[0:00] Andrew: We've got a mission to find the best song that's ever been on Glee. There's no removes to it, so don't get mad at me. We've got Andrew and Aman who are on the show of Gleek of the Week, who's the head of the show. Glacket by Glacket. We'll rank everyone. Just see if someone moves closer to spot number one. Gleek of the Week. Gleek, Gleek, Gleek of the Week. It's Gleek, Gleek of the Week. Oh my god. Okay, wait. So before we get into this episode, I need to share. Um, this is also fun information for our Gleeks this week. Uh, so we can talk about this. But I was just, I just got back from vacation, and during that time, I held a poll on Patreon to bring back one of 21 prior eliminated songs from round two, and it was really looking good for one love song.
[1:13] Aman: Don't tell me Dark Horse.
[1:17] Andrew: Dark Horse came through. Blame it on the alcohol. That's fine. Receiving 31% of the votes, whereas Love Song only got 29%. But does that mean that Love Song is gone, gone, or like can it still be voted in?
[1:29] Aman: Love Song is gone, gone.
[1:36] Andrew: I think I'm gonna have to yell at you on the podcast.
[1:39] Aman: Okay.
[1:41] Andrew: Um, I want to share because like this is very fascinating to me, and maybe it will be fascinating to other Gleeks as well. Um, the stats of all of these songs of like how well they did nowadays, Hot Honey Rag, You and I, You and I, Love While We're Young. These are all songs, um, zero percent by the way. Last name, um, Only the Good Die Young, Roar, I'm the Greatest Star, season five, all zero percent. Um, and then everybody else. Um, I Wanna Dance with Somebody got a good six percent. Um, La Isla Bonita coming in with a one percent, Take My Breath Away with two percent, as well as Do You Want to Touch Me? Oh yeah, and Here's to Us. As If We Never Said Goodbye coming through with that three percent. When I Get You Alone, I believe is coming in at um in third place with 13%. Um, Promises Promises coming in at three percent, Tell Him three percent, Fix You one percent, Flashdance two percent, and Roots Before Branches with four percent.
[2:42] Aman: Wowie zowie.
[2:44] Andrew: That does mean that Love Song is completely eliminated. And I am, I know that I'm smiling right now, but on the inside, I'm in pain. Um, I'm about to introduce. Well, here we go. Gleeks of the Week this week, coming back from the dead from round one. Um, Matt and Aman from The Choir Room. How are you doing?
[3:05] Matt: Uh, I was doing well, and then you shared some news with me that uh changed that up real quick. But otherwise, very happy and excited to be back. It has been a minute since we uh did that round episode. And let me tell you, I've been waiting every second since then for round two to start and for us to get this call.
[3:22] Aman: It has been close to three years.
[3:25] Matt: And if I wasn't—
[3:25] Aman: It has been.
[3:28] Matt: And if I wasn't so like prudish, I don't even know if I'm using that word correctly, about like only having one guest on for one episode for round one, y'all would have come back much more frequently during round one.
[3:41] Aman: But I was very specific about letting everybody know.
[3:44] Matt: Which was impressive, like beyond belief. The fact that you were able to get that many people on.
[3:49] Aman: I know there would be like one or two random episodes with no guest and, you know, the audience and whatnot, but yeah, it's still impressive to get that many people.
[3:56] Matt: Listen, I saw and I was committed to it. Um, but I mean, uh, Matt, I believe that you have some thoughts. Do you have, are the thoughts about round one, round two, general, amassing? Amon, do you also have any thoughts that you would like to share about the Glacket as it stands currently?
[4:19] Aman: Yeah, I told Amon that I'd come in with uh with some notes that uh I think some of them will uh kind of give him uh enough to react on because I picked out some songs that disappeared that I know are gonna trigger him a little bit more than uh—
[4:31] Matt: Okay.
[4:31] Aman: Um, not you searching to purposefully hurt me.
[4:34] Matt: Well, look, I was hurt as I uh did my searching. I'm hurt, Andrew, every week. I mean, this is a fun activity. It's a fun podcast. Like it's, it's like painful to listen.
[4:45] Andrew: It's painful to be—
[4:47] Aman: Painful to listen.
[4:47] Andrew: Let's not go there. Um, but there are weeks, and even as of the very last episode that you know, you just wait with bated breath of waiting to see what that third vote's gonna be and if it's gonna go your way. Because if it doesn't, there's never going, there's no going back.
[5:04] Aman: Sometimes, sometimes. Well, if you go to patreon.com slash GleekOfTheWeekPod, you can absolutely vote in these competitions that happen every seven episodes in round two. Um, make your voice heard. I feel like maybe, you know, we saw how this first vote happened for round two. I suggest maybe unionizing with other listeners and making your voice heard, you know. Those two percents could add up in your favor. Anyway, continue speaking.
[5:29] Matt: Well, one thing you mentioned was uh, you know, how can we, you know, keep the Glacket uh, I don't know, fresh, freshened up, whatever terminology you use. Um, we need to give a little bit more of an opportunity to get some songs that have been sent away for good. Just a little chance to squeak in somewhere along the way. Whether it's back in this round, I, I, I don't know.
[5:49] Andrew: What are you suggesting?
[5:52] Matt: I mean, I feel as though seven episodes, that's nine, nine episodes throughout round two. What if all the next 21 songs are not as good as the second best song that was supposed to come back in the first 21, which I think might be the case.
[6:17] Aman: Ooh.
[6:18] Matt: I don't know. I mean, when do I just start like opening the floodgates?
[6:23] Andrew: I just like, I kind of—
[6:23] Matt: This podcast opens the floodgates.
[6:28] Andrew: Exactly. I mean, I, this is my own doing, but I mean, like Love Song does need to have its final day, and I didn't think it would come this soon. Um, but you know, it did need to go at some point.
[6:41] Aman: Okay, okay, I'm on. We both did a uh podcast each uh towards the end of our main run of episodes where we both gave our top 25 songs and we went through them and discussed them after each song. And funny enough, uh, one of the songs that was discussed in the last episode that was discussed as a song that I go to bat for uh within the show, um, was not even on my top 25 list. I was so surprised to look back on that. I, I yeah, I go to bat for uh the song being How to Be a Heartbreaker. I'm on was eliminated in the last episode. Uh and I'm sure you remember how much I went to bat for that.
[7:17] Matt: Wasn't even in my top twenty-five. Love Song is in my top twenty-five, and that's why I'm so upset.
[7:18] Aman: Love Song is in my top three. How do you think I feel?
[7:25] Andrew: Something. I can, I mean, like, how many chances can I give Love Song and be like, hey guys.
[7:33] Aman: I, I am sorry that I do not share both of your um ire for the loss of this song. What's your relationship with Love Song? I'm curious.
[7:43] Andrew: It's a beautiful song. I love the original. I love Sara Bareilles. Uh, she's a great, talented songwriter, singer-songwriter, great. Um, this particular uh cover is great. I don't necessarily find it to be that. Well, let's be honest. I'm a big Gleek, so every Glee song is memorable to me, but I feel like this song never really did anything for me to begin with. I love the harmonies in it. I think what they did with the arrangement of the song was beautiful, and just those three voices together are just magic. But it did feel a little inconsequential, both for the plot line and just for like the artistry plot, I believe. It was Rachel got naked and they came to like cheer her up or tell her not to do that.
And then they sing her Love Song for getting naked. So no plot. Like I don't care about the plot there, but I care about these three beautiful voices coming together and these three beautiful characters coming together that never happened in their time in the New Directions in such a way. And then they come together in season four in a way of like we're just getting these little like treats of oh, we forgot to do this while they were all together, but here, look, Diana's back for one episode. Let's do this for a little treat. And then now it's not even in the Glacket anymore, and it just hurts.
[9:00] Aman: Um, I mean, I think that brings us to what are the parameters of songs that you know should be in round three in future rounds. Like, what are you actually looking for?
[9:12] Andrew: I'll tell you one thing. It's not Rehab.
[9:15] Aman: Oh really?
[9:17] Andrew: Rehab is causing havoc on your Glacket. I don't know if you've realized.
[9:21] Aman: Um, let's uh head into my notes here. Um, here we go in round one. Here's gonna hurt you a little bit. Inform me. In round one, Beat Don't Dream It's Over, and sent Don't Dream It's Over out of the Glacket.
[9:37] Matt: I stand by it.
[9:39] Aman: Apparently, Andrew. Uh, choices.
[9:44] Matt: Round two choices. Rehab returns for its second chance and sends out the door Roots Before Branches.
[9:54] Aman: Choices.
[9:55] Matt: Okay, no, I feel you know, I the Don't Dream It's Over flack is a little bit more warranted. Roots Before Branches, come on.
[10:04] Aman: It didn't even do that well when like in the Patreon poll I just said.
[10:04] Andrew: Do you know what, Andrew? I cry. You know what? I will give you because I think of, I think we've talked about these songs multiple times in The Choir Room, and I'm pretty sure every time Roots Before Branches comes up, I was always like, you know what? Upon watching the season for the first time, I didn't really feel it like that. Like, I don't know, like I think it was also the reason like part of the reason was that I knew that she was originally supposed to be singing Beyoncé, I Was Here, so I always was kind of like biased towards why did they cut that and they went for this.
[10:38] Matt: Wait, but then upon—
[10:40] Aman: Yeah.
[10:40] Matt: I have a legal note that contradicts the I Was Here.
[10:45] Aman: What?
[10:45] Matt: I remember reading, and I feel like I tried to confirm this and give validity with talking with Adam Anders, but he didn't have any recollection of this. But um, it was Mary the Knight that she was supposed to be singing on the way. And then Adam, and then Adam Anders was like, Hi, I have this song, Ryan. Do you want to use it? And he was like, Oh yeah, let's do that. And but she has a whole—
[11:00] Aman: So where does—
[11:07] Matt: —so where does what? There's a whole demo out there of the I Was Here song.
[11:13] Aman: I don't know if I Was Here was supposed to—like I completely hear what you're saying about like that would have been more apt than Mary the Knight.
[11:21] Matt: Right, right.
[11:21] Aman: As she's crying, there were some random songs on the graduation album that I think never had any context to begin with. I mean, and maybe I Was Here is one of them.
[11:21] Matt: Okay, Time of Our Lives was on the graduation album.
[11:36] Aman: Right, right.
[11:37] Matt: That's a good one. Well, I mean, look, I Roots Before Branches, I didn't, I definitely was not giving it a shot upon like my first couple of watches of Glee. But after re-exploring the series and everything with The Choir Room, that song really did something for me. So I'm gonna take that emotional overwrought Rachel Berry performance and Glee season three finale performance piece over the rehab sung in unison. There's nobody, there's no characters in Rehab, it's just ensemble.
[12:09] Andrew: What do you love so much about it?
[12:10] Aman: Okay, I like Rehab, and I will say it again in round three.
[12:15] Andrew: Oh boy, and I think the reason that I really like it is like it's almost like a, it's like a soulless entity that is so perfect, and what a great um villain or obstacle is provided in the pilot episode.
[12:31] Aman: I get that.
[12:31] Andrew: It does, it does remind you of just Glee season one. Just it really has that, you know, 2009 energy. So I do appreciate it for that regard. Like every time you hear that song, you're like, oh, it's Glee time. Also, just like Rehab is a general song. Like Amy Winehouse, like that is a better song than Roots Before Branches.
[12:53] Aman: Yes, Amy Winehouse is a good one. It's not in the top like three Amy Winehouse covers on Glee, but yeah.
[12:58] Andrew: Okay, wait. Name them.
[13:02] Aman: I was saying I can only think of two right now.
[13:04] Andrew: Back to Black, Rehab.
[13:06] Aman: Is it only three?
[13:07] Andrew: I mean, and then we have like a really popular cover that she released in like a post-mortem album of Our Day Will Come.
[13:07] Aman: Valerie, which is originally by The Zutons, if you want to cover that.
[13:13] Matt: Wait, what was the other one?
[13:13] Aman: Valerie, uh, Back to Black, and what else?
[13:16] Matt: Uh, Valerie.
[13:18] Aman: What did you say?
[13:19] Matt: Valerie, Back to Black, and Rehab, is that it?
[13:21] Aman: And I mean, like, she has like...
[13:29] Aman: I don't know if you would consider that.
[13:31] Andrew: I think it is like specifically sung by Santana. Because of that fact. That's my headcanon though.
[13:39] Aman: Yeah.
[13:40] Andrew: Yeah. No, I think the way that it's produced, it's very much similar to Amy's version. So yeah, I would say so.
[13:46] Aman: Yeah.
[13:47] Andrew: Uh, do you want to get into some more of the ways that you heard me in round one?
[13:51] Aman: Um, please.
[13:53] Andrew: This is my favorite thing to do.
[13:54] Aman: Oh, I mean, look, as Glee guests, uh, this is our right in life. This is our Gleeks of the Week. This is what we got in life to come like air these grievances.
[14:05] Andrew: Um, I don't have to spend too much time on all of them, but just some of them that I'm sad to lose. Um, I'm a big Pumping Blood girly. I love uh that one. It lost to Natural Woman, which is fair enough.
[14:15] Aman: As it should.
[14:16] Andrew: Fair enough. Okay, the number one on my board that I'm sad to have lost, and pretty much heavily disagree with the uh decision there is uh Breakaway.
[14:28] Aman: Oh, yeah, people do say this a lot, and you know, I feel bad about it, and I'm sorry, Breakaway has not had the same relationship that it had with me as with other Gleeks. And Call Me Maybe just, I don't know. She's, she, Call Me Maybe, she's cute, it's fun. The four of them, adorable. Yes.
[14:46] Aman: But "Breakaway" is like, oh, and then when they rip up the picture, I think it just comes so late in the series that you just lose— you've already lost a lot of people, and I because I like it too.
[14:58] Andrew: Every time I watch the episode, I'm like, oh yeah, they did do this song, and they did a pretty good job at it. And I was actually listening to Kevin McHale in not I was about to say Tina Cohen Chang, not good Jenna Ushkowitz in this podcast, and they talked about how much fun they had shooting that number. And I was like, you know what? That is a really, really solid number. It does not get enough love. So I hear you, Matt, but like I just think that you've already I think like a lot of the audience is already gone at that point, so it just kind of falls through the cracks, unfortunately. But you know what? I will say, Matt, and maybe you'll disagree with me, and maybe you will as well, Aman, that I feel as though like the next episode serving the same purpose as "Breakaway," hold on, really does a lot for me. Just as good.
[15:40] Matt: Oh, okay, okay, great. I'm with you. That's a song that's probably in like the top five songs of just not the Glee version, obviously, but that will come on just out in the world, like a grocery store at a restaurant. That I'm like, why is this playing? And you know, you try to resist the urge. They did this on Glee. But it's hard not to, yeah, no, but I'm a big fan. I do it every time. No shame when I fail. Um, ready? Next one. Aman, what if I told you that a song from "The Breakup" lost one of the songs from "The Breakup"? I'm not gonna tell you yet which one in round one, lost to, and I think you're a big fan of the song that it lost to, but still, it lost to "Wishing and Hoping."
[16:27] Aman: Oh, see, like, see, my heart, I automatically can hear Heather Morris's voice automatically, and I'm like, oh. But then I'm like, but the song it lost to, and you would think, oh, maybe it lost to "Barely Breathing." No, that's what I was no, it didn't even lose to "Barely Breathing." The six out of six song in that episode. It lost to "Give Your Heart a Break."
[16:52] Andrew: Wait, wait, wait, wait. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Wait, what are you— You're saying I think you're saying it backwards.
[16:59] Aman: Because "Give Your Heart a Break" lost to "Wishing and Hoping."
[17:05] Andrew: That is correct.
[17:06] Aman: No, no, no, no, no. No, no, no, no. Historically correct.
[17:09] Andrew: Oh, shut it down. Shut it down.
[17:11] Aman: No, leave it open.
[17:12] Andrew: It happens. This is a farce. Why did I come on this? I'm leaving.
[17:16] Aman: Well, because Heather Morris is a beautiful singer, especially in that song. Heather Morris's voice, but over that vocal masterpiece of "Give Your Heart a Break." Come on. Sometimes you catch me in decisions that I'm like, can't stand by that one. This one I stand by.
[17:34] Andrew: Why? "Give Your Heart a Break."
[17:37] Aman: Yeah.
[17:37] Andrew: They sound so beautiful.
[17:40] Aman: But you know what? I just love "Wishing and Hoping." I just think it's so cute. And I like that piece. I love "Wishing and Hoping." I am the "Wishing and Hoping" champion. Champion, okay? But I'ma not be wishing and hoping. No. No. They changed the pronouns, Aman. Does that mean anything to you?
[17:57] Aman: Like when I think of songs, there's a lot of songs that have been going through the rounds that I'm like, that's not gonna win, but I'm happy it's still in. Or I can't believe it's still in. Like, "Give Your Heart a Break." If that ended up in a final round, I would pick it to win. "Wishing and Hoping" is another one of those songs that is like right at the top of Kevin McHale's break too. Like, because he is screaming in that bridge.
[18:19] Andrew: What I will say against "Wishing and Hoping" is that it should have been um what is like the official ship name between Brittany and Artie?
[18:28] Aman: Barty.
[18:29] Andrew: Um, I think it should have been a Barty duet. I think that Blaine and Sam had no goddamn purpose in that song. They wanted anybody that was available to be unless your name was Naira Vera Heather Morris, no, not Heather Morris. I don't even know. They had their Heather people that were there.
[18:50] Aman: Right. Maybe that was a bad example because that was the episode that they got engaged, right?
[18:55] Andrew: That was the yep, exactly. I don't know. I just I like Brittany's hair in season six, so I think that that's kind of swaying me.
[19:02] Aman: She's a little bit hair in season six. I love a good season six song. Like I a lot of people sleep on season six, but I don't know about the season. She disappears in season four and comes back truly 17 years older by the time we see her again in season five and six.
[19:17] Andrew: Yeah.
[19:17] Aman: But that's a good one.
[19:18] Andrew: That's what MIT will do to you.
[19:19] Aman: Exactly.
[19:20] Andrew: Yeah. Alright. What's next?
[19:22] Aman: Um, I am not upset about this decision. I'm just sad to lose "Some Nights." It went bye-bye after "Home" from season six beat it.
[19:31] Andrew: That's a tough matchup.
