20:17] Alan Seales: Well, I'd say in the flesh, but that wouldn't be 100% accurate.

[20:24] Jesse McAnally: This is crazy. Oh, so it takes an hour and 20 minutes for him to actually show up. So you have to you sit through an hour of 20 minutes of this man complaining at you. There's like random seconds of when he closes his eyes. He flashes to death. Which is cool. The first one was like Jim turning around like you know, one of those Jim Carrey faces. Alan made a very funny face. You can't see it, but it was really funny.

[20:49] Alan Seales: Hilarious.

[20:50] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, all the laughing you guys are doing right now. It's really telling. And unfortunately. In High Strung, we have to hear Bob Oda Kirk play Thane for how many.

[21:00] Alan Seales: Steve Oda Kirk.

[21:01] Jesse McAnally: Did I say Bob Bob O'Dirk? I said Bob Oda Kirk. You know, if we did this whole movie, but Bob Odenkirk was Thane, I think it would actually be pretty good.

[21:10] Alan Seales: So Bob Odenkirk has an N in it, Odenkirk.

[21:13] Jesse McAnally: Bob Odinkirk and Steve O De Kirk. Right. I think Bob Odenkirk.

[21:20] Alan Seales: Brandon Mayhew.

[21:22] Jesse McAnally: Alright. Ah, here we go. Public masturbation.

[21:30] Alan Seales: What?

[21:32] Jesse McAnally: I don't get it. What's the kick? Why don't you do it at home like the rest of us with a big flat screen TV, 50 channels of pay-per-view?

[21:39] Alan Seales: In a Starbucks. That's nice.

[21:40] Jesse McAnally: That ain't me, man. You better call death.

[21:45] Alan Seales: Bob Odenkirk would have been very funny in this. Do you know what Bob Odenkirk is actually doing right now?

[21:50] Jesse McAnally: Recovering the cards.

[21:53] Alan Seales: I don't know.

[21:53] Jesse McAnally: No.

[21:54] Alan Seales: He had a heart attack.

[21:55] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, he did a while ago. Yeah, but he is doing a version of the room where he is playing uh the Tommy Wazoe part and they're playing it straight. Like they're using the script of the room and trying to make it with real actors. And I think that is so fucking cool, and I want to see it so badly. And I want him to do something like that for Ice Strong, you know.

[22:21] Alan Seales: Oh Mark.

[22:26] Jesse McAnally: What's up?

[22:29] Alan Seales: I have a problem. Lisa, she says that I hit her.

[22:34] Jesse McAnally: What?

[22:37] Alan Seales: No! It's not true. I mean, don't even ask.

[22:41] Jesse McAnally: Alright. Well.

[22:42] Alan Seales: I'm not making this up. This is not me goofing around. I nothing.

[22:45] Jesse McAnally: Alright, Bob Ok.

[22:46] Alan Seales: Bob Odenkirk.

[22:47] Jesse McAnally: Bob Odenkirk, after you listen to this episode, reach out to us and and make it happen. We'll help we'll produce it for you.

[22:54] Alan Seales: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's it's already finished. It just needs to come out.

[22:56] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, why why he had not come out? Why can't I have this now?

[23:00] Alan Seales: Well, the film was originally set to release spring of 2023, so some but which already fucking passed, so but they're as of March, no release date. So March of the couple of strikes in between there, so I'm gonna consider those. But it's basically done by the looks of it.

[23:15] Jesse McAnally: So Greg Sistero is in this version. He's playing Chris R.

[23:19] Alan Seales: That's fucking hilarious.

[23:21] Jesse McAnally: R. Chris R. Yes, that's an actual Have you seen the room, Alan?

[23:26] Alan Seales: No.

[23:26] Jesse McAnally: Oh what? You've been deprived. Everybody betrayed me. I fed up with this world. The room, the 20 the 2019 film, 2003.

[23:36] Alan Seales: 2003.

