[0:00] Jesse McAnally: Hello, I'm Jesse McAnally.
[0:03] Andrew DeWolf: And I'm Andrew DeWolf.
[0:05] Jesse McAnally: And buenos dias! Welcome to Musicals with Cheese, a podcast where I try to get Andrew to like musical theater. And Andrew, how is- I feel like we forgot something. I feel like we forgot something.
[0:17] Andrew DeWolf: Okay, okay. If you're gonna start, like, a performance, you have to open it with your proper, like, howl. You know what I'm saying? Like, you gotta let it loose.
[0:27] Jesse McAnally: You're right. You start.
[0:30] Andrew DeWolf: Okay.
[0:31] Jesse McAnally: All right, all right, my turn.
[0:36] Andrew DeWolf: Oh, that was fucking shit. That was trash.
[0:39] Jesse McAnally: Mine was pretty bad, but yours was straight trash, dude. The thing is, you put sincere effort into yours. Mine was, what cartoon sound effects can I make? Because no matter what, coming from us, it's gonna sound like cartoon sound effects.
[0:52] Andrew DeWolf: What you should do is go back and in post, add in the actual awooga sound when you say it, and then it'll sound funnier.
[1:03] Jesse McAnally: Like a proper, like, okay, okay, okay. That's a funny enough bit. I'll do that. That's a good bit. In case you haven't picked up, we're throwing down. Andrew's been dead for a hot minute, and I had to go chase him down in the Day of the Dead, because nobody put him on their ofrendas.
[1:21] Andrew DeWolf: Don't worry, Jess has got me covered now. I made it through the afterlife TSA. I'm on my way.
[1:27] Jesse McAnally: Now, my question is, does it, like, in the year of our lord, 20,026, if I AI-generated a photo of Andrew and put it on my ofrenda, is that still a photo of Andrew?
[1:44] Andrew DeWolf: It is not, and in fact, you're making it worse, because now people will not be able to remember me. They're going to remember a false vision. I'm gonna get the second death real fucking fast.
[1:53] Jesse McAnally: Okay, okay, okay. Now, let's say I have a photo of you that's just been digitally, like, compressed, because, you know, they do, like, the AI restorations now and ship a Theseus Andrew's face into something that it's barely even recognizable about the original image.
[2:11] Andrew DeWolf: Something about the TSA in this, like, in the movie tells me that there is a very strict interpretation here, so I think any AI alterations or photoshopping to the photo, it will not count.
[2:22] Jesse McAnally: But, but, but, I ask this because ripping his photo out does count, so they do tape and alter the photo to put him back in. But tape is a physical change. I think physical alterations are a little different, and it's not really altering the photo, it's more mending the photo.
[2:39] Andrew DeWolf: Okay, okay, let's say that we have a portrait of Andrew that has been desecrated, spit upon, drawn mustaches on, and that's the only one we can find, and we put that in the ofrenda. Is that still a photo of Andrew?
[2:54] Jesse McAnally: Yes, as long as there's no other alterations. The photo itself remains intact. Noted. This week, in case you haven't picked up what we're throwing down, and we're just being total buzzkills at the start of this really good movie, this week we are talking about Disney Pixar's Coco.
[3:08] Andrew DeWolf: Is this our first Pixar film not on the cheese wheel?
[3:11] Jesse McAnally: I think this is really their only musical.
[3:38] Andrew DeWolf: They don't really have any musicals. This is actually kind of an interesting one.
[3:41] Jesse McAnally: Does Finding Nemo the musical count?
[3:47] Andrew DeWolf: No.
[3:48] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, I didn't think so. It's not a Pixar movie, it's based on a Pixar movie. So Coco is a film written by Adrian Molina and Matthew Aldrich.
[3:55] Andrew DeWolf: Unkrich, Jason Katz, Matthew Aldrich, and Adrian Molina worked on the story.
[4:00] Jesse McAnally: Original songs were by Jermaine Franco, Adrian Molina, Robert Lopez, and Christian Anderson Lopez, speaking of Finding Nemo the musical, with an original score by Michael Giacchino.
[4:11] Andrew DeWolf: It is inspired by the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead.
[4:18] Jesse McAnally: I definitely butchered that. I think it's more like Dia de los Muertos.
[4:27] Andrew DeWolf: Dia de los Muertos. I took French, not Spanish, which is why my French is so terrible.
[4:33] Jesse McAnally: The film premiered on October 20th, 2017 at the Morelia International Film Festival and opened in the United States on November 22nd, 2017.
[4:39] Andrew DeWolf: The film had a 22-minute short film in front of it. Do you remember this? Did you see this in theaters?
[4:44] Jesse McAnally: I did see it in theaters and I didn't like going into this to remember it, but now it's coming back because you brought it up and I was, this is the fucking one where it's like a fucking stupid Frozen short and it's way too fucking long.
[4:58] Andrew DeWolf: Like a half hour Frozen, and this is not a short movie, it's hour 46, made two hours and six minutes from a Frozen half hour special at the front of it and it's not even particularly good.
[5:10] Jesse McAnally: It's bad. And it played on ABC like two weeks later. Was it like a Christmas thing?
[5:16] Andrew DeWolf: It was winter. I just remember the song being like, when we're together. It was fucking awful. I distinctly remember like being like, what the fuck is this? I just want to watch Coco.
[5:29] Jesse McAnally: Um, and it, remember when Pixar had shorts and they were kind of cute, like Jerry's game and for the birds and those were actually short? We're stuck with like Frozen's half hour long television special thrown on the top of this movie.
[5:38] Andrew DeWolf: Um, I'm still angry about it. 10 years later, I think that they, they stopped doing that because it got such a negative reception.
[5:49] Jesse McAnally: Yeah. And I was, nobody was happy about this. I've been listening to Andrew Stanton on the Blank Check podcast. He did this interview and he's basically like, they were too expensive because they, it was basically like a chance to try out new animation techniques and now they just try them out on their feature films and hope for the best.
[6:05] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah. Just like, fuck it. Who cares?
[6:09] Jesse McAnally: Yeah. Um, literally in my note, it's a 22 minute short in front of that called Olaf's Frozen Adventure, which pissed everyone off. I just remember Twitter being a light. I'm like, what the fuck is this shit? It sucked.
[6:19] Andrew DeWolf: It was like a moment where it was like, did we walk into the wrong theater? Are we watching Frozen? And at D23 this last week, they announced Coco two and Frozen three and great. Wonderful. But Coco grows. I need a sequel.
[6:36] Jesse McAnally: I'm sorry. That's totally off. We'll get to it. We'll get to it. But Coco grossed $210.5 million in the United States and Canada and $611.9 million in other territories for a total of $823 million worldwide, nearly a billion for an original film, which is pretty cool.
[6:49] Andrew DeWolf: On the review aggregator website, Rotten Tomatoes, 97% of 359 critics reviews are positive with an average rating of 8.3 out of 10.
[7:01] Jesse McAnally: The consensus reads Coco's rich visuals, pleasures, and are matched by a thoughtful narrative that takes a family friendly and deeply affecting approach to questions of culture, family, life, and death.
[7:13] Andrew DeWolf: The plot of Coco is despite his family's baffling generations old ban on music, Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz.
[7:23] Jesse McAnally: Despite the desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in a stunning and colorful land of the dead following a mysterious chain of events.
[7:29] Andrew DeWolf: Along the way, he meets a charming trickster Hector and together they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel's family history.
[7:39] Jesse McAnally: So you saw this in theaters.
[7:45] Andrew DeWolf: I did I saw this in theaters and I think I've watched it two additional times since then because I did like it a lot.
[7:51] Jesse McAnally: I did not catch this in theaters. I just it was a busy time. I was in college doing things.