[19:33] Aman: Yeah, but "Some Nights" is one of my girlies. Um I think we're all in the same boat of um, you know, trying to not be too critical of Kurt songs, but sometimes it happens. My favorite Kurt solo is "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," and it didn't make its way out of the first round.
[19:49] Andrew: Well, do you want to share what it was against? I feel like the context is really important here.
[19:52] Aman: It was against "I'll Stand By You."
[19:57] Andrew: Um which is Finn version.
[20:00] Aman: Yeah, the season one is Finn. Um but Finn has been. So what tugs at the heartstrings more? Finn singing a song to a baby that's not his or singing to his father with ailing in the hospital? Like where do you lie?
[20:15] Andrew: Andrew's making a face for the audio only.
[20:18] Aman: Audio, yeah, audio only, yeah. That is not actually being translated. Um I uh I don't know. That was like that was like a very hard matchup, and I think really depending on the day, I could see myself voting very similar sentiments, yeah.
[20:33] Andrew: Yeah, so it was like unfortunate that they were against each other because I feel as though they rightfully have spots in round two and future rounds, but that was just too early on.
[20:43] Aman: Yeah. Um okay, "Umbrella" singing in the rain, sad to lose it. Um, but it loses to it, uh "Don't You Know?" That's gone now.
[20:49] Andrew: Oh my god, I need to go back and listen to all these damn episodes.
[20:54] Aman: Oh, they didn't tell you.
[20:56] Andrew: Oh my god.
[20:57] Aman: Um not like, you know, I'm I can't fault anybody. That's fine. I like it. Um, so I'm just shouting it out here. I know it's listening. Um she's listening. On our way is listening. I sent you a specific message after the "Against All Odds," "Take a Look at Me Now" versus "The Fox," because I said, look, I understand. It's just um "The Fox" because I'm on beat.
[21:09] Andrew: Take a look at the box.
[21:21] Aman: Wait, "The Fox" beat oh, I know your bath is burning.
[21:26] Andrew: No, no, no. I you know from our episode recap of that that I was not down on "The Fox."
[21:35] Aman: No, you weren't. You weren't, but you certainly would never even be close to being down on Blaine's dog, though. But if there was ever anyone that would understand "The Fox" going through, I felt it was me. So there's that.
[21:46] Andrew: Wait, so wait, how do you you're okay with that decision, "The Fox" going through? Or where do you stand?
[21:51] Aman: I couldn't like whatever "The Fox" was gonna be up against, it probably could have been up against like uh "Somewhere Only We Know," and I would have been like, I get it if "The Fox" went through because I stood up for "The Fox." I just like I I think it didn't help that like that was obviously such an iconic episode with Mike Olivier that he really like swayed us on it.
[22:13] Andrew: Yeah.
[22:13] Aman: In a way that like I feel like I was already kind of swayed because I really do like "The Fox." Like I think it's stupid, and I do think that there are certain cast members that absolutely sound beautiful on it for no reason.
[22:25] Andrew: For no damn reason.
[22:26] Aman: Um yeah. And whereas like "Against All Odds," I understand the people uh some people's relationship with that song. I just do not share that sentiment, and that is just kind of how this entire process is kind of going through. I mentioned, by the way, you have great guests. Some really great guests along the way. It's been a lot of people.
[22:47] Andrew: Oh, thank you. They ought to Glee folks up on there too. I'm like, oh my god, we in the big leagues now. I wasn't part of that podcast at one point. Surround myself it with good Glumpies. Roderick and Spencer reunion was crazy. That was very cute. And there are um future reunions. Um because I loved that uh that format.
[23:08] Aman: Yeah.
[23:09] Andrew: And testing that out, and so there are future reunions in the books that was right now. So we'll be here for three hours, like you don't want to be if I don't keep going.
[23:19] Aman: Um "Alfie" is gone. What lost it lost to "Seasons of Love." I'm sad too, okay.
[23:25] Andrew: Yeah, I know. Um look, that's and again, that's the beauty of this podcast. To give you even more praise, is that it's just sometimes you get you can't control it. You can't control the cup. Whatever comes out, comes out. And you know, you're working your way towards the one best song. It is what it is.
[23:41] Aman: Um, I'm a lucky guy. I'm not lucky, well, maybe lucky, but I like lucky, it's gone. Um, I like "Dream On," it's gone. It's like the one will like number that. "Dream On" was stupid. That that that is not I'm saying that I wish "Dream On" made it. Okay, like I am very upset that it lost to "Barak Peray" that was against my wishes.
[24:03] Andrew: Like, yes, Neil Patrick Harris. I don't think right now of any songs right now that I just need to know the status of right now because I'm afraid to tell you check in on your favorite songs.
[24:14] Aman: Okay, here's one in reverse. I'm not sad about the song that we lost, but I'm sad about the song that went through. This is actually two different circumstances. One, last Friday night entering round two of this damn bracket, Glacket. Sorry. Glacket. I'm correct. Sorry, I'm sorry. I really apologize.
[24:30] Andrew: Last Friday night coming through to the second round. Wrong.
[24:37] Aman: Um wait, well, but that was against like I think that I want to know what love is.
[24:43] Andrew: Which is a beautiful Mercedes solo.
[24:46] Aman: Yeah, I would have gone with Mercedes over that. I don't know. Just uh put out the notes up apology when you get a second.
[24:51] Andrew: Right, right, right. Yeah. Finally. And uh "Sway," Will Schuster singing "Sway" going past Aman, listen to this one. "Sway."
[25:00] Aman: Against who?
[25:01] Andrew: My life would suck without you.
[25:03] Aman: Okay, Aman, before you log out. Please know. Please know if you listen back to the tapes, they are readily available wherever you get your podcasts. That I was the person that was like, I can't believe this is happening right now. Please know that.
[25:19] Andrew: There was a lot of a wacky day on the Glacket.
[25:23] Aman: Oh, absolutely. Every episode is explicit. A lot of fuckery going on in the podcast right now. A lot of gluckery. We have I like "Girls on Film." I'm sad it's gone. It lost to "Jar of Hearts" though, which is understandable. It's okay, yeah. It's the best Sam solo though, so it just needs a moment.
[25:41] Andrew: And "Edge of Glory" going out in round one. It didn't come back, right?
[25:43] Aman: Uh is no "Edge of Glory" is officially gone.
[25:46] Andrew: Yes.
[25:47] Aman: The song it went up against is "Light Up the World," and I Light Up the World with "Light Up the World." So people were mad about that one. Because it's "Edge of Glory." I mean, Trouble Tones numbers are not to be messed with.
[25:47] Andrew: Sure.
[25:47] Aman: "Light Up the World" songs made it through. They all made it through.
[26:03] Andrew: Matt, you are a glistorian. I'm feeling so like I'm like, I gotta catch up.
[26:10] Aman: Oh my god. Well, now officially "Roar" is done.
[26:14] Andrew: "Roar" ha was voted out.
[26:16] Aman: That's the first Heather Morris on.
[26:18] Andrew: That's fine.
[26:18] Aman: Yeah.
[26:19] Andrew: Yeah. That's okay. I'll take it. But "Applause" is seeing light of day in round five.
[26:23] Aman: I don't remember what it was up against.
[26:24] Andrew: I mean "Applause" was against "Promises, Promises" in round two.
[26:28] Aman: Um yeah, that's a weird decision.
[26:29] Andrew: Oh no, no, no, no, no. No, it's not. If "Promises, Promises" went through, that would have been strange for me.
[26:34] Aman: Yeah.
[26:35] Andrew: Yeah. Alright. That was my round two, round one grievances. And I narrowed it down to 15. It was at like 30. Um, okay. Round two. Um, we have "Love Song."
[26:46] Aman: But look, I mean, I know. If I were a boy, I know, I get it. I I I know, and I'm with you. But "Love Song."
[26:54] Andrew: So that's tough.
[26:55] Aman: "Roots Before Branches."
[26:58] Andrew: Yes.
[26:58] Aman: "Fix You," I was sad to lose. I thought that we were gonna get that one in.
[27:02] Andrew: Um what was that up against?
[27:04] Aman: "Fix You."
[27:05] Andrew: "ABC."
[27:06] Aman: Oof. There's a lot of tears going on in "Fix You." "ABC" is just like, haha, we don't have Rachel.
[27:13] Andrew: Oh, but I love but you know I love that moment in "ABC" when it slows down for a second, and Mike Chang sees his dad, and Tina's like, what you looking at and looks at the dad and it's like, oh, keep going. I just I love that. I love that moment, so I'll give it to that.
[27:28] Aman: That's fine.
[27:29] Andrew: Yeah, that was a hard that is that continues to be a one I grapple with.
[27:33] Aman: Yeah.
[27:33] Andrew: Okay. And my last one, and then we're done here, is uh just to continue off of the last episode, I believe, if that was the last episode before. No, second last episode in terms of the last episode I've listened to, uh, but not the last episode that people have listened to.
[27:48] Aman: Okay, okay.
[27:48] Andrew: "How to Be a Heartbreaker" was eliminated uh specifically because of Andrew's vote.
[27:54] Aman: Um lost to "Shout."
[27:57] Andrew: Well, Andrew's backstage right now. Do you have anything that you would like to say to him?
[28:01] Aman: I would like to say how dare you. I would like to say thank you to Alison, who was doing everything she could.
[28:06] Andrew: And to defend it.
[28:08] Aman: And it'll be an advantage.
[28:09] Andrew: Yeah.
[28:11] Aman: Yeah, and great, fun. There's so many fun, great new directions numbers. Come on. Look, there's just something about the Rachel Berry, Brody, whatever the hell, dynamic that it's too good. It's too bad.
[28:27] Andrew: The gigolo dynamic.
[28:29] Aman: Yeah. And and now it's something again. What? So "Give Your Heart a Break."
[28:33] Andrew: Wait.
[28:34] Aman: Yeah, that's Brody. "Give Your Heart a Break" and "How to Be a Heartbreaker." I see a through line here. This Glacket is brotophobic.
[28:42] Andrew: Oh.
[28:43] Aman: I think that's a front runner for title of that, but I don't know if people would know what brotophobic means if they're a list, like if they see that.
[28:50] Andrew: Um, I feel as though, and we said this in the last episode that um "Shout" and "How to Be a Heartbreaker" kind of just like at the same level playing field, and they're not going to last in round three, neither.
[29:06] Aman: Neither would, right? Can we all just be adults here? I think "Shout" was such an interesting choice for the uh what was it, the 500th song?
[29:13] Andrew: Yeah.
[29:14] Aman: Like I think that was just like it was like why that one. I think that the only reason that it does have like the fan favorite that it does is because it's the producers being like, it's the 500th number, but it's like sure.
[29:26] Andrew: And they're shouting that in shouting it so it, you know, I'm I'm surprised that it even made it this far, to be honest. Like, I feel like that would have been I love that song. I love it. I just, you know, if it had to go.
[29:38] Aman: I'm testing your Glacket knowledge now, and it's okay if you don't know the answer. What was do you recall what "Shout" was against in round one?
[29:46] Andrew: What it won against. Sh this was like a very contested vote in round one, I remember. Because I always think it's really interesting whenever I do the polls, and it's like simply like 50-50, and it's just like a few like votes here and there. It and this was one of them. It was shout versus turning tables. That is tough. Um I'm I was surprised. Uh yeah. I remember just reading over it as I was taking some notes here. Um surprised to see Turning Tables did not make it to round two. Um it's a great cover, um, but it doesn't have like the fanfare behind it that you know, the fan support.
[30:22] Matt: Sure.
[30:22] Andrew: And I think it's to me because like that like that album, 21 is like such a a monster gigantic album.
[30:32] Matt: Oh, you are preaching to the choir. I completely agree. I'm a I'm a daydreamer first clique second. Um, but yeah, I don't know. There's something about turning tables that that is like not the Adele cover that yeah, I needed I wanted. We love Holly Holiday and we love Gwyneth Paltrow, but I just don't and she sounded she did the she was fine, I guess.
[30:54] Aman: Yeah.
[30:54] Matt: It's just not when you think of Adele, you don't think of Gwyneth Paltrow's voice initially, I think.
[31:01] Andrew: Well, Ryan Murphy did, and I guess people are thankful. People streamed it. So she she did a good job.
[31:08] Aman: She did good.
[31:09] Matt: This one is not on my list, but I uh Andrew indulge me for a second. Uh Amon is just he he's not the biggest uh podcast listener, so he probably is just not aware that this is a thing in the first place.
[31:21] Andrew: Uh I think that it would have been way too much if you were both coming in with this is the nice forks and everything. We talked earlier today and I said, Don't worry, I have everything ready. I um okay, Amon.
[31:33] Aman: So one of the biggest storylines throughout this podcast is uh there was a round one battle between two songs that uh had people up in arms and still probably does to this day. Um, even though the song that was eliminated in this battle did return to round two. Um what would you have sent through between uh So Emotional and Fighter? So emotional, of course, Rachel and Santana and Fighter was uh Blaine, just to recall the memory there for a second.
[32:03] Aman: Uh I'm gonna uh I'm gonna go with So Emotional only because you have done a good job of turning me around in that song.
[32:12] Andrew: Yeah, no, I'm not trying to reopen the can of worms, Andrew. I just uh I'm curious where he would have gone.
[32:16] Aman: No, it's okay. It ha uh someone needs to open that can of worms every five episodes, or we get canceled.
[32:22] Andrew: Are we the fifth episode?
[32:26] Matt: No, but it's like people bring it up so frequently that I'm like, and I'm glad that you provided that disclaimer because I feel as though people have come on and they're like, so emotional fighter, and I'm like, you do realize that both songs are safe now. Like that's like we don't need to keep on rehashing this.
[32:41] Aman: Just curious what he would have picked. I also would pick so emotional, but that was another one where I was like, both work for me, both can go through.
[32:47] Andrew: So and they both did go through. Okay, and now we don't have to talk about it anymore. At the end of my complaints. Incredible. Umon, do you have any songs that you want to check in on? Do you have any questions about?
[32:58] Aman: Uh oh my gosh. I'm I'm I'm just all the ones that come to mind right now are just like my Rachel Berry ones. Like I'm hoping that like my man is still in this vicinity.
[33:10] Andrew: Oh, my man's fine.
[33:11] Aman: Oh, I should check.
[33:12] Andrew: I mean, I can check Your Man's Fine.
[33:14] Aman: My man is fine.
[33:16] Andrew: I can check on my top 25 and just go from there. I don't know if Amon still has access to the color.
[33:20] Matt: How about I'm sure he does. Uh how about um Quinn's Never Can Say Goodbye? Is that still around?
[33:24] Andrew: Yes.
[33:26] Aman: I'm so happy.
[33:27] Andrew: She's safe.
[33:29] Aman: God, thank God.
[33:30] Andrew: Thank God. Okay, is Smooth Criminal still around?
[33:32] Aman: Oh, of course she is. She's sitting right over there.
[33:35] Andrew: Okay. I'm afraid.
[33:36] Aman: Okay.
[33:37] Andrew: I don't know who's like we don't know. Life is sure.
[33:39] Aman: Okay.
[33:40] Andrew: We're gonna get to one and I'm gonna be like, she's been dead for two years.
[33:44] Aman: Like.
[33:45] Andrew: Um. Ooh, is where is Pinball Wizard still here?
[33:48] Aman: Pinball Wizard is still here.
[33:50] Andrew: Okay. Yes.
[33:51] Aman: Okay.
[33:52] Andrew: Um, there was another one that I was like, what's the other unique one? What's the update on the Christmas songs? Are there how many are still left?
[33:59] Aman: One of them is still.
[34:03] Andrew: I know that.
[34:04] Aman: Welcome, yeah, welcome Christmas.
[34:06] Andrew: I I wanted uh let me do that right now, actually, because I think it's really fun to provide listeners' context of the last episode that you were on in round one. The competitions that you had, um Welcome Christmas.
[34:17] Matt: Oh, please.
[34:18] Andrew: Then you yes, yes.
[34:20] Aman: Oh, wait, no, but I'm gonna get it wrong.
[34:21] Andrew: Um, it's okay.
[34:22] Aman: Wait, the ones that went through.
[34:24] Andrew: Or just the competitions that happened. We I wrote them down.
[34:27] Aman: Okay.
[34:27] Andrew: Well, yeah, Welcome Christmas went through, Don't Stop Believing the original went through.
[34:31] Aman: Oh, I'm forgetting the last one.
[34:32] Andrew: But it was um uh the Grease song didn't go through, right?
[34:36] Aman: Right?
[34:36] Andrew: Uh the Grease Lightning either. Did it go through?
[34:40] Aman: No, no, no. Grease Lightning lost to Welcome Christmas.
[34:43] Andrew: Oh, right.
[34:44] Aman: Um, and the third one is um it was B OK versus Loser Like Me, and B OK went through.
[34:50] Andrew: B OK one over loser like me season two, yes.
[34:54] Aman: And do you recall what Don't Stop Believing one over?
[34:57] Andrew: Wasn't it another Don't Stop Believing?
[34:59] Aman: The river the I follow rivers.
[35:01] Andrew: I follow rivers. Ding ding ding, you got it.
[35:04] Matt: So impressive.
[35:06] Andrew: That remembers things.
[35:07] Aman: No, I mean, I mean, you remember your singular episode.
[35:10] Andrew: I feel I remember every every single episode.
[35:13] Aman: So for me.
[35:15] Andrew: Yeah.
[35:16] Aman: Um, Amon, are there any other songs that we need to do a uh a status update on pulse check on?
[35:22] Aman: Um, blame it on the alcohol, we were talking about.
[35:25] Andrew: Um, and Amon uh has that in his top 25, I can confirm.
[35:31] Andrew: The matchup that it went out against a couple episodes ago was was tough.
[35:35] Aman: I love it.
[35:36] Andrew: I think I have something really fun to share about Blame It on the Alcohol that I think that you and other listeners will find interesting.
[35:42] Aman: Oh, yeah.
[35:43] Andrew: Maybe. Um Blame It on the Alcohol has never won an actual Glackett competition.
[35:48] Aman: Blame It on the Alcohol.
[35:50] Andrew: Uh um won it lost to Ranjoe Iran in round one.
[35:56] Aman: Understandable.
[35:57] Andrew: And then it lost to uh the scientists in round two because it was brought back from C of from round one, lost again in round two, and is brought back again.
[36:09] Aman: Like this this girl just keeps on being pushed.
