[0:01] Quincy Brown: Get Zac Efron in the Wicked movie.
[0:03] Kevin Bianchi: Maybe he's Dr. Dillamond.
[0:09] Quincy Brown: My name's Quincy.
[0:11] Kevin Bianchi: And my name's Kevin.
[0:14] Quincy Brown: And this is Sentimental Men from Theaterly. We are here to talk, and maybe scream, about our favorite women in musical theater.
[0:31] Kevin Bianchi: The best way to bring people together is to give them a really good enemy.
[0:38] Quincy Brown: Unlimited!
[0:43] Kevin Bianchi: Let's set the scene for everybody.
[0:46] Quincy Brown: Do you think my voice just set the scene a little bit?
[0:49] Kevin Bianchi: A little bit, but so it's Sunday evening.
[0:54] Quincy Brown: Quincy comes over to my house to watch the commercial.
[0:57] Kevin Bianchi: And we're like, we surely have, it's going to be hours.
[1:01] Quincy Brown: To watch the commercial, to watch the Super Bowl.
[1:03] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So we're like, surely we're going to have hours until this commercial comes on.
[1:08] Quincy Brown: Like, we're still settling. I'm like walking around looking for something.
[1:12] Kevin Bianchi: And out of the corner of my eye, I see that hat.
[1:16] Quincy Brown: Yeah, could this last an hour or two?
[1:19] Kevin Bianchi: But boy did it, I'm glad it happened when it did at the beginning of the game.
[1:26] Quincy Brown: Because if that had happened at 9:30 at night, I don't think I would have been able to emotionally handle it.
[1:34] Kevin Bianchi: But since it happened right at the top of the game.
[1:36] Quincy Brown: Well here's the thing, I was excited about the Wicked trailer. I was excited about the Usher halftime show. I was excited about Taylor Swift being there. I was excited about the possibility of Taylor Swift announcing something. I was excited about the possibility of Beyonce announcing something. So this entire Super Bowl was really engaging for me. I was not dreading this night like I have Super Bowl nights.
[1:54] Kevin Bianchi: I'm glad. I'm glad that it was able to deliver for you.
[1:58] Quincy Brown: I'm sure the executives would be thrilled to know.
[2:03] Kevin Bianchi: I'd be curious what viewership was for that Super Bowl. I guarantee it was up.
[2:06] Quincy Brown: At least for, yeah, for chunks of it. I don't know, I'm curious too.
[2:11] Kevin Bianchi: And it was nice because the trailer came out and then we could spend the rest of the game on our phones.
[2:15] Quincy Brown: Exactly, we had something to occupy us.
[2:17] Kevin Bianchi: Engaging in the larger cultural discourse.
[2:18] Quincy Brown: They said let's give these gays something to hold them over until Usher.
[2:22] Kevin Bianchi: I was expecting, what were you expecting this trailer to be? Because when I heard the rumblings happening, I was fully expecting 15 to 30 seconds.
[2:33] Quincy Brown: Especially if it was during the Super Bowl. 15 to 30 seconds of Oz B-roll, Oz B-roll, glamour shot, glamour shot, glamour shot. And then like the end is like a green hand and Ariana's hand grabbing each other. Blackout wicked. I wasn't expecting faces. I was not expecting all of this.
[2:51] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, I was also expecting like a spot, like a 15 second teaser spot. And so we had the beginning of it that we had. And as soon as it got to that point of Ariana going, you're green and it cut. I was like, oh, that's going to be it. Like, are they just going to leave us with you're green? Because I thought for sure we were not going to see Cynthia.
[3:16] Quincy Brown: OK, wait, should we go like.
[3:19] Kevin Bianchi: Yes, yeah, let's let's go. Let's do what you just said.
[3:22] Quincy Brown: OK, let's go. I have it open.
[3:25] Kevin Bianchi: Oh, yeah, I want to have that.
[3:27] Quincy Brown: We open.
[3:29] Kevin Bianchi: You go ahead, you keep narrating.
[3:31] Quincy Brown: On the hat.
[3:34] Kevin Bianchi: Which.
[3:36] Quincy Brown: The hat.
[3:37] Kevin Bianchi: Not what I was expecting for the hat, but I'm happy it looks the way it does.
