[0:00] Andrew: Gleek of the Week.
[0:30] Andrew: Gleek of the Week.
[1:00] Andrew: Gleeking is the act of spitting saliva out from under your tongue. Many people have gleeked on accident when yawning or flicking their tongue. You can teach yourself how to gleek on purpose by gathering enough saliva, flicking your tongue along the roof of your mouth, and jutting your jaw out. Although gleeking can be quite difficult, you can likely teach yourself how to gleek with enough practice.
[1:57] Allison: How did Glee get the word Gleek?
[2:24] Andrew: Oh, I remember they were playing commercials for the show. Do you remember this? Where it would show a clip of Coach Tanaka saying, "You're a geek." And then Finn would be like, "I'm a Gleek." And then Puck would be like, "You're a geek." And then Artie would be like, "I'm a Gleek." Do you remember that?
[2:45] Allison: Is that an actual bit from the show?
[2:47] Andrew: No, this is like commercials. I'll send it to you after, but it's iconic. Diana Agron saying, "You're a geek." And then Lea Michele responding with, "Of course, I'm a Gleek."
[3:01] Allison: Interesting. I never saw those. But I do remember in the Glee movie, the different little vignettes they'd have of the special stories that go along with the movie. And in there, someone is like, "I'm a Gleek."
[3:18] Andrew: So we need to have all of those people on the pod. I want to know where they are right now. What are they doing? Are they still religiously watching Glee? Do they still play the Glee board game, which I am still trying to find in my parents' house?
[3:34] Allison: Where have they switched fandoms? Because I feel like fandoms, they just sort of jump ship to jump ship. We have obviously stayed on board the entire time. It's a sinking ship. It's absolutely sunken. But what is the fandom that a lot of Gleeks jump to?
[3:53] Andrew: I mean, Smash was a show that was on at the same time that I think was trying to go for the same target audience. When I was on Tumblr, a lot of people that watched Glee watched Supernatural, which I never watched that show. But from what I understand, it went on for a long time and just ended.
[4:18] Allison: I think Cory Monteith was in one episode.
[4:21] Andrew: Was he? I wouldn't know.
[4:23] Allison: Yeah.
[4:24] Andrew: He was also in the film Monte Carlo with Leighton Meester and Selena Gomez.
[4:29] Allison: Yes, that's true.
[4:31] Andrew: I've never seen it.
[4:33] Allison: Do you want to watch it?
[4:35] Andrew: Can we watch it this weekend?
[4:37] Allison: Glisteners, we're hanging out this weekend. I don't know if you care. We never see each other in person. We've never actually met in real life, right?
[4:44] Andrew: We've never met in real life. I've never.
[4:46] Allison: No, that's not true. Don't believe that.
[4:50] Andrew: No, but let's actually watch Monte Carlo.
[4:52] Allison: Please. I want to.
[4:54] Andrew: What's the actual correct pronunciation? Monte Carlo or Monte Carlo?
[4:58] Allison: Don't ask me that question. Don't ask me that. I don't know.
[5:00] Andrew: Monte Carlo is what I call it.
[5:02] Allison: In the movie, they're like, "We're going to Monte Carlo."
[5:05] Andrew: But you never saw the movie. How would you know?
[5:07] Allison: I saw the previews.
[5:09] Andrew: You saw the Gleek Geek trailer.
[5:12] Allison: I did not see the Gleek Geek trailers, but I did see previews for Monte Carlo, probably on ABC Family, formerly Freeform.
[5:20] Andrew: That makes sense.
[5:24] Allison: Well, I hope that maybe our guest, our Gleek of the Week this week, might know the correct pronunciation of that film, that location in the world. Our Gleek of the Week this week is from the No More Late Fees podcast. We have so much to talk about with her. Please welcome Danielle Clarke.
[5:41] Danielle Clarke: Thank you so much for having me.
[5:45] Danielle Clarke: I really wish that I could help with the pronunciation, but I'm like the worst person. I have no idea. I have seen the movie, which I love how it's literally like Lizzie McGuire, the movie. But I like it. I love cheesy rom-coms.
[6:07] Danielle Clarke: You sent these pictures of these events that you used to host in the 2010-2011.
[6:17] Danielle Clarke: I lived in New York. I'm a natural born New Yorker, but I moved to Florida when I was younger and then I moved back. When I moved back, it was the recession and I made a blog. Randomly made a blog about free things to do in New York City every day of the week. Sometimes I would actually host different events for the blog. I didn't have cable, so I remember, I think I watched the summer preview of Glee on Fox. It was like everything that I like: musicals, comedy, camp. I was like, I'm here for it. I was very excited. Then I was like, oh crap, I don't have anywhere to watch this because I don't even have basic cable.