[36:12] Andrew: Yeah, and now we can't get back anymore.
[36:14] Aman: Uh love song has one.
[36:16] Andrew: Okay, but we'll leave that be.
[36:17] Aman: Yes, yeah.
[36:19] Andrew: Um how about just the way you are?
[36:22] Aman: The believe a Joe version, not the
[36:24] Andrew: Okay. I was sad about this one, Amon.
[36:26] Aman: You were absolutely we are on the same wavelength, just the way you are, season five.
[36:30] Andrew: Absolutely, I would say undoubtedly she's got a song from that episode.
[36:34] Aman: But it lost to suddenly Seymour.
[36:37] Andrew: Oh, that no, don't get don't get mad.
[36:39] Aman: That has to happen.
[36:40] Andrew: I was just saying.
[36:51] Aman: One of my favorite moments listening to uh the first round of the Glackett was Andrew, you defending Broadway baby as much as you could.
[36:59] Andrew: Oh, I love it.
[37:00] Aman: It is the gayest song on Glee.
[37:02] Andrew: Yes.
[37:05] Matt: That was uh Um That was good.
[37:08] Andrew: Do we do we have any other I want to ask you? So, Matt, was this your brain child because you also did this Glackett episode version that you did on y'all's own podcast, which I implore all the listeners to go listen to as soon as this episode is over.
[37:24] Matt: But explain to me the inception of that and what you found with doing that.
[37:28] Matt: Well, so the that was like a weird journey with that. Uh as soon as it's like the idea popped in my mind, I'm sure honestly, that like many people listening to this podcast have had have had the same idea, like, oh, this is a fun activity. Let's maybe see if it works with the episodes.
[37:39] Matt: And when uh the idea came into my brain, I pitched it to Amon as should we do this as a podcast? We did one episode doing that as a podcast, and Amon was the one who made the call, but he was right to make this call.
[37:52] Matt: Uh, that we were just about to rewatch the exact same 121 episodes of Glee that we just rewatched, so it wasn't really gonna work.
[38:00] Andrew: Um, but I was happy to continue on the uh journey myself, and I did it via Twitter.
[38:05] Matt: So I did the same thing as you. I pulled uh two episodes at a time, and I spent that winter, uh, I wanted to rewatch the episodes anyway in a way to not be podcasting about them.
[38:16] Andrew: Um, but I rewatched two episodes at a time, sent one through, and kept on going, and it was fun.
[38:21] Matt: And I loved the recaps that like I remember now like that you would tweet about each episode and like what listening.
[38:27] Andrew: Yes, and I loved that.
[38:28] Matt: That was really insightful and a really fun way of like I guess ranking these episodes.
[38:34] Andrew: And people like jumped in and said, I you know, I agree, I disagree, blah, blah, blah.
[38:37] Matt: And it was just a cute little winter activity.
[38:40] Andrew: Well, do you mind the resharing? And it's okay if you don't, if you want to keep the listeners like, ooh, what won?
[38:45] Matt: No, but what did win?
[38:46] Andrew: It's on it's on uh it's on Twitter, like way, you know, you'd have to scroll back to find it.
[38:50] Matt: Uh or not that far because we don't tweet a whole lot these days.
[38:53] Andrew: But um it came down to uh the breakup versus blame it on the alcohol as the final two episodes.
[39:00] Matt: Oh, very cool.
[39:00] Andrew: Well, that is a podcast that you can go back and listen to. Uh we we did after all was said and done with with my going through uh each round, um, Amon agreed to come on with me for one uh bonus episode that we did last year.
[39:13] Matt: The only podcast we recorded in 2023 uh to break uh to figure out which episode should win.
[39:19] Andrew: Um and uh I'll give you the results, but people can still listen to that breakdown if they want to.
[39:24] Matt: Uh it was the breakup.
[39:26] Andrew: Wow.
[39:26] Matt: And that's so interesting, not making this entire thing about me.
[39:30] Andrew: But I think it is fascinating that we had the same sort of competition with Heather Morris and her episode with Blame It on the Alcohol being against the scientists.
[39:40] Matt: And it's it really is like it comes down to the bare bones. What song is better, what episode is better?
[39:45] Andrew: Yeah.
[39:46] Matt: Yeah. When it came down to it, um, Amon loves don't uh blame it on the alcohol, and I love it too.
[39:53] Andrew: Uh, but it's just we were both sitting there like, why are we even like trying to pretend that the breakup is just like trying?
[40:00] Matt: I was trying to make a case for it.
[40:01] Andrew: I was like, Amon, like when you're feeling when you're feeling good, like when you're not like in your feels, you're not emotional, like is blame it on the alcohol better than the breakup.
[40:14] Matt: But I just I just couldn't make it.
[40:17] Andrew: I could not put lipstick on a pig, it just wasn't gonna happen.
[40:21] Matt: I couldn't make it work.
[40:22] Andrew: So I don't think that those either of those episodes would be in my top three.
[40:29] Matt: But I don't really alcohol.
[40:30] Andrew: I can't disagree.
[40:34] Matt: That's what you missed on Glee episode about that episode.
[40:37] Andrew: Because I love that episode, like no other.
[40:40] Aman: Yeah.
[40:41] Andrew: Um what songs are we are we rooting for we're manifesting tonight? What are we thinking?
[40:49] Aman: I would like some group numbers or at least one.
[40:51] Andrew: Okay.
[40:52] Aman: Um love a group number.
[40:54] Andrew: Um I want I want a big a big song.
[40:56] Aman: Uh not to be selfish, but we did have Don't Stop Believe in the original the first time around.
[41:00] Andrew: And loser like me originally.
[41:02] Aman: I think that you guys were spoiled already.
[41:04] Andrew: You're gonna get some clunkers this time around.
[41:07] Aman: All the way through to the end of my Gleek journey.
[41:10] Andrew: And it will be a lengthy one.
[41:13] Aman: I think I want some good solos uh together.
[41:16] Andrew: Like I want some good solo head-to-heads, like is it Santana or is it Rachel? You know what I mean? Is it Quinn or is it is it Brittany? Like that's what I kind of want.
[41:25] Matt: And I think that it's like it's y'all that will be the best company to really dissect everything that is in favor, out of favor for each of these songs.
[41:37] Andrew: So I'm really ready to. It's really crazy.
[41:40] Aman: Like just having a moment of lucidity and talking about all this.
[41:44] Andrew: It is crazy how much we love this show. Like, we don't know, it's stupid.
[41:48] Aman: Yeah, we like you, we say we we are talking about these song titles, and no one has to get reminded about like when that was, what the context was.
[41:58] Andrew: Like, we're just so deep in it.
[42:00] Aman: Like Ryan Murphy's has us by the balls.
[42:03] Andrew: It's crazy.
[42:04] Aman: This will be my catchphrase for this episode, I feel, but I don't know if anybody will find this interesting.
[42:08] Andrew: But um, I think you mentioned earlier, Matt, that you've uh 121 episodes that it took to uh like or as many episodes as there are of Glee.
[42:18] Matt: Yep.
[42:18] Andrew: You would be really delighted to hear, maybe. This is the 121st episode of the Glock.
[42:24] Matt: Wow.
[42:24] Andrew: So I do think it's like it really does speak exactly to what you're saying, Amon. That it's like, yeah, we could talk about Glee more endlessly.
[42:34] Aman: More episodes, way more episodes than there are even of the actual existing content.
[42:40] Andrew: We will.
[42:40] Aman: Yeah.
[42:41] Andrew: And guess what?
[42:42] Aman: Yeah.
[42:43] Andrew: So anyway. There's so many songs.
[42:45] Aman: I mean, just to further this point, there's so many songs, and everybody has, you know, their favorites, and everybody has thoughts and opinions on them.
[42:52] Andrew: Yeah.
[42:52] Aman: That's what makes this whole activity so much fun.
[42:54] Andrew: Because uh look, my favorite songs are getting eliminated left and right, but I still have more.
[42:59] Aman: There's so many good ones.
[43:00] Andrew: Not all of them, I hope.
[43:02] Aman: I mean, there's love song, how to be a heartbreaker, back to back.
[43:05] Andrew: Uh I mean, I should I should have checked in to see truly just how many in my top 25 are no longer here.
[43:11] Aman: Um at the very least, I'll I'll let you know after we're done here.
[43:14] Andrew: It's uh, yeah, I know. Because like it's like I don't, you know, as much as I like that people are engaging and they're like excited by this activity, it does like really do like break my heart when I get a DM and they're like, this was my favorite song, and it's gone.
[43:31] Aman: And I'm like, I am so sorry.
[43:32] Andrew: I hope nobody's uh like mention you know, dropping like a this was my uh Blake Blank's favorite song, and they aren't here anymore or something like that.
[43:42] Aman: Please don't do that.
[43:43] Andrew: I can't carry that.
[43:44] Aman: I'm doing this alone now.
[43:46] Andrew: I can't carry this all by myself.
[43:50] Aman: That it takes I just went in here to have a good time, and you know, I mean, like, I think that the positives have out absolutely outweighed, but every once in a while, I'm like, I I don't know what to do with this information of you, you know, having a relationship with uh something, Glee Castro's Mike Lee Cass.
[43:50] Andrew: I don't know.
[44:09] Aman: Um, okay. Are we ready for the first song?
[44:10] Andrew: No, but yes.
[44:12] Aman: Okay.
[44:12] Andrew: Well, too bad. Here we go.
[44:14] Andrew: Let's do it, baby. This is a fun one.
[44:18] Andrew: Okay. From episode two of Glee. It's called Digger.
[44:20] Aman: She take my mind.
[44:22] Andrew: Why'd you mess with me like that?
[44:28] Aman: Yeah, she's a trifling friend indeed.
[44:33] Andrew: Ow, she's a gold digger.
[44:36] Aman: Why over town?
[44:39] Aman: That digs on me.
[44:42] Matt: She did say she a gold digger.
[44:47] Aman: Terry.
[44:48] Matt: I see she a gold digger.
[44:51] Aman: But she ain't messing with no broke, broke.
[44:53] Matt: Get down, girl, go here, get down.
[44:56] Aman: Get down, girl, go here, get down.
[44:59] Matt: Get down, girl, go here, get down.
[45:01] Aman: Get down, girl, go here.
[45:08] Matt: She said, I can tell you rock.
[45:10] Aman: I can tell by your charm.
[45:11] Matt: Farmers, girls, you got a flock.
[45:12] Aman: I can tell by your charm and your arm.
[45:14] Matt: But I'm looking for the one.
[45:15] Aman: Have you seen her?
[45:18] Matt: She didn't see she a gold digger.
[45:22] Aman: But she ain't messing with no broke, broke.
[45:24] Matt: Uh seen she a gold digger.
[45:26] Aman: Uh but she ain't messing with no broke, broke.
[45:29] Matt: Uh get down, girl, go here, get down.
[45:35] Aman: Get down, girl, go here, get down.
[45:38] Matt: Damn, girl, go here.
[45:40] Aman: Eighteen years, eighteen years.
[45:42] Matt: She got one of your kids, got you for eighteen years.
[45:44] Aman: I know somebody paying him chassis, but for one of his kids.
[45:47] Matt: His baby mama car creep is bigger than his.
[45:50] Aman: You will see him on TV any given Sunday.
[45:53] Matt: Win a super bowl and drive off in a Hyundai.
[45:55] Aman: She was supposed to buy your shorty Tyco with your money.
[45:58] Matt: She went to the doctor Gallipo with your money.
[46:00] Aman: She walk around looking like Michael with your money.
[46:03] Matt: Should have got that in short Geiko for your money.
[46:07] Aman: If you win no puck, hollow, we won't bring up.
[46:07] Matt: We won't bring up.
[46:12] Aman: I love her.
[46:14] Matt: No.
[46:15] Aman: Okay, now I have to say the discourse.
[46:17] Matt: Get into round two against.
[46:19] Aman: So that well, I'm so glad you asked, because you know I have the answer.
[46:22] Matt: Yeah.
[46:22] Aman: Um, and that was in Alice Stroker's episode of Gleek of the Week round one, and it won against Friday.
[46:29] Matt: Glee Cast Mike Lee Cass.
[46:31] Aman: Fair, uh, like Oh my god.
[46:34] Matt: Okay.
[46:35] Aman: Um, the one thing that I don't know if I said this enough on The Choir Room, but we're what we're all gonna stop doing collectively is stop pretending that Matthew Morrison isn't hot.
[46:44] Matt: Um get behind this.
[46:46] Aman: You know, we can we can all make our jokes about Will Schuster, but we're not gonna keep pretending that that that's you know, Matthew Morrison is ugly or anything like that.
[46:55] Matt: Um anyways, I'm on I was gonna say, I'm not really sure what the hotness has to do with Right, Matt.
[47:04] Aman: Like, I think that's like really telling that it's like, oh, like what are your thoughts on Gold Digger, Gleek Has version Mike Lee Cass? And you're like, Well, Matthew Morrison's hot.
[47:12] Matt: Who wants to say something next?
[47:14] Aman: There we go.
[47:15] Matt: Interesting.
[47:16] Aman: Look, he just got nothing about the vocals.
[47:18] Matt: He just doesn't have the sauce for the song, and it's they and it's not his damn fault.
[47:25] Aman: Like they kept making him do all these damn raps.
[47:27] Matt: Like in some of them, he pulled off a little bit better than others.
[47:31] Aman: But this one in particular, it just feels a little too sterile.
[47:36] Matt: Um and uh you know, it wasn't bad.
[47:40] Aman: Like, I mean, he was he was into it, and like I could, you know, I I could feel the thank God Mercedes is there to give us a little bit of that uh that uh that uh because this is uh this is Kanye West song, but it samples Ray Charles, so it's just like a whole like cacophony of like soulful sound.
[47:58] Matt: So yeah.
[47:59] Aman: I'm glad that Mercedes is there because her voice is best equipped for that part.
[48:03] Matt: Um, but I just feel like as a whole, the song is just it doesn't like go far enough, I guess.
[48:09] Aman: Really?
[48:10] Matt: I don't know.
[48:11] Aman: I feel like I have like a really I really like this song a lot, and I feel like a lot of it has to do with nostalgia, and I just remember Yeah, that's something right, and I'm like, I I I don't know.
[48:23] Aman: I've said this before I'm like, do I take the nostalgia goggles off when doing the Glacket? Um and some sometimes I'm like very aware of them, and sometimes I'm like, I don't know, not as.
[48:34] Matt: But I just remember this being I don't even remember.
[48:38] Aman: I feel stupid right now, but like I don't know what track number it was on Glee the Music Volume One.
[48:41] Matt: I feel stupid for not remembering the song it wasn't Glee the Music.
[48:45] Aman: I mean everybody knows that, right? Only an idiot forgets that.
[48:49] Matt: But I just remember like that was such like I don't know, I just loved that that that album was like, oh, I'm watching the show, but I'm also like consuming the content on the road, you know?
[49:01] Aman: And I just really enjoyed that fact.
[49:03] Matt: And this song, I just really like it, and I just think that the Amber Riley vocal that starts it off, I feel is I don't know, it's just like really great.
[49:13] Aman: And I like it.
[49:13] Matt: The interactions between uh Mercedes and uh Mr. Shu are not the most ideal in this beginning part of the series.
[49:20] Aman: Um sure.
[49:22] Matt: Yeah, every time he like you know asks her, what do you want to sing? And it's like very uncomfortable.
[49:26] Aman: Um, but yeah, she of course she sounds great.
[49:29] Matt: Um, and the nostalgia of early glee, the uh anything that's gonna come from, even if it was in these two the the next two like horrible episodes, um, that just makes you think of like when the series started, and like the those are probably some of the most rewatched episodes from people that are like, Oh, let me go check out the project.
[49:47] Aman: Sure.
[49:48] Matt: Uh or the and then they maybe I watch the next episode.
[49:50] Aman: Um, so that certainly is going for it, but I have a hard time seeing what's gonna uh what's gonna come next that would make me vote for this.
[50:01] Aman: In what ways, Matt, do you feel like this song is excelling?
[50:06] Matt: Um, so Matthew Morrison is very sexy.
[50:10] Aman: I understand that.
[50:12] Matt: So what else?
[50:13] Aman: Um but okay.
[50:14] Matt: What else is good in this?
[50:15] Aman: Uh the characters uh are all very defined and totally very fun caricatures of what they ultimately end up being.
[50:23] Matt: Uh Kurt and his very stiff upper body, Kurt, uh I mean Finn and his very stiff lower body, like all fun.
[50:32] Aman: I think it oh, totally, I totally agree.
[50:34] Matt: And I think it's fun, and they don't have as many like later on.
[50:40] Aman: And like not like not even like later on in like season two, like there's no like rehearsing like this sort of songs, and I think that's just like really fun, and there's something really charming about a performance like this, and exactly what you were saying.
[50:55] Matt: Like, yeah, the characters are very well defined.
[50:57] Aman: Like, even like Tina, it's just like she has like that moment where audio Medium, she like puts her finger on her ear and then the ho, like to the her and Rachel, I think.
[51:05] Matt: And I'm just like, this is fun and it's stupid, and I enjoy it.
[51:08] Aman: And like it's episode two, and we're already getting Kevin McHale vocals.
[51:11] Matt: Like, I didn't remember that uh super clearly.
[51:14] Aman: So come on.
[51:16] Matt: Yeah, I mean, I think it um, I think it definitely is like one of the first times that we see the group sort of become a little bit more cohesive, um, and just having more fun with the numbers as opposed to like, oh my god, we have to get this right.
[51:16] Aman: We have to get ready for sectionals, we have to do this, we have to do that.
[51:34] Matt: So it definitely was like one of the first times where we're you know, along for the ride of like watching them become a glee club.
[51:41] Aman: Um, and of course, they do a song like this.
[51:44] Matt: Like, of course, like glee clubs are always gonna want to do something that is like you know, timely and like in the moment, and it's you know, like Kanye West back in 2009.
[51:52] Aman: Everyone was listening to Kanye West in 2009, so like it it feels right for the time for sure.
[51:58] Matt: Was was this Gold Digger was like a little bit before that though?
[52:02] Aman: Gold Digger was like during middle school era, yeah.
[52:05] Matt: I think around this time it was Heartbreak, Heartbreak something.
[52:10] Aman: Um, I forget the name of that album, but it's the album that has like uh I can't remember, but no, yeah, you're right.