[3:42] Quincy Brown: It is a very cool like shout out to Paul Tazewell. It is a very cool like.
[3:50] Kevin Bianchi: Film version of the hat, like it's so much more detailed than it could be on stage, because like you would never see all that, but seeing it in this close up, like all of the.
[4:02] Quincy Brown: The like pleading and like detailing on it is so cool. It also looks like it has some real structure. It looks like a sturdy hat.
[4:10] Kevin Bianchi: It looks how is that going to fit in that itty bitty little box that she pulls it out?
[4:15] Quincy Brown: Then we see Cynthia's hand on a pile of.
[4:19] Kevin Bianchi: Grazing a pile of yellow bricks, which I've seen some discourse saying that's like the fallen house scene.
[4:25] Quincy Brown: You think I thought that they're like leaning into.
[4:30] Kevin Bianchi: Like that the yellow brick road is being built, right? You think these are like the remnants of the house, these bricks?
[4:40] Quincy Brown: Or you think this is. There's something somber about the shot for sure.
[4:45] Kevin Bianchi: It's not giving just like a construction happening.
[4:48] Quincy Brown: Yeah, it is a millisecond.
[4:50] Kevin Bianchi: It is a millisecond. I'm like squinting at what costume she's wearing. I'm like, is that.
[4:56] Quincy Brown: But it is cool. OK, well, can we actually let's talk about the costume, because I think this is something that.
[5:02] Kevin Bianchi: This is a point of contention that you and I had.
[5:05] Quincy Brown: Is that did I use that correctly? This is something that you and I disagreed on last night.
[5:09] Kevin Bianchi: Point of contention.
[5:10] Quincy Brown: I find it interesting and I'm curious to see how it plays out in the movie that Elphaba is showing up to Shiz in her black dress because I feel like in the stage show, which I recognize this is not. Her getting into her black dress is like when we're starting to get wicked witchy.
[5:27] Kevin Bianchi: Totally is when we're starting to make that transition. So her showing up on day one, kind of dressed in the one short day stage frock is an interesting choice to me.
[5:44] Quincy Brown: Yeah.
[5:45] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, it is interesting. And I think my like kind of reasoning for it last night was that I guess technically on the first day she showed she's not a student. She's showing up as a caretaker. So, like, I guess it could make sense that she's not in Shiz blue. But I do agree that it's interesting because, you know, I love the slow build of the silhouette, like when she stands up and define gravity and has full everything on for the first time. That's like one of my favorite moments. So it is interesting seeing her in kind of that recognizable look off the bat.
[6:24] Quincy Brown: Kevin, is she not a student when she shows up to Shiz?
[6:27] Kevin Bianchi: I don't think so.
[6:29] Quincy Brown: She shows up.
[6:31] Kevin Bianchi: I'm only sending you here for one reason.
[6:33] Quincy Brown: I know to look after my sister Nessa Rose.
[6:35] Kevin Bianchi: Then she does the magic and Marble is like, wait a minute. Are you magic?
[6:39] Quincy Brown: That's not how I read this.
[6:43] Kevin Bianchi: That's not how I read the scene, Kevin. I read the scene as I'm only sending you to this school to take care of your sister, by the way.
[6:49] Quincy Brown: But she is.
[6:50] Kevin Bianchi: No, I don't think she initially and I'm pretty sure in the book she is not a student. Like she's there as a caretaker until Madame Marble sees her and is like, we haven't received our room assignment yet. Nessa is going to stay in my suite. You're getting your own room. Who are you rooming with Miss Alphaba?
[7:09] Quincy Brown: It's giving student.
[7:11] Kevin Bianchi: I'm not saying either of us is right or wrong. My interpretation has always been that Alphaba is being sent not as a student, but as a chaperone. Only once she's there, does she become a student and does the possibility of meeting the wizard, et cetera, et cetera, open to her.
[7:30] Quincy Brown: But to answer your question, I do like the black dress on the first day of school because I do like that it's going to make her stick out more.
[7:40] Kevin Bianchi: Well, OK, so if we're staying on the black dress thread, so she comes to school in the seemingly one short day frock. What's interesting is it looks like we get a scene from Dancing Through Life, Ozdust, where she shows up with the ugly hat that Glinda gives her at around 17 seconds, where she's wearing like an As Long As You're Mine Act 2 dress.
