[0:04] Robert Bannon: Are you ready?

[0:05] Robert Bannon: It's The Roundtable with me, Robert Bannon.

[0:08] Robert Bannon: Well, welcome to The Roundtable, everybody.

[0:10] Robert Bannon: My name is Robert Bannon. You're listening to us on iHeart, Spotify, Broadway World, the Broadway Podcast Network.

[0:14] Robert Bannon: If you're somebody who's a little bit of a hip hop head, like I am, and you're of a certain age, and you remember my neck, my... you know it.

[0:21] Robert Bannon: I had the CD. Don't judge me, group. Don't judge my age.

[0:26] Robert Bannon: And if you're here in Detroit like I am, then you know my Detroit brethren sister over here.

[0:33] Robert Bannon: Listen, I live on Seven Mile and Libernoy. I'm in the city, city.

[0:37] Robert Bannon: Yes, my side. Royal Oak or over Inferno. I'm in the city.

[0:42] Robert Bannon: And these ladies are my new people. They are on my Spotify playlist, and you need to be listening to their music right now.

[0:47] Robert Bannon: Please welcome everybody. I am so excited that they're here. Flyana Boss are here on The Roundtable. Whoop, boop boop.

[0:54] Flyana Boss: Yes, thank you.

[0:56] Flyana Boss: Thank you for having us. That was a great intro.

[0:58] Robert Bannon: Yeah.

[0:59] Robert Bannon: Well, I'm a fan. I told your people, I said, get them. I need them on my show because I've been listening to their music.

[1:06] Robert Bannon: So, well, I'm gonna start with no offense, but I gotta start with my Detroit, my 313.

[1:11] Flyana Boss: Where?

[1:11] Flyana Boss: No offense taken, I love Detroit.

[1:13] Flyana Boss: Shout out Detroit.

[1:14] Robert Bannon: She loves Detroit.

[1:15] Flyana Boss: She's an honorary Detroitian.

[1:16] Robert Bannon: Look, I moved to Detroit two years ago from New York.

[1:20] Robert Bannon: And now I'm a Detroiter. Don't mess with me at no gas station on the east side. I'll come for you.

[1:25] Flyana Boss: Don't worry.

[1:26] Flyana Boss: So Bobby, where did you grow up here in Detroit?

[1:29] Robert Bannon: Okay, so I grew up first Seven Mile and Schaefer.

[1:32] Flyana Boss: So period, Seven Mile.

[1:34] Robert Bannon: Got it.

[1:35] Robert Bannon: Yes.

[1:35] Robert Bannon: And then I call myself first generation suburban.

[1:39] Robert Bannon: So when I was like eight or nine, we moved to Redford, Redford Township.

[1:43] Flyana Boss: Whoop whoop.

[1:44] Flyana Boss: And then that means she got the hell out of Detroit. I understand.

[1:46] Robert Bannon: So we moved to Redford when they had like dirt roads and stuff, and we were like the first black family, like on our street.

[1:54] Flyana Boss: That's incredible.

[1:55] Flyana Boss: That's a big deal.

[1:56] Flyana Boss: And Dallas, Texas, in the house here as well.

[2:00] Flyana Boss: Hello to one four.

[2:02] Robert Bannon: So you grew up in totally different environments in Detroit, but an urban environment, a city at that, and then you discovered music as well.

[2:09] Flyana Boss: Yes.

[2:10] Flyana Boss: Sorry, me.

[2:11] Robert Bannon: No, yes, you.

[2:11] Flyana Boss: Yes.

[2:12] Flyana Boss: Nope.

[2:13] Flyana Boss: Dallas.

[2:14] Flyana Boss: Dallas.

[2:14] Flyana Boss: Yes.

[2:15] Flyana Boss: Um, kind of the same.

[2:17] Flyana Boss: Like we were in like Dallas proper for a while in Oak Cliff, and then I'm also a first generation suburban.

[2:24] Flyana Boss: So my whole family moved to the suburbs, Allen, Texas.

[2:27] Flyana Boss: And then we ended up moving back to the city for my senior year.

[2:31] Flyana Boss: Can will you tell me before I get too nervous to call you by your name? Can you say it properly so I don't embarrass myself and make a course?

[2:37] Flyana Boss: Thank you for asking.

[2:38] Flyana Boss: It's Falion, like you're flying.

[2:40] Robert Bannon: Falion.

[2:41] Robert Bannon: All right, so Falion, you decide to go to school, is what I understand.

[2:45] Robert Bannon: You go to college, and then you meet this one, and then the hijinks crazy just begins.

