[1:06] Brock: Whoa, it sure is raining a lot. Xander said that it rains a lot in Washington.

[1:12] Kitten: I know, but it's been days, Brock. The rain here is so different from Florida.

[1:20] Brock: You got that right. Most of the time in Florida, the clouds just roll in, dump a bunch of rain, and then move on. Yeah, they would not hang around for days and days.

[1:32] Kitten: The sky is so gray. I wonder if the sun will ever come back out.

[1:38] Brock: Yes, the sky is gray, but the ground and the trees are all so green.

[1:42] Kitten: True, but I think there might be something wrong with some of those trees with the big leaves.

[1:46] Brock: They're starting to change color. I noticed that too. One day, the tree just across the field was covered with all those big green leaves. Then it seemed like the next day that a lot of the leaves were yellow, and then some even started to fall off. Do you think the tree is sick?

[2:09] Bella: Meow, hi all. Boy, it was a wet walk down here. I am so glad Maddox put up this little rain shelter for me next to your coop, so at least I have a dry spot while I visit.

[2:23] Brock: Howdy, kitten. You're just a creature to help us solve this mystery.

[2:28] Kitten: What mystery? Really, Bella, weren't you listening? Are the big trees sick?

[2:35] Bella: Oh, it's a tree. If it's sick, it does not affect me.

[2:39] Brock: What? If the forest gets sick, it affects all of us.

[2:44] Bella: She is right. The leaves take in carbon dioxide, which is a gas pollutant that we breathe out and is also produced by many cars and factories. The leaves take the carbon dioxide in and, through a process called photosynthesis, change it into oxygen, which we breathe in and keeps us alive.

[2:59] Kitten: Oh my, that was a lot of big words. Where did you hear all this?

[3:04] Bella: I had an extremely informative chat with a chickadee yesterday. He had stopped by and asked me to pass some grain through the bars of the enclosure. He was having trouble finding some seeds. As he ate, we chatted and he told me about all these gases in the air. I found it very interesting.

[3:21] Brock: That's fascinating. I wish the little chickadees would stop and talk to me, but every time I get close, they fly away. They never seem to believe me that I'm not going to hurt them. Okay, let me get this straight. A little birdie told you that there are two types of gases in the air? Carbon dioxide and oxygen?

[3:37] Bella: Actually, they said there are a lot more gases in the air than just two.

[3:44] Brock: How many?

[3:44] Bella: Well, the main two are nitrogen and oxygen. Nitrogen makes up about 78% of the atmosphere and oxygen is about 21%. And then there are other gases like carbon dioxide, neon, hydrogen, and argon, and a few others that make up a very small percentage of the gases in the air.

[4:04] Brock: So, if the air was like a big pizza...

[4:13] Kitten: Oh, I love pizza!

[4:13] Brock: Me too! So, wait. If the air was like a big pizza and you cut that pizza into four slices, you're telling me that three slices would be nitrogen and the last slice would be mostly oxygen with a few tiny slivers of other gases like carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and others.

[4:34] Bella: Basically, yeah. We all breathe oxygen and out carbon dioxide, which is a python.

[4:42] Kitten: Wait, what? How are snakes involved? I thought Washington did not have all those big snakes like Florida does.

[4:47] Bella: No, no, not python. Pollutants. A pollutant is a chemical or compound that can negatively impact the environment like the air we breathe or the water we drink.

[5:01] Kitten: Oh, so the leaves on the trees take in these pollutants and through a process of photobombing produce more oxygen. Is that why the air up here smells so fresh? Because there is more oxygen because of all the trees?

[5:14] Bella: Photosynthesis, not photobombing. Photobombing is what Xander and I do anytime Maddox tries to take a picture of herself.

[5:27] Brock: Yes, we are surrounded by all these glorious trees. That is also why we need to be concerned if they are getting sick.

[5:36] Kitten: Why do you think the trees are getting sick?

[5:41] Bella: Well, we noticed that some of the trees with the large green leaves are starting to change color and in some cases those leaves are falling off.