[7:59] Quincy Brown: I'm trying to follow you, but I think I got you.
[8:09] Kevin Bianchi: I think what you're saying is that she seems to be wearing many variations of black dresses throughout this movie. I'm just curious to see how the costume story develops over the course of the films.
[8:23] Quincy Brown: This trailer is a wicked trailer. It is not a wicked part one trailer. It is not a wicked Defy Gravity trailer. It is wicked. And we seemingly are getting tidbits of the entire story of Wicked as we know it.
[8:36] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, I would describe this as a trailer that is selling me the plot of Act 1 of Wicked and using some shots from Act 2 to hype up some more drama.
[8:52] Quincy Brown: And to connect dots for audiences. Like, I think it's important that they included the Wizard of Oz for some.
[8:59] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[9:01] Quincy Brown: And the wizard head of it all. What I think is interesting. I'm not sure if this is going to happen because I think it's too soon to tell. But what I think would be interesting is if they kind of go this route of just selling Wicked for the primary campaign, even though it's going to be in two parts. And let the two part thing be kind of like an afterthought. Like, just sell us Wicked. Get us hyped to see this first movie. Worry about selling the second part.
[9:24] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, I don't. Yeah, I'm excited to see how the trailers for like a wicked part two specifically can be very dark.
[9:31] Quincy Brown: Totally. They got to hook us in before they introduce that.
[9:35] Kevin Bianchi: I also feel like Act 2 is probably where the bulk of the world.
[9:38] Quincy Brown: I know me too. I feel like Act 2 is kind of the bulk of where the like new material will end up. Like any songs they're adding will probably be in Act 2 and any like sequences there. I'm sure we'll get a new song in this first movie.
[9:53] Kevin Bianchi: Well, yeah, they want to want to get that Oscar, baby.
[9:57] Quincy Brown: Well, let's zoom out of the black dresses just a little bit and talk overall aesthetically. How do you feel like Cynthia looks?
[10:03] Kevin Bianchi: Incredible.
[10:07] Quincy Brown: Everything looks incredible. Here's the thing. I feel like for the Wicked movie, my biggest gripe about there being a Wicked movie has been my brain has never been able to imagine what that looks like. Like, what does the stage show look like translated on film? And I think this trailer has done a really good job at being like, this is what it's going to look like.
[10:29] Kevin Bianchi: You're fine.
[10:30] Quincy Brown: This is what it looks like. It looks expensive. The budget for this movie looks insane. And I'm so grateful for it. And you know what? This like really reminded me of the fact that Wicked is very fantastical, which I feel like because we are all so accustomed to the stage show, it's easy to kind of forget the fantasy of it all.
[10:55] Kevin Bianchi: But the scene in the trailer where Glinda is riding in on her ballet shoe boat to arrive at seemingly Shiz is really, really crazy. And it's like, yeah, this is a whole world. They can do whatever they want. I'm so excited for this movie now.
[11:12] Quincy Brown: It's real.
[11:13] Kevin Bianchi: Me too.
[11:14] Quincy Brown: Me too. I love before we move on from Cynthia. I love her green contact lenses.
[11:21] Kevin Bianchi: That's true. That's true.
[11:23] Quincy Brown: Before we bounce too far away.
[11:24] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, I never clocked that. The green contacts are so beautiful.
[11:30] Quincy Brown: Something I this is so weird and specific, but I have been so interested to see how Ariana's hair was going to look as Glinda. Like I couldn't picture Ariana Grande like in the Kirsten Chenoweth wigs, like the short little curly bouncy. So I was excited to see what she looks like.
[11:50] Kevin Bianchi: The shot of Cynthia from behind where she's like adjusting her micro braids behind her.
[11:57] Quincy Brown: Oh, iconic shot in the nails. And then we got Ariana's your green delivery, which is great. But I want to talk about Cynthia's.
[12:09] Kevin Bianchi: Yes, I am.
[12:11] Quincy Brown: Retort.
[12:12] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, because the delivery makes me so excited for that scene because the underlying sarcasm.
