[0:37] Caleb Dicke: Yes. Cheers!

[0:41] Elliott Mattox: Welcome to this week's episode of Hungover, our Equity One miniseries where we follow some of your favorite theater artists on their way back to the stage. I'm Elliott.

[0:50] Caleb Dicke: And I'm Caleb. Good morning.

[0:53] Elliott Mattox: Good morning. We are here with our fantastic guest, Pierre Jean Gonzalez.

[0:59] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Hi, baby. Good morning. I'm giving you base realness in the morning.

[1:04] Elliott Mattox: Yes.

[1:05] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: She's usually a high tenor, but not this morning.

[1:09] Caleb Dicke: You get there.

[1:10] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: You get there as the day goes. It's called a warm up.

[1:14] Elliott Mattox: Yes.

[1:15] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Oh my god. Thank you so much for having me again. I just want to say congratulations on the first episode. I love it.

[1:22] Caleb Dicke: Thank you!

[1:23] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: My mother's a fan now.

[1:24] Elliott Mattox: Yeah.

[1:25] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: We love a mom fan. Mom listened to it about like five times already. And every time she has a new question, she says this. And I'm like, Mom, Mom, I'm busy, Mom. We can't talk about the podcast right now, Mom.

[1:39] Caleb Dicke: It's so funny.

[1:40] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: I love that. It's so funny. Yes. We love moms. Hi, Mom. Shout out to Mom.

[1:46] Elliott Mattox: Yes. So, Pierre, where are you coming to us from?

[1:51] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: So, I'm coming to you from Atlanta, Georgia. We are here. We've been in rehearsal now for a couple of weeks. And it's crazy, guys. This is crazy.

[2:01] Caleb Dicke: Oh my gosh.

[2:03] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Yeah. No, no. I think it's just the closer and closer we're getting to doing the show. My mind is like, is this really happening? Right? You know, like coming from, you know, COVID. Like every week they're like, no, no, no. So, like, now they're like, yes, yes. Still yes. Yes, right now. Yes. Get it right. Come on, let's go. It's still happening. So, it's been amazing. I feel very proud of all the people on this tour, because everybody's freaking killing it. Like, killing it. You know, coming, showing up prepared. And here we go.

[2:43] Caleb Dicke: Well, tell us about kind of what that beginning of the rehearsal process was like getting back into it.

[2:49] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: So, what was really amazing, the Hamilton company gave us basically, I want to say like maybe like four to five days to like really just kind of talk. Right?

[3:01] Caleb Dicke: Nice.

[3:03] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Not only just talking about what's happened and kind of giving a space to express our feelings, but also talking about the social injustice that's been happening and what our show represents and what we expect from Hamilton and what we as people of color are looking for and what we need. So, they were so, so amazing about that. And I was actually taken back. I'm not even going to lie. I was surprised. I was like, oh, y'all really care? Y'all really want to hear what I got to say? You know? So, it's been an amazing healing process. It's been a little triggering at times, you know, because we're still having these conversations, you know, and it's uncomfortable. But what's been really beautiful is that they are just giving us the space to express ourselves. You know what I mean? And just, we got to do a lot of spiritual healing, yoga, meditation, you know, and at first, it's a little hard for me, you know, because me, I showed up, I showed up ready, y'all.

[4:00] Elliott Mattox: Yes.

[4:01] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: My first day, I showed up, I was like, you know, I am not, I was like, I'm ready. You're ready. What song you want? Where are we starting? Where are we going from? Okay. So, it was an adjustment for me to kind of sit down and be like, well, Pierre, like, they're allowing us to take time to really heal, you know, and to talk about the things that maybe we wouldn't have spoke about before this year off. So, I had to adjust a little bit, un poquito. But now, we started from such a centered place and all of us being honest about how we feel about this process. Like, it's still, the idea of going up on stage and being in a theater full of people is still a little terrifying, you know?

[4:49] Caleb Dicke: Yeah.

