And this is such an encapsulation of just everything that's so special to me about this show. This is episode five of the series, but you already really understand specifically who each character is and how different all of them are. And the things that I have special interest for across fandoms, Glee, Lost, Orange is the New Black, all these things that the commonality is that they're all ensemble shows where a very diverse cast and they're all brought together by a common goal and crux.

[40:56] Andrew: And with this, of course, it's the music. And it's just so heartwarming to see all these different characters, especially so young, too.

[41:08] Sam: Yeah. Oh, my gosh, they're babies.

[41:10] Andrew: It's so special to see. Yeah. Oh, God. I just really, really love. It's such a perfect song. Lena, what do you think?

[41:20] Lena: I love this song. I feel like watching especially those, I remember those first, I couldn't put a number to it, but that first half of season one. I remember, I totally agree, Sam. I remember feeling like, oh, shit, this is the thing I'm going to, I'm going to carry this thing with me forever. And I love this song so much. And I love that they, these are normal people. Obviously, they sing so well, and they're incredibly musically inclined and talented and amazing. But I feel like I could see myself in this group so easily. I love a Zach Woodley simple choreo. I think it's gorgeous. I think he does such a great job at meeting everyone where they're at and making them look really beautiful. And I also just like, this song is so gorgeous.

And I just see how green these people all are to be, like these actors are to be starting the show and green these characters are to be in this thing and finally together doing something they love. I feel like I, you know, I feel such a connection to every one of these characters. And I feel like I could see myself so easily in this group.

[42:44] Lena: And so like, being a teen, I was like, you know, like, that helped me so much, you know, I felt less lonely watching Glee. And I feel like especially in these moments.

[42:53] Andrew: Especially, yeah. And just like being able to like, and obviously, it was like, such a cultural phenomenon that it's like, it's like at the time that it's like, it was so nice that it's like watching this show that spoke to me, having so many people that it's like, yes, this thing is also speaking to me as well. And we can connect. And we can talk about it. And it's like, it's like, almost like these barriers, like have aren't open, like taken down, because it's like, we know, that we kind of like, value this, like, I don't know, this, this, this piece of media is so special, that it's like, we can we can have a dialogue about it. You know, I don't know. It's, it's just really, really wonderful.

This, to me, is that first initial, the Glee Club all together, performing together, and you can feel the pure joy that is absolutely radiating off them. Because I can imagine how many times they had to wheel around in their wheelchairs, and how exhausted they must have been. And the fact they are still giving the performance they gave, and the amount of joy, you can tell how much fun they had just being around each other at that time. And that they just wanted, that's something they wanted to do. Like, yes, it was their job, but they also wanted to be there. They really were engaged in what they were doing.

[1:08:52] Sam: Yeah. And you can see that at the, like, the very end, too, is what I noticed this watch through. That, like, when they reach the end of the number, it's, like, there's a relief. They're, like, proud of each other. It's very sweet that they were, like, all, like, cheering on each other.

[1:09:05] Jack: Yeah, I, this is very, very cute. And also very hard competition for me. But anyway, Lina, what are we thinking in Proud Mary?

[1:09:10] Lina: I love Proud Mary. And I wanted a Mercedes vocal really bad. Here we go. And I, this is one of my favorites. I think it's, I think this number is just wonderful. And also, I love them all being in, like, arty drag.

[1:09:31] Lina: And for the girls, that means ponytails. Like, I think that's so sweet. I never caught that before. They really are doing arty drag. They are. Oh, my, like, the suspender. Oh, my God. You just rock my world. Wow.

[1:09:44] Jack: Yeah, you're welcome. You're welcome. I love, I think they're, I just think this number is so, so wonderful. And, like, I think this episode in general is, I love this episode. And I, I keep saying, like, I remember where I was when I saw this. But I do, like, remember. And I feel, I don't know. I love these kids. And I feel, I feel their love for each other. And, like, to offer support in this way to one of their club members, I think is wonderful. And, like, I don't know, I just, I feel like this number, like, always stuck out to me growing up. And I love, I just think it's really lovely.

[1:10:30] Sam: Yeah, I also, like, remember watching, I remember where I was to watch in this episode. And I'm just like, wheels. I, without looking at a list, wheels might be my favorite episode from season one. I just like, I think it's so, so special. And I remember watching it and like, just thinking, like, Oh, my gosh, like, they're actually like, giving this character already like a full like spotlight. They're like, it's a fully realized character. And they're like having conversations. And, you know, obviously, like, it's not, it's interesting, because we have these two songs against each other, Boogie Shoes and Proud Mary. And, you know, Glee is like famous for kind of like talking about every kind of social issue under the sun or any community, and not always doing it properly. But at least like having the dialogue about it.

[1:11:35] Jack: And so, yeah, I don't know what the my point of that was. But I just thought it was fascinating that these two performance were against each other, because that they're kind of like doing the similar thing. And yeah, anyway.

[1:11:47] Lina: Yeah, it's the fact that they're both like sort of underrepresented, especially at the time when they came out, they were under, they're underrepresented in the media, that actually they hold a special place because, because Glee was giving that representation. Was it the best always? Yeah, no, no, it wasn't. Yeah, but at least there was a character on screens that people could relate to. Yeah, there was maybe disabled people who could relate to Artie and the struggles he goes through. And same with Unique that actually this battle between themselves of that, I think was really important to bring to the main, sort of the mainstream at that time.

[1:12:31] Jack: And like, Bob, who has been on the show before, is a wheelchair user. And he's talked about this episode and like how after this episode aired, that like people like had context for, you know, like, if you didn't have someone in your life that, you know, is in a wheelchair or is trans, and it's like, okay, like now, like, this is my friend, Artie, this is my friend, Unique, I'm connecting with them through the screen. And I have context for some things that, you know, aren't affecting me, but is affecting Artie and Unique. And, and so I think it's so special, you know, of course, they're not doing 100% correct. I mean, that would be, oh my gosh, that would be impossible, of course, but like, you know, they did it, they did it with humour, they did it. And I thought, I thought it was effective. I thought this episode just was so special. Wheels.

[1:13:22] Sam: Yeah, I agree. So was this the first episode that didn't focus on like, the three of like Rachel, Finn and Will? Was this sort of the first episode of focusing on a different character, spotlighting a character in a way?

[1:13:37] Jack: Interesting. Um, let's see. I mean, like, when you look at like, the first few episodes of the series, what do you have before this? You have Pilot, Showmance and Akafellas, was that before or after this?

[1:13:52] Sam: Yeah, so we have Pilot, Showmance, Akafellas, Preggers is a Kurt spotlight.

[1:13:58] Jack: So, oh, yeah, there. Roads Not Taken is like special guest star. Vitamin D, feels like almost like a Terry kind of episode. Throwdown, Mashup and then Wheels. So yeah, it's like it is a kind of different kind of direction than they're used to at this point.

[1:14:29] Jack: Oh, I wanted to say there's a Jenna vocal.