[2:50] Robert Bannon: How did it start, Falion?

[2:52] Flyana Boss: First of all, Hollywood Boulevard. That's the start.

[2:54] Flyana Boss: Okay, you can already imagine it's just like crazy.

[2:57] Flyana Boss: We both wanted to be big stars.

[2:59] Flyana Boss: We're like, you know, the only place we need to go is California.

[2:59] Flyana Boss: We need to go to LA. We need to go to Hollywood.

[3:05] Flyana Boss: So we both decided to pick this random ass school on Hollywood Boulevard.

[3:10] Flyana Boss: Um, where we didn't really like learn much of anything, but we did meet each other, and the rest is really history.

[3:17] Flyana Boss: We just like clicked and it took a little while for us to start Flyana Boss after we first met.

[3:22] Flyana Boss: Um, but then history made itself.

[3:26] Robert Bannon: How'd you meet? How did you two meet if you wasn't at school?

[3:29] Flyana Boss: Um, well, it was at school and Falion.

[3:32] Flyana Boss: I think like they called it quarters, so Falion was there like a couple quarters or a quarter before me, but it was like my first day, my first class, and she was there, and she was adorable and cute and so talented.

[3:43] Flyana Boss: Like she was like playing her songs, and I was like, Oh my god, this girl's songs are so good.

[3:48] Flyana Boss: Like I was like an instant fan, and like I hadn't like recorded a song yet at that time.

[3:53] Flyana Boss: So I was just like, Oh my god, how do I get like this girl?

[3:57] Flyana Boss: So that's why it took a while for us to start Flyana Boss because I had to like step my cookies up.

[4:04] Robert Bannon: And then Felion, you put out all this work and everything's going on. You put out the song "You Wish," okay, and then "You Wish" becomes like a song, like it whoosh shoots up the chart, all of a sudden there's a video, all of a sudden you guys are hitting the road, people are talking, there's a remix, there's all this information.

[4:24] Robert Bannon: What did it feel like? Was there a moment where you heard it on the radio or someone was talking about it, or it went viral that you looked at each other and were like, oh damn, this is happening?

[4:33] Flyana Boss: Listen, we were working 40 hours a week, regular, dagular jobs, grinding, posting, recording, all of the things, and yeah, like you said, like "You Wish" happened, and it definitely changed our lives.

[4:47] Flyana Boss: Um, we just remember like the first video that came out. We were like, oh my god, it's not stopping.

[4:52] Flyana Boss: Like the views were going crazy.

[4:54] Flyana Boss: It was like a million, and then okay, two million, and three million, like all of those videos have over 10 million views.

[5:00] Flyana Boss: Um, and then like a pivotal point was also having Missy Elliott on the... that was amazing.

[5:07] Robert Bannon: Excuse me, do you understand Bobby? What in the hell happened?

[5:11] Flyana Boss: That was crazy.

[5:14] Flyana Boss: That's still insane to think about to this day.

[5:17] Flyana Boss: Like anytime, like, because obviously I save all of our songs to my music library.

[5:21] Flyana Boss: So if it like comes on my playlist, like while I'm driving, and I'm just like, Wow, oh my God.

[5:27] Flyana Boss: Like Missy Elliott's on a song with us, it's still insane.

[5:30] Robert Bannon: But you know why it happened? Because y'all are fire. You guys spit fire, your beats are fire.

[5:35] Robert Bannon: You need that. This little white dude that grew up in New Jersey is telling you all that you need to listen to them right now.

[5:35] Robert Bannon: To listen to them right now, no matter who you are, where you are.

[5:46] Flyana Boss: So behind the scenes, uh the climb you talk about work.

[5:50] Robert Bannon: So Flyana, Flyana, I'm gonna get it.

[5:55] Flyana Boss: Behind the scenes, you talk about work. What is your writing style?

[6:00] Flyana Boss: What was the work that you guys put in behind the scenes that we just see a video or hear a song?

[6:03] Flyana Boss: We don't know the grind that really takes place.

[6:05] Flyana Boss: Yeah, so it was like every day in the studio, just out of the love of it, we're just creating with each other.

[6:12] Flyana Boss: And then, you know, some days we'd have shoots, um, we'd edit the videos, everything.

[6:17] Flyana Boss: Just all encompassing.

[6:19] Flyana Boss: But basically, like we would get in the studio, someone would have an idea, we'd play with that idea, maybe we'd move on, maybe we'd stay on just one idea the whole time.

[6:28] Flyana Boss: But it was truly like it's a job in itself, too.