[52:18] Matt: It was um this Gold Digger was like one or two albums before this one, but yeah, it wasn't as as like blatant as like later on when they were like, okay, let's sing all the hits that are right now.
[52:29] Aman: Like it's like this was there was specifically.
[52:31] Matt: Yeah, it was like a little bit of time here to like, yeah.
[52:35] Aman: And I think last thing I'll say about this song that is working in its favor is that we get I I can't think of another song off the top of my head where we get to see Terry Schuster Dominico in the effing performance.
[52:52] Matt: I don't know why I just uh censored myself in the fucking performance.
[52:57] Aman: You know, like we get to see her like measuring the bedroom for her daughter or gay son.
[53:04] Matt: Like I think it's iconic.
[53:06] Aman: So I don't know.
[53:06] Matt: That's the Terry is Terry is pulling weight here.
[53:09] Aman: Look, if you wanted Terry to go to round two, you would have sent through loser or something.
[53:13] Matt: Oh, see, there exactly there it is.
[53:16] Aman: Loser lost to what did loser lose to?
[53:19] Matt: Do you know?
[53:20] Aman: I don't.
[53:21] Matt: I'm looking it up now.
[53:24] Aman: Loser, let's see.
[53:27] Matt: I don't even think they say the word loser in that song.
[53:29] Aman: Oh no, that's so not true.
[53:30] Matt: I take that back.
[53:32] Aman: I just got uh loser, loser lost to I've had the time my life.
[53:42] Matt: Oh well, there anybody have any final thoughts about Gold Digger.
[53:49] Aman: When's Jesselyn Gilsig coming on the pod?
[53:51] Matt: Justin Gilsig, should I say this publicly?
[53:54] Aman: Justlyn Gilsig, her yes, her manager is extremely responsive.
[54:02] Matt: And we'll I will email him and I'll just be like, hey, I forget his name right now.
[54:07] Aman: I will I shouldn't even be saying it.
[54:10] Matt: Hey, um hey, bro. Like, is Jesselin interested? And then he like responds like within like seconds, and he's like, I'll check in with Jesselin today.
[54:18] Aman: And it's always that answer.
[54:20] Matt: And I'm like, okay, one of these days, I'll get an affirmative no or an affirmative yes.
[54:25] Aman: Right.
[54:26] Matt: But um, until then, that's encouraging though.
[54:29] Aman: I was sad to lose Big Shot, the TV series with uh Jesselin and John Stamos.
[54:35] Matt: I watched it, it was good.
[54:37] Aman: It was good.
[54:37] Matt: It was cute.
[54:40] Aman: I won't spoil how those two characters interacted, but it was adorable.
[54:44] Matt: Oh, they kissed?
[54:45] Aman: Maybe.
[54:48] Matt: Everybody goes big shot now on Disney Plus.
[54:52] Aman: Only two seasons, though, because it got cancelled.
[54:54] Matt: Gold Digger against, let's see.
[54:58] Aman: Okay.
[54:59] Matt: This is like a fun competition.
[55:00] Aman: I already know how it's gonna end.
[55:02] Matt: Good.
[55:02] Aman: Because I know where you stand with Gold Digger, and I know you've already mentioned this song that you like this song.
[55:09] Matt: Well, actually, I don't know where Amon stands on this song, so it might be more contested.
[55:15] Aman: Um, here we go.
[55:17] Matt: I'm starting to be with the audience, if not sure where I land on Andrew's reactions when he pulls this.
[55:23] Aman: Okay, the first thumbnail is above and above shot that a piano looks like what's his face's hands.
[55:32] Matt: Brad?
[55:34] Aman: Yeah.
[55:35] Matt: You know Brad the piano player's hands, or is it just because we're at a piano?
[55:41] Aman: Well, I mean, it could be it could have been Blaine, it could have been you know, like I know, but uh but the or is that Blaine's hands?
[55:49] Matt: No.
[55:50] Aman: Oh my god.
[55:51] Matt: I'm a bad Gleek.
[55:51] Aman: I don't know where we are.
[55:53] Matt: Okay, are we ready?
[55:54] Aman: Yeah, it's Broadway baby.
[55:56] Matt: I was about to say that.
[55:57] Aman: I was like, is that I am just a Broadway baby.
[56:02] Matt: I don't think that's no, that's not even Blaine at the piano.
[56:05] Aman: He's just in the number.
[56:07] Matt: Yeah.
[56:07] Aman: Andrew, you have three gays on the same call, of course.
[56:12] Matt: This is this is bound to happen.
[56:14] Aman: Broadway, baby.
[56:16] Matt: Learning how to sing and dance.
[56:20] Aman: Waiting for that one big chance to be in a show.
[56:25] Matt: Oh Gee, I'd like to be on some monkey.
[56:31] Aman: All trickling lights, a spark to pierce the dark from Battery Park to Washington Heights.
[56:39] Matt: Someday maybe all my dreams will be repaid.
[56:45] Aman: Heck, I'd even play the maid to be in a show.
[56:52] Matt: Hey, Mr. Producer.
[56:54] Aman: I'm talking to you, sir.
[56:58] Matt: I don't need a lot.
[57:00] Aman: Only what I got.
[57:02] Matt: Plus a tube of grease paint in a follow spot.
[57:05] Aman: I'm a Broadway baby.
[57:07] Matt: Broadway baby.
[57:08] Aman: Slaving at a five and ten.
[57:10] Matt: Oh yeah.
[57:11] Aman: Dreaming of the great day wind.
[57:14] Matt: I'll be in a show.
[57:18] Aman: Broadway baby.
[57:20] Matt: Broadway baby.
[57:21] Aman: Making rounds all afternoon.
[57:24] Matt: Eating at a greasy spoon.
[57:27] Aman: Stable metal.
[57:31] Matt: At my tiny flats.
[57:33] Aman: There's just my cat.
[57:35] Matt: I'll bed in a chair.
[57:37] Aman: Still, I'll stick it till I'm on a bill.
[57:42] Matt: Oh, the time square.
[57:48] Aman: Some day, maybe if I stick it along enough.
[57:54] Matt: I'm a good destruct master.
[57:58] Aman: Working for a nice man.
[57:59] Matt: Like a sick field or a wise man.
[58:01] Aman: In a great thing.
[58:12] Matt: Yeah, that's not Brad the piano player.
[58:14] Aman: Um definitely not New York.
[58:17] Matt: Nope.
[58:17] Aman: Um I'm obsessed, obviously.
[58:21] Matt: Where do y'all stand?
[58:24] Aman: It's fine.
[58:25] Matt: It easily beats rehab, or not rehab.
[58:27] Aman: Uh rehab.
[58:30] Matt: Everything beats rehab.
[58:32] Aman: Oh, don't say that.
[58:33] Matt: Stop it!
[58:34] Aman: Sorry.
[58:35] Matt: It easily beats the other for me.
[58:38] Aman: No, no spoilers.
[58:41] Matt: I mean, I I think I, you know, like I think it's I think it's cute.
[58:47] Aman: Um, my biggest gripe with this whole thing is more so like what's going on plot-wise, more so than the song.
[58:52] Matt: I think the song is fine.
[58:53] Aman: Oh, okay.
[58:54] Matt: It just doesn't make much sense that like in order for Rachel to have more because she wanted more time or whatever.
[59:01] Aman: She wanted like to like do less work, but I was like, you're doing more work by incorporating another performer into the song.
[59:07] Matt: Like it didn't make much sense in that respect, but and I'm glad that Whoopi Goldberg tore both of their asses a new one, so that was fun.
[59:14] Aman: What the hell y'all think you're doing?
[59:29] Aman: I'm performing and having so much fun doing it. And Whoopi's reaction is like as if like Megan McCain is at the table. You know what she's saying? You know, and she's like not into it at all. And uh, and I'm like, why would they why would they be shocked when like Whoopi's like, well, I hated that? And they're like, huh? It's like, girl, she's been giving you that same look for the past three minutes. Is Carmen Thibodeau uh of the LGBTQIA plus community? Hmm. Carmen Thibodeau is polyamorous and bisexual. Well, if she was, she would have enjoyed the song. So her husband is at home, and she is not happy that she's not at home with him rather than where she is watching this performance. Sure.
[1:00:22] Andrew: Yeah. I will say on the topic of uh Leah Michelle and Darren Chris. Um I would love to get to uh I feel like they're performing in real life, you know, in the real world, uh, every so often every couple of years, they somehow end up at the same show together. Didn't you see them?
[1:00:39] Matt: I saw uh Leah Michelle at Carnegie Hall where Darren Chris and Jonathan Groff were special guests.
[1:00:46] Andrew: Yeah, so I'm extremely jealous. I'm hoping that that ends up in my future at some point. I've now seen Darren Chris and the Christmas show three years in a row. Didn't mean to do that. Um I know, no one does. The first year and I went um the first year, I was like happy to go. This was it was great. Second year, uh, he came a lot closer to my home, so I went again uh by myself, but I was yeah, like three rows away, and I was like, I'm doing this. This year, just uh boyfriend happened to have an extra ticket, so I went. Um and this year might have even been more worth it because he did some Glee covers this year.
[1:01:22] Aman: Oh, really?
[1:01:23] Andrew: He did what did he do? What did he do? He did a mashup at the end that was like a Christmas song, and I'm sorry, I can't remember. Was it like it was Here Comes Santa Claus? It was some kind of Christmas song, but like in between the choruses, he sang Somewhere Only We Know, Cough Syrup, and uh one more song that I can't remember off the top of my head. But he was mixing the Glee with the Christmas at the very end as like the encore, and it was cute.
[1:01:48] Aman: I famously, and I'm here I am like putting my like crucifying myself right now for sharing this information again. But um Christmas of what was it, 2022. I went to the show knowing that uh that the White Lotus season two finale was that same night, and I did leave early.
[1:02:10] Andrew: Yeah, that was that was insane. I remember hearing you say that.
[1:02:14] Aman: Well, like I don't you have to understand. Well, do you do you remember um from those parts of the show that you did see how much that band talks?
[1:02:24] Andrew: Um he talks a lot. I remember also audio medium, Amon is using the bathroom right now. Um I don't want anybody to think like, oh Amon, it's been really quiet.
[1:02:36] Aman: Uh uh I remember like him kind of like jeering at Glee fans, jeering, am I using that correctly? But like almost like making light of the Glee fans that were there, and he's like, see, every time I say Glee, you guys go crazy.
[1:02:51] Andrew: And he likes he probably said, You guys go fucking nuts.
[1:02:54] Aman: Yeah, and I'm like, oh, okay, yeah, like I am here because of this show, but like you're making me kind of feel bad because um, but he's a big talker. Like, get him on the podcast, and you won't get a word in.
[1:03:06] Andrew: Um, yeah.
[1:03:08] Aman: Then one day I'm manifesting.
[1:03:09] Andrew: Good.
[1:03:10] Aman: Um he spends the entire show uh talking through after each song is over. And I'm not really like criticizing, I think it's like cool. Like you're going to a Darren Chris, this is what a Darren Chris show is.
[1:03:21] Andrew: So yeah, for anybody that's gonna see a future Darren Chris show, uh, you know, have your expectations be that he is going to do a lot of talking to explain his choices in this especially specifically this Christmas show, because he made this album and he wants to explain why these songs are on the album, why he did this.
[1:03:36] Aman: And do you like that or do you not like that?
[1:03:38] Andrew: Um I mean in my ideal Darren Chris concert, there's more singing uh and maybe more Glee songs because that's again what we all know uh from in this uh broader sense, but um it's not like I was upset with the talking.
[1:03:53] Aman: He has a sense of humor.
[1:03:55] Andrew: Yeah. I will say that on the topic of Leah Michelle, who Darren Chris shares a duet with in this song, um I went to go see her uh in Boston the same year, 2022, and and she started the show off with this song, Broadway Baby.
[1:04:16] Aman: And she walks out and she does like not as like fast-paced, because I don't even think that what is this from, like Follies. I don't even think that the original is even like this arrangement.
[1:04:26] Andrew: Uh-huh.
[1:04:26] Aman: Um, it's like I really prefer this arrangement from what I've heard as it relates to the original. But um, yeah, no, she comes out and it's like really slow, and I'm like, I love this song so much, and I really don't like that I'm hearing this rendition. And so like she did it in Boston, and then like there was like maybe like what like a hundred people.
[1:04:49] Andrew: Yeah.
[1:04:49] Aman: There was a hundred people in the room to quote Lady Gaga. And um, and then at Carnegie Hall, she did the exact same show, but for probably close to a half a thousand. I don't know. And and so it was just like really interesting because I was like, Well, I've seen this damn show just at a much smaller venue where I was closer to her face.
[1:05:08] Andrew: Yeah.
[1:05:09] Aman: Uh so yeah. Broadway baby, she likes this song, but not for the Glee reason.
[1:05:14] Andrew: Yeah, she there's one or two other songs I feel like that are on her list in that same aspect that I feel like I've seen her perform. Uh whether she did or didn't do them on Glee, I don't remember.
[1:05:22] Aman: Um Darren in his show does River, um, which Leah does in the show.
[1:05:27] Andrew: So yeah. Well, she like I am pretty sure that the because uh Leah Michelle released a Christmas album, what, two years ago at this point. I am pretty sure that the Oh Holy Night on that album is Glee's Oh Holy Night.
[1:05:43] Aman: Because I listened to them, like I always try to like choose like a new Christmas album to listen to every year by a celebrity, and I was, you know, I was at that point, like two years ago, we were still in the throes of um doing the Choir Room podcast. I remember I was listening to those episodes in those songs, and I was like, this sounds like a carbon copy, and I'm pretty sure it's the same damn song. She just ripped it from Fox and put it on her album.
[1:06:05] Andrew: Oh, that is fascinating because like O Holy Night was recorded for the season two Christmas album, but then like not used until season four. Like it was just like, hey, we have this ready. You don't need to go into the recording studio to record it again.
[1:06:21] Aman: You just open your damn mouth in the same room that brought the baby.
[1:06:24] Andrew: I'm singing that song one time at one time only.
[1:06:27] Aman: Okay.
[1:06:27] Andrew: You're not getting a re-record of Oh Holy Night.
[1:06:29] Aman: Yes.
[1:06:30] Andrew: You know, Amon, you say like we all, you know, know Glee like the back of our hands. There's in that, I think it's season four, uh, my like biggest Glee blind spot, blind spot is uh Rachel Barry performing uh at Nihada in that big room, which is the same room that we just saw Broadway baby in, and she does back to back solos.
[1:06:48] Aman: One of them is Oh Holy Night, right?
[1:06:50] Andrew: Yes.
[1:06:51] Aman: And I for my life on the line, couldn't tell you what the other one is because that I just block it.
[1:06:56] Andrew: I'll be the best or nothing at all.
[1:06:59] Aman: That's the song name?
[1:07:00] Andrew: Or being good isn't good enough is the name of the song.
[1:07:02] Aman: You got it.
[1:07:03] Andrew: Okay.
[1:07:05] Aman: Amon is after your wig.
[1:07:06] Andrew: There was just there was no need.
[1:07:08] Aman: Uh, but okay.
[1:07:10] Andrew: Did either of those songs make it to round two?
[1:07:13] Aman: No.
[1:07:13] Andrew: I don't believe so.
[1:07:14] Aman: Good, good.
[1:07:16] Andrew: Sorry, I love that.
[1:07:17] Aman: I love being good isn't is not good enough, but uh I'm fine with it not making it all the way through. That's fine.
[1:07:22] Andrew: I forget what either of those songs lost to.
[1:07:25] Aman: I feel like oh holy n here I go again.
[1:07:28] Andrew: Oh holy night, let's see.
[1:07:29] Aman: They're just so nothing.
[1:07:30] Andrew: I mean I'm sorry.
[1:07:32] Aman: Uh it was just like the reason it's such a blind spot is because it's like so out of place. Like I guess.
[1:07:37] Andrew: It was supposed to be singing a song and then she gets two.
[1:07:40] Aman: Okay.
[1:07:41] Andrew: Oh holy night lost to I still haven't found what I'm looking for, which I feel warranted. What do you think?
[1:07:48] Aman: Very very much so.
[1:07:49] Andrew: Okay.
[1:07:49] Aman: And then um being good, let's see. Sorry, my like voices Swan song, right?
[1:07:57] Andrew: In the Swan song before or after Glee actually.
[1:08:02] Aman: It's before.
[1:08:03] Andrew: Being good isn't good enough lost to if I can't have you, the Santolo. Can I get a fact check on that?
[1:08:11] Aman: I think Glee actually is before Swan Song.
[1:08:16] Andrew: No, it goes Thanksgiving.
[1:08:19] Aman: Swan song.
[1:08:20] Andrew: Glee actually.
[1:08:22] Aman: Sadie Hawkins.
[1:08:24] Andrew: Okay.
[1:08:24] Aman: Thank you for the fact check.
[1:08:26] Andrew: Got it. I mean, I feel like I'm right, but Sadie Hawkins.
[1:08:31] Aman: Anyway, that's the S's.
[1:08:33] Andrew: They messed me up.
[1:08:35] Aman: Yeah.
[1:08:35] Andrew: Okay.
[1:08:37] Aman: Gay song on Glee.
[1:08:41] Andrew: Broadway baby.
[1:08:42] Aman: We already talked about at the beginning of this episode. Is there anybody that's going to dispute that?
[1:08:46] Andrew: Or are we willing to have that case of the state?
[1:08:49] Aman: Oh.
[1:08:50] Andrew: There's gay characters singing gay songs together with each other being gay, and this one probably still takes the cake.
[1:08:58] Aman: Right.
[1:08:58] Andrew: I just think that it's so homosexual to me.
[1:09:03] Aman: I mean, Kurt's rendition of I Am Not the Boy Next Door is very gay.
[1:09:08] Andrew: There's something about watching physical comedian Darren Chris do that little like walk forward with his like chest forward and he's wagging his damn finger. And they're just like, you are not gay, but you are. And also Leah Michelle, you are not gay, but you also are.
[1:09:26] Aman: I had uh towards the end of last year. I can't remember who it was, but I had somebody in my life that I had a moment with where we're still in the year 2023 at the time, um, revealing to people out in the wild that Darren Chris is straight. It's still happening.
[1:09:40] Andrew: It's catching up with uh middle America currently.
[1:09:45] Aman: Yeah.
