[1:41] Brock: I fall off my roost at least once a week.

[1:45] Clucky: Yeah, more like three times a week.

[1:49] Brock: Thank you for being so understanding.

[1:51] Piper: No problem at all. It's not every day I get to help such a beautiful lady.

[1:57] Brock: Where are my manners? I am Sir Clickington of Carrington.

[2:05] Brock: And this is Kitten.

[2:07] Kitten: Kitten Adeline. Pleased to meet you.

[2:11] Piper: What kind of bird are you?

[2:13] Brock: You are correct. This is my first visit to this area, but my family comes every year. I am an American White Pelican, and this is my first migration.

[2:23] Kitten: What's a migration?

[2:25] Piper: It's the seasonal movement of animals from one region to another.

[2:29] Kitten: Why?

[2:31] Piper: Why would you do that?

[2:33] Piper: Oh, we have to. The land we come from is called Washington. It is beautiful in the spring and summer months. It has large forests, trees, mountains, and lakes.

[2:43] Kitten: Oh, that does sound lovely. What's a mountain?

[2:47] Piper: You don't know what a mountain is?

[2:49] Kitten: Well, no. I don't believe we have any of those around here. I think I may have seen a picture in a book.

[2:57] Piper: Oh, of course. Well, a mountain is a huge hill. It can reach so high into the sky that the tops can be covered in snow.

[3:05] Kitten: What is snow?

[3:07] Piper: That is the evil white fluff that covers the ground and trees like a cold fluffy blanket. It's the reason we migrate south during the fall and stay here for the winter.

[3:19] Kitten: Why are you afraid of a fluffy white blanket?

[3:31] Piper: I guess I did not do a good job of explaining the snow. It only comes around when the temperatures are super cold. Too cold for us to survive. Also, it sometimes gets so cold that the water on the lakes can freeze.

[3:51] Kitten: Oh my! Frozen water?

[3:53] Piper: We had that happen once for a day.

[3:59] Kitten: So you know how awful the cold can be?

[4:01] Piper: Yeah.

[4:03] Kitten: Are you saying it lasts much longer than a day?

[4:08] Piper: Oh, yes! It's a whole season which can be months. All the fish that we eat in the lake swim way down to the bottom to stay warm. All the leaves fall off the trees. And many forest animals hibernate or migrate for the winter to survive the cold.

[4:26] Kitten: What is hibernate?

[4:28] Piper: Hibernate is when an animal goes to sleep for a season.

[4:32] Clucky: That's right. I read about it with Maddox. They spend their spring and summer months eating and getting really fat.

[4:40] Piper: Food? Eating all the time? Bruh! Where do I sign up?

[4:44] Kitten: Clucky, they eat all summer so they have enough fat on them to survive the winter months. During that time, they go into a cave and sleep the whole winter.

[4:54] Clucky: Wait, what now? Are you saying they do not eat all winter? They curl up and sleep?

[5:00] Piper: Well, it depends how cold the winter is. They could hibernate from three weeks to four months if the cold, fluffy blanket lasts that long.

[5:14] Clucky: On second thought, no thank you. No food for months? Nope.

[5:18] Kitten: Mio, I could not imagine you being still for that long either.

[5:24] Kitten: So, Piper, how do you know when to leave and where to go on your migration? How far away is this Washington place?

[5:30] Piper: Wow, you ask a lot of questions.

[5:32] Kitten: Oh, we're just getting started. If you don't ask questions, we'll never find the answers.

[5:38] Piper: True.

[5:44] Piper: Cool weather rolls in and my feathers start to grow in. Now it's time for migration.

[5:52] Piper: It's a migration across the nation.

[7:16] Piper: Well, of course we rest. When we get hungry, we fly down to a lake or pond and land in the water. We're fishing to fill our bellies.

[7:24] Piper: We each eat about four pounds of fish or crustaceans a day.

[7:30] Clucky: Yeah, that's a lot of food. I like a girl with a big appetite.

[7:34] Piper: We have to eat to keep our strength up and have enough energy to fly all day.

[7:38] Kitten: How do you know where to go?

[7:41] Piper: There is just a feeling we get that seems to pull us all along. Can't really explain it. This is my first migration. But it was strange. Even though I was flying with our flock, I knew where we were going. I've never been here before, but I knew this is where we were headed.

[8:01] Clucky: So is this your final stop or are you headed further south?

[8:05] Piper: No, no, this is our final stop. My mom told me as we were starting our landing. Although she didn't need to tell me. The tug inside just stopped. This is where we'll stay for the winter.

