[0:00] Andrew: We've got a mission to find the best song that's ever been on Glee.

[0:09] Andrew: There's no rhyme or reason to it, so don't get mad at me.

[0:18] Andrew: Gleek it by Gleek it, we'll rank everyone to see which song will move closer to spot number one.

[0:26] Andrew: Gleek of the Week, Gleek, Gleek, Gleek of the Week. It's Gleek, Gleek of the Week.

[0:35] Andrew: Okay, hey, um, we're back with, I know I said in the last episode, this is so rude to be starting the episode off like this, I said in the last episode that I tried to book Heather Morris and Jenna Ushkowitz on this week's episode, they said they don't want to talk about the Glee boot, thus I don't have Jenna Ushkowitz and Heather Morris, but I do have the two very, the next in line people who can talk their ass about Glee, probably much better than Jenna and Heather, let's say it. Allyson and Aman, hey.

[1:02] Allyson Alamode: Hey.

[1:03] Aman Adwin: Hey.

[1:04] Andrew: Okay, so it's been a minute. I feel like we're starting the episodes now with just like checking in, gauge wise, Glee boot. Aman, where were you when the Glee boot news reached you?

[1:21] Aman Adwin: Um, where the hell was I? I think I was at work. Uh, and I was kinda like, okay, um, I mean, I'm here for it, there's so many things that can get rebooted and remade over and over and over again, why not Glee? I mean, it has been over a decade now since the show has gone off the air. Um, and so that's like, it's like around the time these days where reboots start becoming, uh, something that you put on the table. I just don't know what the story is. And I listened, I was trying to catch up on, uh, Gleek of the Week, um, and I heard some of the theories and they were very entertaining.

[2:06] Allyson Alamode: Yes, of course.

[2:12] Aman Adwin: Yes. Yes, Allyson, she ate that thesis up. I just don't, I don't know if I necessarily want all of the cast to come back. And I understand what you were saying as well, Andrew, or it's like, I think it was you that just said this about like how, or maybe it was into another podcast about Glee, I don't know. Somebody said something like where it was, we've seen them try to like make us like the new kids over and over again, like twice before, and it doesn't always work. So would it work for an entirely new generation of kids? I think it's worth a shot. I don't know. I mean, I'm excited at the prospect of Glee again, because it is a wacky show and there's so much material that's happened over the past 10 years, not even just musically, but just in the world that they could chew on. So, hey, a check is a check for these actors. So if they get paid.

[3:02] Allyson Alamode: And you would do it too for a check.

[3:04] Aman Adwin: Exactly. Well, the thing that's like coming to mind now that I'm thinking of is that like, Ryan has, I feel like when Glee was on, he had two young children. Am I making that up? He has children. Am I making that up?

[3:18] Allyson Alamode: We're just saying.

[3:19] Aman Adwin: Yeah. And I, and I know that Brad is co-parenting with Goop, like Apple and such.

[3:28] Allyson Alamode: I forgot about that.

[3:29] Aman Adwin: Ryan has three kids.

[3:31] Allyson Alamode: Three kids that I'm like, they were not of teenage age. He couldn't have written toward what kind of.

[3:38] Aman Adwin: No, they were born during Glee. So one of them is born in 2012.

[3:38] Allyson Alamode: One of them is born in 2014.

[3:44] Aman Adwin: And one of them is born in 2020.

[3:48] Allyson Alamode: Oh, wow.

[3:49] Aman Adwin: So in the season three, season five, and the resurgence of Glee.

[3:56] Allyson Alamode: Right.

[3:57] Aman Adwin: So I'm just thinking that they have, they have newfound perspective.

[4:02] Allyson Alamode: I just feel like, like writing toward teenagers. Since Glee has gone off the air, there have been like so many things that are like not quite Glee. I mean, Smash, I feel like aired in tandem with Glee. Then they tried Rise, which I kind of want to rewatch and it's impossible because it's not available anywhere.

[4:17] Aman Adwin: Rise.

[4:21] Allyson Alamode: I never got to see. That's the one with Amber Riley, right?

[4:24] Aman Adwin: No, Rise is with the How I Met Your Mother and Moana.

[4:30] Allyson Alamode: Oh, that's right.

[4:31] Aman Adwin: What was the How I Met Your Mother and Moana? What are you talking about?

[4:35] Allyson Alamode: Ted Mosby. Okay, so basically Rise.

[4:38] Aman Adwin: Oh, and you're talking about Auli'i.

[4:40] Allyson Alamode: Thank you. Auli'i. So close.

[4:43] Aman Adwin: Yeah, Auli'i Cravalho.

[4:45] Aman Adwin: So Rise was 100% Glee's re-invented nachos because they were like, Josh Radner, Ted Mosby is basically Mr. Shoe. I want to put on Spring Awakening and all the parents are like, this is so inappropriate. And then the first episode you find out someone's pregnant, someone's gay. It was literally Glee, but way more dramatic with the comedy stripped out of it.

[5:08] Allyson Alamode: And I didn't finish the season, but I did watch quite a few episodes, but it was not good, but neither was Glee at some point.

[5:17] Aman Adwin: I don't know if I said this in a previous episode, but someone brought up to me, a friend of mine, Gleek Adjacent was like, they said that rebooting Glee, like rebooting other franchises, it's like, you kind of want the sanctity of the original media to be preserved because it was so good. But as they were explaining that as Glee went on, it was already not good.

[5:46] Allyson Alamode: So it's like rebooting something that already-

[5:47] Aman Adwin: Except for season five, the New York era. I will always stand on that 10 toes down.

[5:47] Allyson Alamode: I will always stand on it.

[5:56] Aman Adwin: That's very, yeah.

[5:58] Allyson Alamode: Good? Like objectively good?

[6:01] Aman Adwin: Yes. Yes. I loved it.

[6:03] Allyson Alamode: Okay.

[6:05] Aman Adwin: You're saying like favorite string of episodes for you of the series?

[6:09] Allyson Alamode: Well, I don't know if I'll go that far.

[6:12] Aman Adwin: But people collectively-

[6:13] Allyson Alamode: But it's a highlight.

[6:14] Aman Adwin: I think people lump that part of it in with saying that the end of Glee was kind of shitty.

[6:20] Allyson Alamode: And I was like, well, no, there was a nice pocket for me, at least.

[6:23] Aman Adwin: But I was like, this is good. I like this.

[6:24] Allyson Alamode: You know, I'm talking shit, but I go hard for season six.

[6:28] Aman Adwin: Like it's entertaining.

[6:28] Allyson Alamode: I'm not saying it's like, I'm so entertained and I like it. I didn't say it was good.

[6:35] Aman Adwin: Well, that's interesting that you like the season five New York era, because I feel like that vibe is going to be the reboot from what I understand.

[6:44] Allyson Alamode: Like where it's like we're going to be catching up with these pre-existing characters and seeing like what they're up to.

[6:51] Aman Adwin: I want to see them get humbled so bad. I hated the fact that the series finale ended with all them being successful.

[6:58] Allyson Alamode: Yeah, but I feel like Glee already had a reboot written into it because of the rebranding in the New York era.

[7:04] Aman Adwin: That was like pretty almost a reboot in itself.

[7:07] Allyson Alamode: And I feel like we are in an era like post-COVID where everything is a reboot.

[7:12] Aman Adwin: We are nostalgia farming.

[7:14] Allyson Alamode: And that's what makes the money.

[7:16] Aman Adwin: Because like look at it with, oh my God, Descendants.

[7:19] Allyson Alamode: Like they had like Brandy and Paolo Montalban because they're Cinderella and the Prince.

[7:24] Aman Adwin: Like they're really going to try and get the nostalgia and the cameos and the cute little guest stars where they can.

[7:31] Allyson Alamode: And aren't they like, with Descendants, like Darren Criss is in it playing like Jiminy Cricket now.

[7:35] Aman Adwin: He is?

[7:36] Allyson Alamode: Wait, wait, wait a minute.

[7:38] Aman Adwin: Wait a minute.

[7:38] Allyson Alamode: This is the first.

[7:42] Aman Adwin: Andrew.

[7:43] Allyson Alamode: Let me see this.

[7:44] Aman Adwin: Let me see this.

[7:46] Allyson Alamode: Yes, yes.

[7:48] Aman Adwin: He's going to be playing Jiminy Cricket in the Descendants spinoff called Hidden Heroes.

[7:53] Allyson Alamode: Oh my God.

[7:54] Aman Adwin: Y'all going to make me watch all the Descendants now?

[7:58] Allyson Alamode: So like they're really, they're scraping the bottom of the barrel of these like Disney characters that are like, hey, let's really unpack Jiminy Cricket. You know?

[8:07] Aman Adwin: Yeah.

[8:07] Allyson Alamode: Well, okay.

[8:08] Aman Adwin: Oh yeah, let's dive into his.

[8:10] Allyson Alamode: What's Jiminy Cricket's conscience?

[8:13] Aman Adwin: What's his trauma?

[8:16] Allyson Alamode: Oh my God.

[8:18] Aman Adwin: Well, okay.

[8:18] Aman Adwin: And I think people are starting to realize, or not starting to realize, but like Gleeks have some shooters.

[8:24] Allyson Alamode: So like the Glee alumni, like you put them in anything and it's going, like people are going to watch it and everyone's going to be taught.

[8:30] Aman Adwin: And like, whether they like it or not, the headline is going to be like Glee's so-and-so is in this, even if they want to completely like remove themselves from that.

[8:41] Allyson Alamode: So like now everyone is capitalizing.

[8:44] Aman Adwin: I'm even thinking about like a Grant Gustin that it's like, I feel like he capitalized, like he was in like what? Like six episodes?

[8:53] Allyson Alamode: And he's still kind of like, it's still, I know he's the Flash, but it's like.

[8:59] Aman Adwin: But people, I feel like we're going up for him in the Flash more than Glee.

[9:04] Allyson Alamode: Maybe I'm tripping, but like, even when I saw him on Broadway, even everyone was like the Flash, the Flash, the Flash.

[9:09] Aman Adwin: And I'm over here wearing my Warbler's pin at stage door.

[9:12] Allyson Alamode: Like he's a Warbler, Warbler first.

[9:16] Aman Adwin: Yes.

[9:17] Allyson Alamode: Once a Warbler, always a Warbler.

[9:19] Aman Adwin: Right, right.

[9:22] Allyson Alamode: Sorry, go ahead, Andrew.

[9:22] Andrew: No, no, no. I was going to say, I feel like there's some people who were on Glee that like maybe weren't trying to like use that.

[9:27] Aman Adwin: And then there's people who obviously were on Glee and they want to ride that into the ground.

[9:31] Allyson Alamode: And you know what? Why not?

[9:32] Aman Adwin: That's what's going to be, you know, Josh Tussman comes to mind.

[9:37] Allyson Alamode: I mean, there's certainly a, there's a plethora of characters.

[9:41] Aman Adwin: Yes.

[9:42] Allyson Alamode: There's so many characters that they can, that they can choose from to either bring back or whatever they want to do.

[9:48] Aman Adwin: I do question, like, because, you know, we, I heard you guys put together the list of like who the 10 were that Ryan called.

[9:57] Allyson Alamode: And obviously, Lea Michele is on the list.

[9:59] Aman Adwin: And, you know, obviously, 2020 was six years ago at this point.

[10:03] Allyson Alamode: But I do wonder, like, are some of the relationships still in good standing with some of these actors considering all of the drama?

[10:12] Aman Adwin: It's funny that you say that, because I feel like, like, it was very rocky. And then somehow we're starting to find our way back a little, like, very like breadcrumbs.

[10:21] Allyson Alamode: Like, oh, like, I forget who it was. They're like, oh, so-and-so is following each other now.

[10:26] Aman Adwin: Like, oh, maybe they left a little heart in the comments section.

[10:29] Allyson Alamode: The headline is that Lea is following Jenna and Kevin now.

[10:32] Aman Adwin: Right.

[10:32] Allyson Alamode: And so I'm like, okay, we're not like besties. We're not going to get to where we were in 2012.

[10:37] Aman Adwin: But, you know, we're building a rapport.

[10:39] Allyson Alamode: Maybe for that check.

[10:41] Aman Adwin: Maybe for that Ryan Murphy.

[10:43] Allyson Alamode: I could be besties for a check now.

[10:45] Aman Adwin: You know what? We could be besties for the right amount.

