[1:28] Maddox: Hey Xander, what are you and Clucky doing?

[1:33] Clucky: Meow! Maddox, Mom gave us the most awesome mission. You know Halloween is coming up and with the new rules we have to stay six feet apart from others. That makes it really hard to pass out candy.

[1:45] Maddox: You are right! How are we going to pass out candy to all the trick-or-treaters?

[1:49] Xander: That's where we came in. Commander Clucky and I have devised a plan.

[1:54] Clucky: Bork, bork, bork! Care to tell Kitten and I?

[1:57] Xander: On the table we have four model trebuchets.

[2:01] Maddox: Oh! That's a French type of catapult that uses a long arm to throw stuff.

[2:06] Xander: Exactly! How did you know that?

[2:07] Maddox: You know I read a lot.

[2:09] Clucky: Bork! Ain't that the truth! Meow! Clucky and I have been practicing launching candy where the X's are.

[2:15] Maddox: Oh! The tape X's on the driveway. Are they six feet from the table with the trebuchets?

[2:22] Xander: You got it!

[2:23] Maddox: Yeah! Wow, Clucky! It looks like you and Xander have been very busy indeed.

[2:27] Clucky: Bork! We have! It's taken us most of the morning to construct the trebuchets.

[2:32] Maddox: It's pronounced trebuchets, not trebuchet.

[2:36] Clucky: That does not make sense. It's spelled T-R-E-B-U-C-H-E-T.

[2:41] Maddox: Tre-bu-chet.

[2:43] Xander: It may be spelled that way, but the word is French. They pronounce things differently.

[2:47] Clucky: So, chet is chay instead.

[2:50] Maddox: Oh, my hands! I think I'll stick to launching candy. My head's still spinning from helping Xander put those things together. I used my beak to help him pound in some of the connecting pieces. I may have overdone it. It was worth it, though. Launching the candy's the fun part. My favorite's when Xander makes the explosion noises.

[3:10] Maddox: Do you think anyone will get hurt by the flying candy?

[3:14] Xander: Nah, we'll be sure to tell them when we're launching it. Besides, these are only small trebuchets. They can just launch a candy pack to the X six feet away. It's not like Mom would let me make a big one.

[3:28] Maddox: That's true. Well, maybe Kitten and I will make a sign to let trick-or-treaters know where the safe zone is.

[3:33] Clucky: Yeah! Could you decorate the table to look like a castle? I'll wear my knight costume and we can pretend we're defending it.

[3:40] Maddox: That's a great idea! I will wear my princess costume. This will be so much fun! I was getting worried that with all the restrictions, Halloween was not going to be fun this year.

[3:51] Clucky: I'll help you get the supplies. Commander Clocky, guard the trebuchets!

[3:55] Clucky: Rock, rock!

[4:01] Maddox: Rock! Meow, those are pretty cool. Can you imagine living in medieval France in a castle where knights and princesses live?

[4:09] Clucky: It all sounds so magical.

[4:11] Maddox: It does. Rock, speaking of magical, what is all this Halloween and costume stuff they keep talking about? I love building stuff with Xander, but I don't know why we are throwing candy at people. And why are there costumes?

[4:24] Clucky: Yeah, those are excellent questions. And lucky for you, Maddox and I were just looking those things up for a school paper.

[4:33] Maddox: The tradition originated with an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.

[4:44] Clucky: Did you say ghosts? Are they the ones playing the music?

[4:49] Maddox: Meow, no. But I think it adds a great touch to the history. Are there really ghosts?

[4:57] Clucky: The Celts believed.

[4:59] Maddox: Who are the Celts?

[5:00] Clucky: Those are people in the 1500s in the areas known as Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.

[5:06] Maddox: 1500s? Wow, Halloween's been around for a while.

[5:10] Clucky: Yes, it has. Meow. Anyway, the Celts believed that supernatural beings, fairies, and the souls of the dead roamed the earth on October 31st. These spirits, fairies, and ghosts needed to be honored to ensure that the people and their livestock survived the winter. So they would dress up in costume and then deliver food anonymously to other people in the village.