[7:58] Andrew DeWolf: Fair enough.
[7:59] Jesse McAnally: And I was too busy seeing garbage like Justice League, which I'm pretty sure came out around the same time.
[8:02] Andrew DeWolf: If you saw Justice League in place of this, you made a grave error.
[8:09] Jesse McAnally: I Yep. Yep. That is so far the first and only movie I've ever fully fallen asleep to in a theater.
[8:14] Andrew DeWolf: Oh, my God. I've never even done that. I have walked out of a movie before, but I have never fallen asleep in the theater.
[8:19] Jesse McAnally: What movie was it?
[8:21] Andrew DeWolf: House Bunny.
[8:22] Jesse McAnally: Really?
[8:26] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah. Well, that's like a fine middling comedy.
[8:30] Jesse McAnally: Um, my cousin wanted to see it, and he thought that it was going to have more like sexual stuff.
[8:34] Andrew DeWolf: And it's a Snow White remake.
[8:39] Jesse McAnally: Yeah. He's like, this is boring. And I was like, this kind of is boring. Let's leave. I was a teenager at the time.
[8:48] Andrew DeWolf: That's fine. And I guess saying the House Bunny is boring is more honest than it being just like shit, bro.
[8:54] Jesse McAnally: No, I didn't walk out because it was shit. It was boring. So I was like, all right, we're leaving.
[9:00] Andrew DeWolf: Um, and Coco is kind of like a musical on a technicality. It has more songs than most, most musical films, but like they aren't they're all diegetic within the world.
[9:09] Jesse McAnally: Yes. Which so it's not I mean, I think that that still counts because like, they're there and like, I don't know.
[9:14] Andrew DeWolf: But yeah, it's true that they don't really drive the plot. They kind of like, you could not remove the songs and tell the story.
[9:25] Jesse McAnally: Like, remember, it is so important for that climax. You couldn't but the songs themselves are not telling the story.
[9:31] Andrew DeWolf: No, they're just used to tell the story.
[9:37] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, I think I think it still counts, though. I think that it fits here.
[9:42] Andrew DeWolf: So yeah, I think it's good. Like it coming off of last week. I know we're we kind of avoided doing the Disney musicals for a long time on our original run.
[9:47] Jesse McAnally: And now it's time to do them. And I know these are two back to back. But if we're being real honest, we got a short week and we had to get something that we knew we had thoughts about.
[9:57] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah. And that's that's fine. And I think Coco merits a discussion, I think.
[10:04] Jesse McAnally: And we just had the announcement that there will be another one.
[10:08] Andrew DeWolf: And I see it's also appearing in Kingdom Hearts four.
[10:15] Jesse McAnally: So yes. So on the cheese wheel, we play Kingdom Hearts, of course, and Kingdom Hearts four.
[10:20] Andrew DeWolf: I cannot wait until Miguel is playing Remember Me for Alzheimer's granny. And we just have Goofy in the background in his idle animation stare.
[10:25] Jesse McAnally: That will be an all timer, dude. That'll be an all time. There are so many great shots in Kingdom Hearts where there's just something serious and horrific happening in the Pirates of the Caribbean.
[10:34] Andrew DeWolf: You see Goofy in the background idling, just kind of like what?
[10:46] Jesse McAnally: I mean, Coco suits that world about as good as Toy Story.
[10:51] Andrew DeWolf: I've never played Kingdom Hearts three where kind of they add all the different stuff.
[10:57] Jesse McAnally: What's the over under on them being like they're being a Star Wars level in Kingdom Hearts four?
[11:03] Andrew DeWolf: Oh, that seems likely now that you bring it up, because they did Pirates of the Caribbean, although they also did Tron.
[11:11] Jesse McAnally: Did they do like any Marvel stuff, though?
[11:16] Andrew DeWolf: No.
[11:17] Jesse McAnally: So that might be where the boundary is, where it's like Star Wars, Marvel. Those are like separate from Disney, whereas like Pirates of the Caribbean is based on a Disney ride.
[11:22] Andrew DeWolf: Tron is a Disney movie, like true Disney.
[11:28] Jesse McAnally: Yes. So not for Christmas is a Touchstone movie, technically.
[11:35] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah, but we all know that that's Disney, like.
[11:39] Jesse McAnally: Yeah. I mean, I would love a Who Framed Roger Rabbit level like, but no one ever listens.
[11:44] Andrew DeWolf: That will never happen.
[11:49] Jesse McAnally: It will never happen because they'd have to get permission from a thousand different the others. Spielberg. It just it won't happen as much as much as that would be the greatest fucking thing ever.
[11:55] Andrew DeWolf: It will never happen.
[12:03] Jesse McAnally: Did you cry the first time you watch this?
[12:07] Andrew DeWolf: You're not a crier, and I don't think you've ever cried at media.
[12:11] Jesse McAnally: No, I totally did.
[12:13] Andrew DeWolf: You did.
[12:14] Jesse McAnally: No, I totally did. And I actually am a crier.
[12:18] Andrew DeWolf: I did not know this.
[12:20] Jesse McAnally: Like what films make you cry?
[12:25] Andrew DeWolf: It's the sad dads, man. It's always the sad dads.
[12:31] Jesse McAnally: This one is a bit of an exception, but if I'm going to put it out there, this is a sad dad movie.
[12:37] Andrew DeWolf: All right. Hector is the sad dad. The sad great great granddad.
[12:43] Jesse McAnally: And I find this. That's the thing. It's he is the sad dad. He's not the sad dad to the main character, though. He's the sad dad to Coco.
[12:49] Andrew DeWolf: And also strange that this movie is called Coco.
[12:53] Jesse McAnally: It is an interesting thing, but I get why, because Coco is actually kind of the real core of the movie in a way, because she's the last person who remembers Hector.
[12:59] Andrew DeWolf: Sorry, huge spoilers. I hope I didn't just. I feel like everyone knows everyone's seen the sideways video. How have you not seen Coco? It's been 10 years.
[13:10] Jesse McAnally: And it's good. And everyone talked about it like it is truly like one of the last truly great original Pixar movies.
[13:16] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah. But yeah, I think Coco is kind of the heart of the movie in a way, even though she does not get very much screen time.
[13:20] Jesse McAnally: No, I didn't love when I first watched it in the first chunk where she's kind of treated as a joke.
[13:27] Andrew DeWolf: It kind of.
[13:28] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, I think what they're doing, though, is they're making it like you're not expecting it as much that she's going to be so important at the end.
[13:35] Andrew DeWolf: And what was called Coco? They very easily could have called this Remember Me if Robert Pattinson didn't ruin that for everyone.
[13:44] Jesse McAnally: Yeah.
[13:45] Andrew DeWolf: God, was that the 9-11?
[13:49] Jesse McAnally: Yes, it was.
[13:52] Andrew DeWolf: People act like that's a twist, but they were seeding that through that movie, like they're going to see American Pie 2 and a bunch of other things like and then it's just like.
[13:57] Andrew DeWolf: You know, they're in New York.
[13:59] Jesse McAnally: What do you feel like it's not?
[14:00] Andrew DeWolf: It's not that it's a twist.
[14:02] Jesse McAnally: It's that it's so tasteless.
[14:03] Andrew DeWolf: You don't expect them to actually do it.
[14:05] Jesse McAnally: There's no way.
[14:06] Andrew DeWolf: No way they're going to do it.
[14:08] Jesse McAnally: Like it's not actually a twist.
[14:10] Andrew DeWolf: It's more like, oh, they actually did it.
[14:16] Jesse McAnally: I think that this also... I love the way that he doesn't really know his grandma.