[1:09:46] Andrew: So um are we ready to vote?
[1:09:50] Aman: Yeah.
[1:09:51] Andrew: Yes, absolutely.
[1:09:52] Aman: Let's do it. Who wants to begin us?
[1:09:56] Matt: Well, I'm going to go for uh Broadway Baby. I think um there really isn't much debate here for me. I just think that it's an overall more grandiose performance, and those are typically the ones that I go for, especially when it comes to Rachel Barry.
[1:10:13] Aman: So yeah.
[1:10:15] Andrew: But I feel like inconsequential within the episode, but you know.
[1:10:19] Matt: Exactly what I was gonna say, where I think that you made a really valid point that it's like, yeah, I don't like this plot at all. I think it's stupid. But we got this out of it. And I think it's like one of my most streamed songs in my library, like, period.
[1:10:35] Aman: So really, oh wow.
[1:10:37] Matt: Yeah, it's uh obvious if you've been paying attention so far, but my vote is not for Gold Digger, it is for Broadway Baby.
[1:10:47] Aman: I will throw a pity vote to Gold Digger, even though you don't have to do that.
[1:10:51] Matt: No, no, I will. Because I really do like it, and I just want to show some respect. Because I'm looking Gold Digger in the face right now, audio medium, and Gold Digger has tears in her eyes, and I'm like, I can't, I can't let you go without one single vote.
[1:11:05] Aman: So if it was a deciding, are you doing the same thing?
[1:11:09] Matt: Oh no.
[1:11:10] Aman: Okay.
[1:11:10] Matt: Gold digger go home.
[1:11:13] Aman: Yeah.
[1:11:13] Matt: Sorry, man.
[1:11:14] Aman: It's just two, it's just two season one.
[1:11:16] Matt: You know, like some of like you can tell like the vocal quality of like how they have the rest of the kids recorded voices from season one, even into season two, is like so much more blended and so much more like, you know, just the arrangements of the vocals is just it's just so much better, even within even just one season away.
[1:11:34] Aman: And there's a certain charm to like the way that unison numbers and ensemble numbers sound in season one, but when you compare them with some of the more blended sounds of the later seasons, it's like that's where it loses me.
[1:11:46] Matt: Like the nostalgia is there, but like the actual sonic sonically, I'm always gonna go for something that's a little bit more modern than what they were doing back in the beginning.
[1:11:56] Aman: Yeah, good to know.
[1:11:57] Matt: And you're doing it too.
[1:11:58] Aman: I know someone someone needs to collect that.
[1:12:02] Matt: I'm not doing it.
[1:12:04] Aman: Um you do you have Matt's contact.
[1:12:09] Andrew: Okay, we have a season two finale song that I honestly I recall. I don't know if you even like me providing any context. I don't think that you do. But um, as I get the song ready, I feel like I might as well fill dead air.
[1:12:25] Matt: Um is it a solo?
[1:12:27] Andrew: It's not a solo.
[1:12:28] Matt: Oh, thank god.
[1:12:29] Andrew: Um I don't recall voting for it.
[1:12:34] Aman: If I I'll I'll check while the song is going what it won against.
[1:12:40] Andrew: What?
[1:12:40] Aman: Oh, wait, no. Twenty is the the finale of season two not section it I mean uh nationals, is it or is it not?
[1:12:48] Andrew: It is nationals, it's New York.
[1:12:49] Aman: Okay, is it because season three trips me up where the finale is not national?
[1:12:53] Andrew: It's nationals, then it is my fingers request for light up the world.
[1:12:58] Aman: Is it not light up the world?
[1:12:59] Andrew: It's not light up the world.
[1:13:01] Aman: Is this song preceding it right before?
[1:13:04] Andrew: Pretending.
[1:13:05] Aman: Oh god.
[1:13:06] Andrew: Okay.
[1:13:07] Aman: Face to face and how too hot.
[1:13:11] Andrew: I'm so disappointed.
[1:13:12] Aman: We're so close, so far apart.
[1:13:18] Andrew: I close my eyes and look away.
[1:13:23] Aman: That's just because I'm not okay.
[1:13:33] Andrew: Strong.
[1:13:35] Aman: Wondering if we still belong.
[1:13:42] Andrew: Where we are.
[1:13:51] Aman: I couldn't stay away from the show.
[1:14:02] Andrew: Only they pretending.
[1:14:08] Aman: Every move we make.
[1:14:11] Andrew: This original ass song was single.
[1:14:17] Aman: Season two, obsessed with original song.
[1:14:19] Andrew: They were if you feel the same.
[1:14:22] Aman: How am I so not a bad song? Will we ever say the words we're feeling? Reach down underneath them. Or will we forever only be pretending?
[1:15:03] Andrew: Oh my god. Brace yourselves.
[1:15:06] Matt: Oh my God.
[1:15:09] Aman: Oh no.
[1:15:10] Andrew: No.
[1:15:12] Matt: The kiss around. God, the audio comes out, but the video is still going.
[1:15:19] Aman: Oh my god.
[1:15:22] Andrew: Oh no. Did the audio cut out, or is this just how it played out?
[1:15:25] Matt: This is how it aired. The audio cuts out, and it's like a whole, they're only the two of them in the world.
[1:15:31] Aman: It's only them.
[1:15:32] Andrew: It's only them.
[1:15:34] Matt: God. And everyone else is pretending to like it.
[1:15:37] Aman: Andrew, I was manifesting Light Up the World so hard that the manifestation brought me to the episode. This is what happens.
[1:15:44] Andrew: And just bump me a song back. That's just sick.
[1:15:46] Matt: Yeah. Glad is a sick woman in that sense.
[1:15:52] Aman: Am I?
[1:15:53] Andrew: Maybe.
[1:15:53] Matt: No, you're not presenting me.
[1:15:55] Aman: Your picture was.
[1:15:56] Andrew: Okay.
[1:15:59] Aman: Um, Pretending.
[1:16:02] Andrew: Yeah.
[1:16:04] Matt: Come on, please start us off. Y'all know how I be feeling about some of these, uh, as Matt Mitchellia, some of these original swangs.
[1:16:12] Aman: Okay.
[1:16:13] Matt: It's just sometimes you lean a little bit too much into the Disney channelness of it all. And I felt like this is where, which always was so wild to me because you would have a show like Glee that would have so many wonderful covers.
[1:16:31] Aman: Wonderful covers.
[1:16:32] Matt: And like in season two was when Glee was really starting to reach its zenith, right? So when it came to some of these original songs, I was like, why do they sound so overly saccharine? Like I get that that's the point of the show half the time. The show is very much in that line of tone, but I was like, is there no way that some of these songs can sound a little bit more like what the covers sound like?
[1:16:53] Aman: I don't know. It just felt so just I just I just I like I was like I was reminded that I was watching Glee when normally I'm not. Normally I'm just like so engrossed in what's going on with the plot and just like the c like what covers we're gonna hear this week. But when it came to stuff like this and Loser Like Me, I was like, nah, you lost me.
[1:17:15] Matt: I'm sorry. I mean, it's not a bad song. I still have it downloaded, I'll listen to it from time to time, but it's just not my cup of tea.
[1:17:22] Aman: Better than me. This is a never stream for me. Um, wait, are there any songs, any original songs, Aman, that hit for you?
[1:17:32] Aman: Colourblind, even though that wasn't necessarily original in Glee's part, but like it was not.
[1:17:36] Matt: Because Amber Riley had a hand in that.
[1:17:38] Aman: Exactly. Um, that's that was a good one for me. I know I think it was another one that like I'm like, oh, that was good. I can't think of it right now. It'll come back to me.
[1:17:45] Matt: But I know that there's I mean, speaking of Amber Riley, like Hell to the No is like just I feel like a good pop song.
[1:17:51] Aman: Which one?
[1:17:52] Matt: I don't know if Hell to the No.
[1:17:54] Aman: Oh, Hell to the Right.
[1:17:56] Matt: Uh, it's fun.
[1:17:58] Aman: Yes and no.
[1:17:59] Matt: I won't say no.
[1:18:00] Aman: Okay.
[1:18:01] Matt: It's surprising if I find some Hell to the No haters.
[1:18:04] Aman: No, I'm not I'm just um not loving. I'm just it's you know, it's fine.
[1:18:11] Matt: It's fine. Um, Pretending is one that I remember the first time through, certainly, and I don't even remember when this changed for me. Was one that I was like, I feel like I had a good handle on almost every song that was on the show, but it was the kind of song where if you told me, like, oh yeah, like, uh, sing one line from Pretending, I would never would have gotten the first lyric, uh, you know, anything from the chorus.
[1:18:40] Aman: And that did change over time because especially with the podcast and everything, like getting to hear it more consistently, and I was like, actually, this is a kind of cute song. Um, certainly not one like you said, like I'm not streaming it, uh, ever, but when it comes up, uh, the very rare times that it does, I'm not upset to hear it.
[1:18:57] Matt: Yeah, I think what's going on like plot-wise too, just really just doesn't lend itself to the song. Like, you know, this whole kiss between Rachel and Finn just really takes you out of everything.
[1:19:08] Aman: So you're more you're you're more focused on that more so than the song itself, at least for me.
[1:19:13] Matt: Well, I do I also do find it fascinating that season two was like the end of their like original song era, that they didn't carry any of that into season three besides like Extraordinary Merry Christmas, you know, like which I feel like is non-sequitur.
[1:19:28] Aman: But like they were like, Oh, we're we didn't really stick the landing with um.
[1:19:34] Matt: No, like look at the iTunes numbers. We see what is getting the down.
[1:19:37] Aman: I mean, not that I'm sure that like some of them, the Loser Like Me and um Here's to Us probably all did decent numbers, but like they're not doing the numbers that the known songs are gonna do.
[1:19:46] Matt: They were getting they were getting they were feeling themselves, you know, like they were selling so many albums, they were always number one in the in the iTunes chart every damn Tuesday night.
[1:19:58] Aman: So they were just feeling like, okay, well, if we can sell covers, then we can sell original music.
[1:20:03] Matt: Not quite.
[1:20:04] Aman: So well, where do you well? I know where Matt stands with Light Up the World, but where do you stand with that song?
[1:20:10] Andrew: I prefer that one over Pretending for sure.
[1:20:11] Aman: I think we yeah, yeah.
[1:20:13] Matt: Light Up the World definitely it feels a little bit more like edgy, it's got like a little punch punch to it.
[1:20:19] Andrew: You and me.
[1:20:20] Aman: It's fun, it's very like 2011.
[1:20:23] Matt: Exactly. It felt very much 2010, 2011, like you could hear that on the radio.
[1:20:27] Aman: It felt it felt of the time.
[1:20:30] Matt: Um, this you love your Britney vocals, and she has some in that one.
[1:20:33] Aman: She does.
[1:20:33] Matt: Oh, yeah.
[1:20:34] Aman: She does.
[1:20:35] Matt: Throw your dad away.
[1:20:37] Aman: Just throw him right now.
[1:20:38] Matt: Um, yeah, I feel like now that I'm like really considering it, I think that Light Up the World, we can keep her for this competition, but I think that we could have benefited from a cover for a Finchel duet.
[1:20:50] Aman: You know? Just like give us give us a good Finchel duet.
[1:20:53] Matt: Although in Light Up the World, I always laugh my ass off. And you know, Corey Monteith, love him, God rest his soul. Like during the part where he's like, tie it up 10,000 what? It's just like the point to me.
[1:21:06] Aman: He screams it's a good thing.
[1:21:07] Matt: He really does.
[1:21:08] Aman: Oh yeah.
[1:21:09] Matt: It's giving like what he does in Paradise by the Dashboard Light in season three, but like he does it a little earlier here in season two, but it's very different vibes.
[1:21:17] Aman: It's an original song. It comes out of nowhere, but yeah, it's good.
[1:21:22] Matt: He's really providing. He's showing up 110%.
[1:21:25] Aman: Um, this context-wise did I said earlier that I don't remember voting for this, but I feel like I must have definitely voted for this because this one against the Hummelberry duet Get Back in round one.
[1:21:40] Matt: Which, yeah. Look, you have sometimes you have like heartbreaking, so emotional and fighters going at it, and sometimes you have Pretending and Get Back going at it. That's just the nature of a Glacket.
[1:21:50] Aman: Sure.
[1:21:51] Matt: Yeah, I mean, I don't know.
[1:21:53] Aman: Um, do we have any final thoughts before we get into its competitor?
[1:21:59] Matt: I think, okay, ready? Another idea to improve the Glacket.
[1:22:02] Aman: Please.
[1:22:02] Matt: Um, find a way. Well, this would have been a round one thing, so too late now. You and Alison at the time should have, as hosts, had the opportunity to throw your dad away and throw out an entire two songs and not let either of them go through if it just wasn't worth it to send them through.
[1:22:21] Aman: I hear you, I see you, and there's like, yeah, there is no way of even doing that now.
[1:22:27] Matt: I just feel like I'm just like, I want to play by the rules of just like, you know, whatever two songs go in.
[1:22:35] Aman: I know, but I set them up already, you know.
[1:22:38] Matt: I don't want to be like maybe that could be like a could that be a round three or four or whatever thing.
[1:22:45] Aman: I don't know.
[1:22:47] Matt: Round three and four, when we have songs that people love and enjoy so much, let's get rid of two at a time.
[1:22:52] Aman: Right.
[1:22:53] Matt: Well, what you're suggesting is like two at a time, but then like saving another song.
[1:22:58] Aman: Yeah, sure.
[1:22:58] Matt: You open up a new spot to put something else in.
[1:23:01] Aman: If we all collectively agree, say like the just as an example, Pretending and then whatever comes next, we're like, neither one of these songs deserves to go to round three, and all of us vote to get them out of here. Goodbye.
[1:23:11] Matt: Maybe, maybe so.
[1:23:12] Aman: Way in.
[1:23:16] Matt: Against Pretending.
[1:23:19] Aman: Okay, another duet featuring Rachel.
[1:23:23] Matt: This is our third one of the episode.
[1:23:25] Aman: Wow.
[1:23:27] Matt: Um, from season four.
[1:23:30] Andrew: A duet?
[1:23:31] Aman: Rachel season four.
[1:23:32] Matt: Okay, it's either it could be, it could be hold on, let me test my knowledge. It could be Break Your Heart, Give Your Heart a Breaking Man.
[1:23:39] Aman: Or it could be—
[1:23:40] Matt: No, that's gone.
[1:23:41] Aman: That's gone.
[1:23:41] Matt: It's right.
[1:23:42] Aman: Wait, is it no?
[1:23:42] Matt: It's not that that one's gone too.
[1:23:44] Aman: What is it?
[1:23:45] Matt: That's gonna be We Got Tonight.
[1:23:47] Aman: Not technically a duet.
[1:23:48] Matt: But that's not a duet.
[1:23:51] Aman: If it's the damn Kurt and Rachel singing their battle, we're sending both of them home.
[1:23:56] Matt: Bring Them Home is not in round two.
[1:23:58] Aman: Alright. Are we ready for the reveal?
[1:24:00] Matt: The state of mind, uh, New York State of Mind.
[1:24:02] Aman: It is not. That is a good educated guess.
[1:24:05] Matt: No, that's a duet.
[1:24:06] Aman: New York State.
[1:24:07] Matt: Oh, it is!
[1:24:09] Aman: Oh my gosh, I got rid of my—
[1:24:10] Matt: Yeah, no, I don't like Molly.
[1:24:11] Andrew: You're no I don't like Molly.
[1:24:13] Aman: Floor's yours.
[1:24:14] Matt: I will get rid of her every time.
[1:24:17] Aman: It is Next to Me.
[1:24:20] Matt: I see it.
[1:24:22] Aman: That was off my— why did I—I just like felt today? I was like, I'm gonna get Next to Me.
[1:24:26] Matt: In a good way or a bad way?
[1:24:29] Aman: Derogatory.
[1:24:29] Matt: Drinking on the tables. Rolling dice or staying out to three.
[1:24:40] Aman: You won't ever find him.
[1:24:44] Matt: You will find him, you'll find him Next to Me.
[1:24:50] Aman: You won't find him trying to chase the devil.
[1:25:09] Matt: Next to me, next to me.
[1:25:14] Aman: Next to me, next to me.
[1:25:19] Matt: Next to me.
[1:25:21] Aman: Next to me.
[1:25:24] Matt: I will find him.
[1:25:26] Aman: I'll find him Next to Me.
[1:25:30] Matt: When he ends common buildings falling down fast.
[1:25:35] Aman: When we spoil the land and trying up for the sea.
[1:25:46] Matt: You'll find him Next to Me.
[1:25:50] Aman: Next to me.
[1:25:50] Matt: Next to me.
[1:25:51] Aman: Next to me.
[1:25:55] Matt: Next to me.
[1:26:01] Aman: Yeah.
[1:26:05] Matt: You will find him.
[1:26:07] Aman: You'll find him Next to Me.
[1:26:09] Matt: Next to me.
[1:26:10] Aman: Yeah.
[1:26:11] Matt: Next to me.
[1:26:12] Aman: Next to me.
[1:26:14] Matt: Yeah, yeah.
[1:26:15] Aman: Next to me.
[1:26:16] Matt: Next to me.
[1:26:20] Aman: Next to me.
[1:26:21] Matt: Next to me.
[1:26:25] Aman: You will find him.
[1:26:27] Matt: You'll find him Next to Me.
[1:26:33] Aman: Okay, she's good, but I just am thinking about Poker Face the entire time.
[1:26:38] Matt: And I'm like, I miss her.
[1:26:41] Aman: Yeah.
[1:26:42] Matt: I don't know.
[1:26:43] Aman: This could just be something that like I'm completely projecting onto the two of these women.
[1:26:48] Matt: But it just feels like Adina is just there for a check and is ready to get out.
[1:26:55] Aman: Say that.
[1:26:56] Matt: Say that exactly.
[1:26:57] Aman: I was gonna like without this is a messy question, but like do these two women like each other?
[1:27:03] Matt: It doesn't feel it feels it feels to me like Leah probably holds Adina in high regard as she should because it's Adina Menzel.
[1:27:12] Aman: And Adina is like kind of like onto Leah Michelle's like petty games, and she's just like, I'm just here to just I'm here to sing, we'll sing, I'll smile on your face, and then Ryan Boo, see you later.
[1:27:24] Matt: Call me for the next American Horror Story.