[23:38] Jesse McAnally: I don't know if you've ever read the script to the room. It is indecipherable, even if you're just reading it. I think truly nonsense. I think I've read chunks when I read The Disaster Artist. Like reading it on a page. I didn't realize how impossible it was. Credit to the actors for doing as good as they did then, because it's it's impossible. Yeah, but yeah, Alan's The Room is one of the best so bad it's good movies of all time. How have you not seen that, Alan?

[24:01] Alan Seales: Yeah, it's incredible.

[24:04] Jesse McAnally: Okay, watch it!

[24:06] Alan Seales: You've seen Kung Pao, but you haven't seen the room. Alan, this is so important.

[24:12] Jesse McAnally: Um I'm sorry. How about we go into a letterbox game?

[24:18] Alan Seales: Yeah, let's just go right to letterbox. No critic reviewed this shock of all shows.

[24:22] Jesse McAnally: What?

[24:23] Jesse McAnally: Or maybe they did and I didn't find it, but I didn't bother to look that hard because this movie fucking sucks.

[24:28] Alan Seales: So like how do you really feel?

[24:29] Jesse McAnally: I hate this movie.

[24:30] Jesse McAnally: Anyway, letterbox game.

[24:33] Jesse McAnally: This is a fun game where I'm gonna read real letterbox reviews for High Strung nineteen ninety-two.

[24:39] Jesse McAnally: And Jess and Alan are gonna guess if it's a one or a five based on no context whatsoever.

[24:45] Jesse McAnally: Alright, uh Alan, you're gonna go first.

[24:48] Alan Seales: I I'm deciding.

[24:52] Jesse McAnally: Good!

[24:53] Alan Seales: Alright!

[24:54] Alan Seales: Let's do it!

[24:55] Alan Seales: Let's go!

[24:56] Jesse McAnally: I believe in you!

[24:57] Alan Seales: Uh uh uh uh this movie could only have been made in the nineties.

[25:02] Jesse McAnally: Oh, dude, I thought these were all gonna be ones, but now that one kind of hasn't been.

[25:05] Alan Seales: No, they're not all ones.

[25:07] Alan Seales: Some people like this movie.

[25:08] Jesse McAnally: Oh and those people are liked Reality Bites too.

[25:12] Alan Seales: Okay, say it say it again.

[25:13] Jesse McAnally: Say it again, say it again.

[25:14] Alan Seales: This movie could only have been made in the nineties.

[25:18] Jesse McAnally: That sounded like a one to me, Alan.

[25:20] Alan Seales: Yeah.

[25:20] Alan Seales: I'm going with one on that one.

[25:21] Jesse McAnally: That's a five, Jess was.

[25:23] Alan Seales: I knew it.

[25:23] Alan Seales: I knew it.

[25:24] Jesse McAnally: Damn it, Jesse.

[25:26] Alan Seales: Yeah.

[25:28] Jesse McAnally: Alright.

[25:29] Jesse McAnally: Jess.

[25:30] Jesse McAnally: I'm ready.

[25:30] Jesse McAnally: If Reddit didn't exist, this would be a lot funnier.

[25:36] Alan Seales: That's a five.

[25:36] Jesse McAnally: That's totally.

[25:37] Alan Seales: That's no, that's a one.

[25:38] Alan Seales: That's a hundred percent of one, you're correct.

[25:40] Jesse McAnally: Damn it.

[25:41] Alan Seales: If they go to Reddit just to hear someone bitch all day.

[25:45] Jesse McAnally: Alright, Alan.

[25:46] Jesse McAnally: I am.

[25:47] Alan Seales: I love being angry all the time.

[25:49] Jesse McAnally: That sounds like a one to me.

[25:52] Alan Seales: Don't you know?

[25:54] Alan Seales: Alan goes inside Jess.

[25:56] Alan Seales: Or it could be a five.

[25:57] Jesse McAnally: Are you saying that to try to be to try to make me di knowing I'm gonna disagree with you?

[26:02] Alan Seales: But are you saying that knowing I'm knowing that I'm gonna do it?