[14:23] Andrew DeWolf: And no, Coco is a cipher that no one really knows.
[14:28] Jesse McAnally: Hector.
[14:29] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah, but I mean, like Hector doesn't really know her. He knows her as, you know, this child that he's like put up on a pedestal.
[14:38] Jesse McAnally: Miguel doesn't really know her like in her true form because she's so gone from the Alzheimer's or whatever.
[14:45] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah, she's lost. She's not a human really, really there anymore.
[14:50] Jesse McAnally: Like she is a cipher.
[14:52] Andrew DeWolf: She's definitely still a human. Let's not do that.
[14:54] Jesse McAnally: Not that good point.
[14:59] Andrew DeWolf: She's not fully aware of her faculties. She's lost her kind of memories and thoughts and everything that she can't really express herself anymore.
[15:10] Jesse McAnally: She doesn't recognize her own daughter. Like it's really sad, but it's also used for humor early on.
[15:15] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah. But so I feel like even her daughter doesn't really know her because she doesn't know the whole aspect of that.
[15:23] Jesse McAnally: We learn where with the father.
[15:25] Andrew DeWolf: Yes. And the mother played by Alana Yubach.
[15:31] Jesse McAnally: She talks about Coco. She's like, I want to make sure Coco never knew you. But she doesn't really say anything about her or who she grew up to be or anything like that.
[15:40] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah, I don't know. It's not something and this is not a complaint. It's just something interesting.
[15:46] Jesse McAnally: Coco's the real character who's already been forgotten.
[15:49] Andrew DeWolf: Kind of in the movie. Kind of like Coco is not a person with agency or personhood as far as a character goes.
[16:01] Jesse McAnally: I hate to say it, but she is kind of a plot convenience. She is a ticking clock. She's the person who when she's gone, Hector dies.
[16:10] Andrew DeWolf: Yes. I guess let's talk about Miguel and Hector. I find this fascinating because it is not just like a musical, like we don't like music and he wants to learn how to. But it's also like that plus Back to the Future aspect of like meeting a younger version of your great-great-grandfather, where they're more peers than they ever were, like familial connective tissue.
[16:36] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, because I mean, if you actually met your great-great-grandfather, you would be like a child meeting someone in a wheelchair.
[16:44] Andrew DeWolf: Yes. Instead of, you know, a child meeting someone in their 30s.
[16:48] Jesse McAnally: Yeah. Well, I don't love that aspect about the world of the dead that they create, where they are all just the age that they were when they're dead. So this 30-year-old man is hugging his 97-year-old daughter. It's a little weird, but they become their bones and their bones age.
[17:06] Andrew DeWolf: So I yeah, I do. Do you remember when this film was about to come out and Disney tried to copyright Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead, both of them?
[17:18] Jesse McAnally: And you can't do that, bro.
[17:21] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah, and they were like, actually, that was real. That was a real thing they tried to do in preparation for this movie. Sometimes you forget that Disney is just another ridiculously evil corporation.
[17:33] Jesse McAnally: Do you forget that?
[17:35] Andrew DeWolf: Not often, but sometimes when you're watching the movie, you might be like, oh yeah, they love making fun family films. They're not a completely evil, soulless corporation that would copyright a fucking holiday that people celebrate.
[17:50] Jesse McAnally: As far as the narrative, we didn't talk about Ernesto de la Cruz. Ernesto de la Cruz, who I figure you love as far as a proper villain.
[18:00] Andrew DeWolf: I think he's great. I think he's great. I think it's really cool that his motivation stays clear through the whole thing. He's introduced as an incredibly ambitious person who's willing to throw everything away to get his dream accomplished.
[18:20] Jesse McAnally: Right. And he stays that way through the entire thing. It's just that when his dream is no longer reachable without ruining the lives of our main characters, well, now he has to ruin their lives.
[18:32] Andrew DeWolf: So it is very like evil by situational. Like he would never go out and try to do this. But you're in my fucking way, bro.
[18:41] Jesse McAnally: He clearly doesn't. Like when he first meets Miguel, he's like, oh yeah, this is my like he's part of my journey. He's helping me get more well-known because look at I have this kid. And isn't he amazing? Or like grandson, whatever he is, he amazing. And but then when he finds out, oh, no, it's not. Then all of a sudden everything turns.
[19:04] Andrew DeWolf: And it's like it's not this big twist of like, actually, I was secretly evil the whole time.
[19:09] Jesse McAnally: It's kind of is because he killed his great-grandfather.
[19:13] Andrew DeWolf: That's true. But that was just like a secret that he was keeping, you know, and like it makes sense that he would keep that secret.
[19:20] Jesse McAnally: Oh, it is stupid that he put that into his movie. That is the one thing where it's like, why the fuck did you do that? But it's a family movie. So I get it. They wanted to... It's we got to highlight the murder easily in this family picture.
[19:34] Andrew DeWolf: Also, it's I feel like it's not even that unrealistic. I feel like people that do bad things will sometimes like admit to it in ways, you know, like in real life, they'll do.
[19:44] Jesse McAnally: Yes, I did a lot of like serial killer research for Domino. And would you believe how many serial killers are just fucking idiots? Like the BTK got caught because he was like upset someone else was taking credit and he went and sent emails from like a very close library that had his information. And that's how he got caught.
[20:06] Andrew DeWolf: Fucking so fucking sometimes it's like, are they stupid or do they just want to get caught? Because like at that point, it's like if you're mad that someone else is getting credit, it's like literally you're upset that someone else is going to take the fall. Like what the hell are you upset about?
[20:22] Jesse McAnally: I don't know if you saw as far as Coco to like none of the other family members are confirmed being it. But, you know, who is confirmed is Ernesto de la Cruz.
[20:32] Andrew DeWolf: I mean, I suppose I suppose he would still be around. Like he won't go away until everyone forgets him. And honestly, even as a pariah, he's still going to be remembered.
[20:42] Jesse McAnally: So, yeah, I mean, I have one large question. And one of the things that bothers me like about media critics is when they review it for an audience that they are not like. I hate when people review children's movies as if they're a child and being like, I there was a local film critic that I watched review this film. It's like, I think, well, I follow the plot fine. I think a child would find this really confusing with this TSA stuff and like all these rules.
[21:13] Andrew DeWolf: And I'm like, well, did you find it confusing? I don't think the logic is that confusing.
[21:19] Jesse McAnally: No, I think it's very well explained. Also, I feel like people like to put stuff onto kids like they like to make them dumber than they are. I think kids can follow stuff. I mean, once you get to a certain age, I think they can follow things. And even if they can't, they kind of I think they'll get the like idea. They'll be like, oh, he can't go. I don't know why he can't go, but he can't go. They said he can't go.
[21:43] Andrew DeWolf: The only time that the logic bothered me and not even bothered me, but I was just confused about like what the stakes were. Ernesto tries to kill Miguel. If Miguel dies in the world of the dead, what happens?
[21:56] Jesse McAnally: I think it's just implied that he dies in real life.
[21:58] Andrew DeWolf: Does he die the second death because he's becoming bones slowly?
[22:02] Jesse McAnally: No, I don't think so. He'd have to get forgotten. I think it's just he actually becomes dead.
[22:06] Andrew DeWolf: I don't know. That part was a little weird. It was like kind of like, wait, so what actually happens? But it was a bit Back to the Future, like you brought up, where it's like he's like slowly becoming bones. Like it's like Marty fading away. And same with Hector slowly fading away because Coco's brain's gotten more and more deteriorated.
