[0:00] Andrew: Hello!
[0:01] Kevin McHale: Oh my god, here we are!
[0:04] Jenna Ushkowitz: Again! We're back!
[0:05] Kevin McHale: Here we are again!
[0:06] Andrew: Can I just say something?
[0:08] Jenna Ushkowitz: Yes.
[0:09] Andrew: I know we're recording this, you know, it's off from like what's happening currently today in real life, but behind you is a beautiful portrait of a white horse and Beyoncé just became the most nominated person ever in Grammy history.
[0:26] Jenna Ushkowitz: I just got the commission today to celebrate, yeah.
[0:28] Andrew: It's really doing it for me, so thank you.
[0:31] Jenna Ushkowitz: Oh, thank you. It's beautiful. I take it for granted, so thank you.
[0:35] Kevin McHale: You know, the Grammys take Beyoncé for granted, so it's...
[0:39] Andrew: Exactly. Say it!
[0:41] Jenna Ushkowitz: Yes.
[0:41] Andrew: We've got a mission to find the best song that's ever been on Glee.
[0:51] Jenna Ushkowitz: There's no rhyme or reason to it, so don't get mad at me.
[0:59] Andrew: Oh my gosh, our Gleeks this week, literally, they don't need any introduction. Joined by Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz. Hello!
[1:27] Kevin McHale: Hello!
[1:29] Jenna Ushkowitz: Thrilled to be back.
[1:31] Andrew: A platform for y'all to talk about Glee. I mean, finally.
[1:36] Kevin McHale: I've been needing a space and thank you for creating it for us.
[1:38] Andrew: Of course, of course. Kevin, we need to discuss the absolute sickness that you performed on stage.
[1:47] Jenna Ushkowitz: It made me ill. Like the level...
[1:50] Kevin McHale: I have that effect on people.
[1:53] Jenna Ushkowitz: It was so crazy. Like Alexa was like, let's stage door and I was like, I don't want to see that man right now. I have no words for him. It was so good.
[2:02] Kevin McHale: I'm so jealous.
[2:05] Kevin McHale: Well, thank you very, very much. And thank you for coming. It was so nice to see you in real life.
[2:12] Jenna Ushkowitz: You were tall.
[2:14] Kevin McHale: Yes, 6'2".
[2:16] Jenna Ushkowitz: See, were you getting 6'2" from this?
[2:18] Kevin McHale: No, I didn't. I didn't even think about it.
[2:20] Jenna Ushkowitz: This is a standing desk. Should I stand up?
[2:23] Kevin McHale: Oh, I love it. I love it.
[2:25] Jenna Ushkowitz: I was flabbergasted, but thank you. It was very sweet of you both to come.
[2:30] Kevin McHale: Always so supportive. And it was nice. You know, we got to chat a little bit. It feels like every time that I see any of y'all live on stage, it feels like so validating that I leave the production and I'm like, I chose the right fandom.
[2:48] Jenna Ushkowitz: You guys are just like insanely like it just no words. So good.
[2:55] Kevin McHale: That is very sweet. Thank you very much.
[2:56] Jenna Ushkowitz: Get this kid on Broadway.
[2:58] Kevin McHale: Exactly. Speaking of Jenna, my question is for you. What production would you like to see Kevin in on Broadway?
[3:06] Jenna Ushkowitz: Okay, so I would love to see him in something original, but if I had to pick something current or around while I would have loved to see him in Spelling Bee, I always thought that a good entry.
[3:22] Kevin McHale: Please send it.
[3:23] Jenna Ushkowitz: Do you actually? I caught it from a sword.
[3:26] Kevin McHale: I should not be saying this publicly, but I can send it to you, Kevin.
[3:30] Jenna Ushkowitz: It's really good.
[3:31] Kevin McHale: You have to.
[3:31] Jenna Ushkowitz: I always thought a good entry way for Kevin, not that he needs it now, would be Bach in Wicked.