[26:04] Jesse McAnally: No, no.

[26:05] Jesse McAnally: The more you think about it, it could be a five.

[26:07] Alan Seales: Honestly, Alan, the way you play this game is you don't think.

[26:10] Jesse McAnally: Also, you're correct.

[26:11] Jesse McAnally: It's a five.

[26:12] Alan Seales: Yes.

[26:12] Alan Seales: Alright, Jez.

[26:14] Jesse McAnally: My breakfast with Odin Kirk.

[26:16] Alan Seales: This is it's misspelled.

[26:18] Alan Seales: Oh.

[26:19] Alan Seales: Dinkirk.

[26:20] Alan Seales: It's Ode Kirk, but they misspelled it.

[26:22] Jesse McAnally: Well well, the question is, I th they said breakfast, right?

[26:25] Alan Seales: My breakfast, because he only eats cereal.

[26:27] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, yeah, the man.

[26:30] Alan Seales: He sucks.

[26:32] Alan Seales: Because here's here's where I'm gonna put my my my strange hat on.

[26:37] Alan Seales: My dinner with Andre was a film starring other people, and it's like one of those fancy films where it's just about someone talking.

[26:44] Alan Seales: But then Andy Kaufman made a parody film about him going to eat with some uh uh wrestler named Blassie, and he called it my breakfast with Blossy.

[26:55] Jesse McAnally: So is this a reference to that film, or is it just me overthinking?

[26:59] Alan Seales: I'm getting another one.

[27:00] Alan Seales: I think they just made a joke.

[27:01] Jesse McAnally: But that's a five for you?

[27:02] Alan Seales: Yeah.

[27:03] Jesse McAnally: That is correct.

[27:04] Alan Seales: Damn it, Jesse.

[27:05] Alan Seales: Why'd you get so good at this game?

[27:06] Jesse McAnally: Because he does it all the time.

[27:14] Alan Seales: The more you write these, the better you get at them because you learn how the other person writes them.

[27:17] Jesse McAnally: So alright, I need to write.

[27:19] Alan Seales: Uh yeah, yeah, yeah, that's me.

[27:21] Alan Seales: You tell me when there's a more terrifying poster on this app, and I will show you the poster on letterbox right now.

[27:29] Jesse McAnally: Which one is it?

[27:30] Alan Seales: The Jim Carrey one or the face one.

[27:31] Jesse McAnally: Oh, you'll see.

[27:32] Alan Seales: Oh, it's the face one.

[27:35] Alan Seales: The face one.

[27:36] Alan Seales: Um I I I love that one because it is very reminiscent of his future work on thumb wars and shit.

[27:42] Alan Seales: It looks like a thumb.

[27:43] Jesse McAnally: You're right.

[27:44] Alan Seales: Uh alright.

[27:45] Jesse McAnally: Re read it, read the thing again.

[27:46] Alan Seales: Alright.

[27:47] Alan Seales: Based on that, what your image.

[27:48] Jesse McAnally: You tell me when there's a more terrifying poster on this app.

[27:51] Alan Seales: That's a one.

[27:52] Jesse McAnally: That's a five.

[27:53] Alan Seales: Fuck the fuck.

[27:53] Jesse McAnally: Jesus Jason.

[27:55] Alan Seales: I don't write these, I just find them.

[27:58] Jesse McAnally: Oh Jez.

[28:00] Jesse McAnally: Yes.

[28:01] Jesse McAnally: Angry White Man yells at nobody.

[28:03] Alan Seales: The movie.

[28:07] Jesse McAnally: It's called the Musicals with Cheese podcast.

[28:09] Alan Seales: What are you talking about?

[28:10] Jesse McAnally: I think that's uh five.

[28:12] Alan Seales: That's correct.

[28:13] Alan Seales: I would have gone with five.

[28:14] Jesse McAnally: I would have done that.

[28:16] Alan Seales: Alright.

[28:16] Alan Seales: Yes.

[28:18] Alan Seales: I'm an old curmudgeon.