[22:26] Jesse McAnally: Yeah. All right. The second death is fucking terrifying. I just want to throw that out there. That scene was scary. Like even as an adult, I'm like, wait, so you die. There's an afterlife. But then when you're there, you can die again. And who the fuck like? So even after I'm dead and I'm like, oh, I guess there's an afterlife. That's sick. And then you still have to be like, wait. But the after afterlife, is that real? Like, are you fucking dead for real? For real?
[22:51] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah, I thought you were dead. You must be double dead.
[22:58] Jesse McAnally: On that note, let's go into a mid show.
[27:54] Andrew DeWolf: Own it on Disney DVD and Video this Tuesday.
[28:00] Jesse McAnally: Don't touch that doll!
[28:01] Andrew DeWolf: You know what's goin' on in this innocent-lookin' ranch?
[28:04] Jesse McAnally: Not a boy!
[28:05] Andrew DeWolf: And what's goin' on is evil, immoral, and against the law!
[28:11] Jesse McAnally: Everybody up!
[28:13] Andrew DeWolf: They say it's indecent.
[28:14] Jesse McAnally: They say they're gonna close it down.
[28:16] Andrew DeWolf: Because with Bert and Dolly, this much fun just couldn't be legal.
[28:19] Jesse McAnally: It's the best little h*** in Texas.
[28:22] Andrew DeWolf: A Universal Picture.
[28:23] Jesse McAnally: What the h*** is goin' on?
[28:26] Andrew DeWolf: Starts Friday at the Odeon Granville, Dunbar, West Van Odeon, Fraser West...
[28:34] Jesse McAnally: Andrew, it's time for everyone's favorite part of the show.
[28:38] Andrew DeWolf: Where you compare letterboxd reviews and have to tell me whether they're a 1-star, 5-star, based on nothing but the review alone.
[28:44] Jesse McAnally: It's time for Breeviews!
[28:46] Andrew DeWolf: It's time for Breeviews!
[28:51] Jesse McAnally: It's time for Breeviews!
[29:21] Andrew DeWolf: Thank you, thank you.
[29:22] Jesse McAnally: Yes, I'm sure everyone's, like, applauding graciously.
[29:26] Andrew DeWolf: Are you ready for the next one?
[29:27] Jesse McAnally: I am ready, of course.
[29:30] Andrew DeWolf: Sora is confirmed to be Latino!
[29:32] Jesse McAnally: 8 exclamation points.
[29:34] Andrew DeWolf: What is this, Kingdom Hearts 4 already?
[29:36] Jesse McAnally: Yes.
[29:36] Andrew DeWolf: I thought we were talking about Coco.
[29:39] Jesse McAnally: I guess someone got real excited about the announcement.
[29:41] Andrew DeWolf: Uh, Kingdom Hearts 4...
[29:43] Jesse McAnally: I mean, I think people have been waiting for Kingdom Hearts 4 for a bit, so I'm gonna say that's a...
[29:47] Andrew DeWolf: 5.
[29:48] Jesse McAnally: That is correct!
[29:51] Andrew DeWolf: I don't think Sora is Latino, though, I'm sorry.
[29:53] Jesse McAnally: Then how is he in the Land of the Dead?
[29:55] Andrew DeWolf: I just don't think it's...
[29:56] Jesse McAnally: Is it implied that you can't get to the Land of the Dead if you're not Latino?
[30:00] Andrew DeWolf: I mean...
[30:00] Jesse McAnally: Or Latina?
[30:01] Andrew DeWolf: Wouldn't your face have to be up on an ofrenda?
[30:04] Jesse McAnally: I mean, have you put your relatives up on an ofrenda?
[30:07] Andrew DeWolf: See, I don't think that that's necessary.
[30:09] Jesse McAnally: I think the idea is you can't leave the Land of the Dead if your face is not up on an ofrenda.
[30:14] Andrew DeWolf: Oh.
[30:15] Jesse McAnally: I think you could still be there.
[30:17] Andrew DeWolf: I mean, Hector has been there, right?
[30:20] Jesse McAnally: You make points.
[30:21] Andrew DeWolf: Alright, we gotta move on.
[30:24] Jesse McAnally: Alright, stupid movie made my GF cry.
[30:27] Andrew DeWolf: Angry face.
[30:30] Jesse McAnally: I'm sorry, but this is Coco, and if it made your GF cry, you liked it, it's a 5.
[30:33] Andrew DeWolf: That is a 1, you were wrong, sir.
[30:36] Jesse McAnally: Motherfucker, who gives Coco a 1, dude?
[30:39] Andrew DeWolf: I don't know, these people are crazy.
[30:41] Jesse McAnally: Next one!
[30:42] Andrew DeWolf: These people are in Poco Loco.
[30:44] Jesse McAnally: I miss my dad so much.
[30:46] Andrew DeWolf: Sad dad- See, that's what I'm talking about!
[30:48] Jesse McAnally: 5.
[30:49] Andrew DeWolf: That is correct!
[30:51] Jesse McAnally: I told you it was a sad dad movie.
[30:53] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah, you're right.
[30:54] Jesse McAnally: Um, next!
[30:56] Andrew DeWolf: This is all in caps, by the way.
[30:58] Jesse McAnally: I'm gonna try to bring the energy.
[30:59] Andrew DeWolf: Sure, sure.
[31:00] Jesse McAnally: I watched this movie over 30 times, I am sick of it in Poco Loco!
[31:03] Andrew DeWolf: Get out of my head, get out of my head, get out of my head!
[31:06] Jesse McAnally: Get out of my head, get out of my head, get out of my head!
[31:09] Andrew DeWolf: Get out of my head, man, get out of my head!
[31:13] Jesse McAnally: Uh, that's a 5, that's a 5.
[31:15] Andrew DeWolf: You watched it 30 times?
[31:17] Jesse McAnally: That's- that's a 1, I was also baffled by that.
[31:21] Andrew DeWolf: Why'd you watch it 30 fucking times?!
[31:24] Jesse McAnally: Alright, last one.
[31:26] Andrew DeWolf: Okay.
[31:26] Jesse McAnally: This movie seriously messed me up.
[31:29] Andrew DeWolf: Fuck, that's gotta be a 5.
[31:30] Jesse McAnally: I'm sorry, I'm giving them all 5s, but it's Coco.
[31:33] Andrew DeWolf: That was a 1, so you are wrong, sir!
[31:36] Jesse McAnally: How did you find so many 1 stars?
[31:39] Andrew DeWolf: This is crazy!
[31:40] Jesse McAnally: There was a lot of just like, this is the movie everyone's really talking about how much they love.
[31:45] Andrew DeWolf: I'll get it.
[31:46] Jesse McAnally: Dude, contrarianism is straight up just a fucking cancer, I'm sorry.
[31:50] Andrew DeWolf: I mean, we kind of started as contrarians with like our Dear Evan Hansen shit.
[31:54] Jesse McAnally: I don't think that was contrarianism, I think we were right about that.
[31:57] Andrew DeWolf: Just like, flat out.
[31:58] Jesse McAnally: I think time proved us right about that one.
[32:00] Andrew DeWolf: I don't think we were just being contrarian, and I think we had plenty of opinions that were just totally like, with the mainstream.
[32:06] Jesse McAnally: It was like, we had two that were not.
[32:08] Andrew DeWolf: It was like, Rent and Dear Evan Hansen.
[32:11] Jesse McAnally: I- I- I think that um, Octet is another one that's gonna bite us in the ass.
[32:15] Andrew DeWolf: Especially because Lin-Manuel Miranda's making a movie out of it.
[32:19] Jesse McAnally: That was a really unpopular episode that really pissed people off.
[32:23] Andrew DeWolf: And now I feel like that's gonna bring a lot more heat to that episode.
[32:26] Jesse McAnally: We should revisit it.
[32:27] Andrew DeWolf: We should revisit it.