[8:16] Clucky: Then in the spring you'll go back?

[8:17] Piper: Yep. Why go back? Seems like a lot of work to fly all the way down here just to fly back in a few months. It never gets cold here.

[8:25] Clucky: Well, maybe for a day or two. But we've never had a cold fluffy blanket attack.

[8:33] Piper: It's called snow, Clucky.

[8:35] Clucky: Meow. Oh yeah, snow. We've never had a snow attack.

[8:42] Piper: Why doesn't your flock just stay here?

[8:44] Clucky: Oh no, we couldn't do that. The land up north needs us to help keep the balance of the ecosystem. If we were not there to eat the fish and crustaceans, they would become overpopulated. And that would be a mess.

[8:57] Piper: Speaking of fish, I don't think our little pond has enough food for your whole family.

[9:03] Clucky: Oh, not to worry. If we can't find enough food in the pond, we'll fly to other ponds and the ocean to get food.

[9:09] Piper: Oh, so you're not staying here then.

[9:12] Clucky: No, we are. This will be our base. If we need to fly off for a few hours to find food, we'll do that. But this will be our home pond while we're here.

[9:21] Piper: Hooray! I thought it's wonderful. This does seem like a really nice place. I am looking forward to exploring it.

[9:29] Clucky: Brock, it is a great place. But Piper, we need to fill you in on the dangers of the pond.

[9:38] Piper: Dangers of the pond?

[9:43] Clucky: Oh yeah, there are lots of things you need to be on the lookout for. I don't know if you have them in Washing Machine, but...

[9:50] Piper: It's Washington, not Washing Machine.

[9:53] Clucky: Meow. Right, right, Brock, Brock, Brock, right. Does Washington have gators and snakes?

[10:04] Piper: Oh, snakes are delicious. Every once in a while, I would catch one and slurp it up like a noodle.

[10:11] Clucky: Ew, ew. Well, I would not recommend that here. Many of our snakes are venomous or constrictors.

[10:19] Piper: What does that mean?

[10:21] Clucky: Well, a constrictor is a big fat snake that coils around you and squeezes the life out of you. You're like, Brock, I can't breathe. Go towards the light. And then it swallows you down in one gulp.

[10:37] Piper: Meow, please excuse him. A constrictor is a very muscular snake that does coil around its prey until they are unable to breathe.

[10:45] Clucky: Oh my, and what do the venomous ones do?

[10:49] Piper: Those guys lie in wait. Then they strike as fast as lightning. Pow! Ow! Oh, I can't feel my feathers. I'm so sleepy. I can't move. Goodbye, world. And then they swallow you down in one gulp.

[11:06] Clucky: Oh, Clucky. The venomous snakes around here are very fast. And with one bite can inject a toxin into your body that will paralyze you, which means you won't be able to get away.

[11:18] Piper: Oh my, got it. Stay away from moving noodles. Now, what are these gator things you mentioned?

[11:26] Clucky: Beware of floating logs. We did a whole thing on them in Season 1, Episode 2, Geronimo.

[11:41] Piper: Who is Geronimo?

[11:43] Clucky: He was a seven-foot alligator that stalked the pond until he was removed by the gator trapper. We have not seen any gators recently. But we need constant vigilance.

[11:54] Piper: Constant what-ins?

[11:56] Clucky: It means always be on the lookout.

[12:00] Piper: I am so glad I crashed into you. You both have given me so much great information. I'd better return to my squadron.

[12:08] Clucky: Squadron?

[12:10] Piper: It's what you call a group of pelicans.

[12:12] Clucky: Oh, squadron. It sounds like you're on a mission. Do you do patrols together?

[12:18] Piper: No, but we do sometimes swim in a circle and hunt together. It allows us all to scoop up more fish in our bills.

[12:26] Clucky: How much fish can you hold in your bill?

[12:29] Piper: Well, I can scoop up about three gallons of water. I wish that was all fish. But most of the time it's just mainly water.

[12:37] Clucky: You drink three gallons of water at a time?

[12:40] Piper: Brock, how is that possible?

[12:42] Clucky: No, of course not. But you just said you can scoop up to three gallons of water. What do you do with it if you don't drink it?

[12:49] Piper: Well, I close my beak and then I tip my head down. The water mostly drains out, then I swallow down all the tasty fish and anything else I have managed to catch.

[12:59] Clucky: Oh, how interesting. Except for the whole water part. I don't really like getting wet.

[13:06] Piper: Meow. Oh, that's my dad calling. I'd better rejoin my squadron. Thanks again. I'll be sure to let them know about the snakes and gator dangers.