[10:49] Allyson Alamode: But, you know, what if they go the Degrassi route, shout out to Patrick, where they introduce somebody who's somebody's, well, they did that already, somebody's sibling.

[10:58] Aman Adwin: That's why Glee has already built in a reboot to itself.

[11:02] Allyson Alamode: So, like, that's why I'm having trouble coming up with things.

[11:04] Aman Adwin: Because any, like, all bets are off.

[11:06] Allyson Alamode: Because Glee's already done it.

[11:07] Aman Adwin: Whatever, like, we think they're going to do, they've already done.

[11:12] Allyson Alamode: I just want them, like, if they're going to do it, I think the potential for success, I think, is pretty massive.

[11:16] Aman Adwin: I think a lot of people found Glee during 2020.

[11:22] Allyson Alamode: A lot of younger people found Glee during 2020, which sounds crazy.

[11:26] Aman Adwin: Because, like, we're not even that old.

[11:28] Allyson Alamode: Insane to me.

[11:28] Aman Adwin: No, every time someone says it on your podcast or in your comments, like, oh, like, I was three years old when Glee aired.

[11:28] Allyson Alamode: I was three.

[11:37] Aman Adwin: It's like, damn.

[11:40] Allyson Alamode: I do worry a little bit, like, speaking of that age bracket, I do worry a little bit about, because I tend to think that Ryan and the rest of the team sort of, like, had their finger on the pulse of, like, what song should I choose?

[11:52] Aman Adwin: Yeah, some of them were, like, a little bit put on.

[11:54] Allyson Alamode: Like, they were like very, like, you know, like, oh, this song just, like, hit the number one.

[11:57] Aman Adwin: So, like, let's do it on Glee.

[11:58] Allyson Alamode: But I think for the most part, the song selection was pretty good.

[12:02] Aman Adwin: And they did a good job, at least in the earlier seasons, of learning how to shoehorn these songs into the plot in a pretty decent manner.

[12:10] Allyson Alamode: So I'm, like, some of these newer age songs are, like, I don't know, like, pop is not what it used to be.

[12:16] Aman Adwin: So I'm, like, I don't, is this going to work?

[12:20] Allyson Alamode: Are the kids going to, like, appreciate it being reimagined this way?

[12:22] Aman Adwin: I don't know.

[12:23] Allyson Alamode: Well, you made a good point on one of your previous episodes where you're, like, I hope they don't just stick to the current songs.

[12:26] Aman Adwin: Like, there are still older songs that could be done justice.

[12:32] Allyson Alamode: And it's so funny because when I think about songs that they did or, like, the artists that they were paying tribute to, in Glee, canonically, Mr. Shoe says, oh, I found a Journey song we haven't done yet.

[12:45] Aman Adwin: And they never did Lights.

[12:47] Allyson Alamode: Like, I mean, that's a very-

[12:49] Aman Adwin: They did what?

[12:50] Allyson Alamode: They did four in total?

[12:52] Aman Adwin: But, like, it was Any Way You Want It, Don't Stop Believing, times five.

[12:59] Allyson Alamode: Yes, but still-

[13:00] Aman Adwin: Love, Intentions, Squeezing.

[13:02] Allyson Alamode: Yeah.

[13:02] Aman Adwin: And Faithfully.

[13:04] Allyson Alamode: But, like, I love the song Lights.

[13:08] Aman Adwin: When the lights go down in the city.

[13:10] Allyson Alamode: Oh, my God.

[13:11] Aman Adwin: That's, like, one of their big ones.

[13:13] Allyson Alamode: And then also for Britney, they never did, like, Sometimes.

[13:17] Aman Adwin: Yeah.

[13:18] Allyson Alamode: They did Every Time, but they didn't do Sometimes.

[13:20] Aman Adwin: Right, they didn't do Sometimes.

[13:22] Allyson Alamode: And then I feel like there was one more that I was, like, hello?

[13:24] Aman Adwin: They didn't do Lucky, which is, like, right there.

[13:26] Allyson Alamode: Oh, that's the one.

[13:27] Aman Adwin: So I feel like they could even pay tribute-

[13:29] Allyson Alamode: Like, if they wanted-

[13:30] Aman Adwin: There's ways to pay tribute to the original series by doing songs, like, oh, yeah.

[13:34] Allyson Alamode: Like, you know, pay, like, Britney.

[13:36] Aman Adwin: And then it's, like, a song that they didn't do, you know?

[13:39] Allyson Alamode: Yeah.

[13:41] Andrew: Exercise time. What is the number one song from the past 10 years that you would like Glee to cover off the top of your head?

[13:53] Aman Adwin: Oh, my God. I've thought about so many of these in passing. And now I'm, like, blanking.

[13:58] Allyson Alamode: Number one song.

[13:59] Aman Adwin: Like, we want-

[13:59] Allyson Alamode: Because I feel like there's songs that, like, would just fit.

[14:02] Aman Adwin: Like, we bidded, no pun intended, Beating a Dead Horse, Pink Pony Club.

[14:06] Allyson Alamode: Like, will fit, you know?

[14:08] Aman Adwin: That's-

[14:09] Andrew: And that's the end of the episode. That's the end of the episode, for sure.

[14:12] Aman: That's a good, like, I mean, uh...

[14:17] Allyson: I feel like, um, Quinn's voice, really, every time I listen to Olivia Deen, I'm like, Quinn on the track.

[14:24] Aman: Oh yeah, mm-hmm.

[14:26] Andrew: Okay, Allyson, you're giving me a face that you do not agree with.

[14:29] Allyson: No, at first, okay, I think she would sound better on an Olivia Deen than she does on her Motown joints, because I cannot stand them.

[14:37] Aman: I think that Olivia Deen is, like, kind of, like, Motown-adjacent, right?

[14:40] Allyson: But it's more soulful in her lower register, and I just, like, her and Diana Ross, it's oil and water to me. I do not like that. Remember when I told you I would vote out that song?

[14:50] Andrew: Yeah, you keep me hanging on.

[14:52] Allyson: I hate it. So, I may be inclined to agree. I was thinking, like, what's the Barbie song? That would be, like, all the enjoyment!

[15:07] Aman: Yeah, that's a good one. That actually did cross my mind, like, two seconds ago. That one, there's, like, and even some of, like, these larger acts that, like, we've missed so much of their content, like, there's so much Beyonce content, like, I mean, come on, like, there's Lady Gaga content out there.

[15:25] Allyson: Which is exactly why they need to start, because she has been so much more liberal with allowing her music to be used in other, like, TV shows and stuff these days. Like, back then, she was so, like, she would wrap that shit up in a vote. Now, she's just like, everybody can have it. Everybody, like, anybody who wants it can have it. So, like, yes, dive into that, like, give me some more of these, like, these Miss Gaga stuff that we've missed a lot of. Bruno these days. Oh, my God, Amber Riley singing Kehlani's Folded. Oh, my God, injected into my veins right now. Like, oh, there's so much. There's so much. There was something I mentioned on my previous episode, and I couldn't, it was like, I think it was like, Amber and Kevin, I was like, oh, Amber and Kevin should sing something. I don't remember what it was. But I do remember there was an AI version of it. Okay, and then what it is.

[16:18] Aman: Oh, yeah. Oh, my God. And why did it sound so good? It sounded, unfortunately, so good.

[16:27] Allyson: Unfortunately, it sounded so good. And then, okay, you know, I have to always bring up my little show tunes because, like, Hamilton would probably be there. Like, I feel like anything that we can take out and, like, revamp would probably be, like, helpless to satisfy. That's like, you know, maybe wait for it.

[16:48] Aman: I've maybe said this before, but my number one Hamilton song, I feel like no one's talking about this. Say no to this.

[16:56] Allyson: That, no.

[16:57] Aman: That one?

[16:58] Allyson: Andrew, Andrew.

[16:59] Aman: Are people saying this?

[17:00] Allyson: I love her. No, I'm saying this. I love her so bad. Like, her vibe. I'm like, she's my problematic fave. Like, 3000%. And every time I'm like, I really love Say No To This, people like side-eye me. And I'm like, okay, look, look, you shouldn't have made it such a banger.

[17:16] Aman: It's pro-cheating. Yeah.

[17:18] Allyson: Yeah. And I'm like, it's so good. And that would be a really good, I mean, like, I'm really trying to think.

[17:26] Aman: I always, like, when I, like, close my eyes and I listen to Say No To This, I'm thinking season five, Jake, Marlee, and Brie. There's something there.

[17:30] Allyson: There's something there.

[17:38] Aman: There's something there. Yeah.

[17:39] Allyson: Instead of a reboot, let's, like, just rewrite the episodes we didn't like.

[17:45] Aman: Can you just get into the studio and sing Say No To This, please?

[17:48] Allyson: Well, okay. I posted a TikTok that you didn't see for several weeks when I was talking about the Glee boot.

[17:55] Aman: Because I'm not on that TikTok anymore.

[17:56] Allyson: It's okay. It's okay. Sometimes when I post stuff about Glee, I'll only post it on TikTok and not on Instagram because, like, I do have people that, like, know me personally. And I'm like, I don't think they care. I don't know. Whatever. But sometimes if I talk about Glee, I'll only post it on TikTok. So I made a TikTok saying, like, what I've been saying for years, like, oh, I'm manifesting this number where it's, like, Beth Grown Up and it's Waitress and her and Quinn are duetting and whatever. And then, but, you know.

[18:22] Aman: Oh, my God. There's so much stuff. There's so much. There's so much. Oh, my God. I didn't think about Dua Lipa. Like, there's so much Dua Lipa stuff that they could get into.

[18:30] Allyson: Doja.

[18:31] Aman: Doja.

[18:32] Allyson: Doja.

[18:33] Aman: The past 24 hours I've been really liking. This is, like, maybe I'm, like, late to the game with this one. But, like, I think it's Dua Lipa at Royal Albert Hall when she does training season. And it's, like, the way the orchestra goes.

[18:46] Allyson: The orchestral version of it all.

[18:48] Aman: Yeah. It's like, need someone to hold me close. It's so good.

[18:51] Allyson: Yes.

[18:52] Aman: I feel like that's, like, Sue with the Cheerios. It's not Sue singing. But, like, I think that it's, like, the Cheerio number. But when they're all, like, training, it's, like, new.

[19:02] Allyson: What fits directly into Glee, which pretty much is Glee, Dear Evan Hansen.

[19:07] Aman: Dear Evan Hansen. 100%.

[19:09] Allyson: I was going to ask, like, modern musicals, like, obviously, like, Hamilton is the one that comes to mind. But, like, Dear Evan Hansen is another one. Is there what other ones? Because they didn't do, like, a lot of, like, modern musicals when Glee was on the air.

[19:22] Aman: Right.

[19:23] Allyson: Six.

[19:24] Aman: Six is so plot heavy in their song.

[19:26] Allyson: I can see some femme fatales, maybe.

[19:28] Aman: Well, maybe, like, the ballad they could probably strip out. I'm just thinking, like, contextually.

[19:33] Allyson: That's the worst one, though.

[19:35] Aman: How?

[19:36] Allyson: I don't like that. What is that? Heart of Stone?

[19:41] Aman: You haven't listened to, like, Abby Mueller's version from the New York cast? And then the bonus track where they have the Understudies sing it in harmony?

[19:49] Allyson: I am not familiar, but I generally don't like the song.

[19:54] Aman: No, I always leave an episode with homework assignments and you haven't listened to the Broadway version.

[20:00] Allyson: What is it?

[20:01] Aman: It's Heart of Stone. It's, like, recorded live in New York or whatever. It's Saturday night. But they have the Abby Mueller version, which is very good. And then they have the bonus track on that album, which are the Standbys and Understudies, like, with the harmonies.

[20:17] Allyson: Oh, my God. I can understand why, because it is a snoozer. But the vocals. And also Jasmine Forrestberg. She's the original touring of that role. If you just find a slide with her, she'll sing you bold.

[20:30] Aman: Okay, I want to check this out, too.

[20:33] Allyson: I promise.

[20:34] Aman: Okay. I just like when I want to listen to Six, I want to jam. And that song is just, like, okay.

[20:40] Allyson: Well, okay. But if you're listening to, like, a ballad playlist, that should be on there.

[20:46] Aman: Okay, and that hits. Okay.

[20:49] Allyson: You're so right, though, Andrew, in that, like, Glee really didn't do a lot of modern musicals. And I think a large part of that has to do with, like, you know, like, they were obviously...