[3:38] Kevin McHale: Oh, I always thought it was such a good one for him.
[3:43] Jenna Ushkowitz: Um, this is a good question. I don't I haven't thought about this too, too deeply.
[3:50] Kevin McHale: Um, that's a good start.
[3:54] Jenna Ushkowitz: I would love to see him in Evan Hansen.
[3:57] Kevin McHale: Jenna, she does not have the range.
[4:01] Jenna Ushkowitz: No, we saw the range.
[4:03] Kevin McHale: No, look, I would like I appreciate over the years. People have said that I appreciate it.
[4:09] Kevin McHale: I actually can't sing it like I physically cannot do it after also doing a show with Noah Galvin.
[4:18] Jenna Ushkowitz: Oh, that is somebody's voice who naturally lives up there.
[4:23] Kevin McHale: Now you understand, though, like some people, it's just natural.
[4:27] Jenna Ushkowitz: It just his voice is up there. My I can for those of you who are interested, the two of you, I can visit, right? Like I can do a single note, maybe.
[4:38] Kevin McHale: Okay, Evan Hansen, you have to I get it.
[4:41] Jenna Ushkowitz: You have to live up there. I get it. And sure, my voice is deeper. I mean, the friend who's the Sincerely Me role. I think that that's very fun.
[4:49] Kevin McHale: Oh, yes, that would have been great, too.
[4:52] Jenna Ushkowitz: We talked about Little Shop, Jenna.
[4:54] Kevin McHale: We did talk about Little Shop. I also would have loved to have seen Kevin as Ogie in Waitress.
[4:59] Jenna Ushkowitz: Oh, fun.
[5:00] Kevin McHale: I thought that'd be a great one for him.
[5:02] Jenna Ushkowitz: That number is just killer showstopper.
[5:05] Kevin McHale: Showstopper.
[5:07] Jenna Ushkowitz: Yes.
[5:08] Kevin McHale: So those are just a few. I'll come back. I think we should do Spelling Bee together, Jenna.
[5:12] Jenna Ushkowitz: Oh, I would die. I would die to do that show.
[5:14] Kevin McHale: Who would you want to be, Jenna?
[5:16] Jenna Ushkowitz: You know, it's funny because I always wanted to play Marcy Parks, of course, growing up like Debra Craig. She was it for me in that show.
[5:25] Kevin McHale: But there's always a part of me that wanted to play Olive.
[5:28] Jenna Ushkowitz: Yeah, I was thinking at Olive. I was thinking like Marcy feels like the obvious role. However, Olive, I think, has you written all over it.
[5:38] Kevin McHale: I think it's so up your alley.
[5:40] Jenna Ushkowitz: Yeah, I would love to play Olive. That's actually the one that I think would confuse or not confuse people, but it would surprise people if you're in a production. They're like, oh, obviously she's playing the Asian girl. You know what I mean?
[5:50] Kevin McHale: So.
[5:51] Jenna Ushkowitz: But the I Love You song. We need to hear it. We need it.
[5:56] Andrew: All right. Oh, God, I need to hear that. Let's just cut everything else. Let's just workshop the I Love You song.
[6:05] Kevin McHale: That's very nice. You and I will be mom and dad.
[6:09] Jenna Ushkowitz: Oh, speaking of not having the range.
[6:13] Andrew: Okay, we're glacketing today. Just to wet your palate a little bit. There's been a little bit of some contested competitions since your last appearance. Would like to just check base on where you fall on these competitions.
[6:27] Kevin McHale: Great.
[6:28] Andrew: First one being Born This Way versus We Are Young.
[6:34] Jenna Ushkowitz: Oh, my God. That's a hard one. Wow.
[6:38] Andrew: Speed round. Come on. What's the first? You know it.
[6:41] Jenna Ushkowitz: Born This Way.
[6:42] Kevin McHale: Born This Way.