[32:28] Jesse McAnally: Maybe we've changed our opinions to match the mainstream.
[32:31] Andrew DeWolf: I doubt it though, I feel like we're probably gonna say the same shit.
[32:34] Jesse McAnally: I don't know, maybe it is all about like, performance with that show.
[32:38] Andrew DeWolf: And seeing it like, in context with actors.
[32:41] Jesse McAnally: I don't know.
[32:42] Andrew DeWolf: If it's such an unpopular episode, we should-
[32:43] Jesse McAnally: We'll meet up, we'll see it live.
[32:46] Andrew DeWolf: Well, the movie's coming out, so we'll just go see the movie in theaters.
[32:49] Jesse McAnally: We'll see the movie in theaters.
[32:50] Andrew DeWolf: It's the way it was meant to be seen.
[32:52] Jesse McAnally: And we'll talk shit about it.
[32:53] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah.
[32:54] Jesse McAnally: And maybe it'll be great.
[32:55] Andrew DeWolf: We like Tick Tick Boom.
[32:57] Jesse McAnally: And I think our um, episode on the movie is better than our episode on the musical.
[33:01] Andrew DeWolf: That's true.
[33:02] Jesse McAnally: I think the movie was better in that case as well.
[33:04] Andrew DeWolf: I think that's like, one of three cases where the movie is better than the musical.
[33:08] Jesse McAnally: Can you name the other two for me?
[33:10] Andrew DeWolf: Um...
[33:11] Jesse McAnally: Actually, I think there's four.
[33:13] Andrew DeWolf: Little Shop of Horrors.
[33:14] Jesse McAnally: That's one, yep.
[33:15] Andrew DeWolf: Um...
[33:16] Jesse McAnally: Jeez, I want to say In the Heights, but I'm not sure if you'd agree with that.
[33:19] Andrew DeWolf: I would not particularly agree with that, but I know you would, so I'll count that.
[33:24] Jesse McAnally: Jeez, that's tough.
[33:24] Andrew DeWolf: That's tough.
[33:25] Jesse McAnally: Certainly not like-
[33:26] Andrew DeWolf: Definitely not Sweeney Todd.
[33:28] Jesse McAnally: Definitely not like-
[33:29] Andrew DeWolf: I appreciate that movie, but it's not better than the original.
[33:31] Jesse McAnally: No, not-
[33:32] Andrew DeWolf: Definitely not.
[33:33] Jesse McAnally: It's worse than the original, but it's still like, watchable.
[33:36] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah.
[33:36] Jesse McAnally: Um...
[33:37] Andrew DeWolf: It's doing something.
[33:38] Jesse McAnally: It's like, taking a swing.
[33:40] Andrew DeWolf: I think you're gonna have to give me some help here.
[33:42] Jesse McAnally: I don't think I got the other ones.
[33:43] Andrew DeWolf: Okay.
[33:43] Jesse McAnally: Um...
[33:44] Andrew DeWolf: I think-
[33:44] Jesse McAnally: I'm just gonna give them to you, because these are my big opinions.
[33:48] Andrew DeWolf: Um...
[33:49] Jesse McAnally: One of them is Fiddler on the Roof.
[33:50] Andrew DeWolf: I think that is better as a film than it ever was as a musical.
[33:53] Jesse McAnally: And like, the- you know, that's fair too, because the movie is three hours long, so you're really not missing anything either.
[33:59] Andrew DeWolf: Well, also, you have John Williams, like, orchestrating the fucking movie, and those orchestrations are impossible to live up to on stage.
[34:08] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, that's true.
[34:08] Andrew DeWolf: That's true.
[34:09] Jesse McAnally: Then you have the Sound of Music, which just restructures the entire thing.
[34:13] Andrew DeWolf: I didn't think of that.
[34:13] Jesse McAnally: I should have thought of that one.
[34:15] Andrew DeWolf: That's an obvious one.
[34:16] Jesse McAnally: And it is-
[34:17] Andrew DeWolf: Okay.
[34:17] Jesse McAnally: So, Tick Tick Boom, Sound of Music, um...
[34:20] Andrew DeWolf: Little Shop of Horrors, and, um...
[34:23] Jesse McAnally: Fiddler on the Roof.
[34:23] Andrew DeWolf: That's my four.
[34:24] Jesse McAnally: Okay.
[34:25] Andrew DeWolf: Okay.
[34:25] Jesse McAnally: And it's hard to get into that four, but maybe Octet will do it.
[34:29] Andrew DeWolf: It's possible.
[34:30] Jesse McAnally: Um...
[34:31] Andrew DeWolf: You want to talk a bit about the TSA element to this.
[34:34] Jesse McAnally: I think it's just worth noting, because I know it's been a thing that people have discussed.
[34:38] Andrew DeWolf: Mm-hmm.
[34:40] Jesse McAnally: It's kind of a weird thing, especially now, where you have the movie-
[34:45] Andrew DeWolf: Why? Is politics weird?
[34:47] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, politics is weird.
[34:48] Andrew DeWolf: You have a movie that's based in Mexican culture, and a big plot point of the movie is border control.
[34:55] Jesse McAnally: It's, you know, it's kind of stupid that it's like that, but it is like that.
[35:03] Andrew DeWolf: And, um...
[35:04] Jesse McAnally: Yeah.
[35:05] Andrew DeWolf: I don't know if you have thoughts on that or not.
[35:06] Jesse McAnally: I do, but, like, not even in the representation, because I get that that's just part of real life.
[35:11] Andrew DeWolf: Um...
[35:12] Jesse McAnally: I think it gets more pointed when you remember that when, uh...
[35:16] Andrew DeWolf: In Donald Trump's first, uh, tyrannical administration, when they were putting children in cages at, like, empty Walmarts in the South.
[35:24] Jesse McAnally: Mm-hmm.
[35:24] Andrew DeWolf: Because of, you know, border security.
[35:28] Jesse McAnally: Um...
[35:28] Andrew DeWolf: In the cages, they said that, no, no, they weren't being abused because they had a movie night.
[35:33] Jesse McAnally: We showed Coco last Friday.
[35:35] Andrew DeWolf: Oh, boy.
[35:36] Jesse McAnally: And I'm just like, that is America.
[35:39] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah.
[35:39] Jesse McAnally: I just, I feel like if you're putting children in prison, in any sense, even if they're not, like, literally in, like, dog cages or whatever the imagery brings up.
[35:47] Andrew DeWolf: If you're putting them in a prison, you gotta think to yourself, like, what did I, where did I go wrong?
[35:51] Jesse McAnally: You know, like, where did I go wrong in my...
[35:53] Andrew DeWolf: Are we the baddies?
[35:55] Jesse McAnally: You know?
[35:57] Andrew DeWolf: And, uh, I don't think, uh, I don't think America has what it takes to self-reflect in any meaningful way, so...
[36:04] Jesse McAnally: Never. We've won every war and we've always been on the right side.
[36:07] Andrew DeWolf: Speaking of always being on the right side, let's talk about the songs.
[36:09] Jesse McAnally: Um...
[36:10] Andrew DeWolf: Absolutely.
[36:10] Jesse McAnally: Remember Me.
[36:12] Andrew DeWolf: Remember me.
[36:15] Jesse McAnally: Though I have to say goodbye, remember me.
[36:19] Andrew DeWolf: Don't let it make you cry, for even if I'm far away, I hold you in my heart.
[36:25] Jesse McAnally: I sing a secret song to you each night we are apart, remember me.
[36:30] Andrew DeWolf: Though I have to travel far, remember me.
[36:33] Jesse McAnally: Each time you hear a sad guitar, know that I'm with you the only way that I can be.