[4:50] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: It's still a little scary. The theater, everybody has to wear masks. It's, they're taking care of us and I feel safe, but there still is that thing that's there that, you know, we're still in Atlanta, Georgia, where the numbers are kind of crazy right now. You know, they say that they're going to get better and they are slowly and gradually. What's really cool, the area that I'm in now on this downtown area is really, really like super gay and like, I'm just, I'm like, I'm living for it. I'm rooting for it. I was surprised. I'm like walking down the street, seeing flags everywhere. I was like.

[5:22] Caleb Dicke: You're like, hey sis, what's up?

[5:24] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: I'm like, hey. So, it's been really beautiful, a beautiful process. I miss, I miss, I miss my fiancé. I miss home.

[5:34] Elliott Mattox: I know.

[5:36] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: You know, guys, we got so used to it.

[5:39] Caleb Dicke: Yeah.

[5:40] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Having all that time. It's so, I can imagine. It's interesting that you all started with just like a couple of days of like talking because I think about that all the time. Like, we haven't been in that room, like where, with people and like doing our job like that in so long. So, like just getting used to like, oh, this is the company I'm with. This is my day-to-day interactions. Like, it sounds so silly, but like, we've been like starved of that. So, it's good that you didn't have to like, just like hit the ground running.

[6:15] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: It was, it was very, very interesting because I didn't expect that.

[6:19] Caleb Dicke: Right.

[6:20] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: You know, she came with her book. She was like, my first year. My water bottle. She did the summer reading. Got the pizza, got the pizza, pizza. Like you were ready.

[6:32] Elliott Mattox: I have my pencil case. I have my like, I was ready, you know? So, and they were like, they were like, no, absolutely not. They were like, sit down. We're going to, and also we did a lot of different training. Sexual harassment training, social injustice training. They gave us their new mission as a company, as a corporation, Hamilton, and what they're trying to do and what was really cool is that with the Phillip company, I decided to get a couple people together and like, how can we create access for the show? That's been something that I've been struggling with before when I was on the show, and this is something that I verbally said constantly, how are we going to get more brown people into those seats, brown and black people into those seats physically?

And Hamilton has already been doing that. So my thing coming into this now is like, they did their job by giving us these platforms. What are we going to do? Right. And that's what I kind of called out everybody in my company in a sense of like, this is cute. We can keep asking Hamilton. We can keep asking all these corporations. You can keep asking, what are you going to do? But what are we going to do now as Phillip company in this city in Atlanta? So Keontae, who is one of, is our woman for here. She's actually from Atlanta. Her mother works for the school districts. So what we're doing is we're bringing families into the show.

[8:03] Caleb Dicke: Amazing.

[8:04] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Groups of families, kids who are either in theater or kids who've never seen theater before. But the idea more is about creating access, not only just for kids, but for the adults who've never seen these shows or who don't even know what Broadway shows are like, you know what I mean? So, so the idea was to bring these families in. And then give them some money to, to just go out to dinner and just come see the show.

[8:22] Caleb Dicke: Yeah. Have a night out. Yeah.

[8:23] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Just to have a night out. Yeah. And that's been our plan. And what, like we're, we're keeping it, you know, small, like, we're doing five families at a time in each city, you know, whatever, whatever we can do physically, you know what I mean? To, to create that access. And it turned into something and now it's going to be called access initiative. And us as a Phillip company, we'll be doing it hopefully in every city.

[8:43] Caleb Dicke: That's so cool.

[8:44] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: And I know that's something that you talked about when we, you know, when we first spoke about how that was something you were wanting to, despite the kind of circumstances still bring into your experience with, with Hamilton. So that's really exciting that you're getting to have that experience alongside the new kind of like mindfulness in the company.

[9:04] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Yeah. It's, it's been really cool. Really beautiful and a little humbling at the end of the day. Like, cause I, I still have a little bit of guilt, but our business, ours, our industry is still not healed yet. Do you know what I mean? And it's, it's still kind of hard for me a little bit to enjoy it as much as I want to, because I know that there's so much work that still needs to be done. You know what I mean? Just because our company, this company, this show is open. That doesn't mean I don't want to lose the, the mind. The mindset that I've been having. Deminer recon productions with, you know, just trying to just help people and, and not only my friends, but other artists who feel not seen.

