[0:00] Andrew: We've got a mission to find the best song that's ever been on Glee.

[0:09] Andrew: There's no rhyme or reason to it, so don't get mad at me.

[0:18] Andrew: Gleek it by Gleek it, we'll rank everyone to see which song will move closer to spot number one.

[0:26] Andrew: Gleek of the Week, Gleek, Gleek, Gleek of the Week.

[0:32] Andrew: It's Gleek, Gleek of the Week.

[0:35] Andrew: I need a, I need a Gleek. I need two Gleeks. Where, where were they? Where would they be?

[0:44] Andrew: If I were a Gleek, where would I be?

[0:47] Ian: Da-da-da-da-da! Did someone call for two Gleeks?

[0:52] Andrew: Well, you seem like at least one of them.

[0:55] Ian: I'm definitely one.

[0:58] Lena: I heard there were, we were in need of one more Gleek in this room. Am I correct?

[1:03] Andrew: You would be absolutely correct. Oh my God.

[1:06] Ian: Thank God we're here. What do you need? What do you need, fellow Gleek? How can we help?

[1:10] Andrew: I needed, I needed some Gleeks to bark for me.

[1:15] Ian: Bow wow, sister, I'm here.

[1:18] Andrew: Audio medium, I'm joined by, I'm reading, Ian's name is Lillian Adler.

[1:25] Andrew: And so I was about to say, I'm joined by Lillian and Bark, Bark for me Gleek.

[1:32] Andrew: I'm joined by Ian and Lena.

[1:34] Andrew: Lena is wearing a Bark for me Gleek t-shirt made by Bug Girl.

[1:39] Ian: Bug Girl, at Bug Girl. Of course, shout out Bug Girl.

[1:43] Lena: With my angel Quinn for Bray and two crusty white dogs.

[1:46] Ian: And two crusty white dogs. Do you triple dog dare me to wear this to my corporate job tomorrow?

[1:52] Andrew: I was going to ask, in a recorded fashion, when do you plan on wearing that shirt?

[1:57] Lena: I think I'll probably wear it to the club.

[2:00] Lena: Hell yeah. Slash getting groceries slash living my life.

[2:05] Lena: And I probably would wear it to work. If I were like my pants, if my pants are tall enough, I'd probably wear them, wear it.

[2:11] Lena: Over the years, I've been like collecting Glee themed shirts that like only on like specific occasions, like Glee Dollar Bill, which is coming up.

[2:19] Lena: Like I'll like wear that. But like otherwise, I'm wearing one right now.

[2:24] Lena: Kate got it for me at the Gluseum over the weekend.

[2:27] Lena: It says WMHS Glee Club. And then it says Stage Girl on the back.

[2:33] Ian: It's very cute. I love that. Is this its premiere? Is this its debut?

[2:38] Lena: This is debut. This is my first time wearing it. I love that.

[2:42] Ian: Two shirts debuting today. I know, look at us.

[2:45] Lena: You can tell that I'm wearing a new shirt today. It's just, yeah.

[2:48] Ian: You have that new shirt glow about you. Yeah.

[2:52] Andrew: Okay, so how do we even do these episodes?

[2:54] Andrew: Well, Ian, I feel like you sent me a message over the weekend saying some things about recent episodes in particular.

[3:04] Ian: Do you want to start in discourse? Okay, I can do that.

[3:08] Ian: The thing is, the discourse I have is no discourse.

[3:12] Ian: Because what I texted you was that the most recent episode, the live stream was on the right side of history.

[3:18] Ian: I got very, very nervous listening to that episode because Nasty Rhythm Nation and House is Not a Home slash One Bell to Answer, One Less Bell to Answer, pardon me, are so near and dear to my heart.

[3:32] Andrew: Oh.

[3:33] Ian: Because I mean, like, I always, if there is like a song I love dearly that is sung by Santana Lopez, that is sung by Mercedes Jones, I'm like, it's safe. I don't need to sweat it. It's going to be fine.

[3:41] Ian: When it is sung by William Shuster, or when it is sung by Jacob Puckerman, I'm like, we need to separate the art from the artist.

[4:05] Andrew: Like, this number is amazing. Set your feelings about this character aside.

[4:11] Ian: I know you're not saying this, but there's, okay, you're saying Jacob Artists, they have shooters for Jacob Artists.

[4:16] Andrew: They don't have, Jake Puckerman does not.

[4:19] Ian: If I said Jacob Artists, I meant Jacob Puckerman.

[4:22] Andrew: You said Puckerman.

[4:23] Ian: Oh, you did? Okay.

[4:24] Andrew: Yeah.

[4:25] Ian: Oh, I'm being dumbass.

[4:26] Andrew: We have a witness. We have a witness.

[4:28] Ian: Did anyone call for a witness?

[4:30] Andrew: Anybody call for a dumbass? Me.

[4:37] Ian: Okay, wait, continue. Sorry.

[4:39] Ian: Okay. So, I don't know. I just, this has been stated many, many times, and I believe Matt specifically was saying this when he was on like two, three weeks ago, that we're so far in the Galactic at this point that it's like, even if I wouldn't have voted that way, it's like, I can easily make the case for why the song that went through went through.

[5:00] Ian: So it is, I don't have like any grand grievances, but if either of those competitions last week had gone the other way, I actually would have had huge grievances.

[5:12] Andrew: So you don't have, you don't have grievances prior at all?

[5:15] Ian: No.

[5:16] Andrew: You're good. I'm glad.

[5:17] Ian: I can, I can check the Galactic.

[5:19] Andrew: You don't need to have, no.

[5:21] Ian: There was, there was not a single competition where I was like head and hands, like, you've got to be kidding me.

[5:27] Ian: Every single time I was either fully agreed, or I was like, I disagree, but only by like 5%.

[5:34] Andrew: Yeah.

[5:35] Ian: Yeah.

[5:36] Andrew: Okay, I'm glad. I'm really, really glad.

[5:38] Ian: But Nasty Rhythm Nation, you are my girl.

[5:40] Ian: I love you dumbass forever.

[5:41] Lena: Oh my god, for real.

[5:42] Ian: And I'm so happy that you're in round five.

[5:45] Ian: I miss Sweet, because Lena, it lost, it won against Sweet Transvestite.

[5:52] Lena: Awful.

[5:53] Ian: Who am I also love dearly?

[5:54] Lena: Yeah.

[5:55] Ian: Who am I also love dearly?

[5:56] Ian: I really am obsessed. And I spoke my truth about it. And I'm really sad to see it go.

[6:02] Andrew: So.

[6:03] Ian: I, I understand. This is why I got, I was so nervous because I first texted you and I think I said something along the lines of, if Nasty Rhythm Nation loses this matchup, I'm going to kill every single person.

[6:17] Ian: I think is what I said. And then it didn't lose.

[6:20] Lena: Thank God.

[6:22] Ian: Because.

[6:23] Ian: Thank God, I didn't want to die.

[6:24] Lena: I know, seriously.

[6:25] Ian: Sweet came out with our lives on the other side.

[6:28] Lena: Yeah, I know.

[6:30] Ian: All of us, each of us.

[6:32] Lena: All of us.

[6:33] Ian: So you're all welcome.

[6:34] Lena: Including the beautiful girl reading this right now.

[6:37] Ian: Literally, that's you.

[6:39] Ian: Because Sweet Transvestite is genuinely a banger song. It's an amazing cover and it is a very worthy song. And then also Mercedes Jones is rightfully a well, a very loved character.

[6:55] Ian: I just, I feel very protective of Nasty Rhythm Nation because I, in my personal opinion, it is the best number to come out of the new cast.

[7:09] Ian: And so I am like, all of our original New Directioners whom we love dearly are all very well represented as they should be. But I'm like, if one singular number from the Season 4 and 5 crew could get through.

[7:21] Lena: And maybe you're considering this when you say a large statement like that. But, bitch is back, dress you up. Are we, we are considering that?

[7:30] Ian: What do you mean?

[7:31] Lena: Yeah.

[7:32] Ian: Oh.

[7:33] Ian: I don't, are you trying to say it's better than Nasty Rhythm Nation because it's not?

[7:37] Lena: I, I think I have a little bit more fun listening to it than Nasty Rhythm Nation.

[7:42] Ian: I literally, Nasty Rhythm Nation is.

[7:45] Ian: No, yeah, it's everything.

[7:47] Ian: The best Season 5 number to me, except for like, More Than a Feeling.

[7:53] Lena: Okay.

[7:54] Ian: And like the Finn tribute songs.

[7:55] Lena: Okay.

[7:56] Ian: That City of Angels aside, because that episode is just like special because of the Cory Monteith of it all. I think Nasty Rhythm Nation is my absolute favorite Season 5 number as a whole.

[8:06] Lena: The whole season, I love that.

[8:08] Ian: It's so good.

[8:09] Lena: Well, I mean, we brought it up in discussion that it's like, it's kind of hard to even like, think about like, what are the competitors of like, Season 5 numbers that really like, stand out.

[8:21] Ian: Blurred Lines.

[8:22] Lena: Blurred Lines.

[8:23] Ian: Yeah, Blurred Lines.

[8:24] Ian: We have One-Eyed Man.

[8:26] Lena: Perfect.

[8:27] Ian: We have.

[8:28] Lena: Don't Sleep on the Subway.

[8:29] Ian: Don't Sleep on the Subway, how could we forget?

[8:33] Ian: When they sing Melt With You at a dog park. Is that where that happens?

[8:38] Lena: Melt With You, which is that, that's the song that I always bring up that it's like, you forget that Glee does that song.

[8:44] Ian: Yeah.

[8:45] Lena: And they do.

[8:46] Ian: Girl, that episode.

[8:47] Lena: As soon as it's over, it's easily forgettable.

[8:49] Ian: Much love, Chris Colfer. I hate that episode.

[8:52] Lena: Oh, yeah.

[8:55] Ian: I think June Squibb singing Shooting Star is really fun, or Shining Star part of me.

[9:00] Lena: But overall, that is an episode that I am not thrilled to watch.

[9:07] Andrew: Okay.

[9:09] Ian: Yeah, I agree.

[9:10] Ian: I think that the scene that always stands out to me is I'm no longer watching Glee is when Kurt shows up to June Squibb's daughter's office and is like, hey, you need to come to this.

[9:25] Lena: And I'm like, I literally could give less of a fuck.

[9:29] Ian: You were like, remember when they all took cold medicine and then got high and performed mashups?

[9:34] Lena: No.

[9:35] Ian: Where's that show?

[9:36] Lena: Where is that show?

[9:37] Ian: I'm looking at this show and I'm like, I miss her.

[9:39] Lena: Seriously.

[9:40] Ian: I'm looking at this show and I'm trying to remember that feeling I had, that feeling of family.

[9:46] Lena: Because I know that this I know that that episode has shooters.

[9:51] Ian: Can we say one nice thing about that episode quickly?

[9:54] Lena: June Squibb sings Shining Star.

[9:56] Ian: I love Peter Pan.

[9:57] Lena: Yeah, I like June Squibb as Wendy.

[9:59] Ian: I think that's fun.

[10:00] Lena: Yeah.

[10:01] Ian: Yes.

[10:02] Lena: What does he say there?

[10:04] Ian: What does Will say there?

[10:06] Ian: I'm looking at you and I'm trying to feel that thing.

[10:08] Ian: I used to feel that feeling of family.

[10:10] Lena: You have made yourself a stranger to me.

[10:13] Ian: Oh my God.

[10:15] Lena: I was doing a mattress deep cut, of course.

[10:17] Ian: You're quoting Glee about Glee.

[10:19] Lena: About Glee.

[10:20] Ian: That's really, wow.

[10:21] Ian: One of my favorite Glee quotes, I think.

[10:23] Lena: It's layered.

[10:24] Ian: It is one of my favorite Glee quotes, too.

[10:26] Ian: You've become a stranger to me.

[10:27] Lena: It's so, part of my friendship's so cunty to say that.

[10:30] Ian: It is.

[10:31] Lena: Ten toes down.

[10:32] Ian: That is the most.

[10:33] Ian: OK, I'm talking to two actors. If you have rebuttals to this, let me know.

[10:38] Ian: I feel like that's the best acted scene of the series.

[10:42] Lena: Oh, it's so gorgeous.

[10:43] Ian: Yeah.

[10:44] Ian: They're both committed.

[10:46] Lena: I don't know, but it is so gorgeous.

[10:48] Ian: Terry curled up by the fridge and him sobbing.

[10:51] Lena: Yes.

[10:52] Ian: Oh my God, it's gorgeous.

[10:53] Lena: I was thinking about this last night because I was watching fucking Quest for Camelot, starring Jessalyn Gilsig as the main character, Kaylee.

[11:01] Ian: Of course.

[11:03] Lena: When is Jessalyn Gilsig getting her flowers?

[11:05] Ian: She's so talented.

[11:07] Lena: Listen, me and Elias had a conversation over the weekend where it was like, OK, maybe we're delving into movie talk right now, film talk.

[11:18] Ian: But the fact that much love Amy Madigan, that I'm like, I love Amy Madigan's performance.

[11:25] Ian: We'll get back to Glee.

[11:27] Lena: Trust.

[11:28] Ian: Amy Madigan's performance of Weapons.

[11:30] Ian: Literally my favorite performance of the year.

[11:32] Lena: But the campaign around it.

[11:33] Ian: But it should have been Jessalyn Gilsig in Weapons.

[11:35] Lena: Right?

[11:36] Ian: The fact that the campaign was like, oh, it's finally time for Amy Madigan to get her Oscar, that I'm like, when?

[11:46] Lena: What place do you think she is in line?

[11:50] Ian: How many people are in line to be like, what?

[11:54] Lena: In Weapons?

[11:55] Ian: In Weapons.

[11:56] Lena: She got an Oscar for Weapons.

[11:58] Ian: Oh, I understand.

[11:59] Ian: Because of this campaign.

[12:01] Lena: You know what I'm fucking thinking of?

[12:02] Lena: Because I was just listening to your last episode, Ian.