[1:27:26] Aman: That's what that's the tone that I get when I see these two on set.
[1:27:29] Matt: And again, that could be complete speculation and projection, but given all the stuff that's come out about Leah Michelle over the years, I would not be surprised if that was the truth.
[1:27:37] Aman: But the song itself, it's uh I like it.
[1:27:41] Matt: I like this cover.
[1:27:43] Aman: I do. Sometimes I think about when, uh, like somebody who has not seen anything else with Adina Menzel, um, but has only seen her on A, like the idea of that person going up to Adina Menzel if they met her in person one day.
[1:27:56] Matt: I loved you with Shelby.
[1:27:57] Aman: I loved you with Shelley Corcoran and her saying, who the hell is that?
[1:28:02] Matt: Yeah.
[1:28:03] Aman: Um, I just remember earlier this year that she had like a fun, like little tabloid moment where she was like, I absolutely hated that they asked me to play Leah Michelle's mom on Glee and not her sister.
[1:28:19] Matt: And I'm like, listen, I hear you girl.
[1:28:21] Aman: Like, yeah, that's kind of—
[1:28:24] Matt: Yes.
[1:28:24] Aman: And she was like, I wanna like I wish like it would have been more appropriate.
[1:28:27] Matt: And I don't know if like I've ever—I don't think I actually listened to like the audio recording. I don't even know if it was like an audio podcast interview, whatever.
[1:28:35] Aman: But like that was the headline that she was like, I wish that I had been asked to be the sister instead of mom.
[1:28:40] Matt: Hear you, understand you, yeah, it does look bad.
[1:28:44] Aman: Consider the fact though that Shelby's a teen mom.
[1:28:48] Matt: Yeah, and I think that the age gap kind of works out.
[1:28:53] Aman: It does for Leah Michelle and Adina Menzel's age difference.
[1:28:57] Matt: So I'm like, just consider that before you start running your mouth.
[1:29:02] Aman: I mean, Leah Michelle is uh is older than I think most people probably give her credit for, like, especially during these seasons of Glee, as are a lot of the cast.
[1:29:11] Matt: But yeah, I never felt like it was out of the realm of possibility that Adina Menzel could be Leah Michelle's mom.
[1:29:17] Aman: It always felt fine to me. So that's kind of a good thing. She's definitely like on the younger side. Like I completely understand on that front. But just like considering the context of like yeah, no, you are playing with a lot of people. You could be. But then again, that just goes to show, you know, the pressure that women are under in this industry. It's like once you reach that certain age, it's like, oh, it's your mom now, your grandma now, you're this, that, and the third. So I feel her on that sense, but like it totally makes sense within this context. But yeah. Uh this song is um like I get why they did it on Glee at the time. It was a very timely song. It just, you know, it was very popular around the time that they did it.
Yeah, exactly. It was just um, like it's certainly not holding up in the sense of, you know, all these years later, we're like, oh thank god they covered next to me on No, but I do know people that do really stream it. They really do like it. I get it, like, but honestly, uh this is a tough battle because they're just having a mid-off. I just like I could listen to I could I could I could stream both. What is slightly better than the other for me personally? You're you're going to cast a vote in that direction. Um, I don't know that I I can I I don't know. This is a tough call. They uh next to me, like they obviously sound great. It's Leah Michelle, Adina Menzel, but um the dynamic of what she's doing there or why she's there, and this being her last appearance on the show after all that she's gone through on the show.
No, it's so weird. What a what a lackluster final appearance, too, where it's like, hey girl, and it's have you considered this a weird funny girl? Like it feels disrespectful, it really does. It really does. Like you have Adina Menzel coming on your show, and that's the storyline that we're providing. And I know that like people like Ryan Murphy had seriously taken a step back at that point in the writing process, but at the same time, it's like, no, bitch. Like, if I'm Adina Menzel, like, I need for the head showrunner to be on set when I'm here. Like, I don't need like this like B list storyline. Like, no. No, I think I completely agree that Dean Menzel should be presented with a very beautifully articulate um storyline.
But her track record on this show was messy from the get go. And like she continued to have the messiest storylines that I'm like, I would have just loved to have been a fly on the wall in the room where like Adina Menzel received the script of like the Puck and Shelby romance. I'm like, what did she think of that? Did because like, do we have any sort of insight of like any of her thoughts around that? Because like, what that must have been insane. I don't know. Not that I've heard, but uh yeah, no, you're right. I mean, from start to finish, it's not just you know adopting Beth. It's not, it's just uh they bring her on, okay. Rachel's mom, okay. We're we're interacting with the main character, we have scenes, we're gonna be on the show.
Uh, and then you know, okay, well we're back for season two, and now we have to interact with these other two characters because uh we took their baby on, you know, uh in a good way. Um, and uh then we're gonna get into sexual relations with one of them, yeah. It made so much more sense for Puck's character than it made for Shelby's character. Like, I just felt like they didn't do enough to establish that that would be something that she would fall into. But because like why in those Reddit posts that are like uh what's the worst thing this character did? Yeah. So Shelby's on the glee Reddit was uh that she slept with Pope. I think the challenge would be name a good thing that Shelby did. I guess like she put together Bohemian Rhapsody, like I'm thankful.
I'm not giving her credit for that. So I would not not sorry, uh Jonathan, that's all yours. That's all his. Yeah, but like, I don't know. She's she's messy, messy girl. Like, also just like it's so crazy to think, like, why would this grown ass woman be doing all of this shit to like sophomores in high school, seniors in high school? Like, why would she be messing with them? Like, I couldn't even imagine like myself messing with a child in that way. You know what? I would hope not. Yeah, like what like my brain, what would it have to take for me to think like, oh, that's a good idea. This was much better. And like again, when I say better, I mean only in like levels of of crime. This was much better than what the hell uh what's her face was doing.
Uh why am I why am I forgetting her name? April. April. Oh showering with all those voices. Like, what happened in the shower? And why was that such a quick snapshot? And it was never addressed again. She's fanning herself, she's in a jersey, they're all looking very pleased with themselves. What happened in the shower, April? What happened? What come into this room, take a seat over there? We need to know. Like, that was insane. That was crazy. I'm not defending I'm uh by no means defending what April did that fateful day. But I feel as though the the character of April is much more of a caricature, whereas like Shelby's character is a little bit more grounded in reality somehow, and she's like doing these crazy things, and I'm like, wait a minute.
I mean, it worked for Puck's storyline because Puck was like, Oh yeah, I sleep with all the older women whose pools I cleaned. Yeah. Uh and like he wasn't cleaning Shelby's pool, but like unless that's a euphemism, he was. Well, do I know the mental image with that one? Um okay, next to me. I like third year. I I don't know. I don't need yeah. I like it, but it also just brings up the fact, again, that poker face is gone and I miss her bad, and I the people that don't get it, just like simply it's not for them. Yeah, that's true. Wait, so what's your vote? My vote is for next to me, but because I at least like stream it sometimes over pretending.
[1:35:22] Matt: I'm not going next. Amon, do you want to make Matt be the deciding vote?
[1:35:30] Aman: Stop it.
[1:35:30] Matt: Why not?
[1:35:31] Aman: I don't think.
[1:35:32] Matt: That was a conversation between Amon and I. Should have kicked me off the call.
[1:35:34] Aman: Threw your Matt away.
[1:35:40] Matt: Next to me. Um He knows he can't do it.
[1:35:43] Aman: I don't think I'm gonna have to vote. Uh yeah.
[1:35:47] Matt: Wait, can you can you talk out your thought process right now?
[1:35:52] Aman: No, I think he's broken he's stopping. Pretending they're just they're genuinely so in the same category for me of like Rachel and Finn, they sound nice, this song is whatever. Lee also I also do think it's hilarious that pretending is destined to be against a Rachel duet that happens in this gum Niata dance room, that it was first against Skip Back and now it's against Next to Me. I just the thing for me is that like pretending at least left an impact on me. You know what I mean? Vote for it. But with three Rachel duets in a row. We have. And I don'm not complaining. Well, I am complaining about which ones they are, but um, but whereas like with Next to Me, even though I love Adina, it's just like, oh, I I forget that this song happens until I see it every time.
I never just I never just think about next to me happening on Glee. I never that never happens. So to me, I'm like doing it sounds like you want to vote for pretending and you want to make it. And it's insane that I do, because that's crazy to me. Because pretending like me don't pretend it's reality. Okay, I'm gonna go off off of the sheer value that pretending has and like the glee pantheon of like storytelling and all that BS, I'm gonna give it to Pretending. Because at least I feel something when this comes on. With next to me, I'm like, eh. Well, I love you. And I was like, I don't even know why it's so bad. And I want to give it to her, but like no. And I don't blame her. Things are different for me now to get into this.
The things are different for me now that I know the words to pretending. Now that I know it well enough, and you know, if I was asked sing a lyric from it, I could do it now. Uh where when I started the Glee rewatch podcast journey, I could not. Um I am with you, Andrew, that I stream next to me more often, but it's like okay, so could I do it back to back? Could I stream next to me back to back? No. Pretending could I do back to back? Maybe. And is that maybe? I don't know why I'm excited because I voted for next to me. But um is that maybe solidifying a win for pretending? I don't know. I don't I how can I walk away from it uh from this podcast happy with myself if I let pretending into round three of the goddamn glacket?
[1:38:29] Aman: Well glad damn glacket.
[1:38:31] Matt: Yep.
[1:38:32] Aman: How could I be okay with that? Uh be okay. Be okay. You helped you helped send that one through.
[1:38:40] Matt: How could I?
[1:38:41] Aman: Um I mean, again, I was manifesting today, not on purpose, but something within me felt like next to me was gonna be a part of today's journey, and it was. Um was that a sign to send it through? Was that a sign to leave it behind? Um is Adina Manzel uh elsewhere in round two or three?
[1:38:59] Matt: Yes.
[1:39:00] Aman: I dreamed a dream is in round two.
[1:39:03] Matt: Yep to be pulled.
[1:39:04] Aman: I don't know. It doesn't need to go to round three, so maybe. I know that Funny Girl's done. I know that somewhere is done. Um and I think that's it. Like are there any Oh yeah, constant craving is done.
[1:39:08] Matt: I know.
[1:39:24] Aman: That was a tough battle.
[1:39:25] Matt: Yeah.
[1:39:26] Aman: Um all right.
[1:39:27] Matt: I know what I have to do.
[1:39:30] Aman: Please tell us.
[1:39:31] Matt: I kind of wish I could go against Andrew for all the times he's hurt me in the past, but not the revenge. Rageful.
[1:39:40] Aman: How to be a heartbreaker uh 101.
[1:39:42] Matt: Um I I have to send next to me through.
[1:39:46] Aman: Thank you.
[1:39:48] Matt: Okay. I mean, like, I think's probably a I'm looking I'm good. It's so stupid because it's like gonna it's a competition like this, and then I know like maybe this last competition is gonna be like we're gonna be pulling our hair out and be like, God.
[1:40:07] Aman: Yeah.
[1:40:08] Matt: Yeah.
[1:40:08] Aman: Um, yeah.
[1:40:09] Matt: No, next to me, it's a sweeter sound.
[1:40:12] Aman: It is um more streamable, pretending like the end, it it it ends on a on a high note, especially when the rest of the uh glee club comes comes out.
[1:40:24] Matt: But the beginning is stupid.
[1:40:25] Aman: Face to face heart like get out of here.
[1:40:28] Matt: It's dumb.
[1:40:29] Aman: It's a never stream, a never stream.
[1:40:32] Matt: I don't know if anybody's coined that term, but I'm coining it right now.
[1:40:36] Aman: In NS.
[1:40:37] Matt: Um our final competition.
[1:40:40] Aman: Oh my god, another song that you referenced at the beginning.
[1:40:43] Matt: Oh my god, what is going on? You're rigging this.
[1:40:45] Aman: I'm not rigging this. I promise you.
[1:40:48] Matt: Do you want to see? You saw me pull it out.
[1:40:53] Aman: Oh my god.
[1:40:54] Matt: Audio beating even says the fox.
[1:40:55] Aman: I automatically vote for whatever is no, you don't.
[1:41:00] Matt: Yeah, but I think we're gonna be.
[1:41:21] Aman: And fish go blue.
[1:41:23] Matt: And the seal goes ow, ow, ow.
[1:41:27] Aman: But there's one sound, then no one knows.
[1:41:32] Matt: What does the fox say?
[1:41:33] Aman: Bing bing bing bing ding didn't ding bing ding didding bing ding ding didding what the fox say.
[1:41:33] Matt: What the fox say he happy?
[1:41:52] Aman: I hear he happy.
[1:41:54] Matt: What the fox say.
[1:42:02] Aman: What does the fox say?
[1:42:05] Matt: The secret of the fox ancient restories so deep in the world.
[1:42:16] Aman: I know you had it.
[1:42:20] Matt: What is your sound?
[1:42:24] Aman: Will we ever know?
[1:42:28] Matt: Always be a mystery.
[1:42:32] Aman: What do we usel?
[1:42:47] Matt: What is your set?
[1:42:49] Aman: A butt up the buttons.
[1:43:09] Matt: Okay.
[1:43:10] Aman: What is glee?
[1:43:11] Matt: Glee is camp.
[1:43:12] Aman: What is the fox?
[1:43:13] Matt: The fox is camp.
[1:43:15] Aman: You said it.
[1:43:17] Matt: Amon, do you have a counterpoint?
[1:43:22] Aman: My anxiety has shot through the roof watching that. And two revisits. So I'll I'll give you an insight into um how things went down on our podcast. The first time we watched this episode. We where is it? Puppet Master, season five, episode uh seven. Um we gave out uh episode ratings uh by a slushy scale. So you gave out as many slushies to the episode out of five that you wanted to slushy onto the uh episode. I gave the episode zero slushies. I thought it was a great fun, perfect episode of KB. Perfect episode. Yes, perfect. Wow.
[1:44:00] Aman: Um, the lies that we tell are incredible. Like, like one of the, I was actually discussing this with a friend today of like, what do you think? Like, you know, like there's been a very big uptick lately in like, uh, Drag Race of like, uh, they want the queens to be stupid.
[1:44:14] Andrew: Just be silly, be stupid. And like that's what I want for my Glee. I want them to be silly, be stupid, and they were in this episode, especially in this closing number. So I had given it zero slushies. Amon gave it four out of five slushies, and our guest at the time had given it four and a half out of five slushies. So I've been aware since day one that I am on an island a bit, but I think maybe Andrew's kind of, I'm like kind of like unlike I visit the island.
[1:44:39] Matt: Yeah.
[1:44:40] Andrew: That sounds like the issue. I participate in island activities sometimes, I guess. I like this song. I really, it's grown on me. I think that it's like kind of like, is it a tired take? Sorry, Amon, to be like, the fox is so stupid. I hate the fox. Like I think it's fine. I don't know, it's like it's really stupid. I think it's like also what I've come to realize recently is like that we can have like early heartfelt Glee with like little like inklings of like, okay, this is camp. This is kind of silly, kind of dumb. And then we can go all the way to this. And I think that it's like, it's like working in the fox's favor that it's like, wow. Like it's like not even like how much we've fallen, but like how much we've like really like fallen into the silliness that like I don't want to live there permanently.
You know, I don't want like I do need a little bit of like drama. I need to like cry a little bit now every now and then. But like I think that this is fun. I think it's like, I think it's really, really stupid and funny that we have the fox Glee cast version by Glee Cast. I'm thankful. They jumped the shark. I'm sorry, the fox. You could at least give the right out of it.
[1:46:00] Amon: Oh yeah.
[1:46:01] Andrew: Oh my god, is that the title of the episode? Uh jump the jump the fox. I just I'm here, I'm for I'm here for that. I just jump and jump in the fox. Imagine that jumps and jump in the fox.
[1:46:11] Matt: No, because I agree with what you guys are saying, and that like I love campy Glee. I love stupid Glee, I love silly Glee. And I'm here for it. I just felt like this entire episode in general just was so far outside of what I consider to be good Glee, even when it's at its campiest. I just couldn't, I couldn't, something in my spirit just would like not settle. I could not, I could never just sit back and relax when watching this episode. I was always like clutching the edge of my seat. Like, what is going on? I mean, there was a man in a chair that had gas leaked into his entire being. Multiple people actually in that chair that were just being absorbed into the whatever was coming out of the vents while Sue was dressed as what was she just dressed as like the prettiest pretty girl on planet Earth.
[1:46:59] Andrew: Yeah for cheek to cheek. I mean is it the worst episode of Glee ever? Maybe, you know, looking back on like the ratings, the slushy ratings that I did, maybe I was a little bit wrong people. Maybe I was a little harsh. Maybe it didn't deserve four. Maybe it deserves like maybe three slushies. I don't know if I would say four these days, but it just felt so wrong to me. I don't know why. I know that like, and I think I've talked about this like recently, maybe even like last episode, I talked about it, but it's been a minute since that recording. But like I feel as though Blaine fans have definitely pointed to this episode as like a really good character study for his character. Whereas I don't think that we get much insight to his personality throughout the rest of the series.
But in this episode, we get to see like the mechanics of his brain in a way that like we don't typically get to. So I don't know. I need to rewatch this episode. This is not an episode that I do go out of my way to watch. I like the fox. What else? There's like another song from this episode that I feel like I like. Oh, I love Into the Groove. That's fun. Nasty Rhythm Nation. Nasty Rhythm Nation. Cheek to cheek, I could do without. Yes. But is there any am I missing any other ones? I mean, examining this episode through as a character study on Blaine is interesting. So I will take that point and rewatch this episode to see what kinds of good nuggets I can glean from that. Because we are famously baby back bitch callers of Blaine on our podcast.
[1:48:41] Amon: So baby back bitch.
[1:48:42] Matt: I will go back and I will go back and watch I don't know how you can say that nice. The final song that I'm like reaching for is like You're My Best Friend, The Blowlow.
[1:48:52] Amon: Yeah, yeah.
[1:48:53] Matt: Which I also can do without. Um yeah, no, I mean how could you not enjoy this episode watching Kurt call Blaine and then Kurt disappears, and then Puppet Kurt is blabbering on the phone, yelling at Blaine for not showing up to New York because he got detention and he's sitting in detention with puppet Jake. Who like what are these two characters have anything to do with each other right now?
[1:49:20] Andrew: Yeah.