[5:46] Brock: Oh, oh, the deciduous trees. Don't worry, this is fall. This is the time when the leaves change into all shades of yellow, red, orange and then the leaves fall off the trees.

[5:59] Kitten: That isn't that bad. You just said that those leaves help create oxygen and we need that to survive.

[6:06] Bella: Yes, that's true. But even though those leaves fall off, there are still plenty of trees around in the world that have leaves to create oxygen.

[6:12] Kitten: But can oxygen get all the way up here?

[6:22] Bella: That oxygen does not need to get all the way up here. Look around you. There are lots of evergreen trees like pine trees and shrubs that don't lose their leaves in the winter. It is only the deciduous trees that lose their leaves in the winter.

[6:32] Kitten: What is a deciduous tree? It sounds like you're sneezing.

[6:41] Bella: Meow. A deciduous tree is one that flowers in the springtime and in the fall loses its leaves. The word deciduous means fall off. So any tree that has leaves that fall off in the season of fall or autumn is a deciduous tree. Those are typically the big wide trees with large leaves on them.

[6:55] Brock: So we can enjoy the changing of the colors of the leaves and not worry about not being able to breathe?

[7:00] Bella: Yes, you can. The trees and shrubs do a good job of converting carbon dioxide and oxygen, but one of the biggest producers of oxygen is our oceans and all the phytoplankton there.

[7:12] Kitten: Who's fighting a plank? Are they pirates?

[7:20] Bella: No, Clucky. Not pirates. Phytoplankton. Those are super small microorganisms that use the process of photosynthesis to create oxygen just like the plants on land. These organisms are so small that you can't even see them with your eyes, but they are responsible for creating over half the oxygen that is in the air today.

[7:40] Kitten: Thank goodness for those little fighting pirates in the ocean.

[7:46] Bella: Phytoplankton. Yes, yes. I knew you'd be able to solve this mystery for us. I have a mystery of my own I'd like you to help me solve.

[7:53] Kitten: What? There's something you don't know and you think we can help you solve it?

[7:59] Bella: Yes, there's lots of things I don't know, but in this case you and the hens are the only ones that can help me solve this mystery.

[8:05] Kitten: That sounds like a really big challenge. Are you sure we're up for it?

[8:10] Bella: Oh yes. All right, tell us. We'll see what we can do.

[8:18] Kitten: Meow, don't sound so scared. I just realized that we're learning about Washington and meeting all these new creatures here and I started to think I don't know where you came from.

[8:22] Bella: That's your mystery? You want to know where the hens and I came from? Oh, well that is not scary or challenging. We have a fabulous story. Where should we start?

[8:36] Kitten: I find the beginning is always best.

[8:45] Bella: Darkness.

[8:50] Kitten: In the beginning it was all darkness.

[8:57] Bella: And a very small space. That's how it started for me too.

[9:05] Kitten: Yes, I remember the darkness too. Of course it was dark for all of us. We were inside of eggs.

[9:12] Bella: Right, she's right. Inside the dark egg I started to hear noises and I wanted to stretch out. I was all curled up. I just knew I had to fight my way out.

[9:18] Kitten: Every chicken starts that way, fighting for freedom.

[9:25] Bella: So I worked and I pushed against the walls of my shell. It took a while, but eventually I realized I could use my beak and I started to peck at the shell. Peck, peck, peck. Scratch, scratch, scratch. Then suddenly crack and light.

[9:35] Kitten: It was so bright I needed to go towards it. Then with one last push with my legs I was free.

[9:44] Bella: My hatching was similar.

[9:44] Kitten: Mine too.

[9:52] Bella: Oh yes, me too. But once I burst from my egg, oh the noise. There were chicks all around me that looked almost exactly like me. Little yellow fluffballs all peeping. Peep, peep, peep. Peep, peep, peep. Where am I? Where's my mother? Where's my food? I'm hungry.

[10:06] Kitten: That happened to me too. Surrounded by little fluffy peepers. So many questions, so much noise.