[12:19] Quincy Brown: Parred with like how nicely she phrased it because I think I'm like yeah glance. It's like oh, that was a genuine response from her. But with the larger context of the scene, it's like no that was a sarcastic response. So I'm so excited to see that monologue moment from her where she goes off.
[12:35] Kevin Bianchi: Yes. Something that a lot of the ladies say to us is how much like from the jump they're yelling and like in that scene it's always like fine. Yes. I'm green. Yes, I'm this da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da and I think it's cool to see a more like, like the water is simmering but not quite out of boil yet like oh, you're right. I am green. Like thank you for pointing that out to me. Yes stranger.
[13:03] Quincy Brown: Yes. And I'm also excited because I feel like that scene in the stage show is kind of, it's not as specifically between Glinda and Elphaba. It looks like in the movie they have made it more of a like Glinda and Elphaba.
[13:14] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, yeah, so I'm curious to see if it stays that way or if it turns into a thing where she's like going around to all the Shiz students.
[13:21] Quincy Brown: Yeah. Yeah, I liked to um, I don't know. It was cool. Like even the couple establishing shots we got the Shiz campus feel so campy, I don't know if that if I'm...
[13:36] Kevin Bianchi: I don't know.
[13:37] Quincy Brown: It's like another cool instance of like when you're not restricted to a cast of 16 like you can have this full college campus filled with all these kids all looking and seeing this green outside.
[13:50] Kevin Bianchi: Scenes that we know so well reframed. Should we talk about the green? This is the first time we've seen Elphaba's green skin and all of its glory. What do we think?
[14:00] Quincy Brown: Yes, you know, what's interesting is I was looking at that picture I think Vanity Fair that came out like right when the trailer did and the green looks different in the picture to me than the trailer.
[14:12] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah.
[14:15] Quincy Brown: Which I wonder it's probably just like retouching but I think the green looks yeah, gorgeous. I prefer the trailer more than in the Vanity Fair photo, which I think is good.
[14:28] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah.
[14:30] Quincy Brown: I think it's really pretty and I do think and I say this just because I have it paused on a scene from Shiz right now that her green face against the black dress does pop in a way that green against the blue doesn't or in a different way like because the green paired with the blue Shiz outfit is very coordinated. Green goes good with blue.
[14:58] Kevin Bianchi: Do we only see Elphaba in black in this entire trailer?
[15:04] Quincy Brown: Oh, no, we get a white frock.
[15:06] Kevin Bianchi: You get the white frock. There's that. Oh my god that one shot of Glinda like leaning her head on Elphaba, I don't know what it's...
[15:12] Quincy Brown: White, yeah, what is that moment?
[15:20] Kevin Bianchi: I'm wondering if it's like a train scene moment or like some of the stuff that happens there is now like a sentimental moment in a field just between the two of them kind of a thing.
[15:31] Quincy Brown: Maybe this is come with me to the Emerald City. Maybe this is her saying like, oh, yeah, like I'm leaving tomorrow. I'm gonna miss Nessa so much.
[15:42] Kevin Bianchi: Okay.
[15:44] Quincy Brown: And she's just come with me. I'm still dead for the Darcy pigtails.
[15:49] Kevin Bianchi: I'm still yeah. Should we talk about this wedding clip?
[15:52] Quincy Brown: Yes. Yes. I think that that like I have a headache. I have to lie down fear just ran off to find Elphaba scene is going to happen at a wedding proper, not at an engagement ball. And so I think that we are gonna see Glinda walk down is gonna get jilted. I do I think to amplify the plot. I think that they will do that, okay, can I propose an alternative execution?
[16:24] Kevin Bianchi: Gold hair with a gentle girl. She's imagining and Elphaba is seeing Glinda get married to Fiyero as she's singing. I'm seeing the life lived out that like she wants or could have or whatever, you know, that's interesting.
[16:42] Quincy Brown: That's pretty. I can hear the bells hairspray vibes Tracy, are you all right?
[16:50] Kevin Bianchi: Famously Ariana Grande's...
[16:57] Quincy Brown: Michelle Yeoh, Michelle Yeoh.
[16:59] Kevin Bianchi: Flawless. I mean all she all we've seen her doing is walking and looking but it looks great.