[5:33] Maddox: Anonymously? What does that mean? Sounds bad.

[5:37] Clucky: Meow, it's not bad. It just means in secret or disguise.

[5:42] Maddox: Oh, because of the costumes.

[5:44] Clucky: Exactly. So as part of the celebration of the beginning of winter, sometimes those that did not have food to give away would dress up in costume and go house to house and perform a song or recite a verse or do a trick in exchange for food.

[5:59] Maddox: Wow, it sounds like a fun way to be sure that everyone in the village had enough for winter. I wonder if anyone will bring us food. Yummy food.

[6:08] Clucky: Meow. Are people going to come around and sing songs while we launch candy?

[6:13] Maddox: I don't think so. Today's traditions have changed. It seems like people mostly dress up in costume and go door to door collecting candy or treats from homeowners. They use the phrase trick or treat when they knock on the door.

[6:25] Clucky: Trick or treat? Why do they say that?

[6:29] Maddox: Well, it goes back to those people who did not have food to give. They'd dress up in costume and they would perform tricks. If they did not know a song or a verse to recite, eventually it changed from food to more sweet treats for these tricks. That's how we get trick or treat.

[6:42] Clucky: Do you think we'll get to see any tricks?

[6:44] Maddox: Meow, I don't think so. It seems like that tradition was lost over the centuries.

[6:48] Clucky: Bummer. It would have been fun to see people do tricks before I launched candy at them.

[6:54] Maddox: Why are we launching the candy?

[6:56] Clucky: I've never explained. It's because of the restrictions due to the sneaky ninja germs. They have to stay six feet away from others.

[7:04] Maddox: So Xander came up with a great solution with the trebuchets to launch the candy.

[7:08] Clucky: Oh, right. Ha, take that sneaky ninja germs. You're not going to ruin our Halloween fun. Come on, let's go see if we can help.

[7:27] Maddox: Meow, Clucky, what are you wearing?

[7:31] Clucky: It's my battle helmet and armor. Xander made it for me out of aluminum foil.

[7:36] Maddox: I like how shiny it is.

[7:38] Clucky: Meow, you do look pretty fancy.

[7:41] Maddox: Aw, thank you. You look pretty nice yourself in your cape and crown. Very royal.

[7:48] Clucky: Why, thank you. I wish I could be out at the table with Xander. But he said that sometimes people come around with their pets and he would not want me to get hurt. It's my job to stay behind the fence and guard the perimeter.

[8:01] Maddox: That makes sense. The table castle looks really great. Maddox and Xander sure did a good job with that. Xander's right. It's probably best that you stay here. He doesn't want you to get hurt.

[8:09] Clucky: I know, I know. What is that?

[8:13] Unknown speaker: Ruff, ruff! Grrr! Ruff, ruff!

[8:16] Unknown speaker: Ruff! Stand back kitten, it looks like a mutant spider bulldog!

[8:22] Maddox: Meow, oh Clucky, it looks like it's headed straight for us. I don't see an owner with him either.

[8:27] Unknown speaker: Ruff, ruff! Cheerio mates, how are you on this scary night?

[8:32] Unknown speaker: Grrr! Stay back mutant spider bulldog or I'll raise the alarm!

[8:35] Unknown speaker: No need for such extreme action, my good sir. I just wanted to come over and compliment you on your great costumes.

[8:45] Maddox: But where are my manners? Please forgive, I have not introduced myself. I am Kaisar, the British bulldog.

[8:53] Clucky: Meow, you certainly gave us a fright running at us like that.

[8:57] Unknown speaker: Ruff, I'll say! Well isn't that the point of tonight? To make others jump with fright. I've been running all over the neighborhood scaring people and pets. Although I must say that you two were the easiest to scare so far.

[9:13] Clucky: Ruff, ruff, ruff, ruff, ruff!

[9:15] Maddox: Hey now, it's not every day you encounter a bulldog dressed like a spider. That's a lot of eyes and legs running at you all at once.

[9:22] Clucky: Meow, it is true, your costume does make you extra scary.