[10:15] Bella: I was a natural born leader, so of course I was trying to answer all these questions. I peeped to calm down and tell them that it was going to be okay. We'd figure it out.

[10:28] Kitten: Then suddenly a large hand came and took me. The hand was wearing a white glove and it put me in a box alongside a bunch of other chicks. All asking those same questions. Where's my mom? Where's the food? I'm hungry. I'm thirsty.

[10:39] Bella: Wait a minute. I thought you said when we met that you were hatched at the Florida house.

[10:46] Kitten: Well that's not exactly true. I was raised at the Florida property. I was hatched in a chick hatchery in Missouri and taken to a farm store in Florida where Xander found me. That is where we all met. At the farming store in a large metal cage with large orange heat lights floating above us.

[11:06] Bella: It was the same for me. Shortly after breaking free from the restraints of my eggshell, I was plucked up and put in a box and driven to the farm store. When I arrived, I noticed Clucky right away. He was shouting commands and directing chicks to the food and the water.

[11:24] Kitten: Yes, I was plopped in and Clucky was the first to my aid. He helped me up and he showed me where the water bowl was. There was a bigger chick that was pecking on me and Clucky came to my aid. He was smaller than the chick that was pecking at me, but he had no fear and he pecked him right back.

[11:42] Clucky: Aw shucks. You know I can't stand it when a lady's in distress. I was young, scrappy, and hungry to prove myself.

[11:51] Bella: Then it happened. I was helping Bridget get back up to her feet and a hand reached into the metal pin and picked me up. Stroke my head and said, hey little guy, you seem pretty fierce. Did you save that little chick from that big one? I can almost hear him saying that. I gave a big peep in response as I was not able to crow yet. He said, I think you're a keeper. Do you want to come home with me? Home. I was not sure what that meant yet, but it sounded good. The boy held me so gently and I knew we were going to be best friends.

[12:29] Kitten: That's how it was for me when Maddox picked me up from the pound. I just knew we would be friends. It was like something inside me said, yes, this is your person. He sent me gently on the box. Then he looked back into the big pin with the other chicks. Next he reached for me saying, you are the one who was just rescued by the other chick. We better take you too. Then I was picked up and placed in the box of Clucky. I saw what was happening and thought, I want to go where that rooster is going. I could not stay with all these peeping chicks with no direction. When Xander's hand reached down again, I leapt for it. He was surprised. Whoa, who are you? You've got a lot of spirit. You can be part of my flock too.

[13:15] Clucky: And he placed me in the box. Then another person said, Xander, did you pick out your chicks? Remember, no more than four.

[13:22] Kitten: I got one more dad. I had just walked away from the water trough when I saw his hand coming down. All of the chicks around me scattered in all direction. I just looked up and thought maybe he wanted to high five. So I raised my little claw to him. Xander bumped my claw and said, fearless. We certainly want brave hens in our flock. Want to join?

[13:45] Clucky: I don't know about fearless, but I certainly wanted out of that noisy metal pen. I peeped in response and I was put in the box. Yep, four little fluffy chicks in a box. We were all only two or three days old. The car ride was short compared to traveling from the hatchery. And when we got to the house, Xander set us up in the nesting box. So really kitten, almost all my memories are of Xander in the Florida home.

[14:11] Bridget: Oh boy, we had some good times there.

[14:13] Clucky: We sure did.

[14:15] Bridget: We are mostly having a good time in Washington too.

[14:18] Clucky: I know, it's just different.

[14:21] Bridget: I'm still getting used to Washington. There are so many changes.

[14:25] Clucky: Heck, now we have seasons. We didn't have those in Florida.

[14:30] Bridget: They say the only thing that stays the same is change.

[14:33] Clucky: What does that mean? How does change stay the same?

[14:36] Bridget: Is that a riddle?

[14:38] Clucky: No, she means in life everything changes. The good times don't last forever and neither do the bad.

[14:43] Bridget: Yeah, exactly.