So, so a part of me is still trying to actively find ways to help and to do more. You know, I can't wait till I'm like, just running the show. Cause I'm like, I'm like, all right. I need to be able to like, okay. All right. And I, I was, you know, I told you, I was a standby before, so that was like my job. My job was to rehearse. So I cannot wait to like, just have to do a show at night. Cause I'm going to be taking over the world during the day.

[10:10] Caleb Dicke: Right.

[10:11] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Going back to the families earlier. Will you be able to like, talk to them afterwards? Or is there some COVID protocols where you won't get to like, interact with them very much?

[10:20] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: We can, it's, Ooh, it's crazy. We started off the first week getting tested once a week. We're here now to a third, third week, third, fourth week. And we have to get tested three times a week. Like every, every day it's changing. Yeah. You know what I mean? So it's like.

[10:34] Caleb Dicke: It's like,

[10:35] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: It's like,

[10:36] Caleb Dicke: It's like,

[14:53] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: It's like,

[14:54] Caleb Dicke: It's like,

[14:55] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: It's like,

[14:56] Caleb Dicke: It's like,

[14:57] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: It's like,

[14:58] Caleb Dicke: It's like,

[14:59] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: It's like.

[14:59] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Yeah. Well, and that must be like, you know, that's probably a change from, you know, a life on tour that we might have known before, where kind of the fun is like going out and exploring and kind of like seeing the city. But if there's that extra kind of layer of precaution, like, I don't know, I mean, are you... do you think once things get going, will you have a little bit more, a little bit less anxiety about it?

[15:27] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: I think so. I think so, as long as we're continuously trying to just be conscious of our choices and just trying to be safe. Like I'm going to plan something. I'm planning something. So by the time this comes out, it would already happen. But I'm planning something for the whole crew and company just to get a space for an hour, like to do an open bar. And I already spoke to the hotels connected to the hotel. And what they're going to do is to sanitize it all. And I think that's going to be one of the things that we're going to have to do, is to make sure that we have, like, literally, whoever's working needs to be, I mean, I can't legally say that, but like, okay, okay, you know what I'm saying?

And they've been very accommodating and like, thank God, thank God that we're able to, I'm privileged enough to do something like that for us, you know what I mean? And I know that that's a privilege. But just like so people can blow off a little bit of steam and feel somewhat safe, you know, because it's hard. It's hard being on tour and then not being, and then you can't even go out to drink or like you get anxiety because you just want to just get a drink after rehearsal. That's crazy, you know? So we're just trying to find different ways to kind of hang out safely. And that's kind of like been the thing, like, thank God we have a good group of people. And you know, a lot of the buildings we have, like have those like, you know, common spaces and things like that. So, you know, let's get a little bar, let's hang out together, let's do-do-do-do-do-do. And then let's go home, you know, type of thing.

[16:57] Caleb Dicke: Well, and your tour heads north, right?

[17:02] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: So we go, we're going south real quick. We're going to go to Jacksonville for two weeks, which is, pray, you'll be locked away that week. Pray. Pray. Well, what's been good is that we are constantly in communications with our producers. They're letting us know weekly, like what's happening in the cities, how the numbers are looking. They're very, very vocal about if it feels unsafe, it feels crazy, we're not going to go there. If this city is not feeling good and the numbers are spiking and the theater, we're not going to go there. Wow. So that's been a really cool feeling, you know, just to hear that, that they're really looking into that. But after Jacksonville, then we head up. I can't wait because we're going to be so close to home. Like all of, all of our people could see this show. We're going to be in Philly, Providence, Buffalo, Rhode Island, Providence, Hartford, Buffalo, and then we go up to Ottawa.

[18:06] Caleb Dicke: Oh.

[18:07] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Yes. And I've never, I've never been, and I was in Toronto only for a little bit, which I loved. This is an international tour. How exciting.

[18:17] Caleb Dicke: I know. Oh. Oh. Crossing the border. She's international.

[18:21] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Yes. She's, she's traveled. She's traveled.

[18:25] Caleb Dicke: Traveled.

[18:27] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: And then, and then after that, I think we hit, um, we go a little mid, we go to like Louisville, St. Louis, uh, East Lansing, and then we actually go back to Grand Rapids, which I loved. I loved Grand Rapids. I don't know why, Grand Rapids was it for me. I was chilling over there. It's beautiful downtown.