[36:40] Andrew DeWolf: Until you're in my arms again, remember me.
[36:45] Jesse McAnally: Here is my bold take.
[37:00] Andrew DeWolf: You might have the same one as me, then.
[37:02] Jesse McAnally: I love the very fun, or the very beautiful, like, variations of this one.
[37:08] Andrew DeWolf: He's singing to his daughter and he's singing with Coco.
[37:11] Jesse McAnally: The Ernest De La Cruz one, though.
[37:14] Andrew DeWolf: Okay, I have a playlist of songs that I like, that I listen to a lot.
[37:18] Jesse McAnally: And one, two songs from Coco made it on that playlist.
[37:22] Andrew DeWolf: And one of them is the Ernesto De La Cruz version of Remember Me.
[37:26] Jesse McAnally: It's just such a bouncy, great number, and I guess...
[37:30] Andrew DeWolf: It's so fucking good!
[37:32] Jesse McAnally: And I love the idea that he reinterpreted it to be more, like, about, like, just women.
[37:37] Andrew DeWolf: Like, he's like, he's like sleeping around and he's like, ah, remember me!
[37:42] Jesse McAnally: And, uh, I think it's fun.
[37:44] Andrew DeWolf: And I, obviously, it's um, in the context of the movie, it's more, like, gross when you realize, like, what the song is actually supposed to be about.
[37:52] Jesse McAnally: It's sold out.
[37:53] Andrew DeWolf: But it's still, like, it's just such a fun fucking song.
[37:56] Jesse McAnally: It's like, what are you gonna do?
[37:58] Andrew DeWolf: And then he hits the harmony and the fucking bell kills his ass.
[38:01] Jesse McAnally: Like, that's funny, so.
[38:03] Andrew DeWolf: I think the bell thing is ridiculous, like, as far as, like, a death, but I guess they gotta try to keep death light and funny for a good chunk of this.
[38:12] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, and honestly, it's, it's fun.
[38:14] Andrew DeWolf: It's, and it's a funny way for him to die because it's like, he's doing this big performance, it's right at the end, and he just dies.
[38:20] Jesse McAnally: It's funny, it's funny. I like it.
[38:22] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah, I mean, all versions of Remember Me are good, but my favorite is still, um, the Ernesto De La Cruz.
[38:28] Jesse McAnally: Honestly, if I'm being real, the worst, like, version to just listen to is the one that Miguel performs at the big, like, the climax, basically.
[38:36] Andrew DeWolf: But that's the one I listen to the most.
[38:38] Jesse McAnally: I'm not even gonna lie.
[38:40] Andrew DeWolf: It's, like, painful to listen to on its own.
[38:42] Jesse McAnally: It's sad.
[38:43] Andrew DeWolf: I feel like I want the context.
[38:44] Jesse McAnally: You want the context before you listen to that.
[38:46] Andrew DeWolf: It's just, it's, it's the scene I rewatch, I guess is more what I mean to say.
[38:50] Jesse McAnally: Okay.
[38:51] Andrew DeWolf: Um, let's move on to Un Poco Loco.
[38:55] Jesse McAnally: Un Poco Loco.
[39:26] Andrew DeWolf: Un Poco Loco!
[39:30] Jesse McAnally: Un Poco Loco is a bop.
[39:33] Andrew DeWolf: Um, it's just a really fun one.
[39:36] Jesse McAnally: It doesn't really, I mean, it doesn't really have any plot relevance.
[39:39] Andrew DeWolf: It's just a super fucking fun song.
[39:41] Jesse McAnally: You should put your shoes on your head.
[39:43] Andrew DeWolf: I guess that the plot relevance of it is that when he's performing it, because this is him, like, gaining his confidence to perform, I'm pretty sure.
[39:50] Jesse McAnally: Um, yeah, this is, this is that, yeah.
[39:52] Andrew DeWolf: One of my favorite details is that he, even after giving, like, a really good performance, he does not win the contest.
[39:57] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, I mean, honestly, I don't think he deserved it.
[40:00] Andrew DeWolf: I mean, that's fine.
[40:01] Jesse McAnally: That other band was better.
[40:02] Andrew DeWolf: The other band was better.
[40:03] Jesse McAnally: He was still, like, he's a beginner.
[40:05] Andrew DeWolf: He put on a great show, but it's, like, that doesn't mean you win.
[40:08] Jesse McAnally: You don't get kid points.
[40:10] Andrew DeWolf: You're up against real professionals.
[40:12] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, and the real professionals let him, let him, you know.
[40:15] Andrew DeWolf: Sneak in.
[40:16] Jesse McAnally: Sneak in anyways, so it's just fun.
[40:18] Andrew DeWolf: I think that there's a lot of easy tropes that they could have fallen into that they just avoid.
[40:25] Jesse McAnally: Yes.
[40:26] Andrew DeWolf: The, like, him winning, being one of them.
[40:28] Jesse McAnally: Like, him just, like, oh, I entered and I won because I'm the most passionate little kid ever.
[40:33] Andrew DeWolf: I'm the best.
[40:35] Jesse McAnally: In the commentary for Lisa Frankenstein, Zelda Williams says,
[40:41] Andrew DeWolf: I'm really sick of this exceptionalism in movies and media where if we see a character, because they're the main character, they have to be the best at everything, and they're the number one most talented person.
[40:51] Jesse McAnally: So I intentionally, like, made her a shitty artist and not a good singer.
[40:55] Andrew DeWolf: You know what movie we recently watched that had that?
[40:58] Jesse McAnally: What?
[40:59] Andrew DeWolf: Fucking Moana 2.
[41:01] Jesse McAnally: What?
[41:02] Andrew DeWolf: Moana is just so fucking good at, like, everything.
[41:04] Jesse McAnally: Like, she goes into the town and they're like, oh, you're, like, the best at this, and you're the best at this, and you're the best at this.
[41:07] Andrew DeWolf: It's like, dude, what the fuck, man?
[41:11] Jesse McAnally: That wasn't what it was like in the first one.
[41:13] Andrew DeWolf: No, she fucked up a lot in that first one.
[41:15] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, but in the second one, it's just like, oh, yeah, she's so good at everything.
[41:17] Andrew DeWolf: She kills God and becomes God.
[41:19] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, I don't know.
[41:20] Andrew DeWolf: Whatever.
[41:21] Jesse McAnally: OK.
[41:22] Andrew DeWolf: Coco doesn't do that, so it's good.
[41:23] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, Coco is better than Moana 2.
[41:25] Andrew DeWolf: What a hard take you got there.
[41:26] Jesse McAnally: Hot take.
[41:27] Andrew DeWolf: Coco's better than Moana 1.
[41:29] Jesse McAnally: Is that a hot take?
[41:30] Andrew DeWolf: Oh, that might be.
[41:31] Jesse McAnally: It's true.
[41:32] Andrew DeWolf: I think it's true.
[41:33] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, I think you're right.
[41:34] Andrew DeWolf: I had to think about it.
[41:36] Jesse McAnally: Like, I had to, like, really wait.
[41:38] Andrew DeWolf: But I love Moana.
[41:39] Jesse McAnally: Like, Moana 1, I still think, is great.
[41:41] Andrew DeWolf: No, it's good.
[41:42] Jesse McAnally: It's very good.
[41:43] Andrew DeWolf: But I feel like, well, Moana, for our purposes, I think we have to say Moana's better because it's an actual musical.
[41:48] Jesse McAnally: I mean, I don't give things points for being good.
[41:52] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, you do. That's why we have the show.
[41:56] Andrew DeWolf: No, no, like a musical is bad. Like, have you seen the news about 10 Things I Hate About You, the musical? No. Is that written? Wait, wait, wait, wait. This feels like a mad libs thing.