[20:58] Aman: It's still being on Broadway.

[20:59] Allyson: It's still being on Broadway, licensing, whatever have you. And, of course, that, you know, there's such a plethora of old school musicals that are so popular that you'd have so much to choose from. But now that some of these contemporary musicals are, like, now 10 plus years old, you know, there's some, like, even with the resurgence of Wicked, I wouldn't be surprised if they, like, redid another number, like, and they did the Ariana and Stukia version.

[21:20] Aman: They didn't do As Long As You're Mine.

[21:21] Allyson: As Long As You're Mine. They never did that.

[21:23] Aman: But I also think Glee was trying to paint, like, Broadway and theater in a certain way. Like, there were so many things that we've discussed at length, and even you with your podcast, of the things that have just gotten blatantly wrong. And, like, the way that they paint and have people picture what theater is like. And so integrating more modern kind of breaks that.

[21:43] Allyson: Oh, it was a beginning for me.

[21:44] Aman: It was the mold of what they're trying to, like, stereotype theater to be. So I feel like maybe in the Glee boot, if they're trying to be like, oh, look at how different theater is now. If that was, like, a message they were trying to, like, convey. Because they tried to make theater, make it seem like it was some nerdy thing. And then, like, oh, I'm a big star and a bright thing and all these things are, like, operatic songs, when that's really not the case anymore.

[22:07] Allyson: So I would be interested to hear.

[22:08] Aman: And there were, like, certain characters that, like, really didn't even, like, delve into the Broadway, like, catalog that much. Like, it was, like, you would expect, like, Kurt and Rachel to sing the Broadway show tunes. But, like, there were certain characters, like Quinn, like, never sang any, like, show tunes or anything.

[22:23] Allyson: But they had her sing in Motown.

[22:24] Aman: Oh yeah, she never did. Yeah, they had her sing in Motown and Michael Jackson.

[22:30] Allyson: Right.

[22:31] Aman: James Brown.

[22:32] Allyson: Aretha Franklin.

[22:33] Aman: Like, okay.

[22:34] Allyson: Anyway, any, any final notes about the Glee Boo? I just, like, I want to, I want to stream Glee, I want to stream new Glee cast covers for once.

[22:52] Aman: I do. I do. And I do, it does feel like one of those. Yes. It does feel like one of those shows where you do sort of, like, I mean, I don't know, maybe it's just I'm speaking to the choir here, like, as fellow Gleeks. But it does feel like a show that ever since it left, nothing has filled that space.

[23:12] Allyson: Oh, no.

[23:13] Aman: It was so hard. It was lightning in a bottle. And it just doesn't.

[23:16] Allyson: And they've tried. They've really tried.

[23:19] Aman: They did. They did. And it just, it doesn't stick. And I think that a show like Glee, as much as we want to critique Ryan Murphy for all of his fuckery, I think that a show like Glee really only works with somebody like him at the helm, because it's so wacky.

[23:32] Allyson: It's so all over the place. It starts off very structured and very, like, you understand what it is. And then it goes off the rails. And I think that you kind of need that kind of energy for a show like Glee. So I welcome more of it. I don't necessarily know if I need it to be Emmy winning again. I don't know if I need it to, like, be launching the careers of, like, these household names. I don't know if I need all that glitz and glam.

[23:56] Aman: I do want that.

[23:57] Allyson: I think I just need...

[23:58] Aman: I want to be, like, hyperfixated, almost like a Rachel Zegler kind of thing, where I'm like, I'm hyperfixated on this girl that is 10 years younger than me. You know what I mean?

[24:08] Allyson: Well, okay. I feel like you had touched on it in the episode with Alison, where, like, you know, the main part of Glee was incorporating, you know, current events. And with Ryan Murphy at the pen, you never know what the hell is going to come out of his mouth.

[24:28] Aman: And so I'm hoping, like, there are so many things to tackle. But what made Glee, like you said, lightning in a bottle, is they were becoming the first to do all these things. And it was so groundbreaking. And now, since then, things that were so groundbreaking are a little more mainstream. So I'm hoping it's not so heavy handed, and it's more about representation without beating... I'm not saying Glee was over the head.

[24:49] Allyson: Girl, nobody cares if you're gay, honey. They don't care.

[24:51] Aman: And it's kind of like, they can just be in it without, like, and this in it. Like, for example, oh my god, I just watched the first episode of the new Carrie series. And I was like, Josie Toda!

[25:03] Allyson: Oh, really?

[25:05] Aman: Yes! She is a bitch.

[25:07] Allyson: Oh, okay.

[25:09] Aman: She plays it so well.

[25:11] Allyson: Good for her.

[25:13] Aman: I was like, staring at her and I was like, why do I...

[25:17] Allyson: Why am I suddenly losing my breath?

[25:19] Aman: Ooh!

[25:21] Allyson: Ooh!

[25:23] Aman: They were wrong for having, what, like, an 11 year old in the studio doing that.

[25:29] Allyson: I loved it, though. She ate it up.

[25:31] Aman: I was watching it, like, on FaceTime with my friend, and I was explaining to them, like, oh, like, Josie Toda was on Glee, and they were like, as a child? And I'm like, I really don't have time to explain the context, but yes.

[25:48] Allyson: Because they were doing the math, like, that was a lot, like, because they're in high school, like, she's playing a high school student, so if they were on Glee 15 years ago, they were like, what do you mean? And I'm like, look, there was a child in the Glee Club, and that's all I'm going to say.

[26:02] Aman: And honestly, like, I don't even, like, what was the plot of having Myron and...

[26:08] Allyson: Myron is the superintendent's nephew.

[26:10] Aman: Son, or nephew, yeah.

[26:13] Allyson: Sue wanted to be on the superintendent's good side so she could be principal, so she's like, I'm enrolling him so Myron can be in the Glee Club.

[26:23] Aman: Yeah, he, like, wanted to be a star.

[26:25] Allyson: He wanted to be a star.

[26:27] Aman: Yeah.

[26:29] Allyson: I wish that Myron came a little bit sooner, I'll say.

[26:31] Aman: Yes!

[26:33] Allyson: Having an actual child in the Glee Club only for, like, the last five episodes of the series, I wanted more.

[26:39] Aman: I mean, if Season 6 had been the regular 22 episodes, we would have gotten it.

[26:43] Allyson: We would have seen.

[26:45] Aman: I feel like I brought this up in a previous episode, but I remember, like, on Glee Wiki during the Season 6 era, when Season 6 was coming out, someone was like, I love the new song, Human, by Christina Perri, and I really want Myron to sing it. And so every time I hear that song, I always think about Josie Toda singing that song, for better or for worse.

[27:10] Allyson: I will say, perfect use of Myron is Chandelier.

[27:14] Aman: Oh, yes.

[27:16] Allyson: As Ziegler.

[27:18] Aman: If you're gonna have a child in the Glee Club, that was, like, the perfect, oh my gosh.

[27:24] Allyson: Yeah.

[27:26] Andrew: So, let's get into Glacketing.

[27:29] Aman: Let's get into Glacketing.

[27:31] Andrew: Wait, Alison, do you have, oh, wait, let me reveal, because you did not listen to last week's episode yet, but let me reveal to you.

[27:35] Allyson: I didn't listen to last week's, and I think I only got, yeah, reveal the episode with Alison, and then last week's as well, to me.

[27:43] Andrew: So, Alison and Maggie's episode, it was Bohemian Rhapsody won against I Know Where I've Been, and then this was Contentious.

[27:55] Aman: No Air won against Happy Days Are Here Again, Get Happy.

[27:59] Allyson: I'm sorry?

[28:01] Aman: I was the deciding, no, I'm smiling.

[28:05] Allyson: No, no, I am.

[28:07] Aman: I was the deciding vote on that.

[28:09] Allyson: No Air has kind of been working for me in a lot of ways.

[28:13] Aman: Please speak.

[28:25] Aman Adwin: Duets is one of my favorite episodes of Glee. I've long, you know, been a supporter of thinking that it might be the best episode of Glee, in my opinion, because it's just such a perfect day-in-the-life snapshot of the New Directions. And the way that that episode ends, especially with Rachel consoling Kurt at the locker saying, you know, like, I know that you're lonely, but you're not alone. And then they sing that song together. And it's just like such a beautiful moment. And they sound so amazing on it. I just can't fathom anyone choosing a Chris Brown cover.

[29:04] Allyson Alamode: Oh, anyone? Anyone?

[29:12] Aman Adwin: I mean, no, it's fine. It's cute. But like, no. I was in my Finchel feels. People are really not even in the top 10 Finchel duets.

[29:22] Allyson Alamode: Okay, we talked about this in last week's episode. What is what is worse? What is what is the worst one for you then?

[29:31] Aman Adwin: I just can't stop loving you.

[29:32] Allyson Alamode: Oh, well, there's one that is objective.

[29:34] Aman Adwin: Well, I mean, with you, I'm born again.

[29:37] Allyson Alamode: Yeah.

[29:37] Aman Adwin: Wait, okay. I downloaded that audio and had it on my iPod because I kind of liked it. I liked it.

[29:45] Allyson Alamode: The way they layered. Vocally, it sounded, sonically, it's great.

[29:47] Aman Adwin: Yes.

[29:48] Aman Adwin: Um, um, is, okay. No, because there's, why is this on here? Freaking Google AI. We've got tonight.

[29:56] Allyson Alamode: We've got tonight. It's like there's other people in the duet, but they each sing like one line at the end.

[30:05] Aman Adwin: Oh, yeah, there's a Finchel duet that I know that I was never keen of. And I cannot think of what it was. I know it's season one.

[30:09] Allyson Alamode: You're probably thinking of faithfully.

[30:17] Aman Adwin: No, although I don't really care for that too much either.

[30:20] Allyson Alamode: Oh, okay. Finchel. Okay. If faithfully is a duet, then I don't really care for that either.

[30:26] Aman Adwin: If faithfully Finchel forever wiki is correct. Maybe I'm thinking of borderline.

[30:31] Allyson Alamode: Oh, it's on. Oh, I know which one I hate. Well, I don't. Okay, I don't hate it. It is low on the is smile.

[30:39] Aman Adwin: What is that?

[30:41] Allyson Alamode: Oh, smile is cute to me.

[30:41] Aman Adwin: Smile. But it's not. I don't I mean, just roots before branches even count. It says one is a is a Finchel duet.

[30:53] Aman Adwin: Yeah, I don't know. I'd have to sit with this. I don't I don't know if nowhere is the worst that I just don't know if I like I find the autotune endearing. I find them walking down the hallway with the fans. Classic. I find Quinn doing the angsty kind of like shoulder dance, watching them. Great. I just think it's like really compelling television. I think that yeah, it's a really difficult competition. And maybe if I was in a different headspace added, you know, for that competition, then I would have voted another way.

[31:24] Allyson Alamode: And that is fair. That's fair. These these songs catch us when they catch us. Okay. That is completely valid.

[31:33] Aman Adwin: Okay, and I voted in that poll. What did it look like? Do you have the Instagram results?

[31:38] Allyson Alamode: Yeah, um, let me find it really quick.

[31:40] Aman Adwin: Because there's no that's this isn't I just love I just love that duet between the two of them. I love it.

[31:47] Allyson Alamode: It's so good. I love that people have been putting episode to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, which is like the original the Glee version and the Cynthia and Ariana version.

[31:57] Aman Adwin: Yes. Okay, so um, uh, happy days are here again get happy. A lot of people turned turned up, came out to the polls for for this competition.

[32:09] Allyson Alamode: 1156 people voted for happy days are here again get happy and 695 people voted for nowhere.

[32:17] Aman Adwin: What is the percentage?

[32:19] Allyson Alamode: 62 versus 38.

[32:21] Aman Adwin: That's actually closer than I thought it was gonna be.

[32:23] Allyson Alamode: Right that 600 people are still 600 people, you know, so maybe we're not just living breathing human beings.

[32:31] Aman Adwin: A lot of the heavy lifting is that people are now would rather listen to that version than support Chris Brown. So like because it is amazing to that's the ultimate version now.

[32:42] Allyson Alamode: So like now they have a version to listen to that isn't like you know, unless he's getting real.

[32:48] Aman Adwin: Right, right, right. I can't believe it. I can't believe I'm sorry. People aren't listen, you're joining the choir.

[32:57] Allyson Alamode: What was the first one you said Bohemian Rhapsody?