[18:44] Caleb Dicke: I know. It's so funny. Like, I've never toured. Caleb, Caleb's never toured either.

[18:51] Caleb Dicke: No. But every, every person who has like toured as like, you know, like has a favorite city and then they like, everyone like talks about the same bar in the same city and it's very, it feels very left out. So.

[19:03] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: I think Cole loves like Fayetteville, Arkansas or something. It's like, I don't even, random.

[19:09] Caleb Dicke: It's random. I think I lived also in Kansas City. I was like, I was like, what are we going to do in Kansas City? And when I got there, I was like, yeah, you know, um, it's, it's, it's really interesting. I, this tour has really opened up my eyes to the United States and I, um, you know, the more going through this tour, actually, I've, I've never had so much pride of being an American, to tell you the truth, because it's, it really is amazing. It's amazing. The places that are here that, you know, and I grew up in New York. So in my head, I'm like, New York, that's it, all I know is New York, like, fuck it. You know? But it really just has opened my eyes to just all different types of people, different types of land.

I just, I love the green. I love the green being so close to the city. And that's what I love about these cities. Like, you know, cause I feel like, Ooh, I'm in New York and then I could walk two blocks and I feel like I'm like by the woods doing a trail, you know what I mean? I think that's so beautiful. And like, yeah, it's, it's been a really, really cool experience. Really, really cool.

[20:17] Caleb Dicke: What are you looking forward to most? Because by the time our listeners hear this, you will have actually had your first performances. What are you looking forward to most about getting back?

[20:29] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: I am, I'm just looking forward to just, Oh, that's my fiance, sorry. Hey Patrick! Hi Sanny! He went and got me some Starbucks. I love him so much. I am, I am really excited to be honest, to just, just like run it. I just want to run it. I just want to get like my momentum into it because I feel like with, with, with Hamilton, all the work that we do, the scene work, it's like, it's great. I want to, I want to sew it all together and kind of like get my rhythm and that's what I'm really excited about. And I'm excited for just the people to see it. I'm excited to hear the audience. I want to hear the roar. We've been rehearsing the show, like even in the, you know, we just got into the theater rehearsing the show and you know, it's like during tech, like rehearsals.

So I'm like, I am not throwing away my shot. And then all you hear is. You know what I'm like, I'm, I'm really excited for that adrenaline for the audience to see it just to, just to bless the world with, with theater again, like we're so hungry for it. We're so ready. We're so ready. We're so ready. I'm very, very excited for that. And just for the world to see it. Let's go. Let's do this. Let's go.

[21:59] Caleb Dicke: I know we have some quick, I'm calling them quick cues now. Easy questions. Are you ready?

[22:05] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Quick cues. Quick cues.

[22:07] Caleb Dicke: Okay. Part two. Favorite rehearsal snack.

[22:13] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Right now. Oh my God. No, because I've been going back and forth. Okay. So, oh, a peach. A peach. You're in Atlanta. The peaches. Juicy. Oh my God. Because they're still firm. Yeah. I remember buying, I remember like buying one. I'm like, oh, it's not ready, but I'm hungry. And then biting into it. And then like, I don't know what happened, but it's just juicy and soft on the inside. So like a peach, peach is my number one right now. And then an apple, an apple and a peach. Solid. Two items that come with natural wrapping paper. Like you don't have to put them in a plastic bag. They have a natural wrapping. Good for the environment. That's how I see it. I was going to say the individual gummy bears. I was like, the plastic is not good for the environment. I was like.

[23:04] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: I'm going to say, no, I have those granola bars. The nature, nature value. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. The honey ones that I'm like obsessed. Crunchy. Crunchy, yeah, yeah. Then I'm always like caught. If they're like, Pierre, we got to go from guns and ship. I'm like.

[23:23] Caleb Dicke: So funny. So this, this next question is the two parter. I'm not wishing summer away, but like we are getting near the end of the summer. What's a summer activity that you haven't gotten to do yet that like needs to happen on your day off?

[23:39] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: This is what I'm doing next week. Tubing. I want a tubing. I love tubing. I love kayaking. Like anything with water. I want to like hike somewhere. And then I want to just like sit on a tube and just for four hours, just go down.