[6:45] Andrew: Oh, God.
[6:47] Kevin McHale: I'm going We Are Young.
[6:48] Andrew: Okay. All right. Great. We're already fighting. I love it.
[6:52] Andrew: Just The Way You Are, Finn's version versus Being Alive by Kurt.
[6:56] Jenna Ushkowitz: Oh, these are murderous.
[7:00] Kevin McHale: This is well, we need to glack it.
[7:02] Jenna Ushkowitz: Oh.
[7:05] Kevin McHale: I'm going to go just The Way You Are.
[7:07] Jenna Ushkowitz: I am too. I agree.
[7:09] Kevin McHale: Being Alive went through, however.
[7:13] Andrew: And then the final one I have for you. This was a big one. Mine versus To Start With Love.
[7:19] Jenna Ushkowitz: Oh, mine.
[7:21] Kevin McHale: Okay.
[7:21] Jenna Ushkowitz: No question.
[7:23] Andrew: Easy. All right. Perfect. All right. With that, let's get into it with song number one of competition.
[7:31] Jenna Ushkowitz: Can I just say I don't feel great about my Born This Way answer? I'm still thinking about it.
[7:34] Kevin McHale: So take that as you will.
[7:38] Andrew: It was recorded. We will use it against you forever. Stamped in history.
[7:42] Andrew: Okay. Song number one. You already know what it is. Here we go.
[8:05] ♪ Musical number: "Jump" — performed by Van Halen ♪
[10:01] Jenna Ushkowitz: It's so dumb. You know she did that live on tour.
[10:05] Kevin McHale: She does like a riff in like the full mp3 version that's not even included in the television edit.
[10:09] Jenna Ushkowitz: It's so dumb. It's funny when you go listen to the full versions, like full edits a lot, I forget to do that and you hear these wonderful surprises that you're like where did that come from?
[10:19] Kevin McHale: She and I just talked about this last week.
[10:21] Jenna Ushkowitz: Jump? Yes.
[10:23] Kevin McHale: Because it was still early on and we were like figuring out with Adam Anders and all of them like where our voices fit and she does have like a stupidly naturally high voice and she was saying how her voice isn't as high as it used to be and we started talking about jump and she was like I couldn't do that anymore. I was like I know that's a lie. You absolutely could.
[10:39] Jenna Ushkowitz: It's so fun. Obviously this is very early season one. I'm curious because like I having to talk about Glee myself on a weekly basis in recorded fashion just like you I feel like there are some times where I feel like I need a little bit of a Glee talks. I need like a separation. How do you feel talking about it you know like 15 years after the premiere?
[10:55] Kevin McHale: Heavy question. It feels...
[11:01] Jenna Ushkowitz: Go Kevin.
[11:03] Kevin McHale: I think we're in a good place now. There was a point and like honestly like doing the podcast now and doing it where we get to talk to people like you has been like a breath of fresh air and like hearing other perspectives like what it meant to people who watch it and who watched it then that for some reason has like been a really helpful thing because at some days I'm like I just never want to speak about this show ever again.
[11:29] Jenna Ushkowitz: Yes. And not because I don't like it just because you know when you're like you your podcasts are so well thought out you spend so much time on doing them that like anything you spend that much time doing regardless of how much you love it like I press pause.
[11:45] Kevin McHale: But it has been each other like in a good in a good place currently.
[11:51] Jenna Ushkowitz: Yes. With doing this. I felt like right after the show wrapped I actually moved out of LA because I needed the Glee Talks. I called it that. I was like I need Glee Talks. I need to go home. I need to not think about the show ever again. And then somewhere around the pandemic I think maybe 2019 when the show started resurfacing obviously when Naya passed away like it re it brought us back together in a different way and then bringing the podcast back to life in this with this version. I think I feel better about it and it's in our control now. So I feel like we have more control about how we talk about it how we tell their truth in our narrative versus being talked about. How has it been different of like what you thought it was going to be like re-watching this entire series as opposed to like what it actually is sitting down to watch it and talk about it week to week.