[33:01] Aman Adwin: One against I know where I've been. That's tough. But I mean, yeah, obviously, no, no, no, no, no. Yeah, that needs to win.

[33:07] Allyson Alamode: No, obviously, yes. Yeah, the wackiness of that scene. Yeah, the just the all the character moments in that scene. And also like that was like the performance besides we got the funk when I was like, okay, yeah, I will definitely have Jonathan Groff's babies.

[33:29] Aman Adwin: Wait, in we got the funk. Is that the song? Or no, I'm thinking of what is it? I'm thinking of I'm not we got the funk. No, wait, what is that song called? It's in the funk episode.

[33:42] Allyson Alamode: Oh, another one bites the dust.

[33:44] Aman Adwin: There we go. Another one. I was like, I think they're watching that number. We got the now we get the funk.

[33:55] Allyson Alamode: Yeah. And then I wanted to get to this in the most recent episode, the first competition is like really maybe the hardest competition that we've had.

[34:03] Aman Adwin: That's okay. Hold on. Hold on. Okay. I'm not ready. I'm just gonna tell you the competition. You're gonna tell me what you would vote for to stir with love versus maybe this time.

[34:16] Allyson Alamode: Oh, no, my my brain knows what is true here.

[34:21] Aman Adwin: No, I you're taking out of my like, to start with love, I feel like is my sleeper. Like, I don't think I've ever spoken. I'm not enthusiastic enough about her as I should be because I hold her so close. I can't even think about the song. I'm tearing up like that song and the performance even watching it. It's so like, oh my god, that's what Glee was like and watch.

[34:44] Allyson Alamode: Yeah, no, exactly. And you're watching it live. And you're like, oh, maybe we're only at one season of at this point, we don't know. And they're all saying, Oh, maybe this will be the last episode I watch of this series.

[34:59] Aman Adwin: Right. And I listen, I'm a stream that I'm a to stir with love. streamer. Yeah, but I understand what needs to be done.

[35:12] Allyson Alamode: You know, you know, what would what would maybe I would have considered putting that lovely number over Kristin Chenoweth is if they had given Matt Rutherford a single or a solo.

[35:23] Aman Adwin: Yeah. And you know, if Matt Rutherford is in a number, I'm voting for it, honey. That's all you need to do. And then I'd be thinking about it. But I'm not I mean, come on. I mean, it's Kristin Chenoweth. She ate that shit up. Like, oh, it's just so Oh, it's Oh, but then at the same time, like, oh my god, I'm like, okay, if I if I voted for maybe this time, is that me voting in the Glee for dummies direction just because I know that it's more iconic because more people but sometimes it's good to be dumb, you know?

[35:53] Aman Adwin: Okay, wait, wait, wait, wait. So Amman, you're saying definitively, maybe this time would have gotten your vote?

[36:05] Allyson Alamode: Yes, it just it just does something to me like, in my gay little Shondos. I don't know. It just does something to me. And I yeah, not that to sort of love doesn't and I especially with Sue being in the back there.

[36:17] Aman Adwin: Oh, yeah, I think it does. I think it does more for me narratively speaking. But sonically speaking. No, give me Kristin Chenoweth. If it were the three of us right now, I would vote for to serve with love.

[36:34] Allyson Alamode: Okay, so do you want me to I now I'm revealing what one to serve with love one landslide.

[36:43] Aman Adwin: Oh, my god. Oh, I was like, I thought it was maybe this time.

[36:51] Allyson Alamode: No, I need to say something because this has been on my mind since the recording. I feel as though to start with love. I like literally, this past week, I was like, I think that I could like, and the podcast right now. I'm sounding crazy. I don't feel that way right now. I can end the podcast right now because I feel as though to start with love might be winner of the glock it to me. Like I'm telling you, I don't think we've been talking about it enough.

[37:24] Aman Adwin: Yes, we have not been talking about it enough. I think it's really, really great. I love that there's so many different voices on the track. I love that it's at the end of the first season, all 12 of the original members are there we get a little bit of will we get a little bit of Sue cry. Like it just does. I think it's so so beautiful. And I really think that dark horse vibes.

[37:44] Allyson Alamode: I was gonna say so I think to start with love even making it this far and winning that last competition kind of is what the glock it represents finding the best song on glee whether it's being discussed in round one and I mean, okay, I will be listening to the episode. So I'm sure I'll hear her history with the market. But you know, first the first girl that to start with love took out was Gangnam style.

[38:05] Aman Adwin: So I feel like this podcast puts more salt like it highlights songs that people haven't thought about in a very long time. And like, oh, yeah, that was really good. Like maybe, like you said, maybe when you were watching the series, you weren't in the even like, matured headspace, you were in whatever headspace. And now that so much time has passed, you're revisiting these songs. And people are realizing to serve with love is a heavy hitter and deserves to be here.

[38:35] Allyson Alamode: And I think that like, I we will get we will glock it. I do think that with a lot of glee songs, we're looking at the bells and whistles. We're looking at like, oh, how'd you do the song different than the original? How did you match this song up with another song? How did you like utilize like the set or the costumes and everything? But I think that like to start with love is so just boiled down what the show is and doesn't have those bells and whistles. But it's to the song's credit.

[39:03] Aman Adwin: So that's fair. I mean, I can't I can't argue there. I'm fine. Who was I didn't even get to see who was on the episode. It was Emily and Patrick. I am so excited to listen to it. And then the second competition was, I think that you'll understand what happened here. Run Joey run versus Mamma Mia. I think you'll understand.

[39:29] Allyson Alamode: You know what when you know what one I feel I think I know what I would vote. I think I had run Joey one. What I think I had one Joey one in one of my episodes. I think one Joey run one.

[39:42] Aman Adwin: Well, Mamma Mia, Joey one. It's a good cover. But I you know, I think it's read its course for sure. Especially if you're up against something like run Joey run.

[39:53] Allyson Alamode: Yeah. So okay, let's do it. Let's do a Galactic competition. See. Okay, I have the playlist up. And I you know, you ask us what we're manifesting sometimes. And my eyes go to to serve with love. And so because I didn't know I was like, Oh, I hope I get to watch that. And now I'm like, Well, at least it lives to see another day. Might see it another round. There are some shooters on this playlist. I'm nervous.

[40:15] Aman Adwin: Wait, what are you saying? What do you what do you like? Every act? I mean, not even like, protect. I'm just like, Oh, my, like, these are all heavy. I mean, hey, it's round four. But like, all these, there's okay. There's a couple that are like, you know, take it or leave it. I size baby. Sure.

[40:31] Allyson Alamode: More than one. Oh, you like Andrew. I we've had this conversation before. I don't mind her. She can go though.

[40:47] Aman Adwin: No, she's cute for what she is. Fine. Here comes the sun is fine. I think I've already had her before. And I think we're okay without her. So it's kind of good that we have some songs that I'm okay with letting go of here. But there's a lot that I don't want regarding Christmas songs, because Christmas is your bag. Christmas glee songs are your bag of mine. And now they're all gone. They're all gone.

[41:08] Allyson Alamode: But you know, but are you a Christmas wrapping head?

[41:15] Aman Adwin: Yes. Oh, yes. I was the Christmas song that made it the furthest was the last remaining song.

[41:22] Allyson Alamode: No, me and I agree with but I love that song. I don't agree with it being the last of the last batch in a Christmas though.

[41:29] Aman Adwin: Oh, my gosh. Oh, my god. They're all like flooding in my brain right now. Okay. Well, I mean, that would be up there. Okay, wait, while you think Andrew, I have I don't I have like, if you were to take like, you know how sometimes you have to take breaks from this podcast. If you were to take a holiday break and decided to do a holiday special, I think you could either do like a live stream or a Christmas glock it including the songs that were not on the show.

[42:06] Allyson Alamode: Well, that's that's a setup because there's a clear winner though. Because it's God rest you merry gentlemen. Why was I that is mean? That is Amber Riley. It's all of them. No, it is. It's really good track. Yeah.

[42:28] Aman Adwin: But I like the other one too. What's the one with Alex and Lindsay? Do you hear what I hear?

[42:28] Allyson Alamode: Do you hear what I hear? Yeah, that one's cute. I mean, Love Child is not a Christmas song, but the Christmas-ification of it with Glee is very fun. I also love...

[42:48] Allyson Alamode: I'm pulling them out. What is the name of the one? I like Do You Hear What I Hear. At the end of the season five one with the trio. Oh, that's Away in a Manger. I love that. I love that arrangement of that song. It's so beautiful. I've never heard anyone talk about that song. And that is a good one. No, it's a good... It's so good. It's so good.

[43:10] Aman Adwin: So let's... Are we ready to clock it? I'm ready. I'm scared. Wait, programming question. So when something gets eliminated at this point, there's no coming back?

[43:17] Allyson Alamode: There's no going back.

[43:23] Aman Adwin: Oh, okay. So this one feels the most... See, and I was over here like, okay, well, we can just vote back. Maybe Happy Ending? Maybe this time. Oh my god, sorry. Maybe this time is done. Okay. She's dead. Okay, we're looking at season three number. Season three has a lot of shit. Anything goes. Oh, oh, you know what this is? It's Shake It Out.

[43:54] Allyson Alamode: They cut something out at the end. Like they, they like cut the end of the song really short toward the end.

[43:58] Aman Adwin: Yeah. Yeah, there's lots of... That was gonna be the first thing that I said was that... I mean, there's plenty of songs like this on Glee, but this one in particular, I feel like deserved the full cut treatment because the vocal choices between the three of them that are just... It's one of those arrangements where it's like, you spent all this time making this beautiful arrangement to truncate that. This needed the full... I don't know why, like, you can really feel the splicing with it in this one.

[44:27] Allyson Alamode: Yeah. And that's why I always stream. This is such a... I stream a lot. Yeah. It's all those runs that Amber does, like, when you cut it, that was not supposed to go there. But yeah, it's just like, you messed up that run. What are you doing? I feel like I've definitely brought this up before, but I remember, because I was a big Glee wiki head, that was my way of discussing the show when it was going on. But I wouldn't partake. I would just observe. And I remember Glee wiki falsely reported that Shake It Out was going to be a Tina solo. And so I remember the first Listen Fridays, when the songs were released, then I was foaming at the mouth and I was like, oh my god, we haven't had a Tina solo in so long.

Let me listen to Shake It Out's release. I start listening. And I remember being pissed as fuck when I heard Naya's. This was me. Okay. I was like, maybe like 14 years old. But I really, I was hungry for a Tina song. And so I was so pissed when I heard Santana's voice at first. I was like, goddammit, she can't win anything. But no, I feel like they all really arrived for this. They all did their thing.

[45:47] Aman Adwin: One of my Gleek of the Week core memories is when you had What's His Face on this podcast.

[45:55] Allyson Alamode: That's Derek. And I cannot like just, I can't remember. That's the only thing I was thinking about was his like, recount of how he was not told the context of the number. So he looks like so happy in the back. And he's like, nobody told me and then when it aired, I was horrified. And so that's the only thing I can think about. It was so funny to watch. And I just love that Sugar and Britney are just there for the vibes, just here for a good time.

[46:24] Aman Adwin: Can we talk about this? Because I know that obviously there's so much to talk about with this that isn't Sugar and Britney. But like, the fact that like, they don't even have Sugar, like Heather Morris and Vanessa Lengie's even like, feigning that they're singing. What is that choice to like, not? Because they have like a bunch of songs where the people didn't actually go into the studio, but they're still like moving their mouths. Why are they not moving their mouths?

[46:54] Allyson Alamode: Because that's Vanessa Lengie's bag with all the trouble tones. She's not in the booth for any of the songs except for Survivor. So why would she not like it right now?

[47:02] Aman Adwin: I don't get it either. And also like, I feel like it would have been a nice sort of like, interesting character moment for Sugar. Because you know, the whole point of, you know, her character is like, oh, she can't sing. But I feel like there is like, supposed to be some level of improvement when you're working with Shelby Corcoran. You know what I mean? So I feel like her being there, just doing oohs and aahs is perfectly okay. I also think the same thing for Britney, who obviously has more vocal chops, and was a leading trouble tone. Like, just a couple of oohs and aahs. Like, I get the arrangement called for three voices. But they don't have to sing during the solo parts. Just give them the whole end of the song there. That would have been fine.

[47:45] Aman Adwin: Britney's voice, or Heather Morris's voice, does amazing for supporting vocals for me. I'm not a big fan of her like, solos. But when she's like, carries harmonies with other...