[12:06] Lena: I thought you were talking about Suzy Pepper again.

[12:08] Ian: And I said, you guys are so silly bringing Suzy Pepper up again.

[12:11] Lena: And here we are.

[12:15] Ian: We're talking about Amy Madigan.

[12:16] Lena: She won the Oscar.

[12:17] Ian: She was the aunt or the grandma or whatever the hell.

[12:21] Lena: Aunt Gladys.

[12:22] Ian: Thank you.

[12:23] Ian: I just like want, I don't know.

[12:28] Ian: Like, I don't know who's on this list.

[12:30] Ian: Definitive list of, like, deserves an Oscar.

[12:34] Lena: I don't know if Jessalyn Gibson should be on this list.

[12:36] Ian: She should be.

[12:37] Lena: I agree.

[12:39] Ian: She should have gotten an Academy Award for her two-scene role in the movie Prom Night starring Brittany Snow.

[12:47] Lena: Oh, I'm familiar.

[12:49] Ian: I'm not, famously.

[12:51] Lena: I remember I pirated that movie as a child.

[12:53] Ian: The first scene of that movie is genuinely terrifying.

[12:57] Lena: See, I'm still so scared of that movie.

[12:59] Ian: This is, like, the second time this has come up in the last week for Ian and I.

[13:02] Lena: I'm so scared of that movie.

[13:04] Ian: Have you ever watched the original Prom Night with Jamie Lee Curtis?

[13:08] Lena: I have.

[13:09] Ian: This is also the second time that this has come up to me in the last week.

[13:12] Lena: It's the same conversation.

[13:14] Ian: It's amazing.

[13:15] Lena: No, I haven't.

[13:16] Ian: OK, this is what I told Lena in our conversation.

[13:24] Ian: Go check out Slay A Queer Buffy Podcast.

[13:26] Ian: Prom Night is crazy because it's about Jamie Lee Curtis.

[13:30] Ian: She's in high school and she's going to prom.

[13:32] Ian Allred: There's also a moment where it's like random or is it like coping mechanism?

[14:03] Lena Conatser: It's supposed to be coping. It's like, oh, things are so terrible. I got to dance. Oh, the kids, the people who are dying are dying in ways where their bodies are not being found. So it's like, oh, Jason went to the bathroom and he's not back for the back. Oh, OK. So it's just like everyone dancing at prom. But like they stay on everyone dancing at prom for way too long.

[14:30] Ian Allred: And they're doing it's not just like it's not like the director was like, OK, everyone, pretend you're listening to music and dance, and I'll film you for a few seconds. Clearly, they hired a choreographer and created an entire set piece. And I think it's really special. The moment where the cat's out of the bag, that people are getting murdered is that the killer murders, I think the prom king. I don't really remember. And cuts his head off and then throws it onto the stage. With the crown. Like at prom.

[14:57] Lena Conatser: Yes, with the crown on, if I'm not misremembering. I love that. So they're like, oh, I know context who he is. Yeah, they go. I remember who that is. Oh, yeah. You just won. Wait. Oh, my God. And OK, interesting. In my mind, you describing it. They're like, oh, my God, everyone's dying. Oh, my God, this sucks. This sucks. I got to dance out my feelings. I got to dance that. OK, that makes a little more sense.

[15:21] Ian Allred: Jamie Lee kind of throwing it down.

[15:24] Lena Conatser: Oh, yeah, it's her and her date. Like other people are involved, but like it is largely Jamie Lee and her boyfriend. She's a beautiful mover. She's a beautiful, beautiful mover. Shut up, Jamie Lee.

[15:38] Ian Allred: On that note. Do we have anything final to say about prom night?

[15:43] Lena Conatser: No, I think I've got something to say.

[15:46] Ian Allred: OK.

[15:48] Lena Conatser: OK. And I agree with what Ian said. I understand like the I'm disappointed, but like 5% is I get where you're coming from. But to kill only exception is diabolical. And I can't get behind it. And I can't get behind it. I understand what you and hey, I'm not saying I'm not saying you shouldn't not stand by it. But what I'm saying is not the vote I would make, not the vote I would make. Yeah, that was that was diabolical. And I'm still hurt about it. So that's something we know.

[16:21] Ian Allred: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I feel like somewhere only we know is a far more iconic number at large in the fandom.

[16:30] Lena Conatser: Well, I'm only one Gleek. Bark for me, Gleek. Like, and that's my opinion.

[16:34] Ian Allred: Yeah, exactly. I just oh my God, just like it's just so stunning. And I just think it really encapsulates just like Glee. Yeah. Like I just think that's so beautifully shot. Oh my God. I'm just like I. It's everything. She is everything. I feel like every time that I talk about Only Exception, I don't actually have the words to explain.

[16:59] Lena Conatser: Yeah. Like the level of emotion that I feel watching it.

[17:02] Ian Allred: Oh my God. I feel the same. It's large.

[17:04] Lena Conatser: Yeah. Yeah. Also, like as like an emo kid turned theater kid to have a Paramore song on my theater TV show on my was so huge. I was like, oh my God, they did this for me. So I remember feeling like so excited that that song was on. And it's so gorgeous.

[17:24] Ian Allred: Oh my God. And I also to talk about like Rachel's feelings. I feel like she is so bullied and sad. And like, of course, she's like her heart's wide open. And I think that's something good about Rachel. But I also think that like she has this really broken view of herself.

[17:42] Lena Conatser: Yeah. And I think deep down she thought that maybe love wasn't possible for her. And she definitely like tries all the time. But I think she totally fits that song. Just to I'm talking to the Gleeks who are in the room. But that's just my feelings.

[17:55] Ian Allred: So it's so pure.

[17:57] Lena Conatser: Thank you. Yes, exactly. I think. Thank you.

[18:02] Ian Allred: I also I don't think I've ever talked about this before on the podcast, but I in high school, I don't know, Ian or Lena, if you were Omegle gays, like not not dirty Omegle, but like when you were like a young gay that it was like you needed to talk to another gay person. That was like that was the only I don't even know where I found out. Like, hey, you can find gay people there. But you did the gay tag on Omegle. And I found other gay teens that I would be talking to. I was a gay teen at the time. Don't get me twisted. Nothing nefarious is happening.

[18:42] Lena Conatser: Nothing nefarious is happening.

[18:45] Ian Allred: And I remember I found this one guy, Aaron, that we like talked for a few months. And like I remember like we would just like be messaging. And I validated that I wasn't being catfish, all of that. And I remember like he one night said like he was like, oh, like I he had written a Valentine that is featured in the Only Exception music video.

[19:11] Lena Conatser: Oh, my God.

[19:12] Ian Allred: And I remember like feeling like that was my first time that I was like associated to fame.

[19:18] Lena Conatser: Yes. Proximity to fame.

[19:19] Ian Allred: Thank you so much. Yeah. And I was like, oh my God, I went to school the next day and I like told my friends, I was like, I'm talking to this guy. And like he his Valentine is in the music video and everything. And so like there's like layers to how much I love this song.

[19:33] Lena Conatser: Yeah, I totally get that.

[19:34] Ian Allred: Yeah. God.

[19:36] Lena Conatser: So I wasn't much. I wasn't an Omegle gay.

[19:39] Ian Allred: I know I was far too scared to do any video chatting. I was like in someone's room while they were non video chatting. Just like, yeah, even regular chatting for the record.

[19:49] Lena Conatser: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

[19:51] Ian Allred: I remember I was in someone's room while they were doing video chatting. And I I don't even think I saw anything bad. I just like felt like I was going to go to hell by being in the room. So I like I couldn't I couldn't even even like dare to type in the words.

[20:10] Lena Conatser: Yeah, sure. I don't and I don't think that this was like I think parental authority figures were not in the wrong for feeling this way. But the way that like online message boards were talked about when I was a child, I literally was like, I may as well be making a deal with the devil. If I go on an online forum and talk to strangers.

[20:37] Ian Allred: Yeah, like it was just so people were so paranoid, which I understand they're so paranoid about like people grooming you and predators and all that stuff that I was like terrified of chat rooms of any kind.

[20:48] Lena Conatser: Yeah. Oh, God.

[20:51] Ian Allred: Yeah, I could. Oh, it's a whole separate podcast about that entire era of my life. But we're here to talk about the hip hop show Glee here today. We're going to be looking at four songs. What, Lena, what kind of song are you kind of vibing for?

[21:06] Lena Conatser: Um, I, you know, I was going through the the songs that are left and I was pulling analysis and I was going through all the songs and like doing my own quick fire, hearing five seconds of the song going, oh, this one, this one, this one.

[21:26] Ian Allred: Yeah.

[21:29] Lena Conatser: And there are on Spotify. There's the sad Glee songs like GIF that happens. I don't want any of those. I mean, I'll take them, but I would much rather party. Also, like I'm repping my angel Quinn. So I'd love a maybe a cool like a Quinn solo would be amazing.

[21:46] Ian Allred: I feel like every other time you've specifically manifested, I'm not going to teach your boyfriend how to dance with you.

[21:51] Lena Conatser: Oh, well, yeah, yeah. Still in the car. But I feel like I know this and I'm not saying the words because maybe.

[21:58] Ian Allred: Oh, and I just jinxed it. No, and it's OK. It's OK. And now that you've brought it up, let's talk about it. Obviously, I want it. I did. As soon as you asked if I wanted to come on, I immediately checked. I was like, who's done it is like. And I've been I've been keeping up and making sure. And she is still in the cup. And I do want her. I want her very badly. At least before the podcast like ends. God knows that we've got a long road ahead of us. And especially if it gets voted out. Jesus Christ, I need to be around. I need to be around. I really want to hear. I really want to be with you when we kind of really unpack it.

[22:32] Lena Conatser: Yeah. And what are you clamoring for?

[22:36] Ian Allred: I want to have a good time. I agree with Lena. I'm I'm in a like party mood.

[22:41] Lena Conatser: Yeah, my girl wants to party all the time. My girl being me. Yeah, I want to party.

[22:46] Ian Allred: OK, perfect. So we're not being sad. That song's not in the cup, though.

[22:50] Lena Conatser: It's not sad. It's not. I last night, my friend was talking about Temple Grandin randomly and was like, do any of you even know who Temple Grandin is? And I said, I literally know who Temple Grandin is because of Glee. And then I pulled up the clip and I forgot that Holly Holiday dresses up as Temple Grandin.

[23:11] Ian Allred: Oh, my God. Introduce that song.

[23:14] Lena Conatser: Yeah. Hit it.

[23:16] Ian Allred: And it's same. Wait, what's the tie between him and party all the time? How does she connect the two?

[23:21] Lena Conatser: First of all, she her. And second of all, she doesn't really even try. She says, like, I'm Temple Grandin and I was a big advocate for animal rights and I made huge strides in autistic representation. But that doesn't mean I didn't like to party.

[23:41] Ian Allred: Oh, that's a wig off. Everything is everything. That's tailor made for my fucking ass. And you know what? And you like, that's the kind of shit when you're writing shit that it's like you like you're like, I need to be able to connect these two things. How am I going to do it? And then you see something like that and it's so effortlessly like, well, got it. And it's like there's no work to even be had. It's all in the performance. It's perfect.

[24:09] Lena Conatser: Oh, my God. I do have the first song of the evening. It is the final. Our total of the Glocken, oh, damn. So never going back again.

[24:23] Ian Allred: It is never going back again. Here we go.

[24:25] Lena Conatser: Oh my God, I never guess that was awesome.

[24:30] Ian Allred: Not exactly a party song, but I'll allow it. I do really like that number.

[24:33] Lena Conatser: Yeah, a little bit sad coded. I'm going to start off on a very random note, which is do we think Cory Monteith actually plays guitar? Do we think he was playing?

[24:46] Ian Allred: No, because no. Obviously, all the extras, they would bring in people who play guitar and then like Chord Overstreet and Mark Salling, to my knowledge, played guitar on tour and shows. And then I kept trying to look. We would get like close ups on Chord's fingers every once in a while. We'd get close ups on Mark's fingers every once in a while. Cory only close up on his face. I think he's just going boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. Playing the part. I think it's a really good, like kind of like a gimmick. I think it's a great gimmick that it's like, oh, yeah, all of the guys are playing guitar.

[25:27] Lena Conatser: Wait, was Mike Chang in that?

[25:29] Ian Allred: No, no.

[25:31] Lena Conatser: No, why not?

[25:32] Ian Allred: I don't know. Well, he plays the body's guitar, which is dance.

[25:36] Lena Conatser: Right. The body's guitar.

[25:37] Ian Allred: That was gorgeous.

[25:38] Lena Conatser: That was really gorgeous. Thank you.

[25:40] Ian Allred: Do you think the body's guitar is dance, though?

[25:44] Lena Conatser: Of course. What else would it be?

[25:46] Ian Allred: What, your vocal chords? I don't think so. I would love for him to be in this performance and just doing air guitar.

[25:56] Lena Conatser: Yeah, it's like him doing his damn thing.

[25:59] Ian Allred: I love when he does his damn thing.

[26:01] Lena Conatser: I feel underwhelmed by never going back again. I love it. I'm never, I'm never skipping when it comes up. But like, I don't know, when I'm like thinking about like a song in round four and possibly round five, then I'm like, this song is very of the moment. It doesn't shift the needle too much. The fact that it's Artie's last solo deserved. But I would say he certainly has stronger solos.

[26:36] Ian Allred: Yeah, I do like other ones, but I think that this isn't like in the top three or five now. Maybe five.

[26:45] Lena Conatser: What are you saying is number one?

[26:47] Ian Allred: Um, when I think of Artie solos, the ones that come to mind are stronger, are safety dance, are dancing with myself, dancing on my own. No, no, no. The Billy Idol song, Dancing with Myself.

[27:06] Ian Allred: I just like... I don't know, but that's three, so he could be top five, but I would say I would put those three prior to this. I think For Once in My Life is my number one.

[27:13] Lena Conatser: Oh, yeah, that's a good one.

[27:16] Ian Allred: That's a very good one. Also, Isn't She Lovely? I like Isn't She Lovely a lot.