[14:46] Clucky: That's why it's so important to enjoy the good times when we have them and remind yourself that the bad times will pass too.

[14:52] Bridget: I can deal with this rain passing. However, this dirt has now changed to mud and it's certainly something new.

[14:58] Clucky: I kind of like how it squishes through my claws.

[15:01] Bridget: Have you noticed how soft your skin around your claws are now? I think the mud must be good for our claws.

[15:09] Clucky: I heard the mom person telling Maddox about something called a mud bath. She said it was good for human skin.

[15:15] Bridget: I wonder if it's the same for chicken skin.

[15:18] Clucky: Yeah, I would never.

[15:20] Bridget: I don't know. That sounds kind of interesting. However, I don't know that I would want to get my feathers in it.

[15:27] Clucky: I guess I better get back up to the house. I was hoping that the rain would stop, but no such luck.

[15:32] Bridget: Thank you for sharing your story with me and how you all came into the family.

[15:36] Clucky: Anytime. We love telling our story from fluff to feathers.

[16:18] Clucky: If you just want to talk, why are you chasing me across the tree branches?

[16:25] Clucky: I am not a predator.

[16:28] Bridget: I was not born yesterday. I see your claws. And teeth.

[16:33] Clucky: I'm a cat, but I don't want to hurt you. I live in the house. We're new here.

[16:39] Bridget: Go back to where you came from.

[16:42] Clucky: No need to be rude.

[16:45] Bridget: Stop chasing me. Leap. Ha ha. You'll never catch me.

[16:50] Clucky: I don't want to catch you. I just want to chat. Get to know you.

[16:57] Bridget: Ruff, what is up there?

[16:59] Clucky: Another predator. Must climb higher.

[17:04] Bridget: How did I get so close to the dog yard? Jump. Oh my, I'm stuck in this very large tree. Must climb up to that branch.

[17:12] Clucky: Ruff, get down here, intruder. Come and face me.

[17:15] Bridget: Hop. Don't fall. Almost to the branch.

[17:19] Clucky: There are no branches down here. I'm just clinging to the trunk of this tree.

[17:27] Bridget: What's going on, Jack? What is it?

[17:29] Clucky: Up there, on the side of the tree. Ruff, ruff, ruff. There's an invader.

[17:33] Bridget: Ruff, ruff.

[17:34] Clucky: Cat? Oh my, kitten. Are you okay? How are you holding on to the huge tree trunk?

[17:40] Bridget: Don't fall. It's a long way down.

[17:44] Clucky: Must make it to the branch. Jump. Jump. I got it.

[17:49] Bridget: Oh meow, I'm on the branch.

[17:52] Clucky: Oh, thank goodness. You made it to the branch. Can't believe you just used your claw to hug that tree and jump up the tree that way. You look like a ninja.

[18:00] Bridget: Ninja attacker. Get down here and fight.

[18:05] Clucky: Jack, it's not a ninja attacker. It's kitten.

[18:11] Bridget: Who?

[18:12] Clucky: Ay yi yi, chico. How many times, Jack?

[18:17] Bridget: Kitten. Maddox's cat.

[18:20] Clucky: Maddox has a cat? Since when?

[18:22] Bridget: Never mind. Kitten, what happened? How did you end up on the side of the tree?

[18:29] Clucky: I was coming up from visiting Clucky and I saw a new creature. I think it might have been a chipmunk. I was trying to talk to him and he started to run away. I was following him through the trees when I lost track of where I was and I ended up in this small tree over there. And Jack came out and started barking and frightened me and the little creature. We both jumped on the big tree and that's when you came out.

[18:50] Bridget: Oh, wow. Where is the little creature now?

[18:54] Clucky: I don't know. In all the commotion, I think it fled through the high branches.

[18:58] Bridget: Aw, that's too bad. I love meeting the new creatures. However, it's hard to meet them from the inside of the fenced yard.

[19:07] Clucky: How am I ever going to get down from here? I am so high. I am as high as the roof. I can't climb down.