[6:32] Flyana Boss: So every day we just like came to the studio, what are we gonna do today? Boom, we did it, and then that's it, pretty much.

[6:38] Robert Bannon: I love it.

[6:39] Robert Bannon: So we talk about the new song, we talk about "Jungle," and we talk about... I alluded to knowing the sample back in 2000.

[6:47] Robert Bannon: Okay, don't age myself.

[6:48] Robert Bannon: So, Bobby, for you, this how did you think of this song? It's iconic.

[6:53] Robert Bannon: Okay, we remember it. You play a lot of homage to the people who have done it before you.

[6:58] Robert Bannon: Your name is an homage to Miss Ross herself.

[7:01] Robert Bannon: So you talk about people who have come before you.

[7:03] Robert Bannon: How'd you think of it? And what was the process to write this?

[7:07] Flyana Boss: Um, so we were in the studio with Oakfelder and our producer Marky Style, and we always try to think about flipping like classic songs.

[7:14] Flyana Boss: So it was actually Mark's idea to flip "My Neck, My Back."

[7:18] Flyana Boss: And it's just like a classic, like female anthem.

[7:21] Flyana Boss: So, like, why not get nasty, get freaky with it?

[7:25] Flyana Boss: You know, people like view us as like these cute, like cutie patootie girls, which we are, but like, you know, we're grown.

[7:31] Flyana Boss: So that's what we wanted to show.

[7:33] Robert Bannon: But you're grown, you could do whatever you want with... she got a baby.

[7:37] Flyana Boss: The baby got here somehow.

[7:38] Flyana Boss: Lyon, you have a baby.

[7:40] Flyana Boss: Mm-hmm.

[7:41] Flyana Boss: Come on, see.

[7:43] Flyana Boss: That is a whole different type of neck and back.

[7:45] Flyana Boss: It wasn't immaculate, yeah.

[7:47] Flyana Boss: It wasn't immaculate conception.

[7:54] Robert Bannon: So when you... when good night, okay.

[7:58] Robert Bannon: Were you nervous? Have you heard back?

[8:00] Flyana Boss: Have you heard back? Any... have you heard yet about from people?

[8:04] Flyana Boss: Did she... did she reach out to you yet?

[8:06] Flyana Boss: Has she heard the song?

[8:07] Flyana Boss: Kaya hasn't reached out yet.

[8:09] Flyana Boss: We love Kaya, she's an icon, just a queen, everything about it.

[8:12] Flyana Boss: Just she does these little like judge videos where she's like judging bitches.

[8:12] Robert Bannon: Can I cuss?

[8:12] Flyana Boss: Yes.

[8:12] Flyana Boss: Where she's like judging bitches, and like hopefully we'll get judged one day.

[8:22] Flyana Boss: We'll have the she's gonna judge, you're gonna get tense across the board.

[8:25] Flyana Boss: We would love any feedback, whether it's positive or negative.

[8:28] Flyana Boss: Like, if Kaya just like acknowledges our existence at all, it'll be great.

[8:33] Flyana Boss: We're gonna all at her, at her right now.

[8:35] Flyana Boss: And so tell me, Bobby, what is what is feeling it?

[8:38] Flyana Boss: What what is what do we got coming up?

[8:39] Flyana Boss: What is the what is on the horizon?

[8:41] Flyana Boss: Because I know you feeling it is like a super exciting song that we're like uh ready to drop.

[8:46] Flyana Boss: Like, it's like us delving into like our edium experimental vibe because we have so many sides of us and so many different facets, and we like collaborated with this really dope artist, Moore Kismet, and they produced it with marquee and it's like it's just a vibe I don't know even fully how to explain and we wrote it really quickly together like there's so many different flows it's so much to get into and I feel like people just have to listen to it and feel it.

[9:13] Flyana Boss: May 8th if you but you better click the little if wherever you listen to music where you make someone your artist and you add to them and you want to know when their new music drops you need to put them on it and then you make to make sure that on May 8th you're ready for this incredible moment.

[9:26] Flyana Boss: This feels like this is this is this is not this is main character we're here to be we are the headline act we're ready to come for you how has that I know you've you've worked with you've toured with Kesha and Janelle Monet and the black eyepiece flying what is it like for you now to be ready to release these singles and this is your time you couldn't work it's been a long time coming like we've been like asking the universe for a project and like to really like make an era and like do the thing and now is finally our time to like do the thing so we're bringing the party to the people we're both like kind of introverted but we love to go out and dance.