[27:23] Lena Conatser: Huh.

[27:23] Ian Allred: But I do think this is a good performance. I think this is a good song. It's not one that I think of very frequently when I think of Artie. Safety Dance is my top Artie song just because it was such a shock at the moment to be like, wait, wait a minute. He can walk?

[27:38] Lena Conatser: I thought it was Green Screen.

[27:42] Ian Allred: Did you really think it was Green Screen, Lena?

[27:49] Lena Conatser: I think.

[27:50] Ian Allred: Wow. I'm sure that there were children that thought, or people, generally, that thought, no, my eyes are deceiving me. I mean, I was like 13, 14 when those episodes came out. God knows what I was thinking.

[28:02] Lena Conatser: Yeah, exactly. I remember being shocked. And I was like, I wonder, I really, I remember really wondering like what was happening. I remember my mom was mad. My mom was like, upset that she was like, how? And this is like, kind of like, woke of her that like, she was like,

[28:18] Ian Allred: She's ahead of the curve.

[28:19] Lena Conatser: Yeah.

[28:19] Ian Allred: Ahead of the curve, for real, that she was like, how dare they?

[28:22] Lena Conatser: How dare they cast this able-bodied person to play Artie?

[28:25] Ian Allred: And I hear that. I hear that.

[28:27] Lena Conatser: And I hear that. But yeah, Lena, do you have any more thoughts about Never Going Back Again?

[28:34] Lena Conatser: Yeah. I mean, I love this song. I agree. I'm feeling a little underwhelmed by it. And maybe that's just because I was manifesting a blame it on the alcohol rather than Never Going Back Again. But I do love this song. I think it's gorgeous. And I think, especially after the scene that it is, I think it's really beautiful. I really, I like its place in the episode. I remember on Recovering Gleek, we talked about that I didn't think any of these people were actually playing guitar. And especially Corey. But I mean, yeah. But yeah, I love this song. I think it's beautiful.

[29:06] Ian Allred: Yeah. I think Artie as a character is so interesting. And Ian, you and I had a conversation recently about like, how, like, where Artie like, really fits in. That like, Artie feels like, most effective. And you brought this up. Artie feels like, most effective when they put him in the directorial kind of place, where either whether that's like a musical that they're putting together, or it's like, I'm thinking about the movie episode, where like, they're like, all clamoring to be in like, Artie's film or something that they were like, okay, we're each going to do a mashup. And then like, the winner gets to be in Artie's movie, like, it gives him a little bit more agency. Because like, there are certainly episodes that Artie has given shit to do. He's given the Tina treatment for real. But yeah, I like when Artie's utilized that way.

[30:01] Lena Conatser: And I think it's fun. Artie is the character. Obviously, he was written to be a huge nerd. And then they cast Kevin McHale, who is like, kind of just has too suave to do that. So he taught and suave.

[30:07] Ian Allred: Yeah. But to be a character who's introduced in the pilot as like the kid who gets locked in a porta potty. It is fun when we have these episodes where he is in a position of power over the jocks and the cheerleaders.

[30:25] Lena Conatser: Yeah, it is fun. I mean, I don't love when he's the director and he tells them they have to lose their virginity. But like, it's like, yeah, I don't know what you're saying. It's fun when like, he's the director, and he's telling them what to do, or when he is producing something and they're like, begging to be in it. It's just a fun power swap that I think is exciting.

[30:49] Ian Allred: And I feel like I had another thought to that that escaped my brain. So no, I love that. Because I feel like what you're saying, what you were saying about like the pilot that like him being like stuck in the porta potty, that I think that like, if I had to be like in the writer's mind, when they were actually seeing the performance that Kevin was giving, that like, because like when Artie leaves the porta potty, Kevin does like one of these like, sort of thing where he like, like puts the finger on his on his tongue and then does like, like very like, not what you would think Artie to do, but like, certainly something that feels like a little bit more Kevin-y, where it's like a little bit like more fun that like, I feel like that that's like the moment that they like, kind of like realize, okay, let's lock in. That's the character that we're writing for this juxtaposition of like, what we expect from a character in a wheelchair.

[31:44] Ian Allred: And I do think that this is Glee shines its best when it takes these high school archetypes, and then kind of turns them on its head. Yeah, so I think it is fun to take Artie who, in the world of like a heightened high school movie would be bottom of the food chain. A very nerdy kid, who also happens to be in a wheelchair, like stereotypically, he is not going to be popular. And then to have situations like him dating Britney in season two, yeah, I'm going off to college and being like a massive ladies man and seeing all these different women at the at once. Like, I think those moments are fun and flesh out the character and like, turn the stereotype on its head.

[32:37] Lena Conatser: Yeah. And I think that it was like, really smart to bring it back to this performance that it was like, to utilize both Britney and Artie for the extent of this season to put them those two characters together. Obviously, it wasn't going to last. But like, I just thought it was really inventive. And like, just such a good use of these characters that are kind of like, similar in a lot of regards.

[33:07] Ian Allred: Yeah. Yeah, I think about them. And I have like warm feelings towards them. Like, yeah, a Britannia shipper. I feel like I like Artie with Britney a lot. I think they were a nice pair. And I think they did some fun stuff together.

[33:18] Lena Conatser: So, um, go ahead.

[33:26] Ian Allred: Oh, I feel like you're about to kind of say what I was gonna say, which is like, I feel like the vibe is we're already giving a eulogy for this song.

[33:32] Lena Conatser: Well, it depends. A little bit like this.

[33:40] Ian Allred: Yeah. I think it's a shame. I don't disagree. Most of the songs left in this round, I would put through over this. But I think it's a shame. Because Kevin McHale is so talented and is specifically like such an amazing vocalist.

[34:03] Lena Conatser: Yeah, like he is of the men on the show. Like top three easy like he is very, very good. Also about to make a Broadway debut shout out. And I don't disagree that this song probably isn't going to make it to round five. But I do think it's a shame that the card stacked out the way they did and that Kevin McHale will not have like a big feature in round five because I think he has so many great vocal performances on this show.

[34:30] Ian Allred: Yeah, I think that there are some, some group numbers where he's a little bit he's like, almost like the Finn treatment, where it's like, when you think of like, the Finn's best songs, it's like not a solo per se.

[34:39] Lena Conatser: Yeah, like him in a group number. Because I'm thinking blame it on the alcohol immediately. And I keep forgetting that that's not like straight up an artolo. And I think that this like adds to giving the eulogy but like, already, already singing a sad song after a breakup. That like, that doesn't really encapsulate the character, neither. That like, we don't even get to see like Kevin having fun with the performance, either. That it's like, we don't get to like see like, I don't know, like, Dancing with Myself is so special to me that I really, really love it. But I think it's like, it's so sweet. And then like, I love that moment where he goes into the cafeteria and everything slows down. He's looking at Tina. It's so gorgeous. Um, there's layers to that performance where I don't know if there's many layers here.

[35:30] Ian Allred: Yeah, no, this is like, yeah. This is a strong episode and a lot of the numbers in this episode work really well. This number feels a little bit like, what's another track on Rumours? And how could we work it into the episode? Like it feels a little shoehorned in to me.

[35:48] Lena Conatser: I seem to be disagreeing. I think I think I am disagreeing to an extent, because I think that like, I'm really happy. Like, when I think about this episode, and the song list and everything that like, this is this, this is one of the songs that I'm like, I'm really happy that they gave this, this song.

[36:03] Ian Allred: I am too. I love this song.

[36:04] Lena Conatser: Yeah. I think it works really, really well. Because like, he's also like, never going back again. Like what he what he's saying is like, he's like, already had his like, his thoughts about, you know, his discrepancies and like this, like, under underbelly of like, okay, is, is my relationship with Brittany real? And it's like, actually cutting it off. Never going back again. Been down one time been down two times. I'm never doing this shit again. So okay. Anyway.

[36:36] Ian Allred: Okay. Oh, yeah.

[36:40] Lena Conatser: All right. Let's see what it's against.

[36:42] Ian Allred: Okay. Okay. Okay. Let's do something more upbeat, please.

[36:45] Lena Conatser: It is more upbeat. I actually don't know. This is fun, because I don't know off the top of my head. What is the better song? Ah, people, this is their op this round. They're like, this, this song, I can't believe it made it.

[37:02] Ian Allred: Oh, this song specifically?

[37:06] Lena Conatser: Yes. People don't like that. This is here. You see what it is?

[37:12] Ian Allred: Um, is this can't touch this? What is this?

[37:16] Lena Conatser: No. Okay. They're in the library and they're dancing.

[37:20] Ian Allred: Yeah, but everyone's so blurry. I can't make out any faces. Is that Melissa Benoist?

[37:24] Lena Conatser: It is Melissa Benoist. And that's Samuel Larson.

[37:28] Ian Allred: Oh my god, I could not tell.

[37:31] Lena Conatser: Oh, I thought I did not know that was similar.

[37:34] Ian Allred: That was a gust of wind.

[37:35] Lena Conatser: I literally thought it was an extra. I'm not kidding.

[37:41] Ian Allred: Yeah, I have no idea what this is.

[37:44] Lena Conatser: Okay. Because if it's shout, I fucking hate this song.

[37:48] Ian Allred: It is shout out.

[37:53] Lena Conatser: All right. Congratulations, Kevin McHale on getting into round five.

[38:02] Ian Allred: I was overfilled with euphoria watching that.

[38:06] Lena Conatser: I hell yeah. I really, I really have so much fun watching that. Do you not?

[38:13] Ian Allred: It is a no. I have never liked it.

[38:17] Lena Conatser: I think it's super cute. I definitely don't feel that Ian's feeling Oh my god.

[38:22] Ian Allred: Ian, you hate it.

[38:24] Lena Conatser: Why do you hate it?

[38:25] Ian Allred: I hate it because it is the 500th song. If it was a random filler song, just like in the show somewhere, I wouldn't care as much. I wouldn't like it. My main issue with this song is something that Alison Alamode said back like two rounds ago, a long time ago.

[39:43] Lena Conatser: Alison Alamode has personal beef with this. Yes.

[39:46] Ian Allred: And she's correct. It I love the song shout. And this is the most like white bread. Any sort of like soul or spirit has been sucked out of it. It is so like synthesized and boring.

[39:59] Lena Conatser: No, I don't. It is not for me at all.

[40:05] Ian Allred: Also, didn't this beat how to be a heartbreaker? Am I correct?

[40:09] Lena Conatser: How to be a heartbreaker?

[40:11] Ian Allred: Yeah.

[40:11] Lena Conatser: The one Marina representation in Glee.

[40:14] Ian Allred: I don't think so. I don't think so. I don't think so.

[40:17] Lena Conatser: This is my op. I am making it my mission to kill her right here right now. I don't like this girl.

[40:23] Ian Allred: And then I also just like, I appreciate that it's a big group number since it's the 500th. I think that's fun.

[40:29] Lena Conatser: But if it's the 500th, I want something a little, a little better.

[40:33] Ian Allred: I want them to do this.

[40:35] Lena Conatser: Okay, it's the movie episode.

[40:37] Ian Allred: It's a movie episode.

[40:38] Lena Conatser: What song could fill this?

[40:38] Ian Allred: It's just so out of nowhere.

[40:40] Lena Conatser: Okay, but do you think that from a writer's perspective, that like, okay, so they know that the 500th song will be in this episode.

[40:45] Ian Allred: I think that this is the second song in the episode.

[40:49] Lena Conatser: The first song is the Will & Emma.

[40:52] Ian Allred: It's the Dancing on the Ceiling one with Emma, yeah, yeah, yeah.

[40:57] Lena Conatser: Yeah, that like, do you think—

[41:00] Ian Allred: Honestly, a more worthy 500th performance than this one.

[41:03] Lena Conatser: I think so too, actually.

[41:05] Ian Allred: Yeah, but do you think that like, they have to like, write specifically toward these milestone numbers?

[41:14] Lena Conatser: Yes.

[41:14] Ian Allred: This is, I think, this, I think, is my sticking point. Is I would love for the 500th number. Yes, I would love a group number in Ideal World, but I would like it to have some gravity to it. Like, the scientist, if that was the 500th song, if like, Faithfully was the 500th song, if it was like, oh, this feels like a pivotal moment in the show, you could literally edit Shout out of Boys and Girls on Film, and the episode doesn't change.

[41:38] Lena Conatser: It affects nothing.

[41:44] Ian Allred: Yeah. It has no character stakes.

[41:46] Lena Conatser: It affects my mood.

[41:49] Ian Allred: It affects my mood, and I feel better after watching it. It's just such dreadful filler, and I wish that they had done something that felt a little more climactic. And the Dancing on the Ceiling number actually feels like it is rooted in some personal emotional stakes for those characters.

[42:06] Lena Conatser: And also, it's such a technological feat.

[42:08] Ian Allred: Oh, yeah. I would say, is this my like, least favorite song in this entire episode?

[42:14] Lena Conatser: Yeah.

[42:16] Ian Allred: No.

[42:17] Lena Conatser: I thought you were gonna say the show. I was like, no way.

[42:18] Ian Allred: Oh, absolutely not in the show.

[42:20] Lena Conatser: No, no, no, no, no. I think that like, okay, when you consider them, I think, okay, no, the Wemma duet is like, I'm never streaming it.

[42:29] Ian Allred: But it's interesting to watch.

[42:33] Lena Conatser: I'm also never streaming this.

[42:37] Ian Allred: I'm streaming it.

[42:40] Lena Conatser: Okay, how about the boys mashup, the Tom Cruise mashup?

[42:44] Ian Allred: I appreciate, Lena and I talked about this on Recovering Gleek, and it was also brought up, I believe, in an email on this podcast. The boys won that competition because they actually did the assignment.

[42:54] Lena Conatser: They actually did it.

[42:55] Ian Allred: Is it like, the most exciting, amazing thing I've ever seen? No, but at least it's something new. And the Material Girl Diamonds are the boys, our girl's best friend. They did lose because they just ripped off Moulin Rouge.