[9:26] Unknown speaker: I have no doubt that you would scare away any ghosts or evil spirits.

[9:30] Unknown speaker: What, ghosts and evil spirits? What are you talking about? I thought this night was just to have fun scaring others.

[9:38] Maddox: No, the costumes were to keep people disguised to ward off ghosts and evil spirits that they believed roamed the earth tonight.

[9:45] Unknown speaker: Ruff! Ruff! Now I'm scared. Oh no, I left my owner all alone and he's not wearing a costume. I had better go find him and be sure the ghosts stay away from him. Ruff, ruff, ruff, ruff! Go away, ghosts!

[10:00] Clucky: Well now, hold on there! Ruff, ruff, ruff! I'm on a mission to protect my owner. Back I say! Man, my heart's still racing from his approach and now he's gone.

[10:09] Maddox: Meow, you just never know what you're going to discover on Halloween.

[10:16] Clucky: Look out, it's Halloween. Is this all a dream? The spooks are out at night. They're sure to cause a fright. Don't put up a fight. You'll waste all your might. Look out, it's Halloween. What made that scary scream?

[10:40] Unknown speaker: Did someone say screaming? Has the hamster revolution started? What have I missed?

[10:47] Maddox: Meow! Rubix, it's you! What are you doing out here in your hamster ball?

[10:53] Rubix: I was awake and Maddox thought I might enjoy the spectacle. She did not say what it was. Is it time?

[10:59] Maddox: Meow! Has the hamster takeover begun?

[11:03] Rubix: I see the boy has constructed some sort of battlement and it appears he is launching some sort of counteroffensive.

[11:10] Unknown speaker: Ruff!

[11:11] Rubix: What is Maddox doing? She is not wearing armor. She is dressed like a damsel in distress. I cannot believe she is my owner.

[11:21] Maddox: Meow! For your information, Maddox is dressed as a princess and it is Halloween, not the hamster revolution. Which is not going to happen.

[11:30] Rubix: Squeak! That is not as exciting as a revolution. What was all your crooning about screaming?

[11:46] Clucky: She was not crowing. I'm the only one around here that crows.

[11:49] Rubix: Crooning, not crowing. It means singing, Clucky.

[11:55] Clucky: Oh, so many new words today. So, you are Rubix. Well, it's nice to finally meet you. I'm Sir Cluckington of...

[12:03] Rubix: Oh, I know who you are, Rooster. Your crowing haunts my dreams while I sleep during the day. However, you are responsible for my title, Hamster of Doom, so I thank you for that.

[12:13] Clucky: You are most welcome. It's a pretty cool title. But you don't have to be evil all the time. We're happy to be your friends.

[12:21] Rubix: What is it with the two of you and friendship? All powerful rulers do not have friends.

[12:26] Clucky: All powerful? Meow. How are you doing getting out of that hamster ball?

[12:31] Rubix: That is not the point.

[12:32] Squeak! This is only a temporary issue.

[12:36] Clucky: Are you going to make your escape now in your ball?

[12:39] Rubix: I was trying to squeeze through the fence, but the blasted ball appears to be too wide and I can't get through the bars.

[12:44] Clucky: Too bad. You'll have to stay and watch the fun with us.

[12:47] Rubix: I don't want to watch what you call fun. If it is not a revolt, I am not interested.

[12:52] Clucky: You're missing out on a lot of good times, Rubix. What is that over there?

[12:56] Maddox: Meow. That's our neighbor Megan in a blow-up unicorn costume. And that's Xander's friend Mitchell dressed up like a velociraptor. And look over there. It's Sir Elliot, dressed as another brave knight.

[13:08] Rubix: Oh, my. Adeline is looking lovely in her Princess Jasmine costume.

[13:13] Maddox: They sure do look like they're having fun. Oh, my. Noddy has spent so much time on her At-At-Walker costume. Man, I had no idea you could do that with cardboard. It's fantastic.

[13:26] Rubix: And she's got Nicole and Catlin with her, dressed as Rey and Princess Leia.

[13:31] Maddox: Maybe it would be fun to watch for a little bit.