[10:04] Flyana Boss: So that's kind of the vibe of like we want all of the introverted baddies to get out of the house get on the dance floor shake some ass and listen to our music am I an introverted baddie yes I am you might be I might be you might be look I'm old and married now I need to take my husband to the club take your husband to the club exactly we deserve to have a good time too that's the vibe I get my lingo there I mean, I could still get a little drop to it.

[10:33] Robert Bannon: Yes.

[10:34] Robert Bannon: I'm in my 40s though, Bob Bobby.

[10:36] Flyana Boss: I'm flying.

[10:37] Flyana Boss: Take your husband and your 40-year old ass to the club.

[10:40] Robert Bannon: Exactly.

[10:40] Robert Bannon: That and I'm gonna listen to your music.

[10:43] Flyana Boss: Exactly.

[10:44] Flyana Boss: And then if my neck and my back hurt the next day, don't ask no grown ass questions about my life.

[10:48] Flyana Boss: It's none of your damn business.

[10:50] Flyana Boss: Put on jungle and work out your neck and go back.

[10:53] Flyana Boss: You know, you did the right.

[10:55] Robert Bannon: Can I say I appreciate it?

[10:56] Robert Bannon: Because I said the original, I say all the bad words, but you all made it classier, more radio friendly for the people.

[11:05] Robert Bannon: And you have young people in the they don't say all the the other words in there.

[11:08] Flyana Boss: So you could play this song in front of people.

[11:12] Flyana Boss: Yeah, it's the only words that my mom used to let me say when I was younger with the song.

[11:17] Robert Bannon: So right.

[11:18] Robert Bannon: You you the other parts are left up for your imagination.

[11:22] Flyana Boss: Yeah.

[11:23] Flyana Boss: So I love this interview.

[11:26] Flyana Boss: That's why I was excited about it.

[11:27] Flyana Boss: I can tell I love these people, right?

[11:30] Robert Bannon: So you went from a viral moment to a big giant hit to a song that flew up the charts.

[11:34] Robert Bannon: So Falion, what is it that went from I'm a Instagram, TikTok song, people are sampling it to now I'm I'm a staying power.

[11:42] Robert Bannon: Like I put out more singles, more music is coming out, EPs, albums, tours, etc.

[11:48] Robert Bannon: Was that intentional?

[11:53] Flyana Boss: Yeah, absolutely.

[11:54] Flyana Boss: That was always our our point of entry.

[11:57] Flyana Boss: Like we wanted to be established as real musicians because that's what we were.

[12:01] Flyana Boss: But obviously, during the pandemic, like we couldn't perform anymore, like there was nothing else to do but to like dive into posting.

[12:08] Flyana Boss: So we like really took that and we're like, we're gonna go viral.

[12:11] Flyana Boss: And that's how we're like, and we're gonna do the thing, we're gonna go on tour.

[12:15] Flyana Boss: So after we went on tour with Janelle, we were like, okay, period.

[12:18] Flyana Boss: Now we're gonna go on our own tour.

[12:20] Flyana Boss: We went on our own tour, headline.

[12:22] Flyana Boss: We did like you said, we did Kesha, we did black eyed Peace.

[12:25] Flyana Boss: We've done like college tours, yeah, all, and we're solidifying ourselves as artists, period.

[12:31] Flyana Boss: Point blank.

[12:32] Flyana Boss: Um, and we're making a living off of sharing our art and shaking our ass.

[12:36] Flyana Boss: Like I really couldn't even ask for anything better.

[12:39] Robert Bannon: Yes, sharing art and shaking ass.

[12:42] Robert Bannon: Yes, you know, when I was young, that was my dream, but it didn't all come true.

[12:46] Robert Bannon: But it's but you we could still shake it and we could still share it.

[12:50] Flyana Boss: Yes, shake it and we could still so Bobby.

[12:53] Flyana Boss: Are we gonna see more live shows?

[12:54] Flyana Boss: Are we gonna see some more fun stuff in the future?

[12:57] Flyana Boss: We have more music.

[12:58] Flyana Boss: You guys are always working.

[12:59] Flyana Boss: Yes, absolutely.

[13:01] Flyana Boss: More shows, more music, more sharing art and shaking ass.

[13:04] Robert Bannon: Yeah.

[13:05] Robert Bannon: Well, when you come to Detroit, I want to share art and shake ass with you all.

[13:09] Flyana Boss: We're we love Detroit.

[13:10] Flyana Boss: Yes, and Detroit loves us.

[13:13] Flyana Boss: We were just there.