[47:57] Allyson Alamode: What do you mean?

[47:58] Aman Adwin: What song are you thinking?

[47:59] Allyson Alamode: So like, just like, off the top of my head, like, something stupid, her harmonies sound really good with Sam. Or like, more than words.

[48:03] Aman Adwin: More than words!

[48:03] Allyson Alamode: Her harmonies sound really good on Lancelot. Like, anytime that she is with another person, her vocals blend really well with whoever she's supporting, or whoever is with her.

[48:16] Aman Adwin: Wait, did Heather Morris go into the studio for Lancelot?

[48:21] Allyson Alamode: Oh, is it just Gwen and Santana?

[48:25] Aman Adwin: I feel like, maybe I'm wrong. I need to like, re-listen to like, Gwen and Santana.

[48:29] Allyson Alamode: Right. I mean, it very well could be. I'm just naming songs that she's in.

[48:34] Aman Adwin: No, but I agree with you in that she has a voice that's very like, you know, it's a glue voice that really helps everything come together. I can't believe that they didn't at least make a four-part. I mean, obviously, it sounds good as is. But knowing that of her and how Sugar doesn't sing at all, they could have at least included Heather, which is so strange.

[48:53] Allyson Alamode: Yeah. Obviously, when I think about this song, I'm also thinking about Dog Days Are Over. In between Dog Days Are Over and Shake It Out, that could be the competition at hand, potentially. But which one do you prefer?

[49:13] Aman Adwin: This one, I think, yeah. I think the emotional weight of it really lends itself and I think what I like the most about it, and this might sound a little counterintuitive, is that it's such an emotional breakthrough for Coach Beast, but it still leads to the exact same position that she was in before they started singing. And I think that is such an honest sort of portrayal of what abusive relationships are like. You know, sometimes healing, we all know, is not linear. And sometimes it takes people leaving, coming back, leaving, coming back, leaving to finally get the picture. And so I like that we can see her have this real honest moment with them and still it not being enough to shake it out. Sometimes it takes more than three out of five teenagers to sing a Florence the Machine song at you to get out.

[50:11] Allyson Alamode: For Dog Days, is that just, was that just like an end of, because I always get that confused with We Are Young because it's like, similar.

[50:19] Aman Adwin: The same sky backdrop.

[50:20] Allyson Alamode: Right. And so Dog Days, is it just, it was like Amber and Tina, I did it again.

[50:20] Aman Adwin: Amber and Tina.

[50:29] Allyson Alamode: Because they didn't sing in the competition that they won and that's why it was their solo.

[50:34] Aman Adwin: The unsung heroes of the competition.

[50:35] Allyson Alamode: Exactly, exactly. But what is that? Like, what was the sectionals? Regionals?

[50:42] Aman Adwin: That was sectionals. That was sectionals in season two. Yeah.

[50:45] Allyson Alamode: Okay. Yeah.

[50:47] Aman Adwin: So I mean, yeah, I mean, it is a beautiful song and the two of them sound great on it. But yeah, I don't know, man. I just think that this particular, and that one in particular wasn't, they didn't really gleify that one. They gleified this one, you know?

[51:01] Allyson Alamode: That's true. I will say though, revealing what I like between these two songs, I do like Dog Days a little bit more. I think that I prefer the, like, orchestra of the original Florence and the Machine, that I love that first note of the, don't regrets come back. I love that so much. Not to say that I don't, this cover still has like a special place in my heart, but I think I do prefer the original still. If that's okay to say.

[51:38] Aman Adwin: So this song was also covered on Smash.

[51:39] Allyson Alamode: It's perfectly fine to say.

[51:43] Aman Adwin: Oh, wait, how did they do it on Smash?

[51:44] Allyson Alamode: It was a, it was a Catherine McPhee solo, and she's singing, she's a wedding singer, so she's, or sorry, a Bar Mitzvah singer, and she's performing it, and it was fine. Like, I was like, oh, this is actually a good cover. But I mean, if I'm picking between the two, it's obviously going to be Glee, but it was, it was fine. But it was her by herself. And then also what comes to mind is that this song was originally supposed to be, You Know It, Love The Way You Lie. Do you know this lore?

[52:12] Aman Adwin: I do. Yeah.

[52:13] Allyson Alamode: Yeah, I mean, and you saying and bringing it back up, I'm just like, okay, as much as I would have loved to hear it, the context just is poor.

[52:22] Aman Adwin: They recorded it in everything.

[52:23] Allyson Alamode: Well, that's worse than Cell Block Tango.

[52:28] Aman Adwin: They just doubled down.

[52:30] Allyson Alamode: Right, like what the hell?

[52:32] Aman Adwin: Wait, but I think that they do, like, oh my god, I should know this. You guys should perform a number about women motoring their husbands for chewing gum.

[52:41] Allyson Alamode: How is that gonna help?

[52:43] Aman Adwin: No, literally.

[52:43] Allyson Alamode: Love The Way You Lie, like, there's two parts to it, right? I think that they were going to be doing the, right, they weren't going to be doing, like, the Eminem one.

[52:55] Aman Adwin: I mean, still, still.

[52:57] Allyson Alamode: But I have a friend.

[53:00] Aman Adwin: That's all right, because I like the way it hurts is insane.

[53:04] Allyson Alamode: That is crazy.

[53:05] Aman Adwin: Yeah.

[53:05] Allyson Alamode: Wait, but is the version that they were going to sing including that lyric?

[53:10] Aman Adwin: It's the chorus.

[53:13] Allyson Alamode: That's true, that's true.

[53:14] Aman Adwin: That's crazy.

[53:16] Allyson Alamode: I have a friend who's also friends with Jenna Auschwitz that has said, like, hey, they dropped a line to Jenna, like, oh my god, I would have loved to have heard the Love The Way You Lie. She sent it to her. So I do, there will come a day. I just, like, would be so afraid. I think that I would really disobey my trust with Jenna Auschwitz having that, because I would immediately need to share it with everybody that would love it as well.

[53:43] Aman Adwin: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[53:46] Allyson Alamode: So I think that was a good call not to do it. I think, you know, sometimes, like, again, like, Ryan Murphy, I think a lot of them, they had the pulse. But I think that there's sometimes, like, there is such a thing, even for Ryan Murphy, is laying it on a little too thick. And I just don't.

[54:06] Aman Adwin: And that was, right, that felt like a very Ryan Murphy move to be, like, Love The Way You Lie.

[54:11] Allyson Alamode: Yeah, it's about abuse.

[54:13] Aman Adwin: Right. No, they literally just take the title, and it just does every single time. And I mean, the song Colorblind comes to mind, like, okay.

[54:23] Allyson Alamode: Right.

[54:24] Aman Adwin: Oh, god, don't get me started on the song, but.

[54:27] Allyson Alamode: Do we have anything further to say about Shake It Out?

[54:30] Aman Adwin: I could see myself voting for her, but I could also, I mean, I could also.

[54:36] Allyson Alamode: There, yeah.

[54:37] Aman Adwin: There's a world where I might not.

[54:38] Allyson Alamode: I'm nervous for it, because I spent the summer of 2012 listening to that song on repeat. So 18-year-old Amon is nervous.

[54:49] Aman Adwin: I don't like, okay.

[54:50] Allyson Alamode: Interesting.

[54:51] Aman Adwin: Right. Andrew, what's happening with your face?

[54:52] Allyson Alamode: No, I just think that, like.

[54:54] Aman Adwin: Okay, so, Allyson.

[54:59] Allyson Alamode: Oh, god, why did I ask to come on this show? I should have just, like, left it alone.

[55:03] Aman Adwin: Recently, you were on a carousel.

[55:07] Allyson Alamode: Oh!

[55:08] Aman Adwin: Yes.

[55:08] Allyson Alamode: You make me feel like a natural.

[55:11] Aman Adwin: I just talked about this, Aaron, please.

[55:14] Allyson Alamode: Oh, my god, does this mean my TikTok gets put in the carousel?

[55:19] Aman Adwin: The TikTok gets in the carousel.

[55:20] Allyson Alamode: Okay, wait.

[55:21] Aman Adwin: Share screen.

[55:23] Allyson Alamode: Oh, my god.

[55:23] Aman Adwin: Wait, what are the odds that I get this song on my episode?

[55:26] Allyson Alamode: I just did this video.

[55:29] Aman Adwin: She sang for 24 hours straight.

[55:32] Allyson Alamode: No, I was like, wait, why do I not remember that, like, and then it's today.

[55:38] Aman Adwin: It goes from day to night, back to day.

[55:42] Allyson Alamode: Oh, my god.

[55:43] Aman Adwin: It's really iconic.

[55:45] Allyson Alamode: Oh, god.

[55:47] Aman Adwin: So, two initial thoughts for me. One of my favorite things in, like, music videos or whatever it is, like, is when, like, right after the number is, like, over or a dance break is over and the song is done, the artist just, like, walks off camera. I don't know what this is. So, something is so sickening about that to me.

[56:03] Allyson Alamode: That is.

[56:03] Aman Adwin: They just leave it all out there. Let me just continue my day.

[56:07] Allyson Alamode: Yeah.

[56:07] Aman Adwin: Yes, and the camera lingers and they just walk off like nothing happened.

[56:11] Allyson Alamode: It's like, oh, I live for that.

[56:13] Aman Adwin: Yeah.

[56:13] Allyson Alamode: And two, I love that this is just, like, so Amber focused or Mercedes focused because they could have easily, like, made this, like, a montage, like, putting little clips of, like, her and Sam being flirtatious together.

[56:36] Aman Adwin: She's singing about falling in love with Sam all over again, but I think it's also about falling in love with herself, being in New York, discovering herself. Yes, Sam makes her feel some things in her ladyloins, but I think her just being out on her own for the first time, doing what she loves, is also making her feel like a damn natural woman. I love that choice. So yeah, this number, oh my God, this is such a good one.

[57:05] Allyson Alamode: That's great. Allyson, what do you think?

[57:07] Allyson Alamode: I feel like I just haven't given the, like, I feel like when I think about this song, I think about the chorus, and obviously she's singing her ass off, but I just haven't sat and listened to it or watched the episode, like, from beginning to end, because like the end, when she's just going off, and it just, oh my God, it sounds, you know, that's what makes it different from the original, because I feel like, you know, Amber Mercedes always tends to do songs that are pretty faithful to the original, and then adds her little spin on it. I feel like, I mean, I do like your perspective, Iman, but it makes me think, like, how did they keep this song in after she put her foot down about the storyline changing, about, they were like, oh, well, she's gonna, like, give her virginity up to him, because I feel like this song seems more aptly placed if that was her decision, versus we know she's not going to.

I always assumed that, because Amber talked about years later that what you're saying is, like, that her Sam and Mercedes were going to have sex, but I always assumed that that was going to be, like, season finale, because this is, like, season, like, this is episode, like, 15 or something. We still got a few episodes left until the finale, but I think that they were, like, kind of, like, the way that Amber was, like, talking about, like, oh, like, the will they, won't they, because, like, for the, like, it's so frustrating to me as a viewer, the last, like, few episodes of the New York plot, the Sam and Mercedes plotline is, like, every episode, their plotline is, like, I want to have sex, no, we won't have sex, and then every episode is like that.

And then she's, like, let's sing about it, but then, like, the songs she's singing aren't necessarily, like, let's wait over. Okay, oh, that's another sleeper I love. But, like, I always just assumed that that was, like, and, like, Amber was disappointed, because then it was, like, the end of, like, this cycle of episodes, where it was, like, oh, she just gives in, and she does have sex. So I don't think that that's tied. I understand what you're saying, but I don't think it's tied to this. But I just feel like if it did go that way, then this song would make a little more sense contextually, not that, I mean, separated from the fact that she kills it, like, it's amazing.

[59:20] Aman Adwin: Yeah.

[59:22] Aman Adwin: I didn't know any of the lore that the two of you just dropped about that. I was not privy to that. So, like, I'm kind of happy that, like, my opinion was kind of, like, untainted by that sort of, like. But I agree with you, like, knowing that that does make more sense that, like, they were, like, well, we didn't already pay to read the Franklin's estate for this song, so you won't sing it whether you like it or not. Whether you're having sex with Sam or not, it's going to get sung. So, I mean, hey, I mean, how can you say no to an Amber Aretha cover? Like, she's going to eat it up every time.