[1:49:21] Matt: I don't know. You got damn Adam Lambert on your show holding his own puppet. I know, I know the puppets are really cute, and it's giving Avenue Q. What's missing is a song from Avenue Q. That would have like that would have like pulled it down into reality for me. Just give up give me something from Avenue Q. But what would be the Avenue Q song that you would want in this episode?
[1:49:42] Amon: I think um definitely not the main theme because that doesn't make much sense in the episode. I think like I only know one song. Um only for now?
[1:49:50] Matt: Is that that could work?
[1:49:52] Amon: Stockwork as a finale song. I would much prefer that over what does the fox say.
[1:49:58] Matt: I could see that. Um maybe if they wanted to actually have an honest discussion about race in Glee, they could do everyone's a little bit racist. Um listen, they attempt at having honest conversations about race. They don't really go well, but did they though? Because it felt a little hollow, but um, I don't know. Maybe a little quick little snippet of like the more you love someone. I don't know. But sure, I would have I would have preferred Well, this was supposed to be We Can't Stop by Miley Cyrus. Do you remember that?
[1:50:31] Amon: Yeah.
[1:50:32] Matt: And Miley was like, yeah, no. Not her being protective over her like most discordant ass era ever. Like that's what we're going to that for. And then look, she saw what happened with the climb, she said, not again. Okay. Well, but she said it was like end of end of twerk was before this, and she said she signed off on Wrecking Ball, which I guess like if you're saying, like, hey, Melissa Benoist is gonna be covering this just by herself, and there's gonna be no puppets involved, then that was a much easier.
[1:51:04] Amon: That's true.
[1:51:06] Matt: Yeah. Um I don't know. I think we also need to talk about the vocals here. Amon, did the vocals do anything for you?
[1:51:16] Amon: Uh there were a few cool nuggets of Leah belting. There was some fun stuff from Blaine. But the Jake and Tina harmony. Please. I need it. I love it. I'd much prefer Jake and Tina harmonies over Wide Awake. That's what I want. That's the Jake and Tina harmony I want to hear. This era in season five where we had uh we were talking about it earlier. Um hold on, like when you have the songs that are bringing together the two worlds, uh from New York and Ohio, and having characters singing along in the same way. Uh Mama Mia, like it's it's they all hit.
[1:51:56] Andrew: Do they all hit for you?
[1:51:58] Amon: Uh can we name them all? Because I think they all I feel like Mamma Mia was the first brick, right? Roar. Roar happened. Then we have like we have Mama Mia. Oh, let it be. Let it be was good. Let it be is so good. Um Our Way doesn't feature any New York vocals.
[1:52:23] Matt: No.
[1:52:23] Amon: No.
[1:52:23] Matt: No.
[1:52:23] Amon: That I like. I don't know if there's more. And then uh and then breakaway is the same way where it's no New York vocals.
[1:52:33] Matt: No, yeah, correct.
[1:52:35] Amon: It's just the uh I think that might be it.
[1:52:37] Matt: Three of them up on the screen.
[1:52:38] Amon: Yeah, that I think that is it, yeah.
[1:52:39] Andrew: But they all hit. I was about to say for the longest. They actually do hit, yeah, yeah.
[1:52:43] Amon: That's just new directions. Hold on, we mentioned.
[1:52:48] Matt: Yeah.
[1:52:48] Amon: Um what in what universe Andrew? I'm really putting off our final song of the episode. In what universe do you see the fox going forward for you to round three? What would it take?
[1:53:07] Andrew: Uh it would probably take like the last rendition of Don't Stop Believin', or um.
[1:53:07] Amon: Which could come.
[1:53:17] Andrew: Which could true. You're talking about the season five version?
[1:53:20] Amon: Mm-hmm.
[1:53:22] Andrew: Uh-huh. Uh what else am I like such a hater about? He might vote the fox past I lived.
[1:53:31] Amon: Okay.
[1:53:31] Andrew: You know what? That's not given my history. Yeah, that's not out of the that you know that could happen.
[1:53:35] Amon: That could happen.
[1:53:38] Andrew: Okay. Um I'm sure there's a few up that I can't think of any right now. But I'm excited. I mean, like, I think that the fox has already lived a good life. I'm okay with the fox kind of staying in round two. I think that we upset a lot of people already by sending it here. And so here, I'm ready to let it go, but I'm also I would be excited if it went to round three if it was against a clunker. The final song of the episode.
[1:54:06] Amon: Okay.
[1:54:07] Andrew: I think the fox is called. Don't tease it. I think there's there's no denying here. Look, I'm here. The fox has a fighting chance. Um also before we pull this song. This song was voted back. And I also, like, it was like during round one, one of the songs that we brought back, and I forgot to mention that Broadway Baby was also in that same camp. Broadway Baby lost to Never Can Say Goodbye in round one, and um was voted back into the Glacket. And so you're really getting like the songs that really, you know, pulled through.
[1:54:47] Amon: Second chances.
[1:54:48] Andrew: Yeah. Uh here we go. Do we know? Okay, so it's Rachel, Finn, and Jesse at the lockers.
[1:54:54] Amon: Yeah, so we're early on.
[1:54:56] Andrew: Oh, no. Is this wait? What is this? It's Jesse's girl.
[1:55:00] Amon: It's not Jesse's girl.
[1:55:01] Andrew: It's not Jesse's girl.
[1:55:06] Amon: Don't tell me it's Run Joey Run.
[1:55:05] Andrew: No, it's not Run Joey Run.
[1:55:06] Amon: No, that just.
[1:55:07] Andrew: And Run Joey Run is safe. What is that? What is this? Not Total Eclipse.
[1:55:12] Amon: It's not Total Eclipse of the Heart.
[1:55:14] Andrew: It's not Toto Eclipse of the Heart. It's before that. It's Jesse's premiere episode.
[1:55:20] Amon: Oh, wait, no.
[1:55:22] Andrew: That's in hello.
[1:55:22] Amon: No, no, no.
[1:55:23] Andrew: No, it's not. It's the episode after. I'm sorry. I'm cheating. I'm going to see someone. What is this? I mean.
[1:55:31] Amon: She was like.
[1:55:32] Andrew: Hmm. It's not good. That didn't get voted back. Jesse's looking at Finn. Oh, wait. Oh my god. No. Damn it. No. It's not that. What were you gonna say?
[1:55:41] Amon: I don't know what episode no air was in, but for a second I don't think anything under Maybe no maybe maybe none of them sing. And they're just I think this is a total fake out.
[1:55:54] Andrew: It's nothing.
[1:55:57] Amon: And it goes with something else, maybe.
[1:55:58] Andrew: Like what is this?
[1:55:59] Amon: It goes into a song where they all do have a vocal in it. Are we ready? I'll read is this bit tired? Are we ready to find out what it is?
[1:56:06] Matt: Yeah, I'm out of guesses, and I'm just too anticipating.
[1:56:09] Andrew: It's like a prayer.
[1:56:12] Amon: Uh okay.
[1:56:17] Andrew: Life is a story. Everyone must stand alone. I hear you call my name. And it feels like when you call my name, it's like a top breath. I'm down on my knees. I wanna take you there in the midnight hour. I can feel your power. Just let go back. You know I'll take you there. I hear your voice. It's like an angel sighing. I have no choice. I hear your voice. Stop. Close my eyes. Oh god I think I'm falling out of the sky. I close my eyes.
[1:57:31] Amon: You mean my king?
[1:57:37] Andrew: I'm down on my knees. I wanna take you death in the midnight hour. I can feel your power. Just let the breath you don't take you this. Amber's mom is in this, right? Does that make her a Nepo mommy?
[1:58:04] Amon: The first Nepo Mommy.
[1:58:24] Andrew: Wow. I love that. Who wants to start us in the discourse? Let me I love a group number. I manifested group numbers. I manifested a lot here, and I'm gonna stop doing that. Um, but it is um so like we did Amon and I also did a ranking of like end of episode songs, new direction, closing episode songs. And where did Leg of Prayer come in? It came in uh season one.
[1:59:00] Andrew: It came in at spot number 20.
[1:59:04] Matt: Okay.
[1:59:05] Aman: Of the forty-eight options of closing episode songs from the New Directions.
[1:59:11] Andrew: So about halfway through the list.
[1:59:14] Matt: Really?
[1:59:15] Aman: That's like not that great.
[1:59:17] Matt: There's a lot above it.
[1:59:19] Aman: I mean, they do a lot of good stuff at the end of these episodes.
[1:59:23] Andrew: Can you entertain me with the top ten?
[1:59:27] Matt: Of course I can. Starting from number one.
[1:59:30] Matt: Don't Stop Believin', the original.
[1:59:33] Aman: Uh, Keep Holding On, season one.
[1:59:37] Matt: Uh-huh.
[1:59:37] Aman: Okay, I didn't know if you were like reacting.
[1:59:39] Matt: Oh no, no, no. I'm just, I'll say uh-huh to every single one so you know that I'm processing it.
[1:59:45] Aman: Yeah.
[1:59:46] Matt: We Are Young, season three, of course.
[1:59:48] Aman: Yes.
[1:59:48] Matt: Um, Somebody to Love, season one.
[1:59:51] Aman: Born This Way.
[1:59:52] Matt: Uh, Dog Days Are Over.
[1:59:55] Aman: Season three, We Are the Champions.
[1:59:57] Matt: Gotta boost there.
[1:59:59] Aman: Uh, I Lived.
[2:00:01] Matt: Oh.
[2:00:02] Aman: That definitely helped it to the top.
[2:00:06] Matt: Amon didn't vote for it.
[2:00:07] Aman: Um, My Love is Your Love.
[2:00:10] Matt: Okay.
[2:00:10] Aman: And closing at the top ten was Some Nights.
[2:00:14] Matt: Okay.
[2:00:15] Aman: I there are a few that I was like, I don't know. Like, We Are the Champions, that doesn't really do much for me. But I understand the sentimentality of that.
[2:00:24] Matt: Yeah.
[2:00:25] Aman: Um, I mean, this is a good list of songs in this particular category, and I have nothing against Like a Prayer. I think it's, you know, wait, so I'm just curious, so 48 songs is the parameters that it needs to end the episode.
[2:00:41] Matt: Yes, it needs to be the New Directions, and they need to sing it as the episode comes to a close. I believe we said if there is a scene after the song, it doesn't count.
[2:00:50] Aman: Right.
[2:00:51] Matt: I'm totally with you on that. But does it count? Like, I mean, there New Directions member Rachel sings The Only Exception, which closes out an episode. Does that count?
[2:01:01] Aman: No.
[2:01:02] Matt: It's a group number.
[2:01:03] Aman: New Directions group number.
[2:01:04] Matt: Group number. Got it. Got it. And there's 48 of them.
[2:01:07] Aman: That's like a good chunk of the series.
[2:01:09] Matt: Yeah. Did we include a song like Happy Christmas, Merry Christmas in that? Because that's technically still a, even though there's like solos within it.
[2:01:18] Aman: Yes, we did. It came in towards the bottom.
[2:01:21] Matt: Yeah, of course it did. But, and it's just to get deeper into this. Um, it's pretty consistent all the way throughout. Like season one, um, it happens in episode one, five, seven, nine, ten, eleven, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, eighteen, twenty-one. Um, you know, plenty in season two, season three. It's not like any season is overpowering the others.
[2:01:43] Aman: Yeah, even season six, uh, Cool Kids, Rise, I Lived. There's a couple of them.
[2:01:46] Matt: Yeah. I think like Somebody to Love and Dog Days Are Over are my top two, I feel. Without looking at this list, I feel confident in saying those are my top.
[2:01:58] Aman: Um, but that is really interesting. And people can find this, access it.
[2:02:04] Matt: Uh, yeah, I think so. I mean, if we, oh, do we still have the Twitter? Yeah.
[2:02:08] Aman: No, I think if you go to our Twitter, I will double check, but it should be in like a link tree that we made three years ago.
[2:02:15] Matt: Wait, drop the Twitter at @choirroompod.
[2:02:20] Aman: Uh, link tree is still in the bio.
[2:02:22] Matt: Does it still work?
[2:02:23] Aman: We are finding out it does, and then the spreadsheet is there under master spreadsheet.
[2:02:29] Matt: Wow.
[2:02:29] Aman: Which you can see the document I am currently looking at.
[2:02:32] Matt: Really crazy just how much work Matt did on this damn show.
[2:02:35] Aman: It was so, yeah, that's why like I get everything that Andrew's got going on here because as much effort as he puts into it, I love and appreciate because that's what I would want to do.
[2:02:47] Andrew: We're of the same brain, yeah.
[2:02:49] Aman: Where it's like this is so, again, stupid. And how I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna do it right stupid.
[2:02:55] Andrew: Right, exactly.
[2:02:56] Aman: I'm not going to have a flaw in the system.
[2:02:59] Andrew: Yeah.
[2:03:00] Aman: Um, Prayer. What does this do for y'all?
[2:03:07] Matt: I remember watching this episode for the first time in a while. The first time that we did, we were starting to cover episodes back, and this is back when we were being super ambitious, and Matt and I were watching like we, uh, what do we do? We watched the first 13 episodes or the first 11 episodes of season one and then went ahead and recorded everything and then did the... So I remember not remembering that they did this song, and something about Amber's voice on this track, woo, it set me somewhere. I don't know if it was like the beginning of the pandemic and I was in my feels, but it brought me closer to God.
[2:03:42] Aman: Okay.
[2:03:43] Matt: Um, and so I really enjoyed this song a lot more than when I had first originally seen it like all those years ago when it first aired. Um, it just, it just, it just like takes you somewhere, it lifts you up, it like, uh, so on that note. We also, what we did when we went, we did this, we did this was a podcast. This was a list, but it was also a podcast that we did the ranking of all these songs, and we gave out an MV Glee to each of each song to one person in the performance, and mine went to Mercedes.
[2:04:21] Aman: Amon must have just gone somewhere else because I had already given it to Mercedes because he gave his to, I hear you, uh, Kurt.
[2:04:29] Aman: Oh, what? That was a great, I thought that Chris Colfer was in the hall with us. He just locked down, it just came in for that one second.
[2:04:36] Matt: Wow, I'll miss him. I don't remember where my head was at during that, and I'm gonna say like Kurt and Finn nearly ruin it for me. Um, just I don't like, you got Rachel opening it, you got Mercedes killing it in the middle, and then like Jesse has like a line in it, right? I know I just watched this, but does he? I feel like he's on the track.
[2:04:58] Aman: I feel like he is. Maybe he's on like the iTunes, I don't know. I didn't hear him come through once watching it.
[2:05:03] Matt: Why do I feel like I recall that? Like it's like, like a prayer Glee cast version by Glee cast featuring Jonathan Groff. I feel like that feels accurate to me.
[2:05:15] Aman: If I were to give an MV Glee award to this song, it would be Tina Cohen-Chang. What she does, the little dance that she does is like very, like, it's like there is like a period for season one Tina, and I think it's like during like Bust a Move or like Ice Ice Baby where she does like this like very, like, it's almost, I don't know, I'm like hip hop inspired dancing. I don't know, she's like doing like a lot of fancy footwork that I'm like, I'm impressed with the choice. It did not need to be done. I don't know if that was a direction that was Jenna Ushkowitz on her own volition, but there is like a moment, and maybe I'll put it in the carousel of like Jenna Ushkowitz just having a good time during Like a Prayer.
[2:05:56] Matt: I'm not a big fan of the wardrobe. Um, the red shirts and a lot of them with the white dress shirts underneath. What are we doing? Um, Naya's in a tank top. What are we doing?
[2:06:07] Aman: I was kind of giving, no, I like it was like, you know, like a burnt red version of like the original outfits.
[2:06:12] Matt: That's what I was getting from it.
[2:06:13] Aman: Like from like the Don't Stop.
[2:06:15] Matt: They're a little bit more, they're a little bit more like well done now.
[2:06:15] Aman: A little bit more pray-in.
[2:06:20] Matt: Yeah.
[2:06:21] Aman: Um, I like it.
[2:06:23] Aman: The Kurt and Mercedes kiss. I know that you're down on Kurt for this, but um, the Kurt and Mercedes kiss was cute, and we cannot deny. Correct?
[2:06:32] Matt: I think I missed it.
[2:06:33] Aman: There's a little bit of chemistry.
[2:06:34] Matt: You missed the Kurt and Mercedes?
[2:06:36] Aman: It's just like Wells the Windows at someone's car and not, uh, they were endgame for me. Um, like when Kurt sings and he walks over to Mercedes, gives her a kiss on the cheek, and then she takes over singing. It's cute.
[2:06:51] Matt: Now I'm thinking about like, would I ever do that to my friend? Absolutely not. That feels very weird, but I think it's cute watching it.
[2:06:59] Aman: Yeah.
[2:07:00] Matt: High school.
[2:07:02] Aman: Um, God, I knew that there was gonna be a really hard competition in this episode, and here it is.
[2:07:11] Matt: Not hard for me.
[2:07:14] Aman: Uh, for me, girl.
[2:07:24] Aman: Amon's going The Fox.
[2:07:23] Matt: What are you saying?
[2:07:24] Aman: No, I don't know if Amon's going The Fox.
[2:07:27] Matt: I'm going The Fox.
[2:07:28] Aman: I was joking.
[2:07:29] Matt: I'll do like a little toot toot after I say a joke.
[2:07:33] Aman: I, well, it's not a joke to send The Fox through to round three, so I don't appreciate it being presented as a joke.
[2:07:38] Matt: The Fox is my vote.
[2:07:42] Aman: Wait, are you really? You're earnestly voting for The Fox?
[2:07:45] Matt: I'm earnestly voting for The Fox.
[2:07:46] Aman: Okay.
[2:07:47] Matt: You are earnestly voting. You didn't bring it this far just over Like a Prayer.
[2:07:52] Aman: You have lost your goddamn mind.
[2:07:56] Matt: Well, if you felt so sure about it, you should have spoken up earlier and sent the prayer, uh, Like a Prayer through.
[2:08:02] Aman: Oh, I'm sending Like a Prayer through. I think it's still going through. I feel confident in saying, unless Amon has just been joking this entire time, he actually likes The Fox.
[2:08:14] Matt: You actually think that in this economy that I'm gonna send The Fox through over Like a Prayer? You have less. Madonna is on tour right now. That is just disrespectful.
[2:08:24] Aman: Okay.