[43:05] Lena Conatser: But that number eats, that number rocks. I do stream that number a lot. Footloose is also in the episode.

[43:12] Ian Allred: Footloose, I like a little better than this. It's not by much, but I do like it better than this.

[43:16] Lena Conatser: I certainly like Come What May more than this.

[43:21] Ian Allred: Say Anything is in this episode, is that correct?

[43:22] Lena Conatser: Say Anything, In Your Eyes.

[43:24] Ian Allred: In Your Eyes.

[43:25] Lena Conatser: In Your Eyes.

[43:26] Ian Allred: I certainly like In Your Eyes more than I like this.

[43:28] Lena Conatser: So actually, what a beautiful song. I'm obsessed with In Your Eyes. This is also Unchained Melody is this episode?

[43:35] Ian Allred: Unchained Melody.

[43:36] Lena Conatser: I certainly like Unchained Melody more.

[43:37] Ian Allred: You got these. I forgot some of these. This is, I think, definitively the worst song in Boys and Girls on Film.

[43:45] Lena Conatser: Okay. I would rather they had taken this song out and any other number in this episode was the 500.

[43:52] Ian Allred: I definitely don't feel the dread that you are describing, but I understand what you're saying.

[43:59] Lena Conatser: Yeah, I definitely am not feeling absolutely negatively about it, but I do understand. I feel like to make something that has almost no emotional stakes, such a milestone number is kind of a miss.

[44:13] Ian Allred: Yeah.

[44:14] Lena Conatser: Okay. So I was about to be like, I like when they travel in a song.

[44:19] Ian Allred: Yeah.

[44:19] Lena Conatser: But then also they do that and never going back again.

[44:23] Ian Allred: They travel.

[44:24] Lena Conatser: They never going back again.

[44:26] Ian Allred: True. And this song, both songs in the cafeteria.

[44:29] Lena Conatser: Cafeteria.

[44:30] Ian Allred: Yeah. I do. So yeah, go ahead. Say something positive about Shout Challenge.

[44:37] Lena Conatser: I love when they go into...

[44:39] Ian Allred: I like that they are picking up new members in every room that they go to.

[44:44] Lena Conatser: Yeah, that's so fun. Which also Artie is doing with guitarists. So it's also a point for Artie.

[44:50] Ian Allred: And I love when they go into the library and it's unique sugar and I believe Tina at a table and sugar looks up and she throws her book and then gets on the table and starts crawling.

[45:01] Lena Conatser: That's awesome. Yes, that's everything. I love that moment. Damn, these songs are really kind of very similarly put together.

[45:09] Ian Allred: Wait, have I never... I don't think I play before...

[45:13] Lena Conatser: Okay, in Never Going Back Again, is he collecting guitarists?

[45:17] Ian Allred: Yeah.

[45:17] Lena Conatser: Yes, they are increasing as he walks.

[45:18] Ian Allred: It's just Puck behind him at first.

[45:21] Lena Conatser: And then they're like, as he goes through the room, someone like...

[45:24] Ian Allred: He's assembling a team.

[45:25] Lena Conatser: Yes, he's assembling a team.

[45:27] Ian Allred: I'm assembling a team.

[45:29] Lena Conatser: Very special guitarists.

[45:31] Ian Allred: Exactly. And they're doing the same thing in this. That's really, really fascinating. I just think that they're having so much fun in this performance.

[45:44] Lena Conatser: And I really wish that you two could focus on that instead.

[45:49] Ian Allred: I'm focused on that.

[45:51] Lena Conatser: I'm having a good time. There's so many other numbers where they are having fun. And then also the song is good.

[45:58] Ian Allred: Yeah.

[46:02] Lena Conatser: I'm thinking about the one note that I wrote down was Final Destination. Do you see the most recent bloodlines?

[46:09] Ian Allred: No, I've seen the scene where the hotel falls, but that's it.

[46:13] Lena Conatser: That's the one with this song featured. Where they're on the sky needle. And they're jumping in the grass.

[46:19] Ian Allred: Yeah, I did see the preview. And they're on the glass floor.

[46:23] Lena Conatser: Oh my god. Obsessed. Another scary movie I can't bring myself to see.

[46:31] Ian Allred: You can't watch Final Destination?

[46:33] Lena Conatser: It's not for you?

[46:33] Ian Allred: No, because I've got violence OCD. My brain's already like that.

[46:40] Lena Conatser: I'm usually not that good with gore. But I feel like this, with Final Destination, it's kind of funny gore.

[46:48] Ian Allred: Yeah, I'm sure. I like scary movies a lot. Just randomly, Prom Night, Final Destination, the two I can't see.

[46:56] Lena Conatser: You can't.

[46:57] Ian Allred: Hey.

[46:57] Lena Conatser: Well, I mean, I probably could see Prom Night. But Final Destination, I'm not sure.

[47:02] Ian Allred: This song is really scary. This song is from Animal House?

[47:07] Lena Conatser: From Animal House.

[47:08] Ian Allred: Oh yeah, I don't know that one. Anyone ever seen Animal House?

[47:13] Lena Conatser: How was it?

[47:15] Ian Allred: I watched it in 2014. I can't really tell you too much about it. It's just kind of like Monsters University, but live action.

[47:26] Lena Conatser: Well, I've seen Monsters University, so.

[47:27] Ian Allred: Well, then all of us have seen Animal House.

[47:32] Lena Conatser: You got it, yeah. All I know about Animal House is my neighbor, when I was growing up and I was very young, telling me about a scene where a guy goes, I'm a zit, look, and fills his mouth with mashed potatoes and punches his cheeks and spits out the mashed potatoes.

[47:49] Ian Allred: That's all I know.

[47:50] Lena Conatser: Loves it. Which also happens in Monsters University.

[47:53] Ian Allred: Which also happens.

[47:54] Lena Conatser: Oh my God. Favorite part of Monsters University is they leave the mom in the car.

[47:59] Ian Allred: I'll just be listening to my tunes.

[48:00] Lena Conatser: Yes, I love that part. Oh my God. And she puts on like screamo music.

[48:06] Ian Allred: It's so good. No, that's my mother. I love her.

[48:11] Lena Conatser: Wait, can I say my shit about Shout?

[48:14] Ian Allred: Yeah.

[48:15] Lena Conatser: I just really, really, really love it. I think that like, because I was at an event that I was working last week and Shout came on, and the person I was working the event with, I was like, do you like this song? She was like, eh. And I was like, I feel the same way. That like, I don't think that I like the, like how it's kind of like weaponized at like weddings, you know? That like, I think I like this performance. I kind of like would love this at my own wedding.

[48:45] Ian Allred: The Glee version.

[48:46] Lena Conatser: That it's like, the fact that we have two non-gay people playing gay people, Brittany and Blaine, that like, I think that like, that's really beautiful. It's kind of like the gay version of this song. Finally, you know?

[49:05] Ian Allred: You're not with me.

[49:05] Lena Conatser: Yeah.

[49:07] Ian Allred: No, you hate it. I don't understand your perspective, but I love and support you.

[49:13] Lena Conatser: I just, I already know what's going to happen.

[49:15] Ian Allred: All right, I guess we just vote now.

[49:18] Lena Conatser: And I'm going to be out to just vote.

[49:20] Ian Allred: Just vote.

[49:21] Lena Conatser: Well, I'm—

[49:22] Ian Allred: Are you sad about this?

[49:24] Lena Conatser: No, it's not.

[49:25] Ian Allred: No, I think this is canon event. Shout goes.

[49:29] Lena Conatser: Artolo in round five.

[49:31] Ian Allred: That's exciting.

[49:32] Lena Conatser: Artolo in five. You're right, you're right. I should be excited. But like, I just like, when I captured the feeling of like, how I felt after Never Going Back Again, compared to immediately after Shall, so different.

[49:45] Ian Allred: I understand.

[49:46] Lena Conatser: Yeah. You don't know how I'm going to vote.

[49:49] Ian Allred: I have my ideas.

[49:53] Lena Conatser: I definitely enjoy it. I enjoy it a lot. I think I feel a little more middle of the road than I think both of you feel.

[49:59] Ian Allred: Wait, so then Ian is locking in Never Going Back Again.

[50:03] Lena Conatser: I'm locking in Shall.

[50:06] Ian Allred: Lina, what are you doing?

[50:08] Lena Conatser: Well—

[50:08] Ian Allred: I was writing on this.

[50:09] Lena Conatser: I know. And I do, I like both. I think both are really cute. I like a train with gathering people, gathering a team.

[50:21] Ian Allred: A conga line, yeah.

[50:22] Lena Conatser: A conga line, if you will. I love seeing the cafeteria. I think these are both cute. So I'm gonna pick Never Going Back Again.

[50:39] Ian Allred: I definitely did not, like, hate it like Ian did.

[50:42] Lena Conatser: I love when we give a eulogy to a song and it's not even their funeral.

[50:49] Ian Allred: It's just call an ambulance, but not for me.

[50:55] Lena Conatser: Okay, let's see what's next.

[50:57] Ian Allred: I'm not upset.

[50:58] Lena Conatser: I knew.

[50:59] Ian Allred: I hope we party.

[51:00] Lena Conatser: I hope we party. Let's see.

[51:01] Ian Allred: I genuinely, if anyone listening is, like, truly, really, really sad about Shout not making it to round five, I do want you to write in and talk about, like, what this number means to you.

[51:14] Lena Conatser: And I feel like saying that I sound like an asshole, but I genuinely am interested.

[51:19] Ian Allred: I don't think anybody's writing for this song.

[51:22] Lena Conatser: But if you are, I really want to hear from you.

[51:25] Ian Allred: Oh, no, no, no. For Shout. This is fun.

[51:30] Lena Conatser: I got nervous. Um, you want to party?

[51:33] Ian Allred: We're gonna party.

[51:35] Lena Conatser: Yay.

[51:35] Ian Allred: Okay. Is it my girl?

[51:37] Lena Conatser: Here we go. What is it?

[51:40] Ian Allred: My girl?

[51:41] Lena Conatser: It is.

[51:42] Ian Allred: You're looking at your girl.

[51:44] Lena Conatser: You know what this girl is?

[51:46] Ian Allred: It's like a prayer, of course.

[51:48] Lena Conatser: It is like a prayer. Here we go.

[51:53] Ian Allred: Oh, my God. That is how you do a 500th number.

[51:59] Lena Conatser: Come on. Just insert that into girls and boys on film. Seriously, I'm sure it's been featured in some movie at some point.

[52:05] Ian Allred: God, that is so good.

[52:07] Lena Conatser: It's in Deadpool and Wolverine.

[52:09] Ian Allred: There you go. It is.

[52:11] Lena Conatser: From years after the fact. You don't know this reference yet, but your kids will.

[52:14] Ian Allred: But you're gonna love it.

[52:16] Lena Conatser: Your kids are gonna love it. I mean, they didn't know the references they were making in that episode anyway.

[52:21] Ian Allred: They're all movie communities.

[52:22] Lena Conatser: Exactly. Damn Animal House. Who wants to start this course?

[52:27] Ian Allred: Oh, my God. I will. I literally almost sobbed watching that.

[52:31] Lena Conatser: I remember. I feel like exactly where I was at this moment in my life when Glee was coming out. I was so obsessed.

[52:42] Ian Allred: And I remained obsessed until it ended, of course.

[52:45] Lena Conatser: Yeah. But this was so huge. I just remember watching this episode and being like, this is so special.

[52:53] Ian Allred: Every time I watch it, I feel those feelings rush back.

[52:56] Lena Conatser: And it feels so good. It's so beautiful. I think the choreography.

[53:00] Ian Allred: I've talked on Recovering Gleek a lot about my love of the early show choir choreography, Zach Woodley.

[53:10] Lena Conatser: That's the right name, right?

[53:11] Ian Allred: Yes.

[53:11] Lena Conatser: Okay, thank you. Sorry. Zach Woodley, literally my fucking angel. He does such a good job.

[53:15] Ian Allred: I feel like he takes...

[53:19] Lena Conatser: This is such a good example of this. He takes all these people who have very different dancing abilities and does...

[53:26] Ian Allred: I don't know. I feel like they all look pretty good.

[53:30] Lena Conatser: I feel like they all look lovely. And I think it's so cheesy and so silly in this gorgeous way.

[53:37] Ian Allred: Oh my God. I just think it's so beautiful.

[53:39] Lena Conatser: And then when the choir comes out, I love their little interactions with each other.

[53:46] Ian Allred: I'm seeing the group dynamics as this is happening.

[53:50] Lena Conatser: And I just think it's gorgeous. Oh my God. This is everything to me. I love her.

[53:56] Ian Allred: I love... There's a moment, I feel like, where the cast is given an opportunity to just kind of do whatever they want, dancing-wise.

[54:42] Andrew: We are a huge international hit. And none of the excitement has turned into exhaustion yet.

[54:50] Ian Allred: And so I feel, and you know, maybe I'm just being duped, but I feel as though I'm seeing genuine joy and love between this cast on the stage. Like they seem to, no one's grading on each other, no one's over it. Like they are just so excited to be doing this thing that they love and to be doing it together. And there's so many sweet little moments like Kurt singing his solo and then kissing Mercedes on the cheek and then her taking over. And when Rachel and Mercedes are riffing together at the end, they're hugging and smiling and dancing together. It also has, you know, it like features four different characters get like very big vocal features on the song, or maybe three. Is it just three? Jonathan Groff's on the track, but only in the mp3. He's not featured. Which, if I had a note for this number, it would be that because kind of the talking so much about how shout like had no stakes to it. Like the stakes of this number in the episode is Jesse's in the glee club now. And Finn is mad about it. And Rachel feels conflicted because she's excited that her boyfriend's in the glee club. But she can also tell that her ex-boyfriend is mad about it. And like, that's what the drama is. Yeah, I feel like Jesse should have a solo in this number to drive that point home. But whatever, it's not a big deal.

