About

Howard Ashman was an acclaimed American playwright, lyricist, and director, best known for his work in musical theater and film. Born on May 17, 1950, Ashman collaborated with composer Alan Menken to create some of the most beloved musical scores of all time. Their partnership brought to life the Off-Broadway hit Little Shop of Horrors, which was later adapted into a successful film and a Broadway production.

Ashman's significant contributions to Disney's animation renaissance include writing the lyrics for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. His work on The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast earned him two Academy Awards for Best Original Song, for "Under the Sea" and "Beauty and the Beast," respectively. Tragically, Ashman's life was cut short when he passed away from complications due to AIDS on March 14, 1991, but his legacy endures through his timeless contributions to the world of musical theater and film.
