Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Pulitzer Prize–winning meditation on art, creation, and legacy, inspired by Georges Seurat's painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. The first act follows the nineteenth-century painter as he obsessively builds his masterwork, often at the expense of the people around him; the second act leaps to 1984, where his fictional descendant wrestles with his own creative identity. Hauntingly beautiful and intellectually rich, it is widely regarded as one of Sondheim's greatest achievements.