[56:13] Lena Conatser: No, I totally agree with what you're saying. Because I'm also my eyes are being opened to the fact that Kurt and Mercedes have solos in this song. While in the episode, they're like, hey, now that Jesse's in the glee club, we are not going to get shit. So like the fact that they're featured, and I love I can't stress enough how much I love them being featured in this song. But it actually from a storytelling point of view, for them to be included, doesn't really hammer their point home. Do you know what I'm saying?

[56:50] Ian Allred: Yes. Yeah, well, Lena and I have talked about this, that they do a lot of telling and not showing of like, Jesse's really taken over the club, because there's so many moments in the back nine of season one, where Finn is like, Well, Mr. Schuster, you don't really even give me solos anymore, because you give them all to Jesse. And it's like, show me the receipt. Not true.

[57:13] Lena Conatser: Oh, show me the receipts. You're singing in every single episode.

[57:19] Ian Allred: Right? But I'm also what a great point, because like Jesse, what it besides this, which he doesn't even get to sing in the actual episode, that like, does he get anything with New Directions? No, I literally are, are doing himself. Or like, yeah, he's singing with Rachel adrenaline.

[57:38] Lena Conatser: Yeah. I don't think he has a single New Directions group number that he has a solo in even thinking about Run, Joey, run. He's like, Oh, yeah, most part in it. Well, but that's not like a that's not like a Mr. Schuster is doing a class.

[57:50] Ian Allred: Well, no, I agree. But even just like the context of him in the New Directions. He's not getting anything.

[58:02] Lena Conatser: Yeah, right. Yeah, really, really fascinating. Um, because I would have I the main thing that I love about this, this number is the ensemble. Um, yeah. And it's actually not too many people like actually on the track. And I think it could have stood to have an RD feature, maybe dare I say, Tina Quinn or something. Um, I think the part, maybe I have my hateration goggles on. But, um, okay, I'm like, kind of like back and forth with the choir, that the choir to me, the second that the choir gets involved, it becomes a little bit too large scale. You know what I mean? They weren't doing this in the first 13. Yeah, the fact that it's like, now we're back from break, everything needs to be bigger. Yeah, I'm like, yeah, I actually don't believe that they're doing the choir just like, do you know what I'm saying? It's just like a little bit too early for the choir. Like the choir with like, um, what other choir numbers they have later on, like, ain't no way is fine with me, actually. But like, I feel like all the other choir numbers are besides ain't no way are like Mercedes literally at church. And so yeah, well, of course, there's a choir and church choir comes out for stereo hearts. And that's like, I guess like, I don't know. That's later on, of course, this just feels a little bit too early to have the choir show up.

[59:30] Ian Allred: I understand what you're saying. It does not bother me. Because one, I'm like, you literally can't do like a prayer and not have a choir. It is the lyric is let the choir sing like the song is so iconically has a gospel choir at the end. And then also, I buy that this is Mercedes church choir. And she was like, Hey, y'all. Yeah, this is her literal mom is in it. Yeah. She's like, Hey, can you come to like my after school club and like run a song with us? Yeah.

[1:00:00] Lena Conatser: Yeah. And like, I don't know, like, part of me, I'm like, kind of like craving like a little bit of a line there ahead of time where like Mercedes is like, Hey, we could use my my, my choir, my church choir or something. But then like, like heavy handed. And then and then Mr. Schuster looks at the camera and he goes, because we're going to be doing like a prayer and we're gonna be doing like a prayer. So we're gonna need those singers Mercedes. Yeah. I understand what you're saying too in the sense of like, the back half of season one immediately gets the somehow the largest budget ever. And like, it makes almost no sense in the context of the world that we've already established. But I like the choir. I really like the choir.

[1:01:26] Ian Allred: Yeah. The choir be like, I don't I just maybe like the fact that it's adults, like it wouldn't be different if they were like actual children. I don't know the fact that it's the fact that it's adults makes me feel like it's Mercedes church choir.

[1:01:39] Lena Conatser: Yeah, yeah. Okay. Yeah. If it was the choir that she's in. Yeah. If it was kids, I'd be like, doesn't the school have a terrible arts budget? Like what's going on here? Yeah. Aren't isn't the glee club the choir like what's happening? I don't have a solution. I just Yeah. I am with Lena in that. I agree with your sentiment that it's always bothered me that the back nine is suddenly in a larger world. I don't agree about this example. This example makes sense to me.

[1:02:10] Ian Allred: Yeah, okay. Maybe. I mean, I can meet you in the middle in the sense of the set. It's really gorgeous. I'm like the stained glass window that they have the back. Yeah, everything about their whole set is like madness and so gorgeous. And I can meet in the middle and say, I think that's a little too much like that doesn't make sense. And I mean, like they continue to do that like throughout the rest of the show, like they are building set pieces for five minute numbers constantly. But the choir makes sense. And I like that they are wearing the costumes are clearly like very what I was doing in my high school choir where it was like everyone wear this color, bring whatever you have that is this color. Maroon like that. Yeah, exactly. I like what they do in like season one more than what they do in like later seasons. I'm thinking about like cool kids, how they're all wearing the same shirt, just different in different colors. Like, like someone went to Michael's and like picked out those shirts. I like this better. I think it's much cuter to have like what's on them. They get to like show off. Yeah, their personality.

[1:03:38] Lena Conatser: Yeah. Yeah. Oh my God. And Quinn's cute little maternity dress over her pants. So cute. Oh my God. That weirdly reminds me of like, there was a great interview that I listened to with the costume designer of Orange is the New Black that like they were like talking about like how the the costumes on that show, obviously, like everybody needs to wear the same costume to stress the fact that they're all in prison. Yeah. But like, how do you show that like, little like glimpses of personality and like, the way that some people would be like, rolling up their sleeves, or like if they would be able to like kind of like tuck in their shirt or something that was like, Oh, that's so smart. And so communicative to the audience of like, who these characters are beyond that, you know? Yeah. So yeah, I like that this performance for that reason. Um, I also Yeah, one more point, please. The grandness of the musical numbers doesn't bother me a lot, because I feel like it is more us going into the kids perspective of like, this is how they feel on stage. They feel like there's this grandstand glass until we get to theatricality, an episode that I do love a lot. But in theatricality, they canonically are actually in costumes of that caliber, because they're wearing them around school, and there's plot lines about them. And then that's where I'm like, okay, where do they get the cash to make this? Because prior to that, I could always justify it as, well, having done like performance in high school myself, it felt like it was this grand, even though it wasn't. And now all of a sudden, like, Quinn's walking down the hallway in this pink flamingo dress. And that is actually happening in the reality of the world.

[1:04:40] Ian Allred: Are you saying are you suggesting at all that maybe this performance that we just looked at is dream at all? I think it's literally happening. I think there was no stained glass window and that choir was maybe like 10 people. But they felt like they had this huge, incredible choir behind them and that they have this amazing set. Yeah. Okay. Okay. That's us meeting in the middle.

[1:05:02] Lena Conatser: Hey, no, come on. We found it. Um, like a prayer. I'm scared for you.

[1:05:09] Ian Allred: Yeah, I really love this girl.

[1:05:19] Lena Conatser: Me too. Oh, okay. So, oh, this is a fun competition. Oh, fun, fun, fun. Um, it's a season two. It might be something that we were talking about earlier. Blame it on the alcohol. It is blame it on the alcohol.

[1:05:31] Ian Allred: I knew I would get hurt today. I knew it. I've been thinking about this all day. I fucking knew it.

[1:05:37] Lena Conatser: Oh my god. Bye. Like a prayer. Bye. I'm serious. I'm calling it now, but I'm serious. I'm serious. Don't even play it. No, don't play it. I don't need to. I haven't memorized.

[1:05:56] Ian Allred: Oh my god.

[1:05:57] Lena Conatser: Oh my god.

[1:06:02] Ian Allred: I love her. Oh my god. Oh, that was so thrilling. Oh my god. Every oh thrilling. I'm like every party I go to this is coming on. This is in the Glee cast version. I don't even know the other version. I've never met her. This is so oh my god. This song is amazing. I think this song is I think like this is such a gorgeous song. Kevin McHale, you did gorgeous.

[1:06:32] Lena Conatser: It is. I think it's gorgeous. I think it's so beautiful. It is so much fun. Oh my god. I'm literally in my cubicle at work doing my little number shit and I'm like doing the dance. I'm doing the dance to a group of adults. I love this song so much. I think it's so much fun. I love it. The hair of the dog that don't bit yo ass. This is iconic to me. I think this whole episode is so much fun. Oh my god. And I knew I knew it was going to be here today. I love it. Oh my god. I love this song unironically stream all all all the time. I think it's amazing. Gorgeous.

[1:07:06] Ian Allred: Wait to segue from our last conversation into this performance. Do we think those chairs are on stage? Do we think that's actually real?

[1:07:21] Lena Conatser: I think once we hit season two, we now live in a world where it is all real. And it's just that's the world of the show. And it's okay. Yeah. I think it's real. I think it is real.

[1:21:47] Ian Allred: See of all these guest stars. I feel like all of them are one and done's except Anne Hathaway where even if it's a one and done, you know, like too famous. She's fresh off Les Mis, she can't, you know, be multiple episodes. I feel like her presence in the show would have been felt longer because it would be a pivotal episode for Kurt that would lead to development.

[1:25:10] Lena Conatser: I like him giving Susan Boyle a makeover is fun for an episode but it's never, it's not gonna affect anything in the long run.

[1:25:17] Ian Allred: No, but I would love to see kind of like them checking in. I don't know, you're doing hot cafeteria lady. Yeah, the Christmas show, their Bushwick apartment to New York after you gave me a makeover.

[1:25:36] Lena Conatser: I'm living it up. I work at Vogue. I'm Anna Wintour.

[1:25:41] Ian Allred: Oh my god. I think that, no, you're right that the Christmas episodes are such packages to that like there's like very seldom anything that's like kind of like taken out of it. So yeah, you're right. You're right. You're right. I was gonna say something else but I forget what it was. Blame it on the alcohol, any final notes?

[1:26:01] Lena Conatser: We really talked her ass off Anne Hathaway. Oh, what I wanted to say was we're talking about Blame It on the Alcohol. Could we not talk about Anne Hathaway? And I think that's settled on Anne Hathaway. Do you think I need to check the timestamps with when they were talking about Anne Hathaway potentially being on Glee as Kurt's lesbian? But do you think this doesn't make me feel good with the possibility that they were writing her to be a lesbian because of the short hair that she has?

[1:26:31] Ian Allred: Oh my god.

[1:26:32] Lena Conatser: Um, maybe that's what gave Ryan the idea. He saw Les Mis and he went, that's a pretty lesbo haircut.

[1:26:43] Ian Allred: I also think that this is like right before the entire world turned on Anne Hathaway for no reason. And the reason being that she was a woman who got too popular so everyone was like we have to hate her now. And Anne Hathaway in this very specific moment in time was like the cool actress. She was like, she's like your cool quirky older sister. So I think, yes, probably the Fontaine cut didn't hurt.

[1:27:19] Lena Conatser: But I think it was largely that Anne Hathaway had a, like in the public eye, a cool approachable older sister vibe about her.

[1:27:29] Ian Allred: Yeah.

[1:27:31] Lena Conatser: I'm glad that we, I feel like this might be the first recorded conversation about that specific conversation, this topic ever.

[1:27:41] Ian Allred: Let's reach out to Anne's people. I, last thing I'm going to say for real was I was booking for Jinkx Monsoon's podcast a few years ago, and I, on the wish list of Jinkx was like, was among others, Anne Hathaway. I said, Hi, I'm reaching out on behalf of Jinkx Monsoon to see if Anne Hathaway would be interested in coming on the podcast. Have I told you this story before?

[1:28:07] Lena Conatser: No.

[1:28:08] Ian Allred: And they responded, Anne is not interested. And also it's Annie. She goes by Annie. Do not call her Ann.

[1:28:17] Lena Conatser: And I was like, okay, damn, like a no would have sufficed. And also like we don't call her Annie now.

[1:28:24] Ian Allred: Yeah, that's really interesting. Because like I can understand that like she goes by Annie like when people are hanging out with her but like her professional name is Ann and how are you to know what her like, that's so weird.

[1:28:39] Lena Conatser: No, really bizarre. Anyway.

[1:28:41] Ian Allred: That's how she only ever accepts work from people who call her Annie.

[1:28:46] Lena Conatser: Learn from this. Blame it on the alcohol. I'm obsessed. I love the Naya. Oh my god, the models, the freaking bottles, whatever.

[1:28:58] Ian Allred: No Jenna vocal feature on this song, but a lot of Jenna dance feature, like a lot of Jenna close ups. And one, she looks like she's having the time of her life. And two, she is in it like she is a beautiful dancer.

[1:29:16] Lena Conatser: Well, because I think her dance partner in this is Puck, which I always thought was really interesting that they linked those two up together and so Puck gets a lot of the singing. Ergo, Jenna gets focus.

[1:29:28] Ian Allred: She's in the camera.

[1:29:29] Lena Conatser: I love it.

[1:29:30] Ian Allred: Yeah. Um, anything else that we need to say?

[1:29:34] Lena Conatser: I love Sam's moments in this just alone on the couch, bobbing his head, not singing, just like spinning. There's like at least 10 shots of him alone doing that.

[1:29:44] Ian Allred: Oh, and Brittany. Yeah.

[1:29:46] Lena Conatser: And Brittany. And I love it.

[1:29:48] Ian Allred: Foreshadowing.

[1:29:49] Lena Conatser: Foreshadowing.

[1:29:50] Ian Allred: They said, Bram, get ready.

[1:29:52] Lena Conatser: Get ready for this.

[1:29:54] Ian Allred: We're planting seeds right now. We're planting seeds. Did anybody catch Anne Hathaway in this performance? Get ready.

[1:30:00] Lena Conatser: Get ready.

[1:30:03] Ian Allred: Check off Anne Hathaway.

[1:30:05] Lena Conatser: Check off Anne Hathaway.

[1:30:07] Ian Allred: Uh, anything final? Are we ready to vote?

[1:30:11] Lena Conatser: I am.

[1:30:12] Ian Allred: I'm ready to vote.