[2:08:29] Matt: I'm voting for Like a Prayer. That is my gospel. Um, I don't have like any real qualms with it. It feels like Somebody to Love's like little sister almost, where it's like not as good, like I don't get the gaz emo. But it's like, it's very cute.
[2:08:45] Aman: It is, it's like very Glee.
[2:08:47] Matt: I like that they're all there. And we also have the Jonathan Groff before he's like bad boy, you know.
[2:08:52] Aman: I met Jonathan Groff this year.
[2:08:54] Matt: It was so cute.
[2:08:55] Aman: Wait, this year? Last year?
[2:08:59] Matt: I was, uh, I went to, Matt is a fact checker.
[2:09:04] Aman: I was gonna say, we've only been a month into the year, and if this happened again, really impressive.
[2:09:10] Matt: I keep forgetting it's 2024, honestly.
[2:09:12] Aman: Oh my god, I, it's like blowing my mind. But um, yeah, I went to go see Beyoncé here in concert, the Renaissance World Tour, and I'm just standing there like before the show is like, it's like an hour before the show's about to start, and I'm just like standing there like in Club Renaissance with all the other club renaissance hoes, and okay, money. Sorry. This is my first and probably last Beyoncé concert. I splurged, okay.
[2:09:38] Aman: Um, and I'm like, oh my god, that looks like this guy in a jean jacket with curly brown hair. I was like, is that, that's not him? And then he turns around.
[2:09:48] Matt: Is he also in Club Renaissance?
[2:09:50] Aman: Yes. Yes. I love that. He turned around and I was like, oh my god, that's Jonathan Groff. And I'm so pissed that I was like, I was with a person that like was not like really into like, they don't know fucking Glee. They don't, they don't know. So I'm over here freaking out like, oh my god, it's Jonathan Groff. Oh my god, oh my god. And he's like, well, do you want a picture? I was like, no, yeah, you can't just walk up to Jonathan Groff and ask a picture. He's here to just, you know, be a Beyoncé fan. Like, I'm gonna leave him alone. And but I was freaking out the whole time like, oh my god, like I gotta tell. I was trying to text Matt, but I couldn't because I was surrounded by so many people, hence so many cell phones. He goes, you'll never guess who's here.
[2:10:27] Matt: And I didn't, I think he meant to send a picture, but it didn't go through.
[2:10:30] Aman: He would not go through. So I spent the rest, the next 24 hours, one, Matt is like texting me like, what's going on? What happened? I'm like, I'm trying to send it, it's not going through. And then eventually, like my friend that I'm with, he's like, okay, we're no, you're freaking out. We're gonna go get a picture. So he walks up to him and is like, excuse me, my friend is like a really big fan of yours. Can he just have a picture? And he was like, of course he can.
[2:10:52] Matt: Audio medium, I'm getting the picture in the Zoom call.
[2:10:54] Aman: Wait, Amon, can do I have your permission? Do you want to include this in the carousel?
[2:10:58] Aman: I think it's so cute.
[2:11:01] Matt: Of course you can, of course.
[2:11:02] Aman: Oh my god, I love it. And so I walked up and he was really, really sweet, and he was like, of course, like we can have a picture. And I, we talked a little bit about Glee and Beyoncé, and he like, I saw him pretty much the entire night because he was standing here, I was standing here, and we, at the end of the concert, like after Beyoncé had like, they did the final bow and everything. I was like leaving. I was like, so much. I was like, so nice to meet you. He was like, so nice to meet you too. Hope you had a good time. I was like, I did. It was like, wow, I just like saw Beyoncé with Jonathan Groff. It's crazy, but yeah, it was a good time. We sat together.
[2:11:31] Aman: I feel like I remember he was on like Kelly Clarkson or something, and he was like talking about going to Renaissance like five times or something like that.
[2:11:39] Matt: He, I think that was number three for him when I was there.
[2:11:43] Aman: Yeah. He was into it. Um, I don't think I ever shared this story. I also saw Jonathan Groff. I didn't talk to him last year. And I went to the SNL taping of Molly Shannon's episode, and I was like, I think that's Jonathan Groff. And I was there with Elias, and Elias was like, I don't think that's him. And then we were like both like we had like the moment where he like, he looked at a specific angle.
[2:12:05] Matt: Yeah.
[2:12:05] Aman: And we were like, no, that's him. And um, and I was like, we walked out together, and I was like walking right next to him, and I'm like, not gonna say a damn thing. Because also NBC made us turn off our damn phone, so we couldn't do anything. Um, but, and I was like really curious. I was like, has Molly Shannon and Jonathan Groff had any credits together beyond Glee?
[2:12:33] Matt: And I did that IMD collaboration search. I don't know if you've ever utilized that tool.
[2:12:36] Aman: You can do that now.
[2:12:39] Matt: Oh wow.
[2:12:40] Aman: You can like search two actors and see what credits they've shared.
[2:12:45] Matt: And sure enough, it was two episodes of Glee that they were both in. I think the only two episodes that Molly Shannon was in, Jonathan Groff was also in.
[2:12:54] Aman: So I thought that was funny that it was like a little Glee union for them, even though they probably wouldn't even recall that.
[2:13:01] Matt: But so I think that you're to reconsider your vote.
[2:13:04] Aman: Yeah. No, no.
[2:13:06] Matt: I mean, like, I think, and I don't want to vote from the perspective of like what's gonna make people less angry, because I should be able to make my own adult decisions. But like, I think that they would actually be really mad if I did vote for The Fox.
[2:13:21] Aman: And I don't like The Fox more, so I would just be doing it out of like spite, I guess.
[2:13:26] Matt: So we let Against All Odds go.
[2:13:28] Aman: Just so bitter.
[2:13:32] Matt: The Fox had two rounds, you know.
[2:13:36] Aman: That was fine.
[2:13:36] Matt: It had a really good life.
[2:13:38] Aman: It did.
[2:13:39] Matt: Uh, you know, you're right. It shouldn't have made it past round one.
[2:13:42] Aman: It did. Um, and you know, it got a chance to come up in discussion on this here podcast twice.
[2:13:48] Matt: Twice.
[2:13:52] Aman: Um, it's okay. Um, but you know, didn't come in here saying I'm the guy to defend the fox to go out and not defending the fox. So that's where we are. And it was like a good one. You know, like a prayer was against paradise by the dashboard light in round one, and like a prayer had to come back because like that was just a very unfortunate matchup to be even happening in round one. And so I think with that in mind, I'm like, uh, like a prayer kind of needs a little like saving grace competition, you know.
[2:14:20] Aman: Wait, can I tell Amon about another matchup that happened if you find it? Um yes, here it is. Um, that happened in round one. But and I'm not gonna tell you the results yet. I'll let us get there naturally. Um, there was a matchup towards the end of the round, Amon, that was uh I feel pretty unpretty versus faithfully. It hurt.
[2:14:43] Matt: Hmm. Well, you know, I feel like kind of like similarly about both songs. Um, faithfully.
[2:14:51] Aman: Oh, someone else is viewing the Glackett right now, an anonymous beaver. They just popped in. I feel pretty versus faithfully. If I'm going with like what I feel I would go for faithfully, just based off of what the fuck Leah Michelle does in that song.
[2:15:09] Matt: Um, but I would I'll tell you something. She does something in both of those songs.
[2:15:14] Aman: That's true. I wouldn't be surprised if the audience was more so like on the side of I feel pretty unpretty though.
[2:15:23] Matt: Well they absolutely are. Um both went through. That was the competition that we were like, okay, we have a spot. We have a spot open. Like there's a table over there over there. Like if you guys like want it, but like but yeah, and so like that was a very unfortunate. I don't even like thinking about that recording because that made me so sad that that was even happening.
[2:15:47] Aman: But um Faithfully is moving on as of recently.
[2:15:51] Matt: Makes sense to rob. I know everyone's gonna be really happy with all the results.
[2:16:00] Aman: Um the only draw, right? In the first round, the only draw, and I think that it made people upset because I think that like people like message as well, and they're like, I actually like when it's like hard competitions.
[2:16:14] Matt: Yeah, yeah, I mean, but it's entertaining. There's difference in like hard versus impossible, and that that was impossible.
[2:16:21] Aman: Yes. Um, so yeah, no, I understand that it will get harder, but that is for another day. Today, however, we pulled six songs and only three went forward. Gold Digger.
[2:16:32] Matt: Um I god, I'm really struggling with like any jokes surrounding any of the Gold Digger. What what would what is the joke about sending this song away?
[2:16:42] Aman: Um I don't know, dug itself a hole and crawled into it for the rest of its life. But what is the joke with it being gold digger?
[2:16:49] Matt: Gold digger, um someone took its money.
[2:16:53] Aman: Someone took this money. It's it's it's uh uh homeless on the street, yes. Um Broadway baby, Broadway uh rising to adult in round three.
[2:17:03] Matt: I can't wait to see you thrive, baby.
[2:17:06] Aman: Baby genius. It'll be an adult in the final round. It'll be by the next one. I I projected that baby Broadway.
[2:17:15] Matt: Baby Broadway is making it to the final round of the glacket.
[2:17:19] Aman: Um pretending I okay, this is crazy. Because this sometimes happens. I don't even remember the result of pretending versus next to me.
[2:17:27] Matt: Next to me one, right?
[2:17:29] Aman: Yes. Okay, all right. Pretending, stop pretending that pr pretending is going to happen. It's not going to happen.
[2:17:38] Matt: Uh next to me, you can follow me. You can be next to me as we skip on down to round three.
[2:17:45] Aman: These are getting easier as they go. Um, the fox.
[2:17:48] Matt: The fox, Noah sent out a mass text to all of the animals and was like, besties, we're going on the arc tonight promptly at 6 p.m. And you know who he forgot to send a text to?
[2:18:01] Aman: The fox being left behind behind in round two in his Yeah, but what did he say when he found that out?
[2:18:07] Matt: The fox was well, the fox like was like, oh, I see a flood coming, but like everybody else is leaving. And yeah, it was just really unfortunate.
[2:18:15] Aman: Uh oh, oh, I understand what you're seeing what the difference is. I was like, what did the fox?
[2:18:22] Matt: Yeah, okay. Um, like a prayer, the prayers were answered. Round three. Here you come.
[2:18:28] Aman: Wow. Matt Amon, this was really, I really had so much fun talking with y'all. Thank you for joining me.
[2:18:35] Matt: To end out this episode.
[2:18:40] Aman: What? I know I asked you last time that you were here, but what songs would they be doing now that you would like to see on the hit fox show Glee?
[2:18:49] Matt: In 2024.
[2:18:50] Aman: Oh my gosh. Okay, no, Matt, go first, because I feel like I'm about to like leap beat off a laundry list.
[2:18:56] Matt: I was gonna say I didn't have an answer prepared, but the second you asked the question, it popped in my head. Um because I exited my uh Swifty uh anti-Swifty era uh last year. I entered my dipping my toes into the Swifty era.
[2:19:12] Matt: So we're gonna get Cruel Summer.
[2:19:15] Aman: Oh, wait, has everybody said that?
[2:19:16] Matt: I don't know.
[2:19:17] Aman: No, no, no, no.
[2:19:18] Matt: No, no one's said I don't think anybody's ever said Cruel Summer.
[2:19:20] Aman: Okay, we're gonna get Cruel Summer on Modern Glee.
[2:19:23] Matt: Who's gonna sing it though?
[2:19:25] Aman: Um Britney.
[2:19:27] Matt: I think it's a group number.
[2:19:29] Aman: Okay.
[2:19:31] Matt: But they're they're told me twice. They're singing.
[2:19:34] Aman: You okay with that?
[2:19:35] Matt: April Rhodes, she's drunk in the back of the car.
[2:19:38] Aman: Sure.
[2:19:39] Matt: Yeah.
[2:19:39] Aman: Um, but they're like alluding to a season that we never see on the hitbox show Glee. Is that gonna be a problem?
[2:19:46] Matt: No.
[2:19:47] Aman: Okay.
[2:19:52] Matt: Any other songs that you would like to so many things to list off before Amon.
[2:19:55] Aman: So Amon's going through the entire Renaissance album in his mind right now.
[2:19:59] Matt: Um The two genders, Taylor and Beyonce.
[2:20:04] Aman: Yes.
[2:20:05] Matt: Um.
[2:20:07] Aman: Oh, yeah, no, a lot of people were saying Olivia Rodrigo, right?
[2:20:10] Matt: Uh, when her album came.
[2:20:11] Aman: That's what I was thinking.
[2:20:12] Matt: But we have no, we haven't, like we talked more so when it was like sour, but like we have yet to really like delve into Guts territory.
[2:20:21] Aman: Who's singing Get Him Back?
[2:20:26] Matt: Um I think that like my headcanon is that it's like a Rachel and Santana post like a frode.
[2:20:36] Aman: Okay.
[2:20:37] Matt: Uh Tina's a good call.
[2:20:38] Aman: Yeah.
[2:20:39] Matt: Maybe like a girly pop number with like all the girls like tell them adjacent.
[2:20:44] Aman: Right, right.
[2:20:44] Matt: Or like a like an uh express yourself like we're really mad at you.
[2:20:48] Aman: Yes.
[2:20:50] Matt: And then like they walk through the hallway and throw every boy against a locker.
[2:20:54] Aman: Right.
[2:20:54] Matt: And uh I can hear Marley singing flowers by Miley Cyrus for some reason.
[2:21:00] Aman: Yeah.
[2:21:02] Matt: I do crave that.
[2:21:04] Aman: I was I watched like her performance last night and I was like at the Grammys, and I was like, gosh, Glee would eat it up.
[2:21:10] Matt: Beat it all the way up.
[2:21:12] Aman: I hear Santana singing any duo lipa songs of the past two album cycles.
[2:21:18] Matt: Um as far as Renaissance is concerned, bitch.
[2:21:23] Aman: I don't know.
[2:21:24] Matt: Honestly, I don't think that Renaissance is on Glee.
[2:21:26] Aman: I'm sorry.
[2:21:27] Matt: I don't think that anybody on Glee has like maybe maybe there's a break my soul group number, but that's it.
[2:21:27] Aman: That's it.
[2:21:39] Matt: I'm sorry. As much as I would want to, it's just mm-mm.
[2:21:42] Aman: It's not gonna happen.
[2:21:44] Matt: Um I do think that break my soul is inevitable.
[2:21:47] Aman: It's in it, yeah.
[2:21:48] Matt: It is. I think that I've always been under the understanding that um this Renaissance episode of Glee, the Glenescence episode is a big Marley episode for whatever reason.
[2:22:02] Aman: And I is this like when she was uh Katie Orgaga and I don't know.
[2:22:08] Matt: I just think it's like about like Marley getting her groove back in some sort of sense.
[2:22:11] Aman: And I think that like I think that it would be like unique taking her to like a like a gay bar, house music, whatever.
[2:22:20] Matt: Like, and I think that it's it's okay, yeah.
[2:22:23] Aman: Alien superstar.
[2:22:24] Matt: You say unique, unique, I could see Marley and unique.
[2:22:27] Aman: And I think it's it would be cute.
[2:22:29] Matt: I could see that.
[2:22:30] Aman: And it's Marley coming out of her shell, and she's doing just.
[2:22:32] Matt: Yeah, I mean unique would kill it, but yeah.
[2:22:35] Aman: Um by the way, quick note while Amon's still thinking, um, that the whole thing about like what's the worst thing this character ever did.
[2:22:42] Matt: Uh, Will Schusters, with all the things he's done that the Glee Reddit had voted for, was the worst thing he ever did was uh suspend Marley for not wearing a bikini to school.
[2:22:53] Aman: So wild such a good call.
[2:22:56] Matt: A contentious so wild uh uh decision of like people one glee competitive.
[2:23:03] Aman: Yeah, Glistener Emily, you know who you are. You you really stand by the fact that Marley should have really been suspended.
[2:23:12] Matt: So I didn't know if it was a a place of contention, but Quinn singing Billy Eilish is what was I made for?
[2:23:21] Aman: Yes.
[2:23:21] Matt: Oh no, yeah. I can see that so hard right now.
[2:23:26] Aman: Anything Charlie Pooth is going to get taken over by Artie or Jake Puckerman.
[2:23:31] Matt: Um my god, what else is coming?
[2:23:34] Aman: Are we are we promoing uh Jacob Artist new music?
[2:23:38] Matt: Before?
[2:23:39] Aman: It's a pop.
[2:23:40] Matt: Yeah.
[2:23:41] Aman: I haven't heard it.
[2:23:42] Matt: Amon got me a Jacob Artist cameo for my birthday once.
[2:23:45] Aman: I did. I did.
[2:23:46] Matt: And he got me a Cleveland one for mine.
[2:23:49] Aman: And it was I love that.
[2:23:56] Matt: Wow.
[2:23:56] Aman: Wow.
[2:23:57] Matt: Oh, anything Kimpetri good looking guy.
[2:24:01] Aman: Or Kitty.
[2:24:02] Matt: Kim Petros all the way for the both of them.
[2:24:05] Aman: Like, ooh.
[2:24:06] Matt: Oh, okay.
[2:24:07] Aman: Yeah.
[2:24:08] Matt: I see that so hard. Very, very fun.
[2:24:10] Aman: I just don't like this activity because it makes me want to watch these play out, and it's I mean, unless we're going the AI route, you know.
[2:24:17] Matt: Which they've already done.
[2:24:19] Aman: So they've done it.
[2:24:21] Matt: I saw.
[2:24:22] Aman: No, this would be a fun carousel edition.
[2:24:24] Matt: I saw a AI version of I Have Nothing by Santana.
[2:24:29] Aman: And there is a note that Robot Santana does that is so terrible.
[2:24:37] Matt: And I just like it's so horrible. Like I'm I'll put it in the character.
[2:24:41] Aman: It's like worse than you could ever imagine.
[2:24:44] Matt: Is it better or worse than Kurt?
[2:24:46] Aman: Who said I think a ghost just came into the Zoom and asked that question.
[2:24:50] Matt: Who asked that?
[2:24:52] Aman: I'm not, I don't talk to ghosts.
[2:24:54] Matt: Oh no.
[2:24:55] Aman: Um Matt and Amon, thank you so much for being our Gleeks this week.

[2:25:23] Matt: Uh you may have seen it or heard it in the year 2020 when we uh put the entire thing out uh and then bled into 2021 a little bit as we kept it going as long as we were able to uh before losing our sanity.