[23:52] Caleb Dicke: Yes. The river. Wear a hat. You don't want any skin cancer. You got to keep coming.

[23:56] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Oh, no, no. I have. I have my like my baldy protectors. That's what I call them. Old school Kango hat.

[24:06] Caleb Dicke: Part two. Pumpkin spice season is upon us. So besides like pumpkin spice latte and a donut, where would you put pumpkin spice in a food? Like give me something like abstract, please.

[24:26] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Oh, I would do like a like a. OK. I've been making these bowls, these like grain bowls with like, you know, spinach and quinoa. And then I could do some like pineapple. I could do some pumpkin seeds. And then on top of the turkey, put some pumpkin like spice, like cook the ground turkey meat in that. That would be good. Savory. Savory pumpkin is is underrated. It really is. It really is. And we actually, you know, we actually put it in our beans. My mother liked to make Dominican beans. They use like chunks of pumpkin and they put it in it and the beans as well. And that's like some the bomb.

[25:03] Caleb Dicke: Yummy. Yes. Yeah. OK, so do you have any aches and pains as Hamilton, like bodily wise? Like were you hurting and how are you taking care of yourself?

[25:10] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Yo, my my neck muscles in my jaw. I didn't know that. I I was ready. But like, you know, the wrapping, the wrapping of it all, you know, like it's it kind of got me real quick because I remember like after two, three days of rehearsal, I was like, well, what's happening? Why am I like? So I've been like stretching out my jaw muscles, my neck muscles, you know, because I've been running and still working out, too. So I have to find places and times to just kind of relax my body. Right. And I'm doing a lot to it. Right. It's like, you know, I'm playing Hamilton for three hours. All you're doing is just going like, yeah, constantly.

[25:58] Caleb Dicke: So you've been in Atlanta for a while. Have you made any new discoveries of fun places?

[26:03] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Well, you haven't been going on much, but anything new discoveries in Atlanta? The parks, some of the parks here are really beautiful. There's a park right up the street from me, Piedmont, that I run in every day. And it's been just like spiritual because it's just the sun and the green. And and everybody over here in this area has dogs and everybody's so nice. And then everybody's just so nice. And he's like, hi, how are you? I'm like, I'm great. How are you? Full on conversations. People have no idea who they are. But it's it's been really it's just it's a beautiful feeling. And I think it's everybody's coming back from this year just with just more kindness. And I can feel it. I can feel that people are hungry to just say hi. Yeah. Like that's simple. You know, and it's been it's been really nice, even though we're like this. But like the eyes are bright.

[27:01] Caleb Dicke: Yeah.

[27:02] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: I'm smiling with the eyes. Eyebrows. That's what I've noticed in the pandemic. My eyebrows have gotten a workout like they are strong. She's stronger than she was before. She can tell a story now.

[27:16] Caleb Dicke: Yes.

[27:17] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: These brows can tell stories. Hello.

[27:21] Caleb Dicke: Last question. What's something that you've learned about yourself in this rehearsal process? Good or bad?

[27:26] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: I'm still super hard on myself. I'm like super, super hard on myself. And I need to do better with that. But that's a little bit of the perfectionist in me. And because this means so much to me. So I have to. I have to check myself. I said, you know, I'm going to talk to someone about these like these feelings because I don't want to. I want to make sure that I'm protecting my heart and protecting my mind. You know, because at the end of the day, we're playing pretend on stage. You know, it's supposed to be fun, right? So, yeah, that's that's something that I'm working on right now. It's just leading with grace.

[28:13] Caleb Dicke: Yes. I think we can all relate to that a little bit. And especially right now, where there's so much up and down, people getting back to work, people not getting back to work. We can all be a little easier on ourselves. You know, I made it through a pandemic. We're alive. We made it through. We are alive. How lucky we are to be alive right now. Period. Pun.

[28:39] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: Thank you so much. We're so excited for you to get back on stage.

[28:44] Pierre Jean Gonzalez: I'm so ready. I'm so ready. I can't wait to let you guys know how it feels, how it's going and how the preview and the opening is.