[59:57] Allyson Alamode: But literally, like, two days ago, I had taken my son to the carousel in downtown San Francisco.

[1:00:05] Aman Adwin: Really? Oh, I thought you were going to say that one in New York.

[1:00:07] Allyson Alamode: No, I wish. But we were on the carousel, and I was like, I turned to him, I'm like, I'm just going to make a TikTok real quick. And then I filmed myself lip syncing to the song.

[1:00:17] Aman Adwin: And then for 24 hours, you sat on that carousel.

[1:00:19] Allyson Alamode: For 24 hours, you sang Natural Woman.

[1:00:23] Aman Adwin: Oh my, no, and so I-

[1:00:24] Allyson Alamode: Hey, mom, can we please go?

[1:00:26] Aman Adwin: Can we go home, please? I've heard this clip, this 15-second clip 37 times already.

[1:00:32] Allyson Alamode: And then I sent it directly to you, Andrew, and then I was like, you know what, I'm just going to post it on TikTok for fun. And now we pulled it, so I feel like-

[1:00:40] Aman Adwin: And here we go.

[1:00:41] Allyson Alamode: I know.

[1:00:42] Aman Adwin: Unfortunately, it isn't going to make me vote for it. Oh, who said that?

[1:00:46] Allyson Alamode: Oh, who did say that? I will say that I like this. I don't know if this is a hot take, but unlike Shake It Out, I do prefer this to the original. Is that a hot take? What do we think?

[1:01:00] Aman Adwin: Well, when we say the original, I'm not talking about Carole King, I'm talking about Aretha Franklin.

[1:01:05] Allyson Alamode: Right, right, right.

[1:01:09] Aman Adwin: I don't- I would say that's- Yeah, I would listen to this over the original, unfortunately. Sorry, Miss Aretha.

[1:01:16] Allyson Alamode: I don't know if I like it better than Aretha's, but I think- I've been listening to Aretha's for a very, very long time.

[1:01:23] Aman Adwin: Sure, yeah.

[1:01:25] Allyson Alamode: So I think it's very hard, but I think it's a beautiful, like, a beautiful tribute, but I don't know if I can ice Aretha out.

[1:01:33] Aman Adwin: Wait, what I wanted to say was this song was originally supposed to be-

[1:01:40] Allyson Alamode: Oop.

[1:01:41] Aman Adwin: Okay, Kate with the word- Kate with the gluzeum and everything.

[1:01:41] Allyson Alamode: The gluzeum.

[1:01:46] Aman Adwin: She has a bunch of wardrobe pictures and everything that reveal that they were going to be, like, originally going to be different songs and everything. This was originally supposed to be Love Like This by Faith Evans.

[1:02:02] Allyson Alamode: I thought you were about to say Natasha Bedingfield, and I was like, I love that song.

[1:02:07] Aman Adwin: Okay, so I- okay, so this is what- this is- okay, because I made, like, a little carousel, for lack of a better term, of all these songs, like, what they would have, like, looked like, and I did include- okay, because it says, Mercedes sings Love Like This on the carousel. We don't see who the original artist is in, like, the wardrobe photo description. I put Love Like This by Natasha Bedingfield, because that's the one-

[1:02:30] Allyson Alamode: And I think that's why I was like, I thought it was Natasha Bedingfield because you put it in my head that it was.

[1:02:36] Aman Adwin: Yes, but then I was, like, thinking about it more, and I, like, I looked up Love Like This by Faith Evans. I think it was- it was going to be Faith Evans.

[1:02:42] Allyson Alamode: I never knew there was a love like this before.

[1:02:42] Aman Adwin: Love like this before.

[1:02:47] Allyson Alamode: Like this before, right?

[1:02:47] Aman Adwin: That makes way more sense.

[1:02:50] Allyson Alamode: But I don't- I don't prefer it. I would have loved to hear her on the track, maybe in a different storyline, put somewhere else. But this makes more sense. But ooh, her- she would have sounded really good on that. Like, could you imagine, like, the backup singers doing that? Like, oh my god.

[1:03:04] Aman Adwin: I never knew there was a-

[1:03:06] Allyson Alamode: Yeah.

[1:03:09] Aman Adwin: Really great.

[1:03:10] Allyson Alamode: Love like this-

[1:03:11] Aman Adwin: And I feel like it goes with that vibe-

[1:03:12] Allyson Alamode: I want a mashup! Give me a mashup!

[1:03:13] Aman Adwin: When she's, like-

[1:03:14] Allyson Alamode: Yeah.

[1:03:16] Aman Adwin: Yeah, honestly, yeah.

[1:03:16] Allyson Alamode: But, yeah, what do I have to say? I think I know my vote.

[1:03:21] Aman Adwin: Wait, is this the song that- no, it has to be. It has to be the song that Aretha Franklin sings at the Kennedy Center Honors for Carole King, and she takes off her fur coat?

[1:03:31] Allyson Alamode: Yeah.

[1:03:31] Aman Adwin: Oh.

[1:03:32] Allyson Alamode: And that's another reason why I- because even-

[1:03:35] Aman Adwin: Wait!

[1:03:36] Allyson Alamode: Even if her voice was not what it used to be, oh my god.

[1:03:41] Aman Adwin: What? I'm- no, I'm not gonna say it. I'm thinking about the role in the deep cover. Anyway-

[1:03:48] Allyson Alamode: Hush!

[1:03:50] Aman Adwin: I heard Not in the Wild for the first time, like, years ago, and I was like, what? What is-

[1:03:54] Allyson Alamode: Everyone has bad days!

[1:03:57] Aman Adwin: I was shazamming it, like, what? Who is this? Who is this?

[1:04:02] Allyson Alamode: It's wild.

[1:04:03] Aman Adwin: The only thing that makes that-

[1:04:05] Allyson Alamode: I unironically stream. Like, I still, like-

[1:04:07] Aman Adwin: Stop. Stop it.

[1:04:08] Allyson Alamode: I will hear it out, and I'll be like, no. But I will say-

[1:04:12] Aman Adwin: The performance of that with Jimmy Kimmel? Was it Jimmy Kimmel that she performed that on?

[1:04:15] Allyson Alamode: I think that was, like, on, like- why do I feel like it was, like, David Letterman or something?

[1:04:15] Aman Adwin: David Letterman?

[1:04:20] Allyson Alamode: What?

[1:04:21] Aman Adwin: David Letterman or, like, Stephen Colbert or something? I don't know.

[1:04:24] Allyson Alamode: Sissy Houston in the background.

[1:04:26] Aman Adwin: Sissy Houston's in the back. Yes. Yeah. R.I.P.

[1:04:31] Allyson Alamode: Wait, but also, I wanted to make a connection between the Kennedy Center, where she drops the coat, because obviously, right before this performance, the Glee performance, she puts her coat into the East River.

[1:04:43] Aman Adwin: She does.

[1:04:44] Allyson Alamode: I don't know if the writers were doing anything. They were not working like that.

[1:04:49] Aman Adwin: She puts her coat, and it floats down. Aretha picks it up and brings it to the Kennedy Center.

[1:04:56] Allyson Alamode: Sister traveling for her coat.

[1:05:00] Aman Adwin: Yeah. We're understanding Glee like no one else has ever before.

[1:05:05] Allyson Alamode: We're using our big brain.

[1:05:07] Aman Adwin: Okay.

[1:05:08] Aman Adwin: You can't just throw things into the river.

[1:05:14] Allyson Alamode: Shake It Out versus Natural Woman.

[1:05:15] Aman Adwin: Unless- Iman, do you have anything final to say about Natural Woman?

[1:05:20] Aman Adwin: No, I think I've talked my fill. I'm just conflicted now.

[1:05:24] Allyson Alamode: Allison, you know your vote.

[1:05:25] Allyson Alamode: I do know my vote.

[1:05:28] Aman Adwin: And it is.

[1:05:29] Allyson Alamode: It is. Shake It Out, Shake It Out.

[1:05:33] Aman Adwin: Oh my gosh, you look so conflicted, Iman.

[1:05:37] Aman Adwin: I don't know. The more we talked about-

[1:05:40] Aman Adwin: I know. I know. That's literally how I feel, but-

[1:05:43] Aman Adwin: I was starting to get- I'm getting torn, but I'm thinking about 18-year-old Iman. Like, when I tell you guys, I would ride my bike to the sunset in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, listening to that song.

[1:05:58] Allyson Alamode: Wait, what song are you talking about? I'm sorry.

[1:06:00] Aman Adwin: Shake It Out.

[1:06:01] Allyson Alamode: Okay.

[1:06:03] Aman Adwin: Um, oh damn, okay.

[1:06:05] Aman Adwin: And it's also- but it's season five. It's my favorite-

[1:06:08] Aman Adwin: No, I had to lock in my vote because I would be you right now, because all this discussion was really making me sway, but I was like, let me just-

[1:06:14] Allyson Alamode: You wanted to get ahead of the discussion.

[1:06:14] Aman Adwin: Throw my vote and walk away.

[1:06:16] Allyson Alamode: Throw your vote into the river, yeah.

[1:06:18] Aman Adwin: With the coat.

[1:06:19] Allyson Alamode: Okay.

[1:06:21] Aman Adwin: Vote with the coat.

[1:06:26] Aman Adwin: With the best- we're choosing the best song of Louis. We're choosing the best song of Louis.

[1:06:32] Allyson Alamode: Okay, I will also go Shake It Out.

[1:06:36] Aman Adwin: But that was very, very hard because Amber did- I mean, she's on both songs, but her solo was kind of pulling- she was tugging my wig.

[1:06:46] Allyson Alamode: Okay.

[1:06:47] Aman Adwin: I was always going to go for Shake It Out. I just wanted to kind of see you struggle, I'm sorry.

[1:06:53] Allyson Alamode: Oh my god. He could have voted- he could have given a vote to Natural Woman if he wanted to.

[1:06:58] Aman Adwin: Yeah, I could have given it to Petey at that point, but no, I- no, like, Shake It Out, it's such a- it's beautiful. It's just so- the arrangement of those three voices, I think, is just top-notch, top-tier glee.

[1:07:14] Allyson Alamode: Some of its best work, the show, so I gotta give it to- and Amber's always going to eat it up.

[1:07:19] Aman Adwin: Yeah.

[1:07:20] Aman Adwin: That cover is gonna- it's gonna live forever, but yeah, Shake It Out was just that girl.

[1:07:26] Allyson Alamode: I just- no, I have, like- I'm tempted, like, to speak negatively about Natural Woman, just because I don't know why. But, like-

[1:07:35] Aman Adwin: Oh my gosh.

[1:07:36] Allyson Alamode: We're, like- Ain't No Way is the Better Aretha Mercedes cover, I think.

[1:07:42] Aman Adwin: Yes.

[1:07:43] Allyson Alamode: Um, I don't think that she's, like, doing anything different. Like, she's not doing any- it's not glee-ified, Natural Woman, either, whereas, like-

[1:07:51] Aman Adwin: Not even the end? Not even the end?

[1:07:53] Allyson Alamode: Oh, with the riffs and everything?

[1:07:55] Aman Adwin: Yes, which is the same thing, to be said, that she does in Ain't No Way.

[1:07:59] Allyson Alamode: Shake It Out.

[1:08:01] Aman Adwin: Well, no, also Ain't No Way.

[1:08:03] Allyson Alamode: Oh, and Ain't No Way, yeah.

[1:08:04] Aman Adwin: Like, it's just- that's just her signature thing, and that's what honestly sets some very- not cookie-cutter, but, like, copy-paste glee covers above- it's really Amber Riley doing the heavy lifting for a lot of those.

[1:08:17] Allyson Alamode: Yeah.

[1:08:18] Aman Adwin: Also-

[1:08:18] Allyson Alamode: Say, say, you're cute!

[1:08:20] Aman Adwin: What? Her audition? Is that not also Aretha Franklin?

[1:08:24] Allyson Alamode: Respect, yes.

[1:08:25] Aman Adwin: But that wasn't streaming?

[1:08:27] Allyson Alamode: No, not streaming.

[1:08:28] Aman Adwin: That's not in the Glocket?

[1:08:28] Allyson Alamode: No.

[1:08:34] Aman Adwin: Right, right. And was it crispy?

[1:08:37] Allyson Alamode: Um, okay.

[1:08:39] Aman Adwin: Okay, let's see the next competition.

[1:08:43] Allyson Alamode: Um, oh, okay.