[17:06] Quincy Brown: And handography.
[17:08] Kevin Bianchi: This whole trailer's a little like lesbian-y for me and I in a good way like that shot of Glinda like touching Elphaba's hand I was like, this is sexy.
[17:20] Quincy Brown: Well woman heavy for sure we see Fiyero for a second we don't oh, I guess we see the wizard.
[17:25] Kevin Bianchi: We don't see but I saw the wizard somebody pointed out you can see Bach in the background of the when she's putting the hat on okay, and yeah, you can...
[17:34] Quincy Brown: He...
[17:35] Kevin Bianchi: Ethan and Marissa are off to the side there. I thought I saw Bach in a shoe scene, but it's a different a different.
[17:44] Quincy Brown: But yeah, so he's exciting.
[17:48] Kevin Bianchi: No Dillamand, no Dillamand to be found Dillamand.
[17:52] Quincy Brown: What does that mean?
[17:56] Kevin Bianchi: I don't know what that means. Have they cut him? Is Miss Coddle Dr. Dillamand, please?
[18:04] Quincy Brown: No, they're not cutting. No, I mean I know but I'm like that means there's still gonna be a moment where they announce who Dillamand is which to me indicates that it's like someone I hope.
[18:15] Kevin Bianchi: I feel like it's been a long time for it not to be.
[18:20] Quincy Brown: How funny that though reveal of the Wicked movie is who is Dr. Dillamand is like who could it be that it warrants? It's just like so interesting especially because everything about the world of this movie seemingly has been so planned and meticulously crafted.
[18:34] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah to Ariana and Cynthia in their glammed bedazzled...
[18:46] Quincy Brown: You're listening and you can sell very excited.
[18:50] Kevin Bianchi: Send you fabric. That's gonna be our Halloween costumes.
[18:54] Quincy Brown: Seriously Kevin like for Halloween we wear that the like thigh-high boots that they were wearing.
[19:01] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, actually a serve. I'm in.
[19:03] Quincy Brown: Halloween you should dye your hair blonde.
[19:10] Kevin Bianchi: I know you could really do it. I'll keep growing it and dye it blonde. You keep shaving your head and we'll be...
[19:12] Quincy Brown: I...
[19:20] Kevin Bianchi: Thought discourse about their people being surprised at the amount of CGI in the trailer. First of all, I didn't really clock it second of all duh. What do you think is gonna happen?
[19:30] Quincy Brown: What? That makes no sense. You're gonna take issue with the fact that there's CGI in the Wicked movie?
[19:39] Kevin Bianchi: And I actually think it looks really great that scene of the monkey busting through the window. It's so cool.
[19:47] Quincy Brown: It leads back to what you're saying is like this state expanding the stage pictures to make them as like epic and fantastical as they should be of course is gonna be fucking CGI in the trailer.
[20:01] Kevin Bianchi: And I guess that's what seeing this trailer has really made me realize is seeing the world building that has happened for this movie.
[20:07] Quincy Brown: Mm-hmm. I'm like, oh, this is yes. This is the Wicked movie. This isn't a movie adaptation of one of our favorite musicals.
[20:13] Kevin Bianchi: I am it's giving this is the beginning of a franchise theme park spin-off series Barbie doll video game like this like this is Harry Potter. We are doing yeah, Barbie was our warm.
[20:33] Quincy Brown: Really really wild that a Broadway musical has spurred this.
[20:38] Kevin Bianchi: But seriously for a musical movie to be happening at this level has this happened before?
[20:45] Quincy Brown: It just feels like there's such a long time a budget and like mainstream buy-in for this adaptation.
[20:51] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, and I can't really think of another reference.
[20:58] Quincy Brown: No.
[20:59] Kevin Bianchi: Although okay, well, I have discourse for you to comment on is what is your take on if you didn't know that this was a musical? Do you feel like this trailer tells you it's a musical?
[21:07] Quincy Brown: Here's the thing and I guess we haven't like recorded an episode as this discourse has been happening. The whole movies aren't marketing that they're musicals thing I can't decide how I feel about it because I do get it.