[42:07] Jesse McAnally: Okay. Okay. Written by Lena Dunham with a score by Carly Rae Jepsen.
[42:12] Andrew DeWolf: What the fuck? Not every 90s film needs to be a musical, for one. And why them?
[42:19] Jesse McAnally: Maybe it's a passion project.
[42:21] Andrew DeWolf: No! Okay, I might eat my tongue if it's good. But it just reminds me of Bad Cinderella written by Emerald Fennell and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
[42:30] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, yeah. That did not turn out very well.
[42:34] Andrew DeWolf: What are you talking about? Everyone loves Cinderella or Bad Cinderella or whatever. I love that he called it Bad Cinderella so you don't even have to make the joke that it's the bad one.
[42:44] Jesse McAnally: He took it right out of our mouths. And as far as other songs, really, we can talk about La Llorona. La Llorona is the other song that made it on my playlist.
[42:56] Andrew DeWolf: Okay. This song fucking bangs, dude. Holy shit.
[43:43] Jesse McAnally: It's great. It's a great sequence. I don't know. It didn't hit with me the way it is.
[44:12] Andrew DeWolf: And I like Alana Eubach. Have you ever watched the TED TV show?
[44:17] Jesse McAnally: No, no. That's the teddy bear?
[44:19] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah. I get it. I get exactly why most people... I think that show's actually pretty fun. And most of it is because of Alana Eubach's very sincere performance as the mom.
[44:30] Jesse McAnally: Okay.
[44:32] Andrew DeWolf: Truly, I could give a shit about the teddy bear side of it. It's everyone else on that show.
[44:38] Jesse McAnally: I've never watched much of American Dad, but that's what people say is a good part of that show.
[44:43] Andrew DeWolf: I think I have a thing with Seth MacFarlane where I just don't want to see... It's not even like I have an issue with him. I just don't want to see anything with him in it. I just don't care.
[44:51] Jesse McAnally: You picked on the cheese wheel for us to cover the Family Guy Star Warses.
[44:55] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah, because I found that that was an interesting, nostalgic thing to watch. But going forward, I don't give a fuck about Seth MacFarlane.
[45:03] Jesse McAnally: Are you going to listen to the Seth MacFarlane Muppets album that he's releasing?
[45:07] Andrew DeWolf: Straight up, no. I don't think I am. I just don't want to listen to Seth MacFarlane.
[45:11] Jesse McAnally: I do, but I don't listen to Seth MacFarlane.
[45:12] Andrew DeWolf: And he's singing some deep cuts.
[45:14] Jesse McAnally: That's fine.
[45:15] Andrew DeWolf: Including your favorite, the Gonzo song from the Muppet movie.
[45:18] Jesse McAnally: Seth MacFarlane feels like a real-life Deadpool, where he just likes to make references to things, and he thinks that that's funny as hell, and it's just like it's not that funny. I'm really not a Deadpool fan for that reason, where it's like all the jokes are just references to things. It's like, I don't know.
[45:37] Andrew DeWolf: What are you talking about? Deadpool is your favorite.
[45:40] Jesse McAnally: He fought Wolverine.
[45:42] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah.
[45:42] Jesse McAnally: I mean, it's wacky because you come from the Doug Walker school of internet.
[45:47] Andrew DeWolf: I don't have the sense of humor of Doug Walker, though. Not anymore.
[45:50] Jesse McAnally: I've evolved beyond, what if Batman met Mario?
[45:55] Andrew DeWolf: What if they did, though? Have you considered the implications?
[45:59] Jesse McAnally: They probably wouldn't say anything to each other. Why would they?
[46:02] Andrew DeWolf: One of them is a plumber, and the other one's Batman.
[46:05] Jesse McAnally: I need you to fix my plumbing, Mario.
[46:07] Andrew DeWolf: Oh, mama mia.
[46:08] Jesse McAnally: Okay.
[46:10] Andrew DeWolf: Give it a go.
[46:12] Jesse McAnally: Now, I have a question for you. If you found out, and you had a whole adventure in the Land of the Dead, would you go about life differently knowing that there was an afterlife?
[46:24] Andrew DeWolf: Yes, because I understand the rules. I know about second death. What I would do is do something so crazy that no one could ever forget me, and then I would get to live forever in the afterlife, at least until humanity ends.
[46:37] Jesse McAnally: When the nukes go off, how will you go see the El Frienda?
[46:41] Andrew DeWolf: There won't be one. Well, I mean, I think the idea is in the afterlife, once all the humans are... Once every human is dead, the afterlife just stops existing because there's no remembering at all, right?
[46:53] Jesse McAnally: Remember me.
[46:55] Andrew DeWolf: So I would probably do something nuts. I would like... God, I'd have to think of what it would be. It'd have to be something crazy. But I wouldn't want it to be bad, though, because I don't want to be remembered as, like, the bad guy. I want to be remembered as, like, the guy that everyone loves, you know?
[47:10] Jesse McAnally: Oh, in my heart, you are a man that I love.
[47:15] Andrew DeWolf: You see, and I'll get to live until you're dead in the afterlife, which won't be very long, I don't think.
[47:21] Jesse McAnally: Who do you think's going to outlive the other?
[47:22] Andrew DeWolf: God, this is a thing that we could actually, like... Someone will be able to verify who was right eventually.
[47:28] Jesse McAnally: Yeah. Who will be the one to speak at the other's eulogy?
[47:32] Andrew DeWolf: God, is it mean, but I think it's going to be me.
[47:35] Jesse McAnally: I think the same thing, and it's a bummer to think about, but yeah.
[47:39] Andrew DeWolf: I don't know why. I don't know why.
[47:41] Jesse McAnally: And that was also my gut feeling.
[47:44] Andrew DeWolf: It literally was a gut feeling. I think I'll be old, though. I don't think it'll be soon.
[47:49] Jesse McAnally: I think we'll be sad in our 50s, and you'll be like, Who? What? Okay, okay, I'll go.
[47:55] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah.
[47:55] Jesse McAnally: Will we make it to the Merrily We Roll Along movie, though?
[47:59] Andrew DeWolf: God, when is that supposed to come out?
[48:00] Jesse McAnally: 2040.
[48:01] Andrew DeWolf: 2040? We'll make it. We'll make it.
[48:03] Jesse McAnally: Okay, okay. Will we do an episode?
[48:05] Andrew DeWolf: Because of that, you'll have a reason to live.
[48:10] Jesse McAnally: Andrew, what is your overall thoughts on Disney Pixar's Coco and your cheese rating?
[48:17] Andrew DeWolf: Disney Pixar's Coco is very good. I don't think that's a controversial opinion, and I bet you everyone listening has already seen it and already know that. But sometimes you want to listen to a podcast where they just say the things that you already believe, and that's what we're here for. Sometimes.
[48:34] Jesse McAnally: Sometimes. And then sometimes we get in here, and they're like, Whoa, what?
[48:38] Andrew DeWolf: I mean, I think Bigby comes on because he wants to hear what he already believes, but comes with coming from your mouth.
[48:44] Jesse McAnally: It's true. It's true.
[48:46] Andrew DeWolf: And occasionally I interrupt, and he's like, Shut up, other guy.
[48:49] Jesse McAnally: It is bizarre that we found a guest that agrees with me most of the time.
[48:53] Andrew DeWolf: It's been a lot of them. Let's not even pretend it hasn't been.
[48:56] Jesse McAnally: I think I just maybe have the more sane opinions most of the time.
[48:59] Andrew DeWolf: I think that I just have a more verified taste in garbage.