[1:08:45] Aman Adwin: We're- we're continuing the New York vibe of the season four song.

[1:08:51] Allyson Alamode: Oh, he's in four, okay.

[1:08:53] Aman Adwin: Okay.

[1:08:54] Allyson Alamode: I really love this girl.

[1:08:57] Aman Adwin: And this is definitely a girl, not a boy.

[1:09:00] Allyson Alamode: Do not get it twisted.

[1:09:01] Aman Adwin: Oh my god.

[1:09:03] Allyson Alamode: Find her!

[1:09:04] Aman Adwin: I'm finding her.

[1:09:05] Allyson Alamode: I'm looking, I'm going through the playlist.

[1:09:07] Aman Adwin: Is it New York State of Mind?

[1:09:08] Allyson Alamode: It is New York State of Mind.

[1:09:10] Aman Adwin: I love this song.

[1:09:11] Allyson Alamode: I stream this.

[1:09:14] Aman Adwin: I, like, I, the word that is like coming to mind, and I hate that I'm saying this is so corny. It's like, it's so magical to me.

[1:09:24] Allyson Alamode: It's like, I love this.

[1:09:27] Aman Adwin: It's so perfectly done.

[1:09:30] Allyson Alamode: I'm obsessed with how they did this.

[1:09:30] Aman Adwin: Really, really special.

[1:09:34] Allyson Alamode: What do we think?

[1:09:36] Aman Adwin: So, back to the Glee boot.

[1:09:39] Allyson Alamode: I hope that, like, you know, in order to bridge the original series and the Glee boot, I hope that they are able to, like, do shots and songs like this first. Like, you know, like, I love this trope that Glee does, where they're singing about two different contexts, but it's still relevant, and it bounces back and forth. Maybe, or even, or maybe this time, or even, like, the duets, or, like, the, like, Defying Gravity, the D, like, you know, the D-offs in that way. And then, not the best one, but Bring Him Home. But I hope, I think that would be a great way to marry the two and pay homage to the original Glee. But, oh my God, they sound so good together. Like, I, this was so, this was an amazing way to start the fourth season on a high. Because, I mean, at that point, you're like, okay, like, we didn't know yet what would become. But we, it definitely gave us a little bit of, I would say, false hope that, oh my God.

[1:11:46] Aman Adwin: Do you know that they released, as the series went on, they released a solo version for each character?

[1:11:52] Andrew: I did not know that.

[1:11:53] Aman Adwin: If you only want to listen to Leah's version or Melissa's version, there you go.

[1:12:00] Andrew: I was actually going to ask. I thought they stopped by now because they did it with Define Gravity.

[1:12:04] Aman Adwin: No, it's not on iTunes. It was released on Tumblr or something.

[1:12:10] Andrew: What was the other one? Oh, Don't Cry for Me, Argentina. That was another one.

[1:12:10] Aman Adwin: Don't Cry for Me, Argentina.

[1:12:17] Andrew: I know they did it for Bring Him Home, but I didn't know they did it for this one.

[1:12:22] Aman Adwin: My headcanon is that when Marley...

[1:12:24] Andrew: Wait, sorry.

[1:12:25] Aman Adwin: Oh, yeah.

[1:12:26] Aman Adwin: Out Here on My Own. Out Here on My Own, you have a Rachel version and a Mercedes version.

[1:12:32] Andrew: Oh, okay.

[1:12:33] Aman Adwin: Sorry, I didn't even know.

[1:12:34] Aman Adwin: I'm going to have to listen to...

[1:12:35] Andrew: I've got to find it.

[1:12:36] Aman Adwin: Yeah, we've got to find this.

[1:12:37] Aman Adwin: Yeah, it's out there.

[1:12:38] Aman Adwin: My headcanon is that when Blaine turns and looks at Tina, they're in agreement that they have to send her to a crack house.

[1:12:46] Andrew: She starts singing and they're like, they're making...

[1:12:50] Aman Adwin: I finally get it.

[1:12:51] Andrew: Yeah.

[1:12:52] Aman Adwin: I finally get the feeling.

[1:12:53] Andrew: Maybe Rachel was cooking with something because...

[1:12:56] Aman Adwin: Do we still have that address at the crack house?

[1:12:59] Andrew: Yeah.

[1:13:00] Aman Adwin: Yeah.

[1:13:02] Andrew: Because that's the same...

[1:13:03] Aman Adwin: She won't even send her ass back.

[1:13:04] Andrew: Oh, yeah, duh. This is the new Rachel. So they're all trying to stand out and then here comes...

[1:13:09] Aman Adwin: They already call me maybe'd.

[1:13:10] Andrew: Yes.

[1:13:12] Aman Adwin: I just...

[1:13:13] Aman Adwin: There is a little bit of criticism with Lea Michele when it comes to these Barbra Streisand covers that sometimes you hear a little too much Barbra in there.

[1:13:23] Andrew: But it makes sense for Rachel's character because she's obsessed with Barbra Streisand.

[1:13:30] Aman Adwin: But I think...

[1:13:32] Aman Adwin: I don't know. Rachel's tone here is just so crystal clear and so powerful and just another example of like, yes, the girl is very high strung and very insecure in a lot of ways. But once you put her up there, you can't tell her anything.

[1:13:51] Andrew: And I've always...

[1:13:52] Aman Adwin: That's always been my favorite part of...

[1:13:54] Aman Adwin: Oh, my God. I'm about to get emotional. That's always been my favorite part of Rachel's character is that like...

[1:13:59] Andrew: I don't know where that came from.

[1:14:00] Aman Adwin: It's just like the...

[1:14:01] Andrew: No, you got it.

[1:14:02] Aman Adwin: The tenacity of it all and just being like, bitch, I don't care. Like, I'm crazy. I'm a little weird. But like, I know what I'm doing when I'm here. And so like, this number to me was just like a reintroduction after those first three seasons of her finding that power. And that's why I've always loved this number.

[1:14:20] Andrew: Well, okay. You saying that...

[1:14:21] Aman Adwin: Well, you saying that it was magic. And I'm just thinking about the context of everything going into this number. And like, she's bringing with her everything that she brought with her from the Glee Club. So obviously, it's going to be Barbra Streisand. And she obviously kills it. But then we have Marlee auditioning. And she says she's singing Billy Joel.

[1:14:41] Aman Adwin: Billy Joel.

[1:14:42] Andrew: And I love that. And it works out so perfectly. Because Marlee doesn't know who Rachel is. There's no...

[1:14:47] Aman Adwin: Like, Marlee isn't inherently into theater. She makes that very clear. So it was just such a...

[1:14:54] Andrew: And it's...

[1:14:55] Aman Adwin: I don't like...

[1:14:56] Andrew: It's perfect.

[1:14:57] Aman Adwin: I know.

[1:14:58] Aman Adwin: I'm getting emotional.

[1:14:59] Andrew: Those characters, as they say it. It's really, really...

[1:15:01] Aman Adwin: Yeah.

[1:15:02] Aman Adwin: It's so, like...

[1:15:03] Aman Adwin: I just love when you can, like, tell that they put, like, real thought into specifically, like, a song being selected. That it was, like... There was, like... It was a really inspired decision to have, like, Rachel singing this version of the song. Whereas Marlee, who is a new character that we're understanding that she has a different vibe.

[1:15:26] Andrew: Yeah.

[1:15:27] Aman Adwin: But they're still singing the same song. But different renditions. But it's the same track. It's just really, really great.

[1:15:32] Andrew: Oh, my God. And I love what you said, Amon. That, like...

[1:15:34] Aman Adwin: I'm remembering... Like, there's a great scene between Rachel and Mercedes in the final season. Where, like, Rachel's, like, getting down on herself. And she's, like... They're all going to, like, laugh at me, essentially. Like, if I, like, try to, like, go and get what I want. And Mercedes, like, says, like...

[1:15:55] Aman Adwin: Yeah, like, no one is, like, laughing at you when you're, like... When you're up on stage doing your thing. Like, you know how to do that. And I just think that, like, that speaks so highly of, like... The things that, like, we can all do. That it's, like... You know, like, we can... When we really set our minds to something.

[1:16:12] Andrew: Yes.

[1:16:13] Aman Adwin: Like, we got it. And it's, like, not about these outside...

[1:16:16] Andrew: No.

[1:16:17] Aman Adwin: Perspectives.

[1:16:18] Andrew: Yeah.

[1:16:19] Aman Adwin: Oh, yeah. I just...

[1:16:21] Aman Adwin: Oh, damn. What is this going to be paired up with?

[1:16:24] Andrew: I don't know.

[1:16:25] Aman Adwin: And that's what it really is. Because...

[1:16:28] Andrew: Oh.

[1:16:32] Aman Adwin: Any final things to say?

[1:16:34] Aman Adwin: I'm nervous.

[1:16:38] Aman Adwin: Also, shout out to Opie Goldberg.

[1:16:40] Andrew: That's my girl.

[1:16:41] Aman Adwin: Yes, Carmen Thibodeau.

[1:16:42] Andrew: Oh, this is...

[1:16:43] Aman Adwin: This is crazy.

[1:16:45] Andrew: Oh, my God. Stop it.

[1:16:48] Aman Adwin: This is a crazy competition.

[1:16:50] Aman Adwin: This could go either way, I think.

[1:16:52] Andrew: Oh, you're going to know exactly what it is.

[1:16:56] Aman Adwin: The song here is Four Minutes.

[1:17:01] Andrew: Remember when Mercedes and Kurt used to be besties? Remember that?

[1:17:03] Aman Adwin: Remember when Mercedes and Quinn used to be besties? Remember that?

[1:17:06] Andrew: Yeah. Remember that? When she was there for the birth of that damn child?

[1:17:11] Aman Adwin: For the birth of Beth. Bastard child.

[1:17:16] Aman Adwin: Can I start by saying...

[1:17:18] Aman Adwin: I think I know my vote.

[1:17:20] Andrew: I know my vote.

[1:17:23] Aman Adwin: Amon, do you know your vote?

[1:17:25] Aman Adwin: I know my vote.

[1:17:26] Andrew: Okay.

[1:17:27] Aman Adwin: We all know our votes.

[1:17:29] Andrew: Okay. I will say, I feel like even...

[1:17:32] Aman Adwin: It had to have been on whatever last episode I was on. We were talking...

[1:17:36] Andrew: Because what was the last competition?

[1:17:38] Aman Adwin: And I was like, I don't get her.

[1:17:40] Andrew: I was listening to the episode where this got pulled. And I was like, I don't get her.

[1:17:42] Aman Adwin: Wait.

[1:17:46] Andrew: The last four minutes was in the Glackett? Is that what you're saying?

[1:17:49] Aman Adwin: The last...

[1:17:51] Andrew: Wait, what are you asking?

[1:17:52] Aman Adwin: Yeah. So, like, what was the...

[1:17:54] Andrew: Yeah.

[1:17:55] Aman Adwin: What is her competition?

[1:17:56] Andrew: So, this was against my man last round.

[1:17:58] Aman Adwin: And won against my man.

[1:17:59] Andrew: Exactly.

[1:18:00] Aman Adwin: Exactly.

[1:18:01] Andrew: Right.

[1:18:02] Aman Adwin: Right.

[1:18:03] Andrew: And I was like, you guys...

[1:18:04] Aman Adwin: And then I think with my grievances, I was like, you're insane.

[1:18:07] Andrew: You're...

[1:18:08] Aman Adwin: Yeah.

[1:18:09] Andrew: That doesn't...

[1:18:10] Aman Adwin: What are you talking about?

[1:18:11] Andrew: What are you talking about? My man is always going to win against Four Minutes for you?

[1:18:15] Aman Adwin: Wait, what are you saying?

[1:18:16] Andrew: Yeah. This isn't...

[1:18:18] Aman Adwin: Yeah.

[1:18:19] Andrew: I don't like Four Minutes.

[1:18:20] Aman Adwin: This is not...

[1:18:21] Andrew: I don't understand her.

[1:18:22] Aman Adwin: I don't get her at all.

[1:18:23] Andrew: If I was on that episode, I would have had to shoot somebody.

[1:18:26] Aman Adwin: Right.

[1:18:27] Andrew: No.

[1:18:28] Aman Adwin: No, Aman. When I listened to the episode and I realized which way it was going, I had to stop walking. Like, this doesn't make sense.

[1:18:35] Andrew: Wait a minute. I know that you've explained this before, but I have no memory of you saying this.