[28:19] Alan Seales: This is me.

[28:20] Jesse McAnally: That sounds like a five to me.

[28:22] Alan Seales: Yeah, that's a good one.

[28:22] Alan Seales: That is correct.

[28:23] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, BD.

[28:25] Jesse McAnally: Yeah.

[28:27] Jesse McAnally: Death is hot.

[28:28] Jesse McAnally: You know what?

[28:28] Jesse McAnally: I'm gonna I'm gonna go against my gut, because maybe then me and Alan can get to a tie.

[28:32] Jesse McAnally: I'm going with a one here.

[28:34] Alan Seales: That's a one.

[28:35] Jesse McAnally: Gut!

[28:37] Alan Seales: Damn it!

[28:37] Jesse McAnally: Okay, I'll do one more.

[28:39] Alan Seales: Okay.

[28:39] Jesse McAnally: Wait, so if I get this retide, or am I have I lost it?

[28:44] Alan Seales: Yeah.

[28:44] Alan Seales: Okay, okay.

[28:45] Alan Seales: Um, we should be bonus round at the end.

[28:47] Alan Seales: There is two left, Alan.

[28:48] Alan Seales: Do you want to do the next two to see if you can tie?

[28:51] Alan Seales: Sure.

[28:51] Alan Seales: If if my opposing counsel uh agrees to this appeal.

[28:56] Jesse McAnally: Whatever.

[28:57] Alan Seales: This isn't a real game.

[28:58] Alan Seales: This is a fake game.

[29:01] Jesse McAnally: Alright, Alan.

[29:00] Alan Seales: There's no stakes here.

[29:03] Alan Seales: Alright, first review.

[29:05] Alan Seales: Okay.

[29:05] Alan Seales: I'm just glad a movie got made.

[29:06] Jesse McAnally: Sounds like a five to me.

[29:08] Alan Seales: I'm just glad a movie got made.

[29:09] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, that's a five.

[29:09] Alan Seales: That's a one.

[29:10] Jesse McAnally: Damn, dude fucking true.

[29:11] Alan Seales: Okay.

[29:12] Alan Seales: Alright.

[29:12] Alan Seales: Last one.

[29:13] Alan Seales: I changed my mind.

[29:15] Jesse McAnally: Five.

[29:16] Alan Seales: One.

[29:17] Jesse McAnally: You are a loser, Alan Seales.

[29:19] Alan Seales: Yes, win!

[29:21] Alan Seales: I am the champion, my friend.

[29:26] Jesse McAnally: Don't worry, next week we'll back go back to Amazon reviews, which are slightly easier to win because it's a little hard to hide those.

[29:32] Alan Seales: Strangely easier but more chaotic.

[29:34] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, they're chaotic but easier.

[29:36] Alan Seales: Alright.

[29:37] Alan Seales: Alright, alright.

[29:38] Jesse McAnally: Oh, look.

[29:39] Jesse McAnally: The Room made 4.988 million dollars.

[29:42] Alan Seales: Yeah, on um uh I believe it.

[29:44] Alan Seales: Yeah, on a frequent like re-release screens.

[29:47] Jesse McAnally: I just looked back on my other screen and saw that my Google screen.

[29:49] Jesse McAnally: I'm pretty sure that's what Tommy was spent to have the bullbo billboard um a button Los Angeles for five years nonstop.

[29:57] Alan Seales: Yeah, basically.

[29:58] Alan Seales: You paid a lot of money to have billboards.

[30:01] Alan Seales: And people are just like, what the fuck is this building?

[30:04] Alan Seales: It's not it's not telling me a day to see this movie, it's just saying that this movie exists.

[30:08] Jesse McAnally: I want to go to a screening of The Room where they throw spoons at the screens so bad.

[30:11] Alan Seales: Like just go to Rocky Horror, it's better.

[30:14] Jesse McAnally: I know but I want to go to The Room.

[30:15] Alan Seales: Although I got a high stream.

[30:19] Alan Seales: I'm gonna go to high school.