[7:11] Andrew: Wait, I love that. That was the impetus of having these bar watches.
[7:15] Danielle Clarke: My Glee catalyst of my Glee parties were literally I don't have anywhere to watch this and I very much like this show. I think that's so funny. I convinced a bunch of different bar owners that I would post different things for their events and stuff. People knew me because of the blog. Then I hosted it. I was like, look, it's on a Tuesday night. No one's coming here on a Tuesday night. They would give me the bar and I would put it on my blog and say, "Hey, I'm hosting a free Glee party." The first night, I was like, I don't know who's going to show. I thought it was just going to be my friends. They just kept getting bigger and bigger each week. That's how my Glee parties. I'd have Glee drink specials and everything.
[8:07] Andrew: You sent us pictures of the menu, this Rachel Cranberry Vodka, Rum and Kurt, the Glee-tini, and the Sue Sylvester Slammer, which is a shot. They're all $5, which is a very good price for a drink.
[8:25] Danielle Clarke: I'm a good haggler when it's coming down. The whole thing of my events, they were free and I'm trying to live cost-conscious. They made them really good happy hour specials and food nibblers and whatnot.
[8:41] Andrew: That is so funny. You hosted these events week to week throughout season one?
[8:49] Danielle Clarke: Season one, I would say I was pretty steady of doing them almost every week. If I didn't do them every week, I think season one and two probably had the biggest theme nights or Madonna night, Britney night. It was really easy to just maybe focus on some of those bigger episodes when they were doing the "We Did It Britney" episode. That made it easier. Season two, I didn't do them as much, but I did do a season two finale watch party. I also did a season one finale and the local Fox syndicate came and interviewed us. I found my interview and I had to send it to you guys. I was so excited about this season finale.
[9:44] Andrew: Oh man. That's so funny. You also hosted, was it just one Glee Project party?
[9:52] Danielle Clarke: Yeah. In the beginning, I was using my own money. I was doing trivia games in between commercials, which people loved. I was giving away 7-Eleven gift cards for slushies. When season one finished, I did the, I think they split the seasons into two DVDs. The first half of the first season, I think, came out because I was giving that away. Then I was like, okay, I don't have money to be buying all this stuff. I went on Twitter and I just started reaching out to anybody that worked at Fox, anybody that worked at Oxygen or NBC because they were going to be doing the Glee Project. I was just like, look, I hosted Glee Party. I was on Fox. Send me some stuff. Fox, the syndicate, sent me three huge boxes of Glee t-shirts, hats, and Glee backpacks.
I didn't keep all of them. After a while, I was like, I got to get rid of these because I didn't think these were going to be memorabilia. I just thought they were fun. I just had so many left over. I remember trying to give it away to my little sister. She's younger than me, so we have a huge age gap. She was too cool for that. She was like, I don't want this. We would go to Disney and have Glee backpacks because they're very handy.
[11:20] Danielle Clarke: Originally, what happened? Somebody from Oxygen wrote back and sent us t-shirts from the Glee Project. They saw that I was hosting the season finale for season two. Then the lady asked me if she's like, "This seems cool. Would you want to host the launch of the Glee Project with the whole cast and everything?" I was like, yeah, but I was such an idiot. I should have totally got paid for that. I did not get paid for that.
[11:54] Andrew: Dang.
[11:56] Danielle Clarke: The goodness of your heart. I was a dum-dum. You know what? It was so much fun. The cast was so sweet. They were all so nice. We had a lot of fun.
[12:08] Andrew: No, these pictures are so funny. I'm scrolling through and seeing pictures with you and Cameron Mitchell, Damon McGinty, Lindsay Pierce. It is the funniest thing in the world. I'm just mad I didn't take a picture with Alex.
[12:20] Danielle Clarke: The entire cast was... Everybody was there. That was fully the premiere party.
[12:34] Andrew: We have a proposal for you. It's mostly me. This is all Andrew's idea. I'm thinking about it. Because when Allison comes to New York this weekend, we're going on a little boozy cruise around Manhattan on Saturday. Honestly, I think we should all plan. I'm just projecting. You can accept or deny, Danielle, if you would like to help plan a Glee booze cruise around Manhattan where there's spiked slushy drinks. Wouldn't that just be so much fun? We can get some of the cast there for a few hours. We go all around the island. It will be so much fun.
[13:24] Danielle Clarke: Honestly, Andrew, I don't know if you're joking or not, but I'm 100% down. I'm already thinking about the different vendors that I know that actually have the boats that do the cruises and stuff.