[21:24] Kevin Bianchi: I like I'm like if you're sitting in a advertising room that is the decision you make to sell your musical movie right now and I think it is like almost the correct decision to be making.
[21:34] Quincy Brown: We kind of talked about it last night. I feel like for Wicked, Wicked I think falls outside of the Color Purple, Mean Girls, Willy Wonka discourse a little bit and I do kind of feel that there is a cultural understanding that Wicked is a musical and also the Wizard of Oz of it all screams musical as well and because that is such a known property and I guess I'm a little too inside of it because I'm hearing like lines from Defying Gravity being sung and the war cry at the end and I'm like, yeah, it's telling us it's a musical obviously.
[22:18] Kevin Bianchi: However, if I am a normal person who does not know what Wicked is and I just watch this, no, I'm probably like oh Ariana Grande's in like a Wizard of Oz remake because it doesn't even necessarily give prequel right the Wizard of Oz like it's like clearly communicating that to us either.
[22:29] Quincy Brown: I'm not sure it matters and I'm not sure that would have been the correct thing to do. I kind of like what they're doing by being like this is a whole new world.
[22:41] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, it's Wizard of Oz II. You're not really sure what it is. But look at how expensive and fantastical it is. Don't you want to see it?
[22:48] Quincy Brown: Which for a teaser trailer? Yeah.
[22:52] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah. I mean we don't even know who Dillamand is.
[22:57] Quincy Brown: I think there's so much more to reveal about this eight, nine months, however long until the movie comes out. This was a hit for me. Like I am NOT I'm not there's not really much of them anything to miss in this trailer. I'm very pleased.
[23:07] Kevin Bianchi: I agree. I agree.
[23:10] Quincy Brown: Yeah, we said last night when the trailer debuted we said every Wicked company member just got an email saying that riff is not attention.
[23:18] Kevin Bianchi: The riffs approved for use for the motion picture are not suitable for any stage production.
[23:31] Quincy Brown: I hope Alyssa Fox went on and did that last night in honor of... in honor of...
[23:38] Kevin Bianchi: It's okay, so what's your take on the war cries?
[23:43] Quincy Brown: I think it's great. I've been seeing some people upset that it's different than the Idina Broadway soundtrack Broadway cast recording war cry which I'm like guys, please.
[23:51] Kevin Bianchi: Of course, she needs to do her own thing and she should do her own thing.
[23:57] Quincy Brown: That is like her stamp on this role. First of all, every Elphaba is doing their own take on the war cry right Cynthia can and should create her own and I'm happy for and I think it's incredible and it's thrilling.
[24:10] Kevin Bianchi: I think we'll ever hear it live on a Broadway stage. I'm not sure and I don't think we should.
[24:15] Quincy Brown: Probably not. I agree.
[24:19] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, I think it's like it feels very unique to her like it feels like it is her war cry.
[24:25] Quincy Brown: Mm-hmm. And it's I...
[24:27] Kevin Bianchi: Be excited when we have her on we need to ask her how many different iterations did you take?
[24:32] Quincy Brown: Yes, how many did you and did she get to choose the one that got used or was it like someone else's?
[24:38] Quincy Brown: Right. I think what's interesting about the War Cry 2 is like I'll be interested visually what is happening during that moment because on stage it's just like the final picture and she does that but like on film like is she gonna be flying when she sings that? I'm just curious how her war cry will match up with the physical action that is happening because it may not. Like she's not just a world picker. What probably think there's a world where we don't get to find gravity in this first movie and it opens the second movie. Quincy, you know that was my in immediately when they said it was going to be two movies. I said they should finish the first one with the wizard will see you now, date date date, bump blackout.
A movie by John M2 open up the second movie with the wizard's chamber scene. They run up and now Defying Gravity is the I want song of the second movie. That's how it... that's how I mean I kind of feel like first movie even if it goes that route would need to end with the you have no real power moment as like a cliffhanger. Yeah, it's a little too in a bow no part two if they just get to see the wizard. You know it's giving Wicked Jr.
[26:11] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, that would personally unless there's unless there's a new song written to give me some sort of bombastic belty moment at the end of Wicked one that personally would be real tough for me to sit with.
[26:23] Quincy Brown: It would be tough. It would be a gag. I would be sure I'll be upset, John M2. But no, I do think it'll be in part one Defying Gravity.