[30:20] Alan Seales: I lived Rocky Horror.

[30:21] Alan Seales: Where you eat cereal through the whole movie.

[30:23] Alan Seales: And you whine and bitch to your audience.

[30:26] Alan Seales: And you complain to your like your friend you brought with you.

[30:28] Jesse McAnally: Where the whole audience is yelling back at Bob Oda Kirk.

[30:31] Alan Seales: Steve Oda Kirk.

[30:32] Jesse McAnally: Bob Oda.

[30:33] Alan Seales: Oh, yeah.

[30:34] Alan Seales: Okay, Bob Odinkirk, Steve O'Dekirk.

[30:38] Jesse McAnally: You know, how how many times have they gotten confused by casting directors, do you think?

[30:45] Alan Seales: Probably not much because Steve Oda Kirk is not an actor most of the time.

[30:49] Alan Seales: Not anymore.

[30:50] Alan Seales: Unless you count his thumb.

[30:52] Jesse McAnally: Yeah.

[30:52] Jesse McAnally: I've never seen Thumb more, so I generally do not know what it is.

[30:56] Alan Seales: It's it's not great.

[30:58] Alan Seales: The other weird thing that Steve Odekirk was behind that is a remnant of my childhood.

[31:04] Alan Seales: I don't know if you recall this, but he did an IMAX film that was in 3D called Santa versus Snowman, where it's just this intense like animation reel where Santa fights a snowman.

[31:17] Alan Seales: And it played in IMAX theaters, and I saw the ads everywhere as a kid where it's just like, come s because I had like one of the rare IMAX theaters.

[31:24] Alan Seales: They were much rarer back then.

[31:26] Alan Seales: Come see this weird animation short in IMAX.

[31:29] Jesse McAnally: Hashtag but why?

[31:31] Alan Seales: Once in every generation, there is a holiday story that steals the hearts of millions.

[31:38] Alan Seales: From the Academy Award-nominated team that brought you Jimmy Neutron comes the first ever IMAX 3D holiday animated feature.

[31:50] Alan Seales: Santa versus the Snowman.

[31:52] Alan Seales: 3D.

[31:54] Jesse McAnally: Hey everybody!

[31:56] Alan Seales: Hey Santa!

[32:01] Jesse McAnally: And I was like, Mom, can we see that?

[32:03] Alan Seales: She's like, it looks like shit.

[32:04] Jesse McAnally: We're not gonna see that.

[32:06] Alan Seales: And that was Is that your mom's voice?

[32:08] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, you're all right.

[32:09] Alan Seales: Have you met my mother?

[32:10] Jesse McAnally: I've never met your mother.

[32:11] Alan Seales: Yes, she is.

[32:13] Alan Seales: Jesse, we're not gonna see that.

[32:15] Jesse McAnally: That looks like shit.

[32:16] Alan Seales: No, no, it's it's much more up here.

[32:18] Alan Seales: Like what we are gonna see that we're gonna go to a big thing.

[32:23] Alan Seales: We're gonna watch I Strung at home instead, which is way better.

[32:26] Jesse McAnally: I'm not buying you Thumb War.

[32:29] Alan Seales: Stop asking.

[32:31] Alan Seales: I love my mother, but she is a heavy smoker, and that is the one impression I can actually do at a drop of a hat.

[32:38] Jesse McAnally: Alright.

[32:38] Alan Seales: It's a good one to have.

[32:40] Jesse McAnally: What is our overall thoughts?

[32:41] Jesse McAnally: And is this an alrighty then or a no spank you?

[32:45] Alan Seales: Okay, let's let's all say this on three.

[32:47] Alan Seales: Uh let's just get it over with.

[32:49] Jesse McAnally: One.

[32:49] Alan Seales: One, two, three, no, no.

[32:52] Jesse McAnally: Alrighty.

[32:53] Alan Seales: No, shut up!

[32:54] Alan Seales: The Antious Acid wasn't that good.