[1:30:13] Lena Conatser: Okay, please.

[1:30:14] Ian Allred: I'll go first.

[1:30:15] Lena Conatser: Yeah.

[1:30:16] Ian Allred: It's Blame It On The Alcohol. And I love the other song so much. What was it? I can't remember.

[1:30:21] Lena Conatser: Don't do that.

[1:30:23] Ian Allred: No, I'm kidding. I'm kidding.

[1:30:24] Lena Conatser: That's great.

[1:30:25] Ian Allred: I know. I'm joking. You know how much I loved it. I love Like A Prayer. I love it very much.

[1:30:30] Lena Conatser: You guys know how much I loved it, right?

[1:30:31] Ian Allred: You guys know. I said it. I said I loved it. Honestly, if I could trade both of these songs for the other ones, I would do that. But that's not how the Glacket goes down.

[1:30:40] Lena Conatser: Right, right, right, right.

[1:30:41] Ian Allred: Or the Glacket, excuse me.

[1:30:43] Lena Conatser: It's not how the Glacket crumbles. I feel like I'm tempted to do Like A Prayer, so I put Ian in the hot seat. But I don't know if I really mean that. I mean, Ian, you already have your mind made up.

[1:30:54] Ian Allred: He's gonna vote for Like A Prayer.

[1:30:56] Lena Conatser: I have my mind made up, which is like, what do you want to do, Andrew? Vote your conscience.

[1:31:01] Ian Allred: I don't know. I don't know my choice, but you know it, so you do it.

[1:31:06] Lena Conatser: Oh my gosh. And this is the man that you have running your Glacket, people?

[1:31:12] Ian Allred: I don't know.

[1:31:14] Lena Conatser: I can't commit to a choice.

[1:31:16] Ian Allred: I don't know.

[1:31:18] Lena Conatser: Goodness sakes.

[1:31:20] Ian Allred: Of course, I love season one more than all the other seasons. But Blame It On The Alcohol is the better number. I love Blame It On The Alcohol.

[1:31:29] Lena Conatser: I thought she was gonna die. I was scared.

[1:31:31] Ian Allred: It's so good. It's so fun. All the character moments. It's fantastic. I love you, Like A Prayer. I'm sorry, but I'm voting for Blame It On The Alcohol.

[1:31:40] Lena Conatser: I'm genuinely really sorry. It makes me actually sick to do it, but it is unfortunately super easy.

[1:31:46] Ian Allred: Oh my god. No, you're being fake as hell right now. Because a few minutes ago, you were like, what was the song?

[1:31:51] Lena Conatser: I was joking. You ever heard of a joke, Andrew? She just cried.

[1:31:55] Ian Allred: I can't joke. I have no spine.

[1:31:56] Lena Conatser: You have no spine. You can't joke.

[1:32:00] Ian Allred: Andrew, I literally said I almost cried watching it. Fake whatever.

[1:32:06] Lena Conatser: Maybe this is all a joke. Maybe you guys. Maybe I'm gaslighting you now.

[1:32:10] Ian Allred: I don't actually know. Between Like A Prayer and Blame It On The Alcohol, they're so close to me.

[1:32:18] Lena Conatser: But Blame It On The Alcohol has had an interesting run on the Glacket, because it's been voted back twice.

[1:32:27] Ian Allred: Like A Prayer actually has been voted back once, but it was in round one against Paradise By The Dashboard Light. We couldn't have lost it that early.

[1:32:34] Lena Conatser: Yeah, that was unfair to it.

[1:32:40] Ian Allred: Blame It On The Alcohol, I will say, I think I'm leaning towards Blame It On The Alcohol, because I do like the traveling aspect of it.

[1:32:46] Lena Conatser: I love the hallway portion of the song.

[1:32:50] Ian Allred: More songs should travel.

[1:32:53] Lena Conatser: I love already running into the wall. Oh my god. It's so silly.

[1:33:00] Ian Allred: So yeah, I think that's a three for three, Blame It On The Alcohol and Like A Prayer.

[1:33:05] Lena Conatser: Oh my god, a sweep!

[1:33:07] Ian Allred: Yeah, a little sweep. Like A Prayer heads are going to be really mad.

[1:33:11] Lena Conatser: Oh, and I'm sorry. I feel bad.

[1:33:13] Ian Allred: Bad. Oh god, I'm going to regret it tonight. I'm not going to be able to fall asleep.

[1:33:18] Lena Conatser: Never Going Back Again. You are never going back to this round again. You're going to round five.

[1:33:23] Ian Allred: Shout.

[1:33:25] Lena Conatser: There's like a really good one here to be had and I could just, I could taste it.

[1:33:30] Ian Allred: Shout.

[1:33:31] Lena Conatser: Okay, okay. I believe in you.

[1:33:34] Ian Allred: Do you have one? Ready?

[1:33:35] Lena Conatser: No.

[1:33:36] Ian Allred: Shout.

[1:33:37] Lena Conatser: I don't.

[1:33:38] Ian Allred: I'm shouting from the rooftops that you're dead.

[1:33:42] Lena Conatser: Ding dong.

[1:33:44] Ian Allred: That's me.

[1:33:46] Lena Conatser: That's me.

[1:33:48] Ian Allred: Like A Prayer.

[1:33:50] Lena Conatser: Like A Loser.

[1:33:52] Ian Allred: You're going to need that prayer when you're in hell.

[1:33:54] Lena Conatser: Like A Loser.

[1:33:55] Ian Allred: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Both work.

[1:33:58] Lena Conatser: Blame It On The Alcohol.

[1:34:00] Ian Allred: Blame It. Hmm.

[1:34:02] Lena Conatser: Let's pop some bottles in round five.

[1:34:07] Ian Allred: Exactly.

[1:34:09] Lena Conatser: Oh my god, this is really, really fun.

[1:34:11] Ian Allred: I like that you put your customer service voice on for that.

[1:34:13] Lena Conatser: Let's pop some bottles in round five.

[1:34:16] Ian Allred: I've got a really good customer service voice.

[1:34:18] Lena Conatser: You do. You also, Lena, I heard this recently, you're like weird transatlantic starlet voice.

[1:34:23] Ian Allred: Yeah, I've got like a starlight who sells shit on like, on TV voice.

[1:34:27] Lena Conatser: QVC, yeah.

[1:34:28] Ian Allred: On QVC, I can never, I always want to say CPS.

[1:34:31] Lena Conatser: Wait, what, wait, what is it? I want to hear it.

[1:34:34] Ian Allred: Okay.

[1:34:38] Lena Conatser: Let's pop some bottles in round five.

[1:34:42] Ian Allred: He loves it.

[1:34:43] Lena Conatser: Ian loves it.

[1:34:51] Ian Allred: It's this like stilted, like trying to seem like I'm a girl next door approachable, but it's like clearly

[1:34:59] Lena Conatser: No, it's like hi-gay, right?

[1:35:04] Ian Allred: Yes!

[1:35:05] Lena Conatser: Yeah, I could see that.

[1:35:07] Ian Allred: Yeah, it's very like fake facade.

[1:35:09] Lena Conatser: Fake, yes.

[1:35:11] Andrew: Wait, Ian, do you have a number one impression or something that you can pull out right now?

[1:35:17] Ian Allred: Oh my god, what?

[1:35:18] Andrew: Do you have one?

[1:35:19] Ian Allred: An impression?

[1:35:20] Andrew: Do you have one?

[1:35:22] Ian Allred: Yeah.

[1:35:23] Ian Allred: I get very scared when people are like do an impression. It like really panics me.

[1:35:27] Andrew: Oh, then I'm not gonna ask you to do that.

[1:35:29] Lena Conatser: No, ask him anyway.

[1:35:31] Lena Conatser: You have one, I know you have one though.

[1:35:33] Ian Allred: I, the, so what's so embarrassing is like the one that comes to mind is that I used to do very topical, on everyone's tongue right now, Peter Lorre.

[1:35:47] Lena Conatser: Okay, I have no idea who Peter Lorre is. Who the hell?

[1:35:50] Ian Allred: Literally an actor from like the 1930s and 40s.

[1:35:55] Lena Conatser: I'm gonna know exactly who he is.

[1:35:57] Ian Allred: Like fucking Igor in like a former, so the touchstone for most people for Peter Lorre of our generation is in Aladdin when the genie talks about the rules and he goes, I don't bring people back from the dead.

[1:36:10] Lena Conatser: Yeah.

[1:36:11] Ian Allred: That was good, that little, yeah.

[1:36:13] Lena Conatser: Was it? I didn't fully commit because I got embarrassed.

[1:36:16] Ian Allred: No, I liked it. Lena, we liked it.

[1:36:18] Lena Conatser: Do it again.

[1:36:19] Ian Allred: I don't bring people back from the dead. I don't like doing it.

[1:36:22] Ian Allred: I'm not good. I have to turn this off.

[1:36:24] Ian Allred: You can't make me do impressions live, it makes me embarrassed.

[1:36:26] Lena Conatser: I really like it, but if you want this entire thing to be cut, I will.

[1:36:30] Ian Allred: Oh no, keep it. You can keep it. I don't care.

[1:36:32] Lena Conatser: Okay. Okay.

[1:36:33] Ian Allred: I never, I never claimed to be good at doing impressions.

[1:36:37] Ian Allred: I can do like a stupid voice that I made up.

[1:36:40] Ian Allred: But if you want me to like make a voice that already exists, I get very scared.

[1:36:44] Lena Conatser: I feel like you had like a, did you have like a Kermit impression?

[1:36:47] Lena Conatser: You did something for like a self-tape recently.

[1:36:50] Ian Allred: I did Yoda for a self-tape, but I think I lost it.

[1:36:53] Ian Allred: But I have a Mickey Mouse and then I have a decent Kermit.

[1:36:56] Lena Conatser: I feel like I've heard your Yoda before. I really loved it.

[1:36:59] Andrew: Let's hear them all. Let's hear them all.

[1:37:02] Ian Allred: This is over a year ago and I haven't done it since.

[1:37:09] Ian Allred: Luke, not ready, are you?

[1:37:11] Ian Allred: No, it's gone. It's gone. It's gone.

[1:37:14] Lena Conatser: Stop doing this. Stop doing this.

[1:37:16] Lena Conatser: Let it land. Let it land.

[1:37:18] Lena Conatser: You're doing the thing that I do when I go through the songs at the end of the episode.

[1:37:21] Lena Conatser: And I'm like, actually, these are all stupid.

[1:37:23] Ian Allred: No, I'm telling you, heed my advice. Don't do that.

[1:37:26] Andrew: Okay.

[1:37:30] Ian Allred: What does Yoda say?

[1:37:34] Ian Allred: Do or do not. There is no try.

[1:37:36] Ian Allred: Do or do not. There is no try.

[1:37:39] Lena Conatser: That's my best Yoda.

[1:37:41] Andrew: Pretty good. Great.

[1:37:45] Ian Allred: Kermit the Frog here.

[1:37:47] Ian Allred: Why are there so many songs about rainbows?

[1:37:51] Ian Allred: And what's on the other side?

[1:37:56] Lena Conatser: That's very good.

[1:37:58] Lena Conatser: I feel like you sound better than you.

[1:38:00] Lena Conatser: That's very good too.

[1:38:02] Lena Conatser: That is really good.

[1:38:04] Lena Conatser: That's really great.

[1:38:06] Ian Allred: Nasty Rhythm Nation in round five.

[1:38:08] Ian Allred: Hot dog.

[1:38:11] Ian Allred: You heard it here first.

[1:38:13] Ian Allred: Michael Mouse loves Nasty Rhythm Nation.

[1:38:15] Ian Allred: He loves Janet Jackson.

[1:38:19] Ian Allred: He loves miscellaneous unks getting shot up during a Janet Jackson show.

[1:38:23] Lena Conatser: Wait, will you say, but my first name ain't Baby.

[1:38:25] Ian Allred: It's Janet Miss Jackson if you know Steve as Michael.

[1:38:30] Ian Allred: Close the door if you want me to respond.

[1:38:33] Ian Allred: Because privacy is my middle name.

[1:38:36] Ian Allred: My first name is Control.

[1:38:39] Ian Allred: No, my last name is Control.

[1:38:41] Ian Allred: No, my first name ain't Baby.

[1:38:43] Ian Allred: It's Mickey.

[1:38:45] Ian Allred: Mr. Mouse if you're nasty.

[1:38:50] Lena Conatser: That's actually really good.

[1:38:52] Lena Conatser: I loved that.

[1:38:54] Lena Conatser: That was sweet.

[1:38:56] Lena Conatser: Thank you for sharing that.

[1:38:58] Ian Allred: I'm getting emotional.

[1:39:00] Ian Allred: That's the only one that I actually practice.

[1:39:04] Ian Allred: It's the only one I have confidence in.

[1:39:07] Lena Conatser: The Kermit one was also really perfect.

[1:39:09] Lena Conatser: I feel like the guy that they have as Kermit now.

[1:39:13] Lena Conatser: There's something a little uncanny about it.

[1:39:15] Lena Conatser: Your Kermit really captured me.

[1:39:19] Lena Conatser: I was there.

[1:39:21] Ian Allred: You're that Muppet Studio.

[1:39:23] Ian Allred: You cast the wrong frog.

[1:39:25] Ian Allred: No, my first name ain't Baby.

[1:39:29] Ian Allred: It's Kermie.

[1:39:31] Ian Allred: Mr. The Frog if you're nasty.

[1:39:34] Ian Allred: It's the way that you do that little hammock of The Frog.

[1:39:38] Lena Conatser: I love that.

[1:39:40] Ian Allred: Kermit the Frog.

[1:39:42] Andrew: That was awesome.

[1:39:44] Andrew: My only one is Dame Maggie Smith.

[1:39:52] Lena Conatser: Yes, this is good.

[1:39:54] Andrew: I need to look away from you.

[1:39:59] Andrew: R.I.P.

[1:40:01] Andrew: Legend.

[1:40:03] Lena Conatser: Wait.

[1:40:05] Lena Conatser: What is one thing that she says?