[1:18:40] Aman Adwin: I didn't know that you didn't like Four Minutes.

[1:18:43] Andrew: No, that's why I went...

[1:18:44] Aman Adwin: Really? I saw the thumbnail and I was like, oh, oh, we're good. I actually...

[1:18:47] Aman Adwin: We could vote right now before you even press play.

[1:18:50] Andrew: Wait, what do you have against Four Minutes?

[1:18:52] Aman Adwin: I don't get... What is the...

[1:18:54] Aman Adwin: It's fine. What is the thesis? It's entertaining. Like, yeah, there are cute parts of it. Yeah. But, like, I could have left this in round three, in round two. Like, it's not...

[1:19:03] Andrew: Wait.

[1:19:06] Aman Adwin: When I think about you, and I feel like I know... I know you well at this point. But you like also making up stuff about me, so let's hear it.

[1:19:16] Andrew: So maybe I'm just making this up too. That I'm like, I know Alison Alamode. She loves Four Minutes. She loves Baby One More Time and she loves Four Minutes. Right? Like, I feel like this is like... This has, like, you kind of written all over it.

[1:19:29] Aman Adwin: I have. It's, like, fun. It's upbeat. It's, like, it's silly.

[1:19:33] Andrew: No?

[1:19:37] Aman Adwin: I have never liked this song. I think even upon airing... I don't think I've ever even streamed this song.

[1:19:40] Andrew: Right.

[1:19:43] Aman Adwin: No, literally. What are we saying? I think I've only ever listened to this because I'm watching the episode.

[1:19:49] Andrew: Correct.

[1:19:50] Aman Adwin: It's a fart in the wind to me.

[1:19:52] Andrew: What?

[1:19:53] Aman Adwin: And I don't... You know, like, Justin Timberlake and Madonna.

[1:19:56] Andrew: Yeah, I mean, yeah. Go off, girls. Go off, King and Queen. I get it. Listen, Four Minute people, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Put the guns down. I'm sorry.

[1:20:06] Andrew: Yeah.

[1:20:08] Aman Adwin: The guns are cocked and ready to go. I just... This is one of those songs that I think is, like... I don't know if this makes sense for these characters.

[1:20:20] Andrew: I don't think you know.

[1:20:21] Aman Adwin: I don't know if it really makes sense. I guess this could make sense for the plot. I think it's fine because I understood what Sue was going for here. I get it.

[1:20:28] Andrew: I get it.

[1:24:39] Aman Adwin: And they're still going for hits and stuff. I get it. I get it. And thank you, Allison, for pointing out. Of course, yes, Madonna too. Makes sense. But I just – I think there's something else. There's other songs that they do.

[1:25:25] Aman Adwin: I was gonna say I don't think I stream either but if I yes I do really like the harmonies that they have with "I Am Changing" and but that's the only reason I think Kurt does sound good on that song is because he has like you know the same Britney of it all he has a very good accompanying voice when it comes to the harmonies. Um, but like it's better than if I'm gonna bring up another song, "I Have Nothing." So yeah, but um I really can't believe this is happening right now. I this discussion has definitely made me feel a little more warmer to the number don't get me wrong now like I do like like I can appreciate more elements of it now that we've discussed it in you know in detail but is this is this what you would have voted for Matt or Matt oh my god hi reflex reflex reflex he met Matt Rutherford obviously oh my god Matt is gonna Matt is gonna be like what the fuck I'm on anyway um is that what you would have voted for Andrew?

[1:26:23] Andrew: Okay so here's the thing okay we can I say before I answer your question can I say my thing's about "Four Minutes" that I really love that is like really working? I want to listen. Um, we don't we don't get a lot of like Cheerio numbers that are like fully like fledged like I love that like it's like a pep rally the entire school is there we're getting a lot of cut tos different characters how they're responding different reactions everything. Um, and like also just like I just think it's like such a fun use of like these characters that it's like when you're going into the back half of season one it's like okay how do we kind of like keep these Kurt and Mercedes characters fresh utilize them and just like throw them in a different environment I thought this was such because this is the reveal that they joined the Cheerios that I'm like I think that is such a fun reveal.

Um, I think the fact that they're like Kurt is singing Madonna Mercedes is singing Justin Timberlake I think is like very inspired very fun. Um, and I just think that like "Four Minutes" itself sounds like a like a marching band like it really lends itself to a marching band kind of vibe. Um, yeah but to answer your question Iman immediately after watching "Four Minutes" I was like I'm voting for "New York State of Mind."

[1:27:39] Aman Adwin: Wait wait wait a minute wait hold on hold on hold on when you said I know what I'm voting for I thought you meant "Four Minutes" because I know how much you love this song. I really like "Four Minutes" but I think that "New York State of Mind" people are going to fucking hate me because I think this is the third episode in a row I voted for "No Air." People hated me for that I voted for um "To Sir With Love." The streets are already kind of mad about that and I think they're already getting they're going to be mad about this too so um I am voting for "New York State of Mind." "New York State of Mind" very fun all the things that I've already said very fun use of the song the fact that they're playing with two different versions and just like it's moving along uh New York and Ohio storyline both in one sweep.

Um, I just think it's like really good storytelling. Um, "Four Minutes" is just it's like a fun number really love it down bad. Um, yeah okay I um I already know what's happening so I mean no I second I I really I honestly do second everything that you said about "Four Minutes." I do think that it is inspired to have the the the swapping of who would sing what right. Um, I do think it is inspired I do think it is one of like what the 10 Cheerio numbers we get in the entire show so you know you got you gotta you gotta give you gotta give it the props there. Um, and I do love that it's you know like these these kids have been giving it to Mr. Shoe since the very beginning like besides Rachel like when they're not happy they will very well let it be known so I do agree that this is a great character moment for both of them.

[1:29:21] Andrew: So I love that. I do how do you two how do you two not have a show on Bravo? Love that honestly she was weighing it on thick honey. Um, but yeah I mean y'all just saw like almost like broke down in tears with this damn Rachel and Marley cover so I gotta go that way I'm sorry I was swayed. I mean okay I do think I appreciate "Four Minutes" more now than when I went into this conversation. I mean I also was very I think a lot of the way it was like I could not fathom that it won over my man it just doesn't make logistical sense it doesn't mean that to me it doesn't make objective sense it just I I am speechless so I feel like that sours it a little but I do I can respect it a little more now. Um, I'm still voting for "New York State of Mind." Um, but I will re-watch um the episode home for you know to pour one out for it. Uh, it's from "Power Madonna" whatever.

[1:30:41] Aman Adwin: Season one episode and left oh wait okay wait why did I say home oh because I have the Fergalicious freaking thing up and Fergalicious yeah I'm looking at the Fergalicious and I was like home no fart "Power of Madonna" yeah um okay because I I can already like see discourse going forward in future episodes people are gonna say Andrew you didn't try to convince Allison and Aman to vote for "Four Minutes" enough like you didn't write as hard as you know no I think you did I think you think it could I have said anything to make you vote for "Four Minutes"? I think everything that was said was a very very good argument but I hold "New York State of Mind" so much more dear to my heart and I have like more of a connection with that song than the newfound respect I have for this song.

[1:31:35] Aman Adwin: Yeah and now you'll have this song for the rest of your life it's beautiful. I think what I like so much about Gleek of the Week is that because like on me and Matt's show Diary Room which we have completely stolen the concept of this show for but we just replaced Glee songs with Big Brother folks yes we were kind of a little bit more we sometimes we have to be a little bit more like objective and leave emotion out of it sometimes not always but with this one I feel a little less guilt about being like no "New York State of Mind" really did something for me when it came out it really helped me in a way because I think that that's kind of like what Glee just does for all of us that's why we're still here talking about this damn show over 11 years like so yeah I don't think you had you did a valiant job in talking about "Four Minutes" you really did and I definitely see it in a different light I damn know when to go watch the episode once we're done.

[1:32:36] Andrew: Well okay wait now that you're saying that but I feel like these two songs actually have a lot in common because we had talked about how perfectly selected the song that they're both duets perfectly selected "New York State of Mind" was because of the you know Marley and how it makes sense for her storyline and how it makes sense for Rachel's and then this one obviously it's a Madonna song and it's a do it's a Madonna duet with another with a male counterpart and like selected by Sue because you know that's the whole theme of the episode and so I can respect like there are two sides of a coin in terms of like contextually being perfect for like a perfect setup for the storylines of each episode.

Yeah but I you know I love a ballad I love I tend to lean more toward ballads anyway but that's not the only reason I'm voting for "New York State of Mind" but you you did put up a valiant effort okay thank you people will still say otherwise I'm sure of it well y'all can talk to me come to me at me I'm not afraid to fight.

[1:33:45] Aman Adwin: Okay um this was both both competitions really really fun this is a really fun episode thank you so much for joining um but for uh first recap for this episode um "Shake It Out" that did win "Shake It Out" and you shake it in to round five there we go okay um "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman" you make me feel like a natural loser um god damn um "New York State of Mind" um winner state of mind around five state of mind right right um for "Four Minutes" to save the world while your four minutes are up.

[1:34:34] Allyson Alamode: Um okay um Allison what do you want to tell the Gleeks? Um, you know I'm just a silly goofy girl um if you want to follow me it goes on a carousel oh I'm a silly goofy girl on a carousel keep an eye out for me in the carousel on a carousel. Um, right if you love Broadway and Broadway merchandise and you want to know what shows I'm working uh my next show is oh Mary I start that this week and keep an eye out for my merch tour of that show with Alaska Alaska yes I believe was I think Jay Harris and G was on a leave of absence for like medical leave but we have the actor that is playing Mary's husband I think was the same one that was in "Strange Loop." Um, oh um he played the mother I know what you're talking about I think that's him I'm pretty sure that's him yes you're yes you're right I'm blanking on his name right now but yeah so Allison Alamode on all platforms there we go.

[1:35:37] Aman Adwin: And I'm on you have a podcast that you just referenced do you want to do a official plug?

[1:35:44] Aman Adwin: Yes you can follow me everywhere Adam on Adwin um I'm typically most active during the Big Brother season Survivor all of that jazz um but yes you can also follow me and Matt Labore over at our podcast The Diary Room where we basically have robbed Andrew at gunpoint of um his concept tragic for all of the Glee uh songs but we just put a Big Brother skin on it so if you're a fan of Big Brother and you want to know who the best Big Brother player of all time is you can find this over at The Diary Room podcast anywhere you get your podcasts and that is about it.

[1:36:22] Aman Adwin: I feel like you're always popping up your tweets are always yeah I was just going to say I saw your really about Kelly Clarkson and her birds.

[1:36:34] Allyson Alamode: Kelly Clarkson yeah yeah I'm like because that popped off that did really well you know that yeah I wasn't I I was just tweeting my music because I wasn't expecting people to like to not have you recite the tweet but what was the what was your official statement what was the tweet?

[1:36:52] Aman Adwin: I basically was like I feel like whatever happened in that store had to have really pissed her off like somebody had to be very very rude for her to because like I mean like I don't follow Kelly Clarkson like that so like maybe there's some controversies that she's been involved in that I'm not no I completely will concede to that but this is the first of me knowing okay to use their platform as big as she is like you're right it whatever happened had to have irritated her to the point where she's like I am gonna tell my followers.

[1:37:18] Allyson Alamode: Yeah like she got Twitter fingers like Twitter fingers are like it's a disease okay that means that somebody did something.

[1:37:28] Aman Adwin: Yeah so like so you know she was only in the store for five minutes that's what that's now yeah the the they keep the more and more it keeps unfolding so going back and forth that I'm like enough enough no I just saw the meme it's starting to be a bit of a bad look when they're talking about this bird being fifteen thousand dollars and I'm like bitch no someone photoshopped her I can't pay it like people are like dying out here um someone photoshopped her on the bird lady from home alone and instead of the pigeons it's the birds from the store it's all the bird um the bird is really cool though not worth fifteen thousand dollars yeah I really like the way but it's really cool I really like it um but yeah I don't know I whatever by the time this episode comes out it will be like a week old news I think that no matter where you are in this argument I think that your point is probably valid because I think that there are great points on both sides of this argument but at the end of the day I just kind of love that it's I like this kind of internet drama where it's like I agree it's like it's stupid it's like oh yeah team Kelly oh yeah team store oh my gosh.

[1:38:42] Andrew: Um okay well until next week thank you so much for joining me and um see you then okay bye it's click click of the week.