[12:52] Kevin McHale: Yeah, I'm actually pleasantly surprised in how much I enjoy watching each single episode from the memories and then also watching it from more of a viewer standpoint now. Having removed myself and my emotions and my ego from it, you know, this time around, it feels different. There are some episodes and I'm like, God, help me just get through this one. It's not the majority. I really do enjoy everybody's performances so much more and the storyline and what the writers had to accomplish with all these characters and creating through line and not creating continuity. You know, there's just all these things that you really appreciate in a different way. And so I am pleasantly surprised and I did not think I would enjoy watching the show this much again.
[13:47] Jenna Ushkowitz: Oh, that's so good. I'm so happy to hear that. I thought it was going to feel more like a chore.
[13:55] Kevin McHale: Yeah. Than it does. It's actually been really nice. Of course, you know, you have some days where you're like, we've got a couple of episodes coming up that we're like, oh, yeah, but it's been it has been very, very nice.
[14:06] Jenna Ushkowitz: Yeah. And it's been nice to sort of every we didn't mean to do this. But between every season, you know, we do a lot of these like Q&A's or talk to different people. And we're getting sort of like a preface for the season to come, which has been nice. And I think that's been a really great gauge for us.
[14:31] Kevin McHale: Yes. And to prepare ourselves so that the people don't lie. Sometimes you do need some warning.
[14:35] Jenna Ushkowitz: Yeah, to get into. Yeah. You need to adjust those expectations.
[14:40] Kevin McHale: Exactly. I understand that you guys have to get out at the end of the hour. So forgive me if it feels a little rushed. We're gonna get into song number two.

[16:56] Jenna Ushkowitz: The New York episode. Um, obviously you can like see them in the background, the fans, the hordes of fans watching. My question related to the fandom is do you feel more connected with the fans now as opposed to what was your relationship like with the fans as the production was continuing on?
[17:30] Kevin McHale: Yeah, it's very different. Yeah, when you're in it, and also the way you can communicate like now we have space and distance from it, where like everyone's a little calmer.
[17:42] Jenna Ushkowitz: Yeah, and you can have these conversations and actually take the time and find out what the show meant to people.
[17:46] Kevin McHale: Yes, then it was very much like, you know, it was like, it was like we were just working all the time. And then anywhere we went, it was it was like crowds of people. And so it was a very different dynamic. I think also with social media, it was different. We were just in the era of Twitter and Instagram and they're like, inception. And so we weren't able to connect with them in a way that we are now.
[18:20] Jenna Ushkowitz: I agree with Kevin, though, having some time removed from it, because it really was pandemonium. And you really, we really did have to protect ourselves. And when I say that, I don't mean in like a sense of violence or, you know, not safety, but protect yourself. You can't give everything you have. And if we gave to one person, we would feel like we were not giving the same to everybody else. And for me, it felt like I felt like I was robbing people then it was unfair in some way. And we really did try to take time with fans, especially like when they come and they hang out outside of your hotel and things like that. Obviously, safety is a thing. But, you know, you're like you they're there for three days.
You're like, what are you doing here? And like, where are you from? And where are you sleeping? And what's going on? And we really were so appreciative of everybody. But it was just a different beast in being able to connect with them in a fair way that felt safe and not completely chaotic.
[19:26] Kevin McHale: Like and now it's just so it's so different.

But yeah, at first, like it was very triggering for me to hear that like during the show. Because you're like, kind of feel validated, but you also kind of feel like, wow, people see it too. It's like your worst fear being like validated that you're like, wow, I'm not I'm not good enough for them to use me. Now I'm like, it's just it was what it was.

And when they were great, like they were there, they were great. And I'm really happy for her that she got that. Tina has like a really great slew of episodes coming up where it's like, it almost felt like a departure for you, like on your way out that it was like, hey, here's a bunch of stuff for you to chew on.