[26:45] Kevin Bianchi: Oh, let's talk about the delivery, the line reading of "it's a wizard who should be afraid of me." I love that line reading because in the show it's always like two beats. It's always like "it's the wizard who should be afraid, bum bum bum bum bum of me." So to hear Cynthia deliver it like as one straight through line really like gave it a different intensity. It would be so like, um, overdramatic and stagey on film to do like "it's the wizard who should be afraid of me." Like it would be too much. There's also something so matter of fact about the line reading. It's the same, yes, it's the same as the "I am greed." Like it's very just like by pulling it back, it's like making it so much more intense as if you were... this trailer is giving the character. I'm excited because I feel like in the stage show Elphaba, because of the way the role is crafted, you lose a lot of the characterization. I feel like Elphaba can subtleties. I don't know how.
[27:49] Quincy Brown: Yeah, and this trailer has really I think shown that we're going to see the intricacies of the character of Elphaba in a way that the stage show doesn't necessarily allow.
[28:00] Kevin Bianchi: I think, yeah, because I think Glinda is really fleshed out on stage and Elphaba sometimes there's some work you have to do to fill in some gaps and I like that it's giving... this movie trailer is giving, you know, Elphaba is really built out.
[28:13] Quincy Brown: Yeah, and I think of course that too has to do with Cynthia. Like I'm sure like Cynthia is the best hands this role could be in, has the theater chops, has the once in a voice or once in a generation voice, but also is this like incredibly talented on-camera performer. I just, I really am so excited after watching this trailer to see her leading this movie in the way that the girlies talk about like having to like lead the company as Elphaba. I think it'll...
[28:51] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, I think Cynthia has such a singular energy that you need to play Elphaba.
[29:00] Quincy Brown: Yeah, I think she's such a unique performer and I am... yeah, it is very much like who else could this have been?
[29:07] Kevin Bianchi: Oh, I want to talk about the bubble because in watching the trailer on your projector at home I didn't clock that there's a whole base to it. I just thought she was floating in a bubble but then you flagged the base to it.
[29:18] Quincy Brown: Um, and yeah, she's like... well talk about your theory, talk about your theory.
[29:24] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, I thought it was cool because the bubble much like the flying was something that I was like I don't know how this is gonna translate. Like I don't know, my brain can't figure out how to make this look good. But I love the solution of like she stands on a little, I don't know, platform which we've seen there's been like a drone picture of her like on a cherry picker on this platform.
[29:53] Quincy Brown: Oh yeah.
[29:53] Kevin Bianchi: And then seemingly then a bubble like comes up around that dress is incredible. Sorry, it's everything. There's actually truly nothing about this trailer to be upset about. There's nothing phenomenal. They're doing a fantastic job on rolling this out. It seems like they're taking very good care of it. I am so happy and excited.
[30:16] Quincy Brown: Me too, me too. I could have used a glimpse of chaos at all.
[30:21] Kevin Bianchi: A glimpse of chaos? I would have taken one little hoof of Dr. Dillamond.
[30:29] Quincy Brown: What if Quincy, okay, you know, okay, wait, come with me on this journey. So you know how like in The Devil Wears Prada or a movie like that where like a character gets a reveal and you see like little pieces of them? Imagine Dillamond in the first movie. Yeah, it's like clack clack clack clack and it's just Dillamond's little hooves walking down the hall and then the door whips open and it's like "settle down children." It's probably what's gonna happen. It's like a full reveal.
[31:05] Kevin Bianchi: I mean you did bring up the possibility that Dillamond is cut and it's Mrs. Cottle now, but I don't think that's true.
[31:11] Quincy Brown: I don't actually think that though. The whispers that I have heard about Miss Cottle are that she has more to do with Madame Morrible, like that she's more...
[31:23] Kevin Bianchi: Oh, bitch, what if Miss Cottle is the one who comes in with the cage?
[31:30] Quincy Brown: More and more with each tick of the time dragon clock, one hears the silence of progress. Quincy is off book and ready.
[31:37] Kevin Bianchi: She actually slayed for the witch's father.