[49:04] Jesse McAnally: Anyways, for a cheese rating, I'm going to give it one of those elaborate Dia de los Muertos skulls, but like a cheese, the cheese in the shape of the skull. You know what I'm saying?
[49:15] Andrew DeWolf: I do. And we recommend Coco, obviously.
[49:18] Jesse McAnally: Oh, of course.
[49:19] Andrew DeWolf: Do you have any predictions for Coco 2? Do you think they're going to ask Anthony Gonzalez to reprise his role as Miguel? Because he is really most of the reason why this movie works.
[49:25] Jesse McAnally: If they don't, it's going to suck. That's all I can say there. Unless they find another once in a generation talented child.
[49:36] Andrew DeWolf: I do not know what they're going to do straight up. This is a movie that just does not need a sequel. It just ends. The soul of the film is solved at the end.
[49:48] Jesse McAnally: Like what conflict continues to exist other than, I guess.
[49:54] Andrew DeWolf: Ernesto de la Cruz.
[49:56] Jesse McAnally: Ernesto de la Cruz is still technically a lot dead, dead alive. You know what I mean?
[50:01] Andrew DeWolf: He's around like that's not like that's not a conflict, really. Like him still existing, isn't it?
[50:08] Jesse McAnally: Are we going to do like a fucking revenge plot where he comes back and is like trying to...
[50:13] Andrew DeWolf: That's stupid, though.
[50:16] Jesse McAnally: I'm going to kill you, Miguel. No, don't kill me.
[50:20] Andrew DeWolf: If anything, a plot where he like redeems himself would be more interesting. But I don't want to see that.
[50:27] Jesse McAnally: Um, and on that note, my cheese rating is a cheesy tamale sauce, which is a thing. And man, that sounds real good to write about now.
[50:39] Andrew DeWolf: No, thank you guys for listening. Andrew, any other things you got to say about Coco or the future of Disney Pixar in general?
[50:47] Jesse McAnally: They need to stop making sequels.
[50:49] Andrew DeWolf: I know this is a super common opinion, but it's just correct. Like we need more.
[50:53] Jesse McAnally: Their original stuff is just better.
[50:55] Andrew DeWolf: I mean, we're talking about Moana and Coco, both of which came out like what, 10 years ago? And like they were both really good.
[51:03] Jesse McAnally: And Moana 2 sucked butt.
[51:05] Andrew DeWolf: Coco 2, maybe it won't suck, but I'm just not that interested. Like it's like I'm not like it's not a movie that I'm like, oh man, I can't wait to see that. Like, you know, maybe it'll be good.
[51:14] Jesse McAnally: Can I be like pretend? I'm still kind of pumped for Incredibles 3, even though Incredibles 2 kind of sucked.
[51:20] Andrew DeWolf: Oh, geez, they're doing Incredibles 3.
[51:22] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, they announced that too.
[51:24] Andrew DeWolf: I really did not like Incredibles 2. Like I'm not.
[51:26] Jesse McAnally: You really like that image of Violet squirting water off her nose.
[51:30] Andrew DeWolf: That was funny. But the movie I really, really did not like.
[51:35] Jesse McAnally: OK, before we wrap up, I do want to see if you can do a ranking for me.
[51:40] Andrew DeWolf: Sure.
[51:41] Jesse McAnally: What do we got?
[51:41] Andrew DeWolf: We are going to rank all of the Bobby Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez musicals that we've covered so far.
[51:48] Jesse McAnally: OK, you're going to have to refresh me on some of these, but like I think I can do that.
[51:53] Andrew DeWolf: All right.
[51:54] Jesse McAnally: We're going to start from the first one, Avenue Q.
[51:56] Andrew DeWolf: Avenue Q.
[51:57] Jesse McAnally: All right.
[51:58] Andrew DeWolf: I think Avenue Q is going to get like a B.
[52:01] Jesse McAnally: OK, you were really down on that in our episode.
[52:04] Andrew DeWolf: You also had a really bad day that day.
[52:07] Jesse McAnally: I think looking back on it, I was probably too harsh. I think it's a B.
[52:10] Andrew DeWolf: OK, OK. We're going to follow that up with Finding Nemo, the musical.
[52:16] Jesse McAnally: God, that was the like theme park one, right?
[52:18] Andrew DeWolf: Yes.
[52:19] Jesse McAnally: That's a C.
[52:21] Andrew DeWolf: All right. I think there's stuff there. I think there's stuff there. That's why it's not D. But then we've got Book of Mormon.
[52:28] Jesse McAnally: Book of Mormon.
[52:29] Andrew DeWolf: I know it's controversial now and everything, but Book of Mormon gets an A.
[52:32] Jesse McAnally: I mean.
[52:33] Andrew DeWolf: All right. All right. All right. Then we have Frozen, both the movie, which we covered on Disney with cheese, Disney plus cheese, and we also covered the stage musical Frozen.
[52:46] Jesse McAnally: I think Frozen gets an A. I think the movie gets an A. And I think the stage show gets, I'd say, probably a C.
[52:52] Andrew DeWolf: Man, I really hated that Frozen musical and I saw it for free and I did not love it.
[52:57] Jesse McAnally: The stage show or the movie?
[52:59] Andrew DeWolf: The stage show.
[53:00] Jesse McAnally: OK, because the movie was like the movie's fine, right?
[53:03] Andrew DeWolf: We haven't covered it, but I also think that Frozen 2 is like terror bad.
[53:08] Jesse McAnally: Frozen 2, the movie?
[53:09] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah, that's different, though.
[53:11] Jesse McAnally: And where does Coco fall on this?
[53:13] Andrew DeWolf: Coco is an A, easily.
[53:15] Jesse McAnally: Easily the best of the A.
[53:16] Andrew DeWolf: OK.
[53:17] Jesse McAnally: All right. So let me go through your ranking. Tell me if you agree. We have Coco, Book of Mormon, Frozen, Avenue Q, Finding Nemo, the musical, and Frozen, the stage show.
[53:26] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah, I think that's about right. I mean, what would you what would you say different?
[53:29] Jesse McAnally: I think that's fair. I think I'd probably... Yeah, no, that's about right. Like, I don't know. I just I feel like we're grading on a curve, obviously.
[53:39] Andrew DeWolf: It's their shows only. We're not ranking it based on anything against anything else.
[53:44] Jesse McAnally: Now, if it was against other things, I'd probably... I mean, Avenue Q would probably be lower as well as Frozen as well as the like. If we're just ranking it against itself, I mean, I think that's fair.
[53:54] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah, and I've not seen like we're not ranking like the Broadway bro down episode of South Park or anything like that with it or the WandaVision like stuff, which I've not seen the WandaVision like we've seen some of those.
[54:07] Jesse McAnally: I've not seen WandaVision.
[54:08] Andrew DeWolf: I've seen the Broadway bro down, and I think that's probably a C.
[54:12] Jesse McAnally: Really?
[54:14] Andrew DeWolf: I don't know. I don't remember that episode fondly.
[54:17] Jesse McAnally: I don't either. I remember thinking it's really funny that they have Steven Sondheim like in a jersey.
[54:23] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah, no, I think the concept of it was funny. I think the execution was.
[54:27] Jesse McAnally: You didn't like the blowjob humor?
[54:30] Andrew DeWolf: God, I think South Park does this a lot where it's like the concept is funny and then they execute it in the like laziest way possible. And I think that's a lot of the time because they put they rush it so fucking much.
[54:43] Jesse McAnally: Yeah, it's like if you thought this through a little more, this might have been better, but it's like it was so lazy.
[54:48] Andrew DeWolf: Yeah.
[54:49] Jesse McAnally: All right. We will see you next week on Musicals with Cheese, everyone.
[54:52] Andrew DeWolf: Bye.
