About

Cal Calamia is a bilingual, non-binary transmasculine runner, author, educator, and activist. He recently made history as the first non-binary winner of both Bay to Breakers and the San Francisco Marathon— a feat made possible by my work in sports activism. He has since won the 2023 New York City Marathon and taken 2nd place in the 2022 Chicago Marathon and 2023 Boston Marathon. Cal currently is campaigning for races across the country to prioritize trans and nonbinary visibility and recognition in sports.

Recently Out of the Dark: Cal Calamia is a short documentary that delves into Cal's journey, from their upbringing in a conservative suburb to his decision to come out as transmasculine and begin hormone therapy was accepted into Tribeca Film Festival. It explores Cal's profound struggles with mental health, and how they ultimately found the support necessary to survive and eventually go on to dominate the non-binary category in major marathons, as well as become an advocate for gender inclusivity in racing and transgender rights.

The first non-binary winner of both the Bay to Breakers and the San Francisco Marathon, Cal won the 2023 New York City Marathon in the non-binary division and was a top finisher at other major races, all the while boosting the visibility of trans and non-binary athletes.