[13:34] Andrew: Okay, great.
[13:36] Danielle Clarke: Oh my gosh. I'm so glad that we have this entire exchange recorded and released so people have you accountable. I'm down for it. I'm really good at planning parties.
[13:46] Andrew: Okay, this is going to be so much fun.
[13:48] Danielle Clarke: I'm here for it. Yes, I love. Glee cruise coming at you, Manhattan.
[13:54] Andrew: And with karaoke on every floor? Oh, yes.
[13:58] Danielle Clarke: The photo ops, the drink specials.
[14:02] Andrew: Yeah, karaoke for sure. And only the Glee cast renditions.
[14:52] Andrew: Welcome back to Gleek of the Week! Today, we’re diving into another exciting episode of Glee, and I’m thrilled to have Danielle Clarke from the No Late Fees podcast joining us.
[15:22] Danielle Clarke: Thanks for having me! I’m so excited to be here and talk about Glee with you both.
[15:47] Allison: We’re excited to have you! So, Danielle, we’ve been doing a little research on the word “gleek.” Did you know it has some interesting origins?
[16:12] Danielle Clarke: I did! It’s fascinating how the term has evolved over time. Originally, it referred to a kind of joke or trick, and now it’s become synonymous with fans of Glee.
[16:37] Andrew: Right! And it’s also used in some other contexts, like in the world of gaming. It’s amazing how one word can have so many meanings.
[16:57] Allison: Absolutely! And speaking of meanings, I think we should talk about your experience hosting Glee watch parties. Those sound like a blast!
[17:17] Danielle Clarke: They really are! I love bringing people together to watch the show. It’s such a fun way to relive those moments and share the music.
[17:37] Andrew: What’s been your favorite part about hosting those parties?
[17:57] Danielle Clarke: I think it’s the community aspect. Everyone comes together, and there’s so much energy and excitement. Plus, the sing-alongs are always a highlight!
[18:17] Allison: That sounds amazing! We should definitely plan a Glee event ourselves.
[18:37] Andrew: Yes! I was thinking we could do something like a Glooze Cruise—imagine a party boat full of Gleeks!
[18:57] Danielle Clarke: That would be epic! A boat full of fans singing their hearts out. I’m in!
[19:17] Allison: We better start planning this!
[19:37] Andrew: For sure! And we can include some fun activities, maybe even a karaoke contest.
[19:47] Danielle Clarke: Oh, I love that idea! We could have themed performances and prizes for the best renditions.
[20:07] Allison: This is shaping up to be quite the event!
[20:27] Andrew: It really is! And speaking of performances, let’s talk about some of the songs featured in this episode of Glee.
[20:47] Danielle Clarke: Yes! I’m excited to hear what you guys think about them.
[21:07] Andrew: One of the standout performances was by the band FUN. Their energy is just infectious.
[21:27] Allison: I agree! And then there’s that extreme use of auto-tune in one of the songs. It’s definitely a choice.
[21:47] Danielle Clarke: It really is! Sometimes it works, and sometimes it’s just a bit much.
[22:07] Andrew: And let’s not forget the remix of that Lady Gaga hit. It was definitely an interesting take.
[22:27] Allison: For sure! It’s always fun to see how they reinterpret popular songs.
[22:47] Danielle Clarke: Absolutely! Glee has a way of making songs feel fresh and new.
[23:07] Andrew: And that’s what makes it such a beloved show. The music really brings everything to life.
[23:17] Allison: It does! I can’t wait to see where these performances land on the Glacket.
[23:37] Danielle Clarke: Same here! It’s going to be exciting to see which songs make it to the top.

[25:37] Andrew: Definitely! And it’s such a catchy song.
[25:57] Danielle Clarke: For sure! It’s hard not to sing along.

[27:57] Allison: Exactly! It’s bold, that’s for sure.
[28:17] Andrew: Alright, let’s wrap up our thoughts on this performance before we move on.
[28:37] Danielle Clarke: Sounds good! I’m excited to see how it all plays out on the Glacket.
[28:45] Danielle Clarke: Oh, is that what happened? He and Glee Project season one, he voluntarily left the competition.
[29:15] Andrew: Oh, but then like before, we need to talk about Glee Project as like as a whole, just like a whole other time. But like this messed me up. Cameron Mitchell, like he volunteered to leave. But like Ryan Murphy was like, Okay, if you're leaving, then I guess Damien isn't being eliminated. And then he went, he goes back into the room and says, Hey, Damien, you were going to get eliminated, which is like, you're fucking mean. Yeah, that's mean, Cameron.