[20:45] Kevin McHale: Yeah, yeah. She's also like one of the veterans at that point. So it just it made sense to me. But yes, that that's kind of the thing I get.
[20:52] Jenna Ushkowitz: But when it comes down to it feels like we're talking all over the place. But what comes down to this competition at hand of jump versus the New York mashup? Is there an obvious choice for either of y'all?

[21:19] Kevin McHale: It's so interesting. I the few weeks ago, I had someone on that was under the impression that the New York mashup was an original song that like that, because it was like in an episode where you were doing original music. It makes sense. And some of the lyrics in that song are so dumb. The Madonna song is diabolical.

It feels wrong to like compare tributes. But I feel like this one feels like so much more like beautiful and earn like then the quarterback that it's like a celebration of yes, of Finn and Corey. I just love this.
[25:17] Jenna Ushkowitz: Yeah. And I just I was curious because Corey's loss was so felt around the globe by so many fans. I remember that was like the biggest loss that really impacted me up until that point in my life that I was 17. But I'm curious for both of you. Does that ever feel weird to share that amount of grief with fans around the globe that just didn't know him?
[25:44] Jenna Ushkowitz: You would ask me this a few years ago, well, many, many years ago, starting with Corey. I might have said it did feel weird. And I think it's because, in hindsight, when we were, these fans were grieving, they were so incredibly distraught and emotional about it. And we, too, were also still in the very fresh phases of grieving. And it's like when somebody just throws the salt, like a big vat of salt in your wound, it makes it that much worse. And then anger and all these things come up, all these emotions come up. So I think for me, it was harder when I was still, the grieving was fresh. Grief gets smaller, gets easier, gets different, becomes something different. But I think back then, it felt like, you know, there's a sense of like, people felt like they really did connect with Finn and they knew Corey in a lot of ways.
And then you have the personal side of like, knowing Corey and working with him every day and looking him in the eye and calling him a friend. And so there were, everybody has their own thing. But I think it was just so much harder back then. And we learned from that. And so along the way, unfortunately, as we've lost more people, you understand to disconnect though, too. That everybody gets to grieve and everybody has it in their own way. And they're not trying to take something away from you. But that it's just what it is, them going through their process as well. But yeah, it's just weird in general. It's not normal to be grieving in public with millions and millions of people. So, you know what I mean?
It's just something new to navigate. Now it's, you understand, I mean, obviously, we just had the Corey memory, you know, tribute episode. And, you know, you also graciously submitted a voice note. And there's just, it's so beautiful that all those fans and all those people were so deeply touched by one person. You see the impact. And that to me is so beautiful now that I can look at it like that. You know what I mean? And I think it's so beautiful that you're even being as vulnerable as you are to go back into this space, as like murky as it might have seemed to go back and rewatch all of these episodes, considering all that. And it is the greatest gift having talked to countless fans of this series of like, how much this show means that it's like you are providing something so, so special.
That is like, we don't deserve that, frankly, like we don't like this is not something that we expect from you. This is such a gift. What you two are giving and so I just wanted to personally thank you.

They didn't know where she was in the world. Like they couldn't get a hold of her.

[32:41] Kevin McHale: Oh, no, it was Leaky Lee. Sorry. There was a song I was supposed to do by Björk. Oh, really? They couldn't find where she was. And so, therefore, we had to switch to Leaky Lee. That's what it was. And that's Dianna.
[33:02] Jenna Ushkowitz: Oh, my God. That is Björk. You just presented so much content. I did not know about this Björk stuff. That's crazy. I totally forgot about it. Dianna is, Kevin, I don't know, maybe you can explain it better. But my memory is of Dianna. You would just be standing there. There's so many stories. There's so many stories. She'd just be standing in there. And all of a sudden, she'd bust out into a dance move. She'd be like, I just want to dance. And like in rehearsal, you're just like standing there or like between takes. And she was very, I don't know if this is okay. Should I say it? She's very clumsy. And we were on our way to dance rehearsal after one of our shoots of like, I think it was like a sectionals or regionals very early on in the show.