[1:40:07] Andrew: Oh, I got it.

[1:40:09] Andrew: Just introducing herself.

[1:40:11] Andrew: Oh, I am Dame Maggie Smith.

[1:40:15] Andrew: Welcome to Hogwarts.

[1:40:17] Lena Conatser: Oh, it's so good.

[1:40:26] Lena Conatser: That was very special.

[1:40:28] Lena Conatser: I thought she was here.

[1:40:30] Lena Conatser: That was really amazing.

[1:40:32] Ian Allred: Thank you so much.

[1:40:34] Ian Allred: I am the actor now.

[1:40:36] Ian Allred: I'm the actor now.

[1:40:38] Ian Allred: I've done this on this podcast before.

[1:40:40] Ian Allred: Now there's plenty of people who do it on TikTok far better than me.

[1:40:44] Ian Allred: I'm known to do a bad Patti LuPone singing songs pretty frequently.

[1:40:49] Lena Conatser: You've done anything goes.

[1:40:51] Ian Allred: I did anything goes on this podcast before.

[1:40:53] Ian Allred: Do my first name ain't baby.

[1:40:55] Ian Allred: I can't do Patti talking is the issue.

[1:40:57] Ian Allred: I can only do Patti singing.

[1:40:59] Andrew: Okay.

[1:41:01] Ian Allred: Privacy.

[1:41:03] Ian Allred: Privacy is my middle name.

[1:41:05] Ian Allred: Now my first name ain't baby.

[1:41:07] Ian Allred: That wasn't Patti talking.

[1:41:09] Ian Allred: I can't do Patti talking.

[1:41:11] Ian Allred: Cut that.

[1:41:13] Ian Allred: Cut the spoken part.

[1:41:15] Lena Conatser: No, don't.

[1:41:17] Lena Conatser: No.

[1:41:19] Lena Conatser: I liked it.

[1:41:21] Ian Allred: Nasty.

[1:41:23] Ian Allred: Nasty boy.

[1:41:25] Ian Allred: Don't mean a thing.

[1:41:27] Ian Allred: Hold up.

[1:41:29] Ian Allred: You're like a jukebox to me.

[1:41:31] Ian Allred: This is so fun.

[1:41:33] Ian Allred: Nasty.

[1:41:35] Ian Allred: Nasty boys.

[1:41:37] Ian Allred: Don't mean a thing.

[1:41:39] Ian Allred: Oh, you're nasty boys.

[1:41:41] Lena Conatser: Your face when you do it.

[1:41:43] Lena Conatser: It's like you're being taken over.

[1:41:45] Ian Allred: I feel you.

[1:41:47] Ian Allred: I feel you.

[1:41:49] Lena Conatser: The audience are like rolling back.

[1:42:03] Lena Conatser: It's like she's ripping herself out of your teeth.

[1:42:05] Lena Conatser: It's violent.

[1:42:07] Lena Conatser: Show them who you are.

[1:42:13] Andrew: Wait.

[1:42:15] Lena Conatser: Lena, we're right back to you.

[1:42:17] Lena Conatser: Who do you have?

[1:42:19] Lena Conatser: You did transatlantic, but do you have an impression?

[1:42:21] Lena Conatser: No.

[1:42:23] Lena Conatser: I believe in you.

[1:42:25] Lena Conatser: I really don't.

[1:42:27] Lena Conatser: I feel like I have characters that I do, but I don't have a person.

[1:42:35] Ian Allred: Can you do us?

[1:42:37] Ian Allred: Can you do impressions of Ian and I?

[1:42:39] Lena Conatser: Yeah, an impression of us right now.

[1:42:41] Lena Conatser: It can be really homophobic.

[1:42:43] Lena Conatser: We prefer if it is.

[1:42:45] Ian Allred: No.

[1:42:47] Lena Conatser: You can say a slur if you want.

[1:42:49] Lena Conatser: You can do it.

[1:42:51] Lena Conatser: It's encouraged.

[1:42:53] Ian Allred: No, I'm not going to do that.

[1:42:55] Ian Allred: I don't even know that I could do that.

[1:42:57] Ian Allred: It's easy.

[1:42:59] Lena Conatser: Wait.

[1:43:01] Lena Conatser: Follow me.

[1:43:03] Lena Conatser: While spelling phonetically, we'll walk you through it.

[1:43:07] Ian Allred: No, I'm not going to do that.

[1:43:09] Andrew: This is Andrew.

[1:43:11] Andrew: Oh, no.

[1:43:13] Ian Allred: Yeah.

[1:43:15] Ian Allred: Back to Glee.

[1:43:25] Andrew: I'm not even recording a podcast.

[1:43:27] Andrew: I'm just out in the wild.

[1:43:29] Ian Allred: Yes, anywhere you go.

[1:43:31] Ian Allred: You're listening, but you're looking away, and then you go,

[1:43:35] Ian Allred: yeah, back to Glee.

[1:43:37] Andrew: Yeah.

[1:43:39] Andrew: Everywhere.

[1:43:41] Andrew: I've seen you in the wild, and you do that.

[1:43:43] Ian Allred: Yeah.

[1:43:45] Ian Allred: Do you have Ian?

[1:43:47] Ian Allred: Yeah.

[1:43:49] Ian Allred: No, I'm just kidding.

[1:43:51] Lena Conatser: Oh, man, that was bad.

[1:43:53] Ian Allred: It was good.

[1:43:55] Ian Allred: Let me do it again.

[1:43:57] Lena Conatser: No, that was in the impression.

[1:44:01] Ian Allred: She duped us out.

[1:44:03] Lena Conatser: Oh, my God.

[1:44:05] Ian Allred: I wonder if I could.

[1:44:07] Ian Allred: I actually don't know.

[1:44:11] Lena Conatser: Is this thrilling to listen to?

[1:44:13] Ian Allred: Oh, my God.

[1:44:15] Ian Allred: Keep all this in.

[1:44:17] Ian Allred: The entire impression corner, every moment of us hesitating.

[1:44:21] Ian Allred: The people deserve to hear it in full effect.

[1:44:23] Lena Conatser: I actually don't know that I could do one.

[1:44:25] Lena Conatser: No.

[1:44:27] Lena Conatser: I'm trying to even think of one thing you've ever said in my whole life.

[1:44:31] Lena Conatser: I have one thing, but it's embarrassing how much I'm borrowing it from Ian now.

[1:44:35] Ian Allred: You already know what it is.

[1:44:39] Lena Conatser: Hey.

[1:44:41] Lena Conatser: Hey.

[1:44:43] Ian Allred: I love that.

[1:44:45] Ian Allred: I think it's such a safe thing to say to somebody to fill the air.

[1:44:47] Ian Allred: Hey, I want you to know there's a lull in the conversation right now.

[1:44:51] Ian Allred: That's okay.

[1:44:53] Ian Allred: Honestly, you can say it for anything.

[1:44:59] Ian Allred: Someone says anything, and you're like, hey.

[1:45:01] Ian Allred: It is like the wild card of,

[1:45:03] Ian Allred: I want you to know that everything you said was received by me.

[1:45:09] Ian Allred: You don't have to have anything specific to respond with.

[1:45:13] Ian Allred: Just go, hey.

[1:45:15] Ian Allred: I think it's so good in so many different scenarios, especially if someone says something.

[1:45:25] Lena Conatser: Yeah.

[1:45:27] Lena Conatser: If someone says something, you can say it.

[1:45:29] Ian Allred: For sure.

[1:45:31] Ian Allred: Girl, what the hell?

[1:45:33] Ian Allred: That's how a conversation works, bitch.

[1:45:35] Ian Allred: Someone says something.

[1:45:37] Ian Allred: You said something, and then you can say that.

[1:45:41] Lena Conatser: If I were to do a Lena impression, it would be saying something, and then halfway through, Bailey going, girl, what the hell?

[1:45:57] Lena Conatser: I just get so lost.

[1:45:59] Lena Conatser: I get really, genuinely lost.

[1:46:01] Ian Allred: It's so funny.

[1:46:03] Ian Allred: Wow.

[1:46:05] Ian Allred: I love this impression corner.

[1:46:07] Ian Allred: Thank you so much for doing that with me.

[1:46:09] Ian Allred: It was in my notes of things to do, and I'm glad that we reached it.

[1:46:15] Andrew: Let's all do impressions.

[1:46:17] Andrew: Yay!

[1:46:19] Andrew: Anybody have a final impression before we wrap it up?

[1:46:23] Ian Allred: I wish I had been sitting on one that was really good.

[1:46:25] Lena Conatser: I know, me too.

[1:46:27] Lena Conatser: I just whipped it out right now, blew everyone's mind.

[1:46:29] Ian Allred: I feel like a good impression if anybody has it.

[1:46:33] Ian Allred: I can do, what, are my boobs too big?

[1:46:37] Lena Conatser: Who is that?

[1:46:39] Ian Allred: That's Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde.

[1:46:41] Lena Conatser: What, are my boobs too big?

[1:46:43] Ian Allred: I don't remember this.

[1:46:45] Lena Conatser: I'm not familiar with it.

[1:46:47] Ian Allred: I'm familiar with the original piece.

[1:46:49] Ian Allred: I'm not familiar with that quote.

[1:46:51] Ian Allred: I'm so sorry.

[1:46:53] Lena Conatser: Yeah, I feel similarly.

[1:46:55] Lena Conatser: I can't remember.

[1:46:57] Ian Allred: See, and it wasn't even that good.

[1:46:59] Ian Allred: The talent is falling on deaf ears.

[1:47:01] Ian Allred: I apologize.

[1:47:03] Ian Allred: This is an us problem.

[1:47:05] Ian Allred: There's a beautiful girl listening to this who's going, oh my god, that was amazing.

[1:47:11] Ian Allred: I feel like the one that's begging to be done at the end of this impression corner is Porky Pig.

[1:47:17] Ian Allred: That's all.

[1:47:21] Ian Allred: That's all, folks.

[1:47:23] Lena Conatser: That was amazing.

[1:47:25] Lena Conatser: That was the best one yet.

[1:47:27] Ian Allred: Why would you even try it?

[1:47:29] Ian Allred: That was fantastic.

[1:47:31] Ian Allred: You're embarrassing yourself.

[1:47:33] Ian Allred: You're embarrassing yourself.

[1:47:35] Ian Allred: That was gorgeous.

[1:47:37] Ian Allred: Every time that we link up, it's iconic.

[1:47:41] Lena Conatser: Wait, I can do Jamie Lee Curtis.

[1:47:43] Ian Allred: Oh, I'm like the Crypt Keeper.

[1:47:47] Lena Conatser: Wait.

[1:47:51] Lena Conatser: I'm just quoting movies now.

[1:47:53] Lena Conatser: That's not how she says it.

[1:47:55] Lena Conatser: I'm bad at it.

[1:47:57] Lena Conatser: I didn't prepare anything.

[1:47:59] Ian Allred: You should have read the email that I sent you with all the

[1:48:03] Ian Allred: we're all going to do impressions two hours in.

[1:48:09] Lena Conatser: Well, I'm a stupid bitch.

[1:48:11] Lena Conatser: Okay, that's an impression that you can do easily.

[1:48:13] Ian Allred: He stabbed your father through a curtain.

[1:48:19] Lena Conatser: She's a stupid bitch.

[1:48:24] Ian Allred: Hamlet. Hamlet. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark, and it's his piss-poor attitude.

[1:48:35] Lena Conatser: By the way, this is the best your hair has ever looked.

[1:48:39] Ian Allred: I can't believe you're gonna get it wet.

[1:48:41] Lena Conatser: I can't believe you're gonna get it wet.

[1:48:43] Ian Allred: Wait, that is Sassy Gay Friend, yeah?

[1:48:45] Lena Conatser: Yes, it's Sassy Gay Friend. It's the best Sassy Gay Friend, which is the Ophelia one.

[1:48:50] Ian Allred: Ophelia, so bad for yourself, step away from the water.

[1:48:54] Lena Conatser: Kill yourself.

[1:48:56] Ian Allred: Kill yourself.

[1:48:58] Lena Conatser: I remember Sassy Gay Friend did ads with Mio after a point.

[1:49:05] Ian Allred: No way.

[1:49:06] Lena Conatser: Do you remember?

[1:49:07] Ian Allred: I remember him doing ads.

[1:49:09] Lena Conatser: I remember really liking Sassy Gay Friend, and then all of a sudden it'd be like, a new Sassy Gay Friend is out, and then it was just in the script for the episode.

[1:49:18] Ian Allred: It's like, now I got Mio, so now I can, whatever.

[1:49:23] Lena Conatser: Yes, I remember this.

[1:49:24] Ian Allred: Yeah, anyway, that's my-

[1:49:26] Lena Conatser: Sellout.

[1:49:27] Ian Allred: Sellout.

[1:49:28] Lena Conatser: This was early YouTube when YouTube didn't have ads, and so they would work the ads into the script of the video, yeah.

[1:49:36] Ian Allred: Wow.

[1:49:38] Lena Conatser: I remember that turning point in YouTube history, especially in the beauty community.

[1:49:41] Ian Allred: It was bad.

[1:49:43] Lena Conatser: Okay, so we're ending the episode. What do you have to say to the Gleeks that have stuck with us after these fateful hours?

[1:49:51] Ian Allred: I have one thing to say, and it's bark for me, Gleek.

[1:49:54] Lena Conatser: And they're all barking.

[1:49:55] Ian Allred: You'll know when this episode comes out because you'll hear the barks.

[1:49:58] Lena Conatser: Oh, and thank God.

[1:50:00] Ian Allred: Everywhere you go, everywhere you go.

[1:50:03] Lena Conatser: Yeah.

[1:50:04] Ian Allred: But Gleeks, we love you.

[1:50:05] Lena Conatser: Oh my god, we talk about you all the time.

[1:50:08] Ian Allred: We do.

[1:50:09] Lena Conatser: We miss you.

[1:50:10] Ian Allred: We miss you.

[1:50:11] Lena Conatser: We miss Glee.