[29:58] Danielle Clarke: So Cameron tells him, I pretty much I saved you. I saved you. And it's like, yeah, feels icky. Feels like weird. Damien, by the way, is probably the nicest person I've ever met.
[30:11] Andrew: Really? I bet.
[30:12] Danielle Clarke: Yeah, he's so sweet. And his accent is so adorable. But at the Glee Project party, one of his bandmates from the band that he's in, in Ireland was there. And he was like, I wasn't even talking to Damien. I was like, let me take a picture with your friend. He was really handsome. Hey, by the way, I have a solo album coming out. Can I please just shove a song in there? It's just like, yes, please.
[32:24] Andrew: It's literally like the Vampire Diaries where every single person on that show knew how to sing and like everyone had their songs featured. Except Bonnie. I'm not even a Vampire Diaries fan. But I do know that little bit of trivia.

But I think that Glee, what they do in a lot of situations, especially these tribute episodes, because this is the Lady Gaga tribute episode, that they sort of pigeonhole themselves into only selecting from like, like a select group of songs, that it's like, oh, I guess, Poker Face is the song that they're going to be singing. They're doing something different. They're doing something fun. You have Lea Michele, Idina Menzel, collaborating on this Glee cast cover, and it is iconic. [47:11] Danielle Clarke: Um, yeah, it's super hard. But I still I'm gonna go with the Finchel duet. So good. So good.
[47:25] Allison Dodge: Because I'm gonna go with the Finchel duet too.
[47:29] Andrew McGuire: This is so annoying. Are you kidding?
[47:33] Danielle Clarke: I'm so sorry, Andrew.
[47:34] Andrew McGuire: No, it's okay. I just want you to justify it.
[47:37] Danielle Clarke: Um, it's Finchel. I love the song. I love them duetting together. And I'm still mad that Idina and like, Rachel and her and her mom didn't get a better song. Like I just felt like that song could have spoke so much of unsaid things between the two of them. They just missed out on such an opportunity. I, you know, it is what it is. But it isn't, you know, right. So sorry, I'm sorry.
[48:09] Andrew McGuire: It's okay.
[48:10] Allison Dodge: You can bring it back, Andrew. 200th song.
[48:12] Andrew McGuire: I know, like, well, like, I already want to bring back Hello, even though I did vote against it. But I guess, yeah, Poker Face is, is front runner. Currently for me. I'm very upset to see it go already.
[48:29] Danielle Clarke: I have to pick something that's better than Poker Face. So we never hear Poker Face again.
[48:36] Andrew McGuire: Um, oh, this is a fun one. We have a it's a season six fun one, if you could believe.
[48:45] Allison Dodge: Are you sure?
[48:46] Andrew McGuire: Season six and fun in the same word. I mean, same sentence.
[49:16] ♪ Musical number: "Home" — performed by the entire cast ♪
[51:40] Andrew McGuire: Performed by literally like the entire cast.
[51:42] Allison Dodge: The entire squad.
[51:44] Danielle Clarke: You guys ready?
[51:45] Andrew McGuire: Yes. Okay, go. Go off, please.
[51:47] Danielle Clarke: I got a lot. There's a lot. And some of it is not even about the song. One thing that I just cannot get over that Glee did was break up Mercedes and Sam. Oh, God, no.
[52:06] Allison Dodge: Not break up as boyfriend and girlfriend, but friends.
[52:09] Danielle Clarke: That, yeah.
[52:11] Allison Dodge: Kurt and Mercedes friendship that was they started in season one. Just like, did it make sense that he would gravitate towards Rachel? And instead, like, it never made sense to me.
[52:26] Danielle Clarke: Yeah.
[52:26] Allison Dodge: I mean, I guess because of Finn, and that was like his brother, and they were dating. But like, that Mercedes and him had such a close friendship, and then it just like got dropped. And then also Mercedes and Quinn's friendship that was really could have been something like that really always bothered me a lot. So I just wanted to say that. And I completely agree.
[52:52] Danielle Clarke: Speak your truth. Yes.
[52:54] Allison Dodge: The incest twins, I totally forgot about that. I did like them. But that song, at some parts when they were singing to each other, it's like, it's like, this seems like a lover song.
[53:07] Danielle Clarke: Yeah, siblings, it was they always, it's like they did it on purpose to make those weird vibes.
[53:12] Andrew McGuire: I think that was like, probably like the direction.
[53:15] Allison Dodge: Yeah, too. They were like, they were trying to make that the joke. Yeah.
[53:19] Danielle Clarke: Yeah. But incest is not funny.
[53:22] Allison Dodge: No.