[13:14] Robert Bannon: Where were you?

[13:15] Flyana Boss: Where were you?

[13:15] Flyana Boss: Where was where were you?

[13:17] Flyana Boss: Why didn't we?

[13:17] Flyana Boss: We performed at Big Pink.

[13:18] Flyana Boss: Like we did a DJ set at the big pink, and we got shit down.

[13:22] Robert Bannon: Like, what is this DJ?

[13:23] Flyana Boss: You all DJ for real?

[13:25] Flyana Boss: We turned the party up.

[13:27] Robert Bannon: What is the party?

[13:27] Flyana Boss: Well, I am what is your DJ set like?

[13:29] Flyana Boss: What do you do?

[13:31] Flyana Boss: Okay, just like real main character energy, like you said earlier with the 2000s with the 99 and the 2000.

[13:37] Flyana Boss: Like you're gonna play 99, 2000.

[13:40] Flyana Boss: Yes, club bangers, like RB Him.

[13:42] Flyana Boss: We don't want to be around nobody not shaking ass.

[13:45] Flyana Boss: So we're playing the songs to shake your ass too.

[13:47] Flyana Boss: Yeah, we're the party.

[13:49] Robert Bannon: I need to.

[13:50] Robert Bannon: That's my time.

[13:51] Flyana Boss: Yes, you should have been there next time.

[13:54] Flyana Boss: Mm-hmm.

[13:55] Flyana Boss: We'll be back.

[13:56] Flyana Boss: You and your kids look, we're all gonna be following them on social media.

[13:56] Flyana Boss: We're all gonna be staying up to date when they're playing and DJing said you're not too old, you're not too anything.

[14:04] Flyana Boss: Everybody comes, everybody, no matter what gender, race, ethnicity, whatever, sexuality.

[14:10] Flyana Boss: You're gonna come, they're gonna play the music you know, you're gonna shake ass, like they said.

[14:15] Robert Bannon: I'm gonna try to say my jersey shake ass in my jersey accent.

[14:18] Flyana Boss: Yes, I like if I'm in Detroit.

[14:21] Flyana Boss: I'm gonna say you finna go to the club.

[14:23] Robert Bannon: I learned that word.

[14:23] Flyana Boss: Finna is my new word from Detroit thing.

[14:27] Flyana Boss: You yeah, they say you finna go to the grocery store.

[14:30] Robert Bannon: I know Finna, but I thought that was just a black thing, but is that Detroit?

[14:34] Flyana Boss: I don't never heard it before.

[14:35] Flyana Boss: And I don't like I own I don't really like white people.

[14:38] Flyana Boss: I only have we stayed in Dallas.

[14:43] Robert Bannon: You say finna always say about to or like about to more about you than finna.

[14:48] Flyana Boss: Yeah, I think more about too, yeah.

[14:50] Robert Bannon: Okay, yeah.

[14:51] Robert Bannon: Well, okay, finna's Detroit then.

[15:14] Flyana Boss: It's a Detroit thing to me.

[15:15] Flyana Boss: So you finna go get jungle and listen to jungle right now.

[15:19] Flyana Boss: I'm finna listen to jungle.

[15:20] Flyana Boss: We should have said I'm finna sin again because it sounds yes.

[15:24] Flyana Boss: Oh, that's about to end.

[15:25] Flyana Boss: Yes, we're gonna have a group, a good old party on your way home from work today.

[15:30] Flyana Boss: Listen to these ladies, and then get ready for when they're in your neck of the woods.

[15:33] Flyana Boss: Brand new music being released in May.

[15:35] Flyana Boss: Get ready for that as well.

[15:36] Robert Bannon: My show is your show.

[15:37] Robert Bannon: I hope to see you out in these streets, and I'll be shaking it for y'all.

[15:40] Flyana Boss: And I hope you come back any my any.

[15:42] Flyana Boss: You gotta blow up and forget about me, and that's what you're saying.

[15:45] Flyana Boss: No, never forget about you.

[15:46] Flyana Boss: Robert.

[15:47] Flyana Boss: Next big thing, Bobby.

[15:49] Flyana Boss: We're we're not gonna forget about you.

[15:51] Flyana Boss: Robert Finna's supposed to happen.

[15:52] Flyana Boss: Robert Finnegan.

[15:54] Flyana Boss: Robert Finnegan.

[15:55] Flyana Boss: You finna forget me.

[15:56] Flyana Boss: It's over stars.

[16:00] Flyana Boss: Wait till you hear them.

[16:00] Flyana Boss: You'll they're stars.