And we're coming down the aisle of the theater to get to the stage to rehearse Tomorrow's Number. It's like the New Directions. I can't remember. Maybe it was Journey. I think it was Journey to Regionals. And she's coming down in her like very flowy patterned dress that she always, you know, she always wore like a nice long patterned dress. And she's coming down the aisles. And all of a sudden, we're on the down incline and she trips and falls and face plants just fully. Like. So hard. Like a statue. Gets up and starts dancing.
[34:32] Kevin McHale: Oh, she bounces right back. Blood, scabs, wounds, always bruised. But fine. But fine. Like, just laughing, smiling about it. That was Dianna to me. Like that. I have so many, but that I don't know. She also just knows everybody. Everybody. She was like at the Samuel L. Jackson tribute thing last week. I was like, what is your relationship with Samuel L. [1:01:49] Kevin McHale: As Vanessa Lynge said when we came back from vacation one time, asked by immigration if she was traveling alone or with friends, she looked in line behind her and said, I'm traveling with my family.
[1:02:01] Jenna Ushkowitz: Oh my God.
[1:02:03] Kevin McHale: A new kind of family. I cannot. The ABC family tagline, and we're like, girl, you're going to get us arrested, but that is how we all feel about each other.
[1:02:12] Jenna Ushkowitz: I cannot.
[1:02:13] Kevin McHale: But it's so beautiful.
[1:02:15] Jenna Ushkowitz: That's really funny.
[1:02:19] Kevin McHale: Even this sounds cliche, but it just leaves me with a feeling of deep, profound appreciation. I cannot explain what Glee has given me in my life, in lessons, in emotion, in people. It has formed who I am, and it has given me opportunity in the most unbelievable ways in somebody's life. We've ticked things off our boxes that people dream about for the one thing in their life to accomplish, and I'm just floored by it, that that's something that that gave me. I think that's my word.
[1:03:15] Jenna Ushkowitz: I love that so much, and it's a dream of mine. My high school self is going insane right now, even talking to you guys as many times over as we have at this point. Thank you so much for being as generous as you've been. I do feel like this entire community of fans speaking for them, if they'll allow me to, but it's just the best people I've met, and they are so gracious to you both for being as vulnerable as you've been, like I've said. So thank you so much for your time, and I really, really appreciate it.
[1:03:56] Kevin McHale: Thanks for having us.
[1:03:57] Jenna Ushkowitz: It's always a joy.
[1:03:58] Kevin McHale: Always a joy.
[1:03:59] Jenna Ushkowitz: You're going to get sick of us.
[1:04:00] Kevin McHale: We'll come back again.
[1:04:01] Jenna Ushkowitz: Yeah. Don't be afraid to ask.
[1:04:03] Kevin McHale: We're going to get some nasty competitions.
[1:04:04] Jenna Ushkowitz: I love these blackheads, yes.
[1:04:05] Kevin McHale: Great. We'll be back.
[1:04:06] Jenna Ushkowitz: We'll be back.
[1:04:07] Kevin McHale: All right.
[1:04:09] Jenna Ushkowitz: Nasty.
[1:04:10] Kevin McHale: Perfect.
[1:04:11] Jenna Ushkowitz: Thank you so much.
[1:04:13] Kevin McHale: See you guys later.
[1:04:14] Jenna Ushkowitz: Bye.
[1:04:15] Kevin McHale: Bye.
[1:04:16] Jenna Ushkowitz: Bye.
[1:04:17] Kevin McHale: It's Gleek.
[1:04:18] Jenna Ushkowitz: Gleek of the Week.
[1:04:19] Kevin McHale: Those were good ones today.