[1:50:12] Ian Allred: We talk about Glee in every single episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, swear to God.

[1:50:15] Lena Conatser: We are making Glee comparisons constantly.

[1:50:19] Ian Allred: They are, they are.

[1:50:19] Lena Conatser: When we talk about Buffy.

[1:50:21] Ian Allred: That's perfect.

[1:50:22] Lena Conatser: It's the same show, different fonts.

[1:50:24] Ian Allred: Do you ever feel like it's too much?

[1:50:25] Lena Conatser: Do you ever-

[1:50:27] Ian Allred: Hell no.

[1:50:28] Lena Conatser: No.

[1:50:28] Ian Allred: Okay, good.

[1:50:29] Lena Conatser: Lean into it.

[1:50:30] Ian Allred: Well, I think most of our audience is Gleeks who are watching Buffy for the first time, so I think it's nice for them.

[1:50:35] Lena Conatser: And then for our audience who are Buffy heads who have never seen Glee, everyone's at least heard of Glee, you know?

[1:50:49] Ian Allred: And we're still mainly talking about Buffy, so I think it's just a fun detour.

[1:50:52] Lena Conatser: It also just feels natural in a conversation with Ian and I that we reference stuff we've already talked about, so it just feels natural.

[1:51:02] Ian Allred: I just love Glee.

[1:51:04] Lena Conatser: She's everywhere.

[1:51:05] Ian Allred: But I love Buffy, and I do love to talk about how Buffy takes what Glee does, and does it kind of better sometimes.

[1:51:13] Lena Conatser: She slays.

[1:51:17] Ian Allred: She slays.

[1:51:19] Lena Conatser: Yeah.

[1:51:20] Ian Allred: So Gleeks, maybe watch Buffy.

[1:51:22] Lena Conatser: You would have fun.

[1:51:22] Ian Allred: You'd love it.

[1:51:23] Lena Conatser: Something to consider.

[1:51:24] Ian Allred: Andrew.

[1:51:25] Lena Conatser: I know.

[1:51:27] Ian Allred: Stop.

[1:51:29] Lena Conatser: Especially, especially because there, I think Buffy is like one of the best television shows ever written.

[1:51:34] Ian Allred: But there are some people that I'm like, it's fantastic. I don't know if it's exactly what you're looking for.

[1:51:42] Lena Conatser: But you, Andrew McGuire, who is a writer, has an interest in and also a skill at writing scripts. Buffy is so well written.

[1:51:52] Ian Allred: It's so beautiful.

[1:51:55] Lena Conatser: The character arcs are very interesting, and it is fun to watch seasons and then think retroactively and see how they were planting seeds in the episodes, and how things were setting other things in motion.

[1:52:07] Ian Allred: And as someone who is interested in storytelling, they literally study it in college classes.

[1:52:15] Lena Conatser: It is so well written.

[1:52:18] Ian Allred: I believe you.

[1:52:19] Lena Conatser: I believe that it's likely a much better written show than Glee.

[1:52:25] Ian Allred: Very low bar.

[1:52:28] Lena Conatser: Glee was not planting seeds.

[1:52:31] Ian Allred: No, Glee was kind of planted by the seed of his pants, which is part of why it's so iconic.

[1:52:34] Lena Conatser: I bring that up all the time.

[1:52:36] Ian Allred: But that's the thing, is I bring that up all the time, because there are so many things that happen in episode two that are coming up in episode 52.

[1:52:45] Lena Conatser: They are remembering things.

[1:52:47] Ian Allred: Their show bible is meticulous and beautiful, and everything. So many things have through lines and come up all the time.

[1:52:58] Lena Conatser: Just to go from Glee, which they drop shit all the time.

[1:53:04] Ian Allred: It felt like every episode they were throwing darts at a board and being like, let's do that!

[1:53:10] Lena Conatser: It's nice to watch.

[1:53:11] Ian Allred: That's so interesting that you're saying that, because I feel like with my other baby girl show, Lost, that I feel like as an adult watching it now, I'm feeling like they're, and this is kind of a spoiler or whatever, but at the end of season two, they just randomly see on the other side of the island a statue of a foot that has four toes.

[1:53:31] Lena Conatser: Girl, girl.

[1:53:34] Ian Allred: That shit drives me crazy.

[1:53:36] Lena Conatser: But they don't get back to it until seasons later.

[1:53:39] Ian Allred: But now as an adult, I'm like, okay, are they just planting seeds that they actually don't know what the payoff is going to be yet? But they're like, hey, when we get bored, we can circle back to that foot statue. Do you know what I mean?

[1:53:54] Lena Conatser: Is Buffy doing a similar thing where it's planting these seeds that they don't know how they're going to pay off?

[1:54:01] Ian Allred: So Buffy, they would have, here's the entire season, and they would plan out the entire season arc. So each individual season is very, very well planned. And then as far as they'll mention something in season two and it gets a payoff in season five, some of that, I think, was them having that plan. I think more of it is they took very good notes. And when they're planning season five, they go, hey, remember how we mentioned this thing in season two? What if we actually...

[1:54:36] Lena Conatser: And whereas in Lost, the thing with Lost is it's a mystery box show. So you're trying to solve the mystery. So every time they give you a thread, you're like, where's this thread leading to? Buffy isn't a mystery. And so Buffy, they will mention stuff, and it doesn't feel like a hanging thread. It just feels like a satisfying thing that someone mentioned. And then three years later, when they call back to that thing that was mentioned and then pay it off, it's not like, I've been waiting for you to call back to that. It's like, oh, I had forgotten about that. I remember, yeah.

[1:55:11] Ian Allred: Yeah, but now in this moment, I do remember that. And this makes so much sense.

[1:55:15] Lena Conatser: Interesting. I could literally talk about this forever.

[1:55:18] Ian Allred: We would have you on the podcast if you wanted to watch.

[1:55:21] Lena Conatser: Literally, if you want to marathon and catch up, get on the pod with us.

[1:55:28] Ian Allred: I literally want you to understand that it's a product of depression and anxiety, not starting a new show.

[1:55:35] Lena Conatser: So that's where I'm coming from. As much as I want to be this ethereal...

[1:55:44] Ian Allred: That's why I like movies so much, because it's not a commitment. Whereas the shows that I do like, that it's like, oh, I really delve deep into it. And so it's so hard for me to pick up. Limited shows are much more...

[1:56:00] Lena Conatser: I hear you.

[1:56:02] Ian Allred: ... alley. But not to say that... There will come a day where I'm like, hey, I'm ready to commit. And Buffy is number one on that list.

[1:56:08] Lena Conatser: Trust.

[1:56:08] Ian Allred: Anytime you're ready, we are ready for you.

[1:56:11] Lena Conatser: We're waiting arms open.

[1:56:13] Ian Allred: Okay.

[1:56:14] Lena Conatser: I love you both. Also, I want to mention this publicly. I've mentioned this to both of you individually, but I'm very obsessed with Jeopardy right now. And you two are the smartest people I know. I want you to... I want you both to sign up for Pop Culture Jeopardy to be a team together. I think we would kill, but then we need...

[1:56:31] Ian Allred: I think they film in New York, too.

[1:56:35] Lena Conatser: We need a person on our team who knows...

[1:56:38] Ian Allred: How well do you know sports, Andrew?

[1:56:40] Andrew McGuire: Nothing.

[1:56:41] Ian Allred: You're living with someone who knows sports.

[1:56:43] Andrew McGuire: I live with someone that knows sports, but...

[1:56:46] Lena Conatser: You could study.

[1:56:47] Ian Allred: Get him on the team.

[1:56:48] Lena Conatser: The three of us will take it by surprise.

[1:56:50] Ian Allred: Exactly.

[1:56:51] Lena Conatser: He would be able to pull for that.

[1:56:54] Ian Allred: How big are the teams?

[1:56:55] Lena Conatser: Three or...

[1:56:57] Ian Allred: It was three and now it's two.

[1:56:58] Lena Conatser: Oh, now it's two.

[1:57:01] Ian Allred: See, my worry is that Andrew and I have a ton of overlap.

[1:57:06] Lena Conatser: A lot of overlap.

[1:57:07] Ian Allred: I hear you.

[1:57:08] Lena Conatser: I mean, I can do it with either of you. If you want to kick the other one out.

[1:57:12] Ian Allred: You got the sports.

[1:57:13] Lena Conatser: I like women's sports. I don't know a lot about men's sports, but I have the capacity to learn about it, I think.

[1:57:20] Ian Allred: Lina knows a shit ton about music.

[1:57:23] Lena Conatser: I do know a lot about music. Way, way, way, way more than I know.

[1:57:25] Ian Allred: And I know a lot about the Housewives.

[1:57:27] Lena Conatser: I know a lot about Maddie P.

[1:57:28] Ian Allred: The Housewives is like such... That is another thing that I'm always so disappointed to share with people that I don't.

[1:57:34] Lena Conatser: Yeah, I hear you.

[1:57:35] Ian Allred: That is a massive blind spot for me. Because people are really into it, of course. And once you get... Like, I was not into the Housewives. And then once you get into it, you're like, oh my god, my world has opened up.

[1:57:48] Lena Conatser: I totally understand that feeling.

[1:57:49] Ian Allred: But it is really... It's really... Those shows are awesome.

[1:57:54] Lena Conatser: But I mean, I'm happy to replace either one of you if you want to go on with me.

[1:57:57] Ian Allred: I'll quit my job.

[1:57:58] Lena Conatser: I remember Alice and Dodge and I applied when it first opened. And like, oh my god. I'm remembering right now that they had questions.

[1:58:07] Ian Allred: Yeah, you had to pass a test.

[1:58:09] Lena Conatser: Yeah.

[1:58:10] Ian Allred: Oh my... It was so fucking hard.

[1:58:12] Lena Conatser: There was crazy questions that they were asking.

[1:58:14] Ian Allred: I wonder if that's still a live questionnaire. Because the question... I remember being like, I actually can't fill out this. I feel so disappointed in myself. Because the questions that they're asking are insane.

[1:58:27] Lena Conatser: Did you fill it out?

[1:58:29] Ian Allred: I've never looked at it ever.

[1:58:31] Lena Conatser: No.

[1:58:33] Ian Allred: I mean, I'm familiar with the Jeopardy universe.

[1:58:36] Lena Conatser: And how difficult it is to even get considered because it is such a hard show. And they want the show to have people answering. And so the caliber of questions they have even to qualify is always pretty hard.

[1:58:52] Ian Allred: And I'm familiar with that.

[1:58:53] Lena Conatser: But I've never applied.

[1:58:56] Ian Allred: I just love trivia.

[1:58:58] Lena Conatser: Yeah, it's fun. And you guys are so smart. And it would be so cute.

[1:59:01] Ian Allred: Hey, the three of us combined. We're the smartest people.

[1:59:05] Lena Conatser: Hey, if they do three, I'm in.

[1:59:07] Ian Allred: Or you're Elias.

[1:59:09] Lena Conatser: Oh, hey.

[1:59:10] Ian Allred: Yeah, we can swap out.

[1:59:11] Lena Conatser: You and Elias wear an extra large sweater with your heads poking out.

[1:59:15] Ian Allred: And you're like, we're one person.

[1:59:15] Lena Conatser: We're two people in a trench coat.

[1:59:17] Ian Allred: Exactly.

[1:59:20] Lena Conatser: We're very tall.

[1:59:22] Ian Allred: We are. Um, okay. Is that the end of the episode? Do we have any other crazy non-Glee related tangents to go on?

[1:59:29] Lena Conatser: Which I really enjoyed. If anyone listening in the New York area is a fan of How I Met Your Mother, I am doing a staged reading of a new How I Met Your Mother musical at the Triad Theater in the Upper West Side on September 25th. You can find tickets online. Literally just Google How I Met Your Musical Triad Theater. I'm playing Marshall Erickson. Shout out. September 25th.

[2:00:00] Ian Allred: I'm putting it in my calendar literally right now.

[2:00:03] Lena Conatser: Heyo. And obviously that relates to Glee because Neil Patrick Harris is the main character and Neil Patrick Harris played Brian Ryan. So there you go.

[2:00:07] Ian Allred: Solve that one.

[2:00:08] Lena Conatser: Because everyone listening was like, but how would I connect it to Glee? Why would I care? I'm not going to go unless you have a Glee connection.

[2:00:12] Ian Allred: I just liked it. This is actually one of the reasons that Glee comes up a lot on our podcast is I always think it's exciting to find a way to connect anything back to Glee.

[2:00:23] Lena Conatser: Oh, it's spooky.

[2:00:24] Ian Allred: So I love like there's a character who has like a four episode arc in Buffy who plays, I maybe have already mentioned this on this podcast, who plays like the guy from MIT who tells Brittany she's a genius. I think maybe you and I talked about this, but I don't know if it's been reported. I just like find those moments really fun. That it's like this actor had bit parts in both TV shows.

[2:00:46] Lena Conatser: Yeah.

[2:00:46] Ian Allred: Also they share a staff writer.

[2:00:50] Lena Conatser: True.

[2:00:51] Ian Allred: Marty Noxon.

[2:00:51] Lena Conatser: Marty Noxon.

[2:00:52] Ian Allred: Who wrote the second most episodes of anyone from Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a staff writer for Glee. She wrote Extraordinary Merry Christmas, if I'm not mistaken.

[2:01:03] Lena Conatser: And Matthew Morrison directed it.

[2:01:05] Ian Allred: She gave it to Matthew and was like, I love it.

[2:01:06] Lena Conatser: Marty and Matthew.

[2:01:08] Ian Allred: Marty and Matthew, Eminem.

[2:01:12] Lena Conatser: Okay. So I think with that, I think we've covered it all. I think we've literally talked about everything.

[2:01:17] Ian Allred: I can't wait to listen back to this episode because I know no edits at all.

[2:01:22] Lena Conatser: No edits.

[2:01:22] Ian Allred: No edits.

[2:01:23] Lena Conatser: Don't take anything out of this episode.

[2:01:26] Ian Allred: I'm going to be grinning ear to ear and it's going to be really great.