[53:22] Danielle Clarke: Hey, Ryan, Ryan Murphy,
[53:24] Andrew McGuire: Ryan Murphy, if you're listening.
[53:26] Danielle Clarke: It's not funny. It's not. It's not cute. Thank you. I did love the song though. And I, I love how they made some excuse how all these children living their lives are coming back to this runky, rinky dink town that they all tried to get the hell out of.
[53:43] Allison Dodge: Right? That can somehow afford a fireworks display.
[53:47] Danielle Clarke: Yeah. And, and then, obviously, Sue saying random stuff was hilarious, because she just can. And then I do like the callback to Finn, the quarterback finding him singing in the locker room. Yes. But this time, less creepy, because he had his clothes on, and he wasn't in the shower. So love that. Love that for us.
[54:09] Andrew McGuire: That's growth. Yeah.
[54:14] Allison Dodge: I am going to command all everyone that's listening to watch this performance for two things. At the beginning of the song, when Rachel is in the back of the golf cart, every time that she says the, hey, it literally she is like barking. It's like very aggressive. It is so jarring. It is like she is using her entire like head to do this, do the sound. Second thing and last thing is when Tina and Artie arrive at the football field.
[54:49] Danielle Clarke: Yes. Mercedes greets them.
[54:51] Allison Dodge: Did you catch the catch this as well? It's not Mercedes singing at all.
[54:55] Danielle Clarke: It's Quinn's voice. Yeah. And it's like, I guess like I don't I don't know what even happened there. But it's like why have Mercedes like lip sync for Quinn? It's just like it's so weird. But I love this. I think it's like probably like top five songs in the last season. The last season does not have a lot of like quality songs. I think that's like the general consensus.
[55:23] Andrew McGuire: Yeah. But this is like very cute and involves like a lot of the original cast. Also with some of the newer cast who do all have good voices. So yeah. Noah, Noah Guthrie knocks it out of the park.
[55:36] Allison Dodge: Yeah. He comes in on a song. It's like, no, this is Noah's song now. Yeah, this is it. Yeah.
[55:42] Danielle Clarke: I did love the new batch of kids. I really did. I liked them all. I didn't hate the other kids either. But I like these kids probably a little bit better.
[55:55] Andrew McGuire: No, I agree. They were like a little bit more like original. Whereas that season four cast was like it seemed like a replication of like Kitty with Quinn, you know. Yeah. Marley with Rachel Finn. Yeah. You know, just it. But this was like a little bit more original.
[56:18] Danielle Clarke: Yeah. So I my one thought from this, in addition to everything that's already been said, is I would like to send whoever thought of the Blaine Karofsky storyline. I would like to send all of my therapy bills to them because they are responsible for my pain. I hate the Blaine Karofsky storyline. I think it's absolutely the worst. In this video, you can see them like cuddling in a truck and Rachel is like, Oh, Kurt, it's gonna be okay. I hate I hate that. Rachel's not even a real friend. I would have cut that bitch.
[56:57] Allison Dodge: Exactly. I've been like, No, it's not fine. Karofsky hurt Kurt physically and deeply emotional.
[57:03] Danielle Clarke: Yeah. I don't think Blaine actually loved him as a human would ever fucking date somebody that ever did that in the past. And it's almost imply a word in this rinky dink town. There's no weather. No other gay people like that. I harder. You went to a full of gay.
[57:19] Andrew McGuire: Or you better have like some freaking long distance love affair because this is ridiculous.
[57:25] Danielle Clarke: And yeah, and then Blaine almost looks uncomfortable but not uncomfortable in the way that like, he's

[57:40] Danielle Clarke: Oh, my God. Okay, so I definitely feel like they would do a very corny Meg the Stallion. A lot of Meg covers 100% trying to twerk, of course.
[57:56] Danielle Clarke: Oh, this is hard. Okay. I did listen before and someone did say Olivia Rodrigo 100%. They're doing that.
[58:04] Andrew McGuire: Yeah.
[58:06] Danielle Clarke: You know, it's so hard, because I don't listen to the radio as much anymore. And it's strictly TikTok songs that, yeah, oh, you know what they would do? I feel like they would do definitely do some episodes completely dedicated to K-pop.
[58:20] Danielle Clarke: I would love to see some Blackpink 100%. And definitely, I'm thinking of the song Butter.
[58:27] Andrew McGuire: Oh, BTS?

[58:42] Andrew McGuire: And would they be doing it well? Do you think?
[58:45] Danielle Clarke: Hell no. No, first of all, not even close. Those K-pop bands have the conditioning and the things that they have to do. They are on point. So no, not even close. Not Blackpink.