[32:57] Jesse McAnally: I think that this is an impressive little film where a man had a dream, he stole my arms from Russians, squandered it, and to fulfill his own ambitions.

[33:09] Alan Seales: And you know what?

[33:10] Alan Seales: He hired some great talent to some supplement him.

[33:12] Alan Seales: Like Jim Carrey, Tom F. Wilson, and truly I think some of the cinematography was impressive.

[33:19] Jesse McAnally: But you didn't like it, and you gave it an alrighty then?

[33:23] Alan Seales: I mean, are we comparing it to the porn?

[33:25] Jesse McAnally: No, we're comparing it to just actual things that exist in the world that aren't this that don't suck.

[33:32] Alan Seales: Things that aren't this.

[33:34] Alan Seales: And it's fairly short.

[33:35] Alan Seales: Like, compare this to like how long Pink Cadillac and The Deadpool were.

[33:41] Jesse McAnally: If this was half an hour, I'd agree with you, but it's a 90 minute movie.

[33:45] Alan Seales: And I think it uses Jim Carrey pretty well, especially in that scene.

[33:48] Jesse McAnally: That scene that he's in, he's great in.

[33:50] Alan Seales: The scene.

[33:52] Jesse McAnally: I mean, I'm j I'm just saying that I think there's a little more to this little movie that could than I gotta go, guys.

[34:03] Alan Seales: This movie is fucking horrendous.

[34:05] Jesse McAnally: Don't listen to him.

[34:07] Alan Seales: You know what?

[34:07] Alan Seales: It's on YouTube for free.

[34:09] Jesse McAnally: Why don't you develop your own opinions?

[34:11] Alan Seales: Wait a second.

[34:11] Alan Seales: Kirsten Dunst was in this?

[34:14] Jesse McAnally: Oh yeah, she was the little girl in the flashback.

[34:16] Alan Seales: She's the child in the flashback rebound.

[34:19] Jesse McAnally: And you know, Jim Carrey and her will work together once again in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

[34:24] Alan Seales: Yeah.

[34:25] Alan Seales: But anyway, I'm sticking with it.

[34:28] Alan Seales: I'm thinking those spank you, uh, I hate men complaining at me for an hour and a half, and I never want it to happen again.

[34:37] Jesse McAnally: So let me explain to you why you hate that.

[34:39] Alan Seales: Okay.

[34:43] Jesse McAnally: You know, do you agree with us and uh their wrong opinions?

[34:47] Alan Seales: Let us know in the comments.

[34:49] Jesse McAnally: Uh Spotify has comments now, and I feel like I should use that more often.

[34:53] Alan Seales: I think it's neat.

[34:54] Jesse McAnally: Um anything else we have left to say before we wrap this on up?

[34:58] Alan Seales: Uh shout out to my sister who listens to all listens to all these episodes.

[35:02] Jesse McAnally: Thank you for listening.

[35:03] Alan Seales: And we got us some cool stuff coming up.

[35:05] Alan Seales: We're back to In Living Color next week.

[35:07] Jesse McAnally: We're on iTunes and Spotify carried away with Justin Allen.

[35:10] Alan Seales: Twitter I carried a music way.

[35:12] Jesse McAnally: If we're gonna try that fucking again.

[35:13] Alan Seales: We're on Twitter I carried away podcast at gmail.com to tell us how wrong they are about High Strung and how it's technically the greatest movie ever.

[35:22] Alan Seales: Title Card is created by Grace Aki.

[35:25] Alan Seales: Follow them on Instagram at It's Grace Aki.

[35:27] Alan Seales: This show is produced and edited by Liz Eston.

[35:30] Alan Seales: Our theme song is I Choose You by the band.

[35:33] Jesse McAnally: Thanks.

[35:33] Alan Seales: Thank you to the Broadway Podcast Network for Ambasson.

[35:36] Alan Seales: And for not kicking us off for masturbating at a Hollywood video.

[35:41] Jesse McAnally: Oh boy.

[35:43] Alan Seales: You know what?