[19:15] Bridget: Neat creatures. What kind of dog are you? We are supposed to keep the vermin away, not make friends with them. We must protect the family.

[19:23] Clucky: We don't need to protect the family from Kitten. She is part of the family.

[19:29] Bridget: I am going to get the family. They need to know what's going on.

[19:33] Clucky: Ooh, that's a good idea. We'll see if we can get help, Kitten.

[19:38] Bridget: Mom, person!

[19:43] Clucky: It's getting dark and it's still raining. I hope I don't have to sleep up here tonight.

[19:49] Bridget: Doggies, doggies, what's all the commotion?

[19:52] Clucky: Calm down.

[19:56] Bridget: What's going on? Has anyone seen Kitten?

[19:59] Clucky: She's up on the tree.

[20:02] Bridget: Oh, Mom, look. Kitten is way up in that tall tree.

[20:53] Clucky: Okay, I've got the dogs in. Just once, I wish something like this would happen when your dad was actually home.

[21:05] Clucky: It's getting dark and it's raining. Will Kitten have to spend the night in the tree?

[21:10] Bridget: Oh, she will freeze. She's already soaked.

[21:13] Clucky: What if a cougar gets her?

[21:15] Bridget: Maddox, calm down. Panicking is not going to help us rescue Kitten. We've got to figure this out.

[21:21] Clucky: It's so high and there are no low branches. How will we get to her?

[21:28] Bridget: I'm going to go get the extension ladder. I think it will reach the branch.

[21:33] Clucky: Hold on, Kitten. Mom is going to get the ladder. I know you are scared. And probably hungry.

[21:40] Bridget: Oh, you poor baby. We're so wet.

[21:47] Clucky: That was heavy.

[21:49] Bridget: Maddox, help me. Help me lean it up against the trunk.

[21:52] Clucky: Okay.

[21:57] Bridget: That's all the way up. It almost reaches the branch.

[22:05] Clucky: It's not very flat.

[22:35] Clucky: We can't leave her up there.

[22:39] Bridget: Maddox, I need you to calm down. We will get Kitten out of the tree.

[22:44] Clucky: Yeah. Here's what we're going to do. Take my phone.

[22:48] Bridget: Why do I need your phone?

[22:50] Clucky: I'm going to climb up the ladder and try and get Kitten out of the tree. I'm going to need you to hold the bottom of the ladder as steady as you can. If the ladder should fall, I need you to call the ambulance.

[23:00] Bridget: What? Why?

[23:02] Clucky: Honey, if this ladder falls while I'm on it, I'm going to get very hurt. There's a small cliff on one side of the tree and a 30-foot drop into the dog yard on the other. Either option, I will probably need some medical attention.

[23:14] Bridget: Do you know the number to call?

[23:16] Clucky: Yes, 911, but Mom, don't fall.

[23:19] Bridget: Meow, meow.

[23:21] Clucky: I need you to be brave, Maddox. Just like when you jumped into the pond to save S'mores. Can you do that?

[23:27] Bridget: Yeah, I think so.

[23:29] Clucky: Okay, hold the ladder. I'm going up.

[23:32] Bridget: Whoa.

[23:34] Clucky: I'm okay, honey. My foot just slipped a little. If the rungs are wet, hold it steady.

[23:44] Clucky: Come on, kitten. Want to meet me halfway?

[27:30] Clucky: I've been wondering, what is Clucky's favorite food? And what is Kitten's favorite book?

[27:33] Bridget: Oh, my favorite food. Oh, there are so many to choose from. But I would say my favorite is mealworms. They're crunchy and nutritious and delicious.

[27:48] Clucky: Ew, no thank you.

[27:51] Bridget: A favorite book? Oh, man, that's like choosing a favorite star in the sky. There are so many wonderful books out there. And I'm sure many I haven't even read yet. One of my favorite books that I've read over and over with Maddox is The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer. It's a multiple book adventure and I just love it. It's a retelling of fairy tale characters and I just love fairy tales.