[31:43] Quincy Brown: I really could. That probably is what I would be actually. Um, in every time we see Cynthia's hands in this trailer, she is giving a nail.
[31:52] Kevin Bianchi: She's giving a nail. I love it. It's giving like flying around Oz with those long ass nails.
[32:00] Quincy Brown: Yes, she's got things to do.
[32:06] Kevin Bianchi: There is a shot that I'm excited because I'm like how do they do the flying? I'm not sure if Elphaba like riding a broom proper works necessarily. There's a shot of Cynthia, the broom is like next to her and she like jumps and just kind of grabs on the side of it and glides and that made me very excited to see how they execute the rest of the flying throughout the movie.
[32:25] Quincy Brown: Same. I think we can trust it.
[32:34] Kevin Bianchi: Yes, Cynthia Erivo and the like physical brilliance that she is. I trust that we are getting like action hero Marvel level flying. It's not just going to be like straddling a broom. I think she's going to be standing on it, holding it with one arm, holding it with two arms, sitting on it, straddling it.
[32:58] Quincy Brown: Oh wow, even the final limited possibly.
[33:03] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, even the final shot before we cut to the end card, she's like flying up and just kind of holding on to the broom which indicates a large amount of upper body strength because you have to like be able to hold yourself in line with the broom as it's carrying you up. Otherwise, it'd just be dragging you, right?
[33:13] Quincy Brown: And we do know Cynthia has quite a bit of upper body strength available too.
[33:19] Kevin Bianchi: Oh, I'm so excited.
[33:23] Quincy Brown: Me too. Yeah, I am curious how this is going to affect my Thanksgiving plans though because a large part of me wants to be in New York City to watch this.
[33:29] Kevin Bianchi: I, um, yeah, I will. I'm nervous. I'm gonna be in LA. I said it last... I said it last night. There's no way like this movie's gonna tear families apart on Thanksgiving.
[33:44] Quincy Brown: Like I'm sorry my family if you don't want to be going to see Wicked with me the minute the movie theater opens, then I'm gonna have to be late for dinner.
[33:49] Kevin Bianchi: I want to do like a matinee of Wicked on Broadway and then go see Wicked the movie that night.
[33:56] Quincy Brown: That would be really nice.
[34:01] Kevin Bianchi: See, I think I would rather do it in the... um, that is a good idea. We'll start planning. We'll figure out what we're gonna do.
[34:08] Quincy Brown: It's like see it one last time to say also I didn't know it was gonna be just like this is the last time.
[34:11] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, that's gonna be major.
[34:20] Quincy Brown: One last, one last movie uninfluenced before viewing of the movie or of the musical.
[34:25] Kevin Bianchi: Yeah, yeah, that's a good idea because that is kind of sad. That is gonna be like a, okay, we're entering a new era.
[34:31] Quincy Brown: Yeah, that'll be... I'll be interested to talk to this cast about that, about like do you feel like audiences are showing up expecting something different now that the movie's out?
[34:37] Kevin Bianchi: See, I feel like that happens in like five years. I think in five years there's going to be a new expectation for the Broadway production that I'm curious.
[34:49] Quincy Brown: It's so exciting. I have to go to work, but here's the thing. This is the first time we've been back on mic since...
[34:56] Kevin Bianchi: This is the first time we've...
[35:07] Quincy Brown: Exactly. This is the first time we've been back on mic since the holidays. So much has happened. We did a live show, I went to London and saw a bunch of shit, you moved, I lost my job. There's a lot of life.
[35:21] Kevin Bianchi: Your job?
[35:21] Quincy Brown: I got dumped.
[35:23] Kevin Bianchi: Your job?
[35:23] Quincy Brown: I got dumped. There's been a lot of birthday. I had a birthday. Look what happened. We stopped making new episodes of the podcast and our lives started to crumble.
[35:35] Kevin Bianchi: So if that tells us anything, it's that we should not be taking days off from Sentimental Men.
[35:43] Quincy Brown: We're back. The trailer has brought us back. We have exciting plans for this year, for the next couple months. It feels good to be back on mic with you, Kevin, to my friend.
[35:55] Kevin Bianchi: I will talk to you soon.
[36:13] Quincy Brown: All right, good to talk to y'all.
