As a leading producer of New York, London and global theater for 25 years, Hal Luftig has collaborated with some of its most brilliant creative artists. His productions have received 45 Tony Awards on Broadway. He has been honored personally with four Tony’s, and two Olivier Awards in London. His shows include new musicals, renowned plays, and beloved revivals: Death and the Maiden starring Glenn Close, Gene Hackman and Richard Dreyfus; Jelly’s Last Jam starring Gregory Hines; Tony Kushner’s Angels in America; Moon Over Buffalo, starring Carol Burnett; Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I; Natalie Portman in The Diary of Anne Frank; Annie Get Your Gun; Thoroughly Modern Millie; Twyla Tharp and Billy Joel’s Movin’ Out; Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart at the Public Theater; Whoopi Goldberg’s Whoopi; Legally Blonde, the Musical; Arthur Miller’s All My Sons starring John Lithgow, Diane Weist and Katie Holmes; Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim’s West Side Story; Evita starring Ricky Martin; David Byrne and Fatboy Slim’s Here Lies Love; The Elephant Man starring Bradley Cooper; Children of a Lesser God; and Kinky Boots. Since opening in New York in 2013, Kinky Boots has gone on to delight and move audiences across North America, in London, Europe, and Asia. It has garnered every major musical theater award along the way, including the Best Musical Tony Award (New York), the Best Musical Olivier Award (London), the Best Musical Grammy Award (U.S.), the Best Musical Dora Award (Toronto), the Korea Musical Theater Association Award, and many others. In New York, he is producing David Byrne’s American Utopia, and a revival of Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite, which opens Spring of 2020. Off Broadway: Scotland, PA (Roundabout); and Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish, which will tour North America and Australia in 2020. He is also developing Becoming Nancy and My Very Own British Invasion, both new musicals directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell. Also in development is a reimagining of The Who’s Tommy, which will run at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre in 2021, and Here Lies Love for Broadway. Hal is the host of new podcast Broadway Biz, coming soon to the Broadway Podcast Network. Hal has an MFA from Columbia University in New York, a Doctorate of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) from the State University of New York, and an ulcer from tension.
